fix(adapters, plugins, edge): an older saas bundle, pulled or pushed, doesn't roll the server back - #1119
The Skilled OpenAPI plugin takes signed bundles from a saas source: pulled at startup, on each poll or on a Worker's Cron run, and pushed to POST /__skilled_openapi/push with enableWebhook. It checked a bundle's push token, schema and signature, but never its version. So a validly signed older bundle was applied, kept as the last good bundle, and rolled the server back. Two ways to get there:
a captured bundle pushed again later, under a fresh push token (the token isn't bound to the body);
an old version served again by a misbehaving or compromised bundle server.
Now a bundle from the saas source, pulled or pushed, is applied only when it isn't older than the bundle being served.
The ordering rule. A bundle's version is any string of 1 to 256 characters: the schema doesn't require semver, compileSkilledBundleFromOpenApi() takes it as given, and real bundles use 1.0.0, 7 or 2026.05.01-1. Every bundle has a generatedAt, which the schema requires to be a parsable date and the signature covers. So:
Two semver versions compare by semver precedence, whatever their generatedAt.
The same version, or versions that aren't both semver, compare by generatedAt.
An equal version and generatedAt is the same bundle: it applies as before, since every poll pulls the served bundle again.
Refusing to order non-semver versions, and accepting only an exact match, would block every update of a bundle versioned 1, 2, ... So the rule falls back to generatedAt instead.
The same version with other content. A hotfix re-signed under the same version is plausible, so it applies when its generatedAt is later. An earlier build of that version, as a replay would be, is refused.
Where it runs.
The source declares the policy: SkillBundleSource.forwardOnly, true on SaasPullSource unless allowRollback. This matches how a source already declares push and keepBundle.
BundleSyncService.apply() enforces it, as a third gate after the pin and signature gates. It runs inside the apply queue, so it compares with the bundle actually served, and pulls and pushes can't race it.
It runs after the signature check, so a tampered bundle reports its signature failure, and the version it compares is a signed one.
409 for a push. The bundle itself is valid. It conflicts with the server's current state, the served version, so it answers 409 bundle_outdated, next to 409 push_replayed. 422 bundle_not_applied stays for a bundle whose own content fails its checks. The separate error code tells the bundle server to send a newer version, not to fix the bundle.
A deliberate rollback.
allowRollback: true on the saas source, validated by its Zod schema, applies an older bundle. It sits on the source, next to enableWebhook and pollIntervalMs, because only that source orders versions.
It is .optional(), not .default(false), so the exported SaasSourceOptions type stays compatible for code that builds a SaasPullSource by hand.
The docs also name the other way: publish the earlier content under a newer version.
What stays.
static, npm and inline sources apply any bundle, as before. Their bundles come from the deployer's own files or code, so a watched file edited back to an older version is a deliberate edit.
The pin gate is unchanged: a pinned store refuses every bundle.
The cache: a start has no served bundle, so it serves what it pulls, or the cached bundle when the pull fails. A refused bundle is never kept, so the cache keeps the newer one.
Scenarios covered: B2 (the saas pull per poll, and the cache), B3 (a bundle that isn't applied leaves the served one), B6 and J2 (pushed bundles on a managed Cloudflare Worker).
User-facing change
What changed:
A pulled or pushed saas bundle older than the served one is not applied and not kept. The log says [bundle-sync] bundle <id>@<version> not applied: older than the served bundle <id>@<version> (generatedAt <date>).
A push of such a bundle answers 409 { "error": "bundle_outdated" }.
New option allowRollback on the saas source, and managed.allowRollback on @frontmcp/edge.
New export compareBundleVersions() from @frontmcp/adapters/skills.
New optional forwardOnly on SkillBundleSource, and refusal?: 'outdated' on BundleApplyResult.
Before → after: a validly signed acme:billing@1.4.0, pulled or pushed while 1.5.0 is served, was applied and replaced the cached bundle. Now it is refused, 1.5.0 keeps serving and stays cached, and a push answers 409. With allowRollback: true it applies, as before.
With the gate turned off, 3 of the 5 new integration tests fail, so they test the fix.

New Features
Managed bundle updates now move forward by default. Older bundles are not applied or cached, and push attempts to publish one return a 409 bundle_outdated response while keeping the currently served bundle active.
Enable allowRollback to permit older bundles. Bundle ordering uses semantic versions when both versions are valid and differ; otherwise, it uses the bundle generation time.
Documentation
Updated deployment and configuration guides with bundle ordering, rollback options, and outdated-push response details.
…rved is not applied
The Skilled OpenAPI plugin checked a pulled or pushed bundle's signature, schema and push
token, but never its version. A validly signed older bundle, replayed after its push window
or served again by the SaaS, was applied, kept as the last good bundle, and rolled the
server back.
A bundle from the saas source is now applied only when it isn't older than the served one.
Two semver versions compare by semver; the same version (a re-signed hotfix), or versions
that aren't both semver, compare by generatedAt, which the signature covers. A refused
pull is logged and the served bundle stays cached; a refused push answers 409
bundle_outdated. allowRollback on the saas source, or managed.allowRollback on the edge,
applies an older bundle on purpose. Static, inline and npm sources are unchanged.
Managed SaaS sources now compare incoming bundles with the served bundle and reject older bundles by default. Version ordering uses semver when both versions are semver and otherwise uses generatedAt. The allowRollback option permits older bundles. Outdated pushes return HTTP 409.

The adapter compares versions by semver precedence when both versions are semver and otherwise by generatedAt. SaaS sources expose forwardOnly, and managed edge options forward allowRollback. Documentation describes these options and ordering rules.
BundleSyncService refuses older bundles from forward-only sources after signature verification. The push flow returns HTTP 409 with bundle_outdated for this refusal.
Integration and end-to-end tests check older-bundle rejection, served and cached bundle preservation, and rollback behavior when allowRollback is enabled.

Built-in SaaS sources retain the intended rollback protection, but a custom forward-only source could apply a bundle with an invalid timestamp. This bounded risk can be fixed or explicitly accepted before merging.

…t order against the served one
compareBundleVersions returns NaN when the order falls to a generatedAt that isn't a date. The gate tested < 0, so such a bundle from a custom source was applied. It now applies only a bundle the comparison proves not older.
