fix(sdk,cli): skills/load's default answer sends formattedContent again, as 1.11.0 did; format: 'markdown' is the opt-in for the smaller one - #1142
#1085 (the fix for #1066) changed what skills/load sends by default: formattedContent came only with the new format: 'markdown', and LoadedSkillItem.instructions and formattedContent became optional. That broke 1.11.0 code in a patch release:
at runtime, the default load's formattedContent read as undefined;
in types, strict code that used instructions or formattedContent as string stopped compiling;
no breaking-change entry recorded it.
This PR keeps 1.11.0's answer for 1.11.x and keeps 'markdown' as an opt-in:
format
1.11.0
1.11.1-rc.1
This PR
'full' (default)
fields, tool schemas, formattedContent
fields and tool schemas
as 1.11.0
'instructions-only'
fields and formattedContent (still with the schemas)
fields only
fields and formattedContent, no schemas in either (#1075's fix)
So the only answer without duplication in 1.11.x is 'markdown'. Sending the structured fields once, with no formattedContent, waits for 1.12, as the issue suggests.
Types:
DirectClient.loadSkills() is generic on the format. The default and 'instructions-only' return LoadedSkillItem, with instructions: string and formattedContent: string, as in 1.11.0.
{ format: 'markdown' } returns the new LoadedSkillMarkdownItem. It has formattedContent: string and no instructions or parameters.
A format known only at runtime (LoadSkillsFormat) returns either one.
LoadSkillsOptions with no type argument takes 'full' | 'instructions-only', as in 1.11.0. So 1.11.0's const result: LoadSkillsResult = await client.loadSkills(ids, options) compiles again.
SkillsLoadResultSchema requires formattedContent again, since every format sends it.
Our own callers:
The generated CLI's <bin> skills load (on a server without the Skilled OpenAPI plugin) prints the whole result, so the restored default would print each skill twice. It now asks for format: 'markdown', and the daemon client passes the options on.
<bin> skills read prints only instructions and the tool names in text mode, so it keeps the default.
The Skilled OpenAPI plugin and install don't call skills/load.
User-facing change
What changed:
skills/load and DirectClient.loadSkills() send formattedContent by default again, with instructions, parameters and the tool schemas, as 1.11.0 did.
format: 'markdown' is the opt-in for the smaller answer: formattedContent alone.
'instructions-only' sends formattedContent again, without tool schemas.
The default's instructions and formattedContent are typed string again.
The generated CLI's skills load prints each skill once, in formattedContent.
loadSkills(['triage'], { format: 'markdown' }): 1.11.0 refused it; 1.11.1-rc.1 and now, formattedContent without instructions.
loadSkills(['triage'], { format: 'instructions-only' }): 1.11.0 formattedContent with the tool schemas; 1.11.1-rc.1 none; now without the schemas.
const s: string = skill.formattedContent on the default load: compiles in 1.11.0, fails in 1.11.1-rc.1, compiles now.
<bin> skills load <id>: 1.11.0 printed the instructions and schemas twice; 1.11.1-rc.1 printed the fields; now it prints formattedContent without the fields.
frontmcp.dev pages affected (if known):
reference/sdk/skill and learn/teaching-the-model-skills: their examples read formattedContent from the default load. They work unchanged on 1.11.1.
The skills/load / loadSkills() reference can list format: 'markdown' (new in 1.11.1) as the way to get each part once.
The generated CLI page: skills load prints the markdown rendering.
Skills catalog entries updated:
frontmcp-development/references/create-skill-with-tools.md: the table of what each format sends, the 'markdown' opt-in, the types, and the 1.11.1-rc.1 note;
frontmcp-deployment/references/build-for-cli.md: what skills load and skills read print;
libs/sdk/src/direct/README.md (not in the catalog): the format comment, the result structure and the new type exports.
Tests
Added or changed:
load-skill.format.spec.ts, through a real connect() client (the issue's repro):
the default load has instructions, the tool's inputSchema and formattedContent (with the schema);
format: 'markdown' has formattedContent with the instructions and schema, and no instructions or parameters;
'instructions-only' has instructions and formattedContent, and no schema in either;
'markdown' sends the instructions once in the whole response.
Type tests in the same spec, checked by sdk:typecheck:
the default load's instructions and formattedContent assign to string;
nx run-many -t typecheck -p sdk,cli,plugin-skilled-openapi,demo-e2e-skills, and tsc --noEmit on the SDK's and the CLI's tsconfig.lib.json;
demo-e2e-bundle-size: 12 suites, 63 tests. The sizes are unchanged (1,296,320 / 1,303,551 / 768,591 bytes), so the budgets stay.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Skill-loading results now include formatted content across all supported formats. Full and instructions-only results include structured skill details; full results also include tool schemas.
Markdown results contain formatted content without separate instructions or parameters. Instructions-only results include formatted instructions without tool schemas.
SDK types now reflect the selected format and the fields available in each result.
Documentation
Updated skill-loading guides to describe format contents and compatibility across versions.
…1.0 did; format 'markdown' is the opt-in for the smaller answer (#1125)
1.11.1-rc.1 left formattedContent out of the default and 'instructions-only'
loads and made instructions and formattedContent optional in the types, which
broke 1.11.0 code in a patch release. Both formats send formattedContent again
(without tool schemas for 'instructions-only'), and their results type both as
string. 'markdown' stays the opt-in that sends formattedContent alone, and the
generated CLI's skills load asks for it, so it prints each skill once.
Skill loading now returns formattedContent in every format. The SDK types distinguish Markdown results from full and instructions-only results. Tests and documentation describe the format-specific fields.

