fix(sdk, auth, plugins): this.authProviders works: the SDK wires the AuthProviders vault from a new authProvidersVault option - #1131
this.authProviders couldn't work. A tool that declares authProviders: ['github'] and calls this.authProviders.get('github'), as the skills catalog shows (create-tool examples 13 and 15), failed in three places:
It didn't compile. The this.authProviders type was a module augmentation in a file nothing imported, so an app's type-check answered TS2339: Property 'authProviders' does not exist.
At runtime it was undefined. Nothing installed the property, so the call threw TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'get'). A real createDirect() server and the e2e server both showed it.
There was nothing to configure.createAuthProvidersProviders() builds the registry, vault, credential cache, LazyCredentialLoader and accessor, but the SDK never called it, and no option took the providers. It came in with the auth library split (feat: Refactor authentication module structure and add new utilities #206), unwired since. auth.providers is the local-mode OAuth federation (this.orchestration), not these.
What this PR does:
A server option registers the providers.@FrontMcp({ authProvidersVault: { providers } }) takes the existing AuthProvidersVaultOptions (validated by authProvidersVaultOptionsSchema): each provider's name, scope, loading, factory and optional refresh / toHeaders. Each scope registers the providers when the option enables them (enabled, or a non-empty providers). The module loads on demand, as the HTTP helper does, so a server without the option doesn't load it. The base vault is an InMemoryAuthorizationVault per scope.
this.authProviders is always defined. It's a getter on ExecutionContextBase (tools, resources, prompts, agents), so its type reaches every app. It resolves the accessor for the request. On a server without the option, it gives an accessor whose get() / headers() / refresh() throw AuthProvidersNotConfiguredError naming the provider, not a DI "not registered" error. has() answers false and listProviders()[]. The unused augmentation file is removed.
The factory learns who the caller is. The factory context read authInfo.extra.sub / email / name, which no entry point sets. So userSub was always undefined, and a user-scoped provider could never resolve. It now reads the verified user claims (authInfo.user), and an anonymous subject stays undefined.
LazyCredentialLoader keys in-flight loads by caller. It deduplicated by provider name alone. The key is now the provider, the factory context's sessionId and its userSub. So if the loader ever outlives one caller, a concurrent load is never handed to another caller. isLoading(name, context) takes the context too.
A vaultRef listed twice is refused.SkilledOpenApiPlugin.init({ credentials, authProviders }) with one vaultRef in both silently used the caller's credential and ignored the server's. Startup now throws VaultRefListedTwiceError, naming each such vaultRef. Both places the plugin parses its options check it. The exported options schema stays a plain schema, so its safeParse() keeps its contract.
Left as they were:
A name the configured vault doesn't register answers null (headers(): {}). @Tool({ authProviders }) and the Skilled OpenAPI plugin rely on this to read the session credential vault's key of that name instead. A required one still gets -32001 naming it.
The gate is still a no-op on a server with neither vault.
User-facing change
What changed:
New option @FrontMcp({ authProvidersVault: { providers: [{ name, scope, loading, factory, refresh? }] } }). It's also accepted by create() / createDirect() and in CLI mode.
this.authProviders exists, in types and at runtime, on every execution context.
On a server without authProvidersVault, reading a credential throws AuthProvidersNotConfiguredError (code AUTH_PROVIDERS_NOT_CONFIGURED), naming the provider.
The factory gets the caller's userSub, userEmail and userName.
SkilledOpenApiPlugin refuses a vaultRef in both credentials and authProviders with VaultRefListedTwiceError, exported from @frontmcp/plugin-skilled-openapi.
LazyCredentialLoader.isLoading() (exported from @frontmcp/auth) takes the factory context as a second argument.
Before → after:
this.authProviders.get('github'): TS2339 at compile time and TypeError at runtime → the credential the registered factory returns. On a server without the option, it's an error naming github.
@FrontMcp({ authProvidersVault }): no such option (silently dropped) → registers the providers. A provider name listed twice, or a provider field it doesn't take, fails at startup.
credentials: { 'billing-token': … } plus authProviders: { 'billing-token': 'billing' }: starts, and never sends the server's token → refused at startup.
frontmcp.dev pages affected (if known): the server configuration reference (new authProvidersVault), the tool context / this.authProviders page, the auth / credential vault pages, and the Skilled OpenAPI plugin's credentials section.
Skills catalog entries updated:
create-tool: examples 13 (the authProvidersVault config that registers github) and 15 (a pasted-in secret is the session credential vault, this.credentials, filled by local mode's authenticate(); the invented auth.providers: [{ kind: 'vault', fields }] config is gone), references/auth-providers.md, and the SKILL.md example table.
frontmcp-config: references/configure-auth.md (the credential vault section no longer calls it unwired scaffolding), examples/configure-auth/remote-oauth-with-vault.md, and the SKILL.md settings table.
frontmcp-development/references/openapi-adapter.md, and skills-manifest.json (regenerated).
The plugin's README.md documents VaultRefListedTwiceError.