SDK types and the MCP result schema require formattedContent and describe fields by format. DirectClient.loadSkills is generic over the requested format. The direct module exports the format and Markdown item types.
The load flow includes formatted content in every result. Full format includes tool schemas, instructions-only output excludes schemas from formatted content, and Markdown omits structured instructions and parameters. Tests check output content and types.

Explanation
The title names the two changes the PR makes: restoring formattedContent in the default skills/load response as in 1.11.0, and keeping format 'markdown' as the opt-in. It also names the affected packages (sdk, cli). The title is long (140 characters), but it matches the changeset's main intent.

Explanation
The description follows the template's sections: 'What and why', 'User-facing change' (with the what-changed, before/after, frontmcp.dev pages, and skills catalog entries fields), and 'Tests'. It gives a clear account of the regression, the per-format behavior table, the type changes, the CLI call-site changes, and the validation runs. The description is thorough and the required information is present.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #1125 offers two options. The PR uses the second: keep formattedContent in the default skills/load format for 1.11.x and defer the change to 1.12. The PR summary shows the code for this option:
load-skill.flow.ts: every skill result includes formattedContent. The default format includes instructions, parameters, and tool schemas.
client.types.ts: the default and 'instructions-only' items require instructions: string and formattedContent: string. LoadSkillsOptions with no type argument accepts 'full' | 'instructions-only', so 1.11.0 code that assigns LoadSkillsResult still compiles.
LoadedSkillMarkdownItem is returned only for format: 'markdown'. It has no instructions or parameters.
direct-client.ts: loadSkills is generic on the format and keeps the validation path.
Tests cover the default load, 'markdown', 'instructions-only', the type-level assignments (including @ts-expect-error cases), and the 1.11.0 call shape.
The issue's documentation examples are on frontmcp.dev, outside this repository. The issue assigns those updates to its maintainers, so they are not coding requirements here. The breaking-change entry is required only for the first option, which the PR does not take. The excluded CLI files are not requirements of #1125, so this assessment does not depend on them.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
Most changes connect to #1125. They are the SDK types, flow, schema, direct client, tests, e2e specs, and skill catalog and README docs that describe the restored default and the 'markdown' opt-in.
The following changes cannot be assessed from the available evidence:
libs/cli/src/commands/build/exec/cli-runtime/daemon-client.ts, libs/cli/src/commands/build/exec/cli-runtime/generate-cli-entry.ts, and their two spec files (daemon-client.spec.ts, generate-cli-entry.spec.ts) are listed in ignored_files. They match the exclusion rule !**/build/** with no inclusion rule. Their contents were not inspected. The PR description links them to the restored default, because skills load would otherwise print each skill twice. That link is plausible but unverified.
libs/skills/catalog/frontmcp-deployment/references/build-for-cli.md adds a statement that, up to version 1.11.0, skills read and skills load returned exit code 0 for a missing skill. This statement does not clearly relate to #1125. The PR is stacked on #1141, and the diff against the merge base may include #1141 changes. The available evidence does not show whether the exit-code behavior is changed in this diff or only documented.
No change in the reviewable evidence is shown to be unrelated to #1125.
Resolution
Confirm that the excluded CLI files change only the skills load request format and the daemon client's pass-through of load options. Also confirm whether the diff against merge base 91fa0066b46da15a4593406174030246be0d2a44 includes #1141 commits. If it does, confirm that the exit-code paragraph in build-for-cli.md belongs to those commits and is in scope for this PR, or remove it from this PR. Provide the excluded files' diffs or an inclusion rule for **/build/** so this assessment can be completed.