Tests
Added:
libs/sdk/src/auth/vault/__tests__/auth-providers.wiring.spec.ts, on real createDirect() servers (6 tests):
a tool with authProviders: ['github'] gets the credential through get() and headers(), and the factory is told the signed-in caller;
an unregistered name answers null;
without the option, and with enabled: false, the error names the provider;
a duplicate provider name, and a provider field it doesn't take, fail at startup.
libs/auth/src/vault/__tests__/lazy-loader.spec.ts (4 tests): one caller's concurrent loads share a factory call. Another session's or another user's load never gets that caller's credential (these two fail with the old key). isLoading is per caller.
libs/auth/src/errors/__tests__/auth-errors.spec.ts: the message names the provider.
plugins/plugin-skilled-openapi/src/__tests__/plugin.spec.ts (3 tests): dynamicProviders() and the constructor refuse a doubly listed vaultRef, with a message that names it.
apps/e2e/demo-e2e-providers/e2e/auth-providers-vault.e2e.spec.ts (2 tests), with a new src/auth-providers-vault.main.ts and a read-github-credential tool: over HTTP, the tool gets github-e2e-token and Bearer github-e2e-token. On the server without the option, it gets an error naming github.
caller-credentials.integration.spec.ts no longer lists billing-token in credentials: that configuration is now refused.
nx test plugin-skilled-openapi: 51 suites, 787 tests passed.
nx test skills: 3 suites, 249 tests passed.
nx test demo-e2e-providers: 4 suites, 32 tests passed.
nx test demo-e2e-skilled-openapi: 10 suites, 90 tests passed.
Bundle-size e2e: 12 suites, 63 tests passed.
nx run-many -t typecheck -p auth,sdk,plugin-skilled-openapi,demo-e2e-providers, and tsc --noEmit on the tsconfig.lib.json of auth, sdk and plugin-skilled-openapi: no errors.
Checked by hand: before the change, a tool calling this.authProviders.get('github') on a createDirect() server got TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'get'), and the same call in an app failed its type-check with TS2339.
Bundle budgets, re-measured after the merges (create() + one tool, create() + WebMcpPlugin + one tool, the Vite initial chunk):
create() + one tool: 1,290,642 → 1,293,132 bytes (+2,490).
Vite initial chunk: 764,318 → 767,720 bytes (+3,402).
The growth is the vault options schema in the server metadata schema, the this.authProviders getter, and the accessor it falls back to. The vault itself stays out: a new auth providers vault entry in the bundle test's on-demand feature list checks that create() without the option doesn't reach it.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Configure server-level authentication providers for tools to retrieve caller-specific credentials and authorization headers.
Credential loading is scoped to the caller and session, with concurrent requests sharing appropriate in-progress loads.
Bug Fixes
Startup now reports an error when a credential reference is configured in both the session vault and authentication providers.
Errors for missing authentication providers identify the requested provider and explain how to configure it.
Documentation
Updated guidance clarifies how server-level providers differ from per-session credentials.
…cp({ authProvidersVault }) registers
The auth providers vault behind this.authProviders was never wired: nothing called
createAuthProvidersProviders, nothing installed the property, and its type augmentation
never reached an app, so a tool with authProviders: ['github'] that called
this.authProviders.get('github') failed to compile, and at runtime got a TypeError.
- @FrontMcp({ authProvidersVault: { providers } }) registers credential providers (name,
scope, loading, factory, refresh) in each scope, loaded on demand.
- this.authProviders is defined on every execution context. On a server without the
option, get() and headers() throw AuthProvidersNotConfiguredError naming the provider.
- The factory context carries the caller's verified sub, email and name; it read keys
that were never set.
- LazyCredentialLoader keys in-flight loads by provider, session and user, so a load is
never shared with another caller.
- SkilledOpenApiPlugin refuses a vaultRef listed under both credentials and authProviders
(VaultRefListedTwiceError), which silently ignored the server's credential.
The SDK adds server-level auth provider vault configuration and registration, caller-scoped lazy credential loading, and an execution-context accessor with defined behavior when the vault is absent. The OpenAPI plugin rejects vault references listed under both credentials and authProviders. E2E coverage and documentation are updated.
Server and CLI configuration accept authProvidersVault, and scope initialization registers configured providers. The E2E example exercises configured and unconfigured provider access. The documentation describes provider configuration and lookup. Bundle budgets and feature matching are updated.
Resolve credentials for each caller libs/auth/src/vault/credential-loaders/lazy-loader.ts, libs/sdk/src/auth/vault/*, libs/sdk/src/common/interfaces/execution-context.interface.ts, libs/auth/src/errors/*, libs/skills/catalog/create-tool/*, libs/skills/catalog/frontmcp-config/references/configure-auth.md
Lazy credential loads are keyed by provider, session, and user. The execution context provides an unconfigured accessor fallback, and provider errors can identify the requested name. Tests cover caller-specific loading and accessor behavior. Examples distinguish server providers from session credentials.
The plugin checks for references listed under both credentials and authProviders, and raises VaultRefListedTwiceError when it finds an overlap. Tests and documentation cover the validation. The caller-credential fixture no longer configures a shared billing credential.
Credentials registered through authProvidersVault are not stored in the vault, so they cannot be reused across requests or sessions through it. Each acquisition may call the provider factory again. A smaller gap: the exported options schema passes a duplicate vaultRef configuration that the plugin rejects at startup. Resolve the vault store before merging, or explicitly accept the behavior.
