fix(sdk,auth): /oauth/connect connects a verified caller who has no vault yet, and asks an anonymous one to sign in - #1132
A signed-in caller who has no credential vault yet can now connect a credential. /oauth/connect answered 409 Your session is no longer active. Please sign in again. whenever the link's subject had no vault:
On a server whose sign-in returns no credentials, no caller ever had a vault: only a sign-in that returns some creates one. Every connect failed, and signing in again didn't help.
After a restart dropped an in-memory vault, a caller who was still signed in could never connect again.
So tools kept answering -32001 with a connect URL that could never work.
Why it refused, and why creating the vault there is safe:
A sign-in rotates the vault by pointing the subject at a new vault id, and nothing ever removes that pointer. So a rotated vault always has a successor, the refusal never fired for one, and a connect always wrote into the current vault. It fired only for a subject that never had a vault, or whose in-memory vault a restart dropped.
The link is an HMAC over { sub, key, context, exp } with the server's secret. requireConnect() mints it only for the request's verified subject, and it lasts 10 minutes. Its holder could already add a credential to that subject's existing vault. Creating the vault when there's none stores the same credential for the same subject, so it grants nothing more. The link still can't name another subject, live longer, or skip authenticate().
What changes:
/oauth/connect creates the vault when the link's subject has none. It uses a new SessionCredentialVault.ensureVault(sub), which sets the subject's vault pointer only if none exists. So a concurrent connect or sign-in for the same subject is never replaced, and two connects at once land in one vault. The vault is created only after authenticate() returned at least one well-formed credential.
A link signed for an anonymous caller is refused, with what to do.requireConnect() signs sub: '' for an anonymous caller. Such a link (or an anon:… one) now answers 403login_required on GET and POST: "Connecting a credential needs a signed-in account. Sign in to this server, then run the tool again to get a new connect link." Before, GET showed a form whose submit could only fail. authenticate() isn't called, and no vault is created.
Every existing check stays. The link's signature and expiry are still checked, so a link whose subject was changed is still 400 invalid_token. authenticate() still checks the submitted value, and malformed credentials are still refused. This flow has no OAuth state or PKCE: those belong to the sign-in, which is unchanged.
A sign-in that returns no credentials now rotates the subject's existing vault, as one that returns credentials always did. Without this, a credential connected mid-session would outlive the sign-in, against the documented "a new sign-in starts with an empty vault". A subject without a vault still gets none. An incremental authorization keeps its vault: it's the same session.
User-facing change
What changed:
/oauth/connect for a signed-in caller with no vault yet stores the credential, creating the vault, instead of answering 409.
A connect link signed for an anonymous caller answers 403 (login_required) with a sign-in message, on GET and POST.
A local sign-in whose authenticate() returns no credentials empties the subject's existing session vault.
New method SessionCredentialVault.ensureVault(sub) in @frontmcp/auth.
Before → after:
Connect after a sign-in that stored no credential: 409 → 200; the credential is stored and the gated tool runs.
Connect after a restart dropped the in-memory vault: 409 → 200.
Anonymous connect link: GET showed the form, POST answered 409 → 403login_required on both.
A credential connected mid-session, then a new sign-in that returns no credentials: not reachable before → the new sign-in starts with an empty vault.
frontmcp.dev pages affected (if known): the local-mode auth page's session credential vault section (this.credentials, requireConnect(), the connect page), and the tool authProviders credential-gate page (what opening the connect URL does).
Skills catalog entries updated:
frontmcp-config/references/configure-auth.md: requireConnect() (the vault created at connect, what the link is bound to, the anonymous 403), and the security paragraph (a sign-in that returns no credentials still rotates).
create-tool/references/auth-providers.md: "When auth is missing", step 3.
Tests
Added:
libs/sdk/src/auth/flows/__tests__/oauth.connect.flow.spec.ts (17 tests; 11 new, and the old 409 test replaced):
a signed subject with no vault: POST creates that subject's vault and stores the credential; GET still renders the page;
another subject's vault keeps its id and credentials;
two connects at once write into one vault, and each credential stays readable;
no vault is created when every returned credential is malformed, or when authenticate() rejects the value;
an anonymous link ('' and anon:…): 403login_required on GET and POST, no form, authenticate() not called, no vault;
a link whose signed subject was changed (to another user, or from anonymous to a user): 400, no vault, no credential;
an existing vault keeps its id and the credentials already in it.
oauth.callback.flow.spec.ts (3 tests), through the code-mint stage: a sign-in that returns no credentials empties a vault a connect created; it creates none for a subject without one; a sign-in that returns credentials still starts a fresh vault holding only them.
oauth.callback.incremental.flow.spec.ts (1 test): an incremental authorization keeps the session vault.
libs/auth/src/session/__tests__/session-credential-vault.spec.ts (4 tests): ensureVault creates a vault when absent, returns an existing one unchanged, gives concurrent callers the same vault, and creates one for the named subject only.
apps/e2e/demo-e2e-local-auth/e2e/local-auth-connect-without-vault.e2e.spec.ts (4 tests), over HTTP against the credentials server:
a caller whose sign-in stored no credential opens the connect URL from the gated tool's -32001, connects, and the tool runs;
a new sign-in starts with an empty vault again;
after a restart drops the in-memory vault, the same access token's caller connects again;
a link signed for an anonymous caller answers 403 with the sign-in message.
The e2e server's authenticate() signs in a sk-test-no-credential-… key without storing a credential. The spec signs in with a new shared helper, e2e/sign-in.ts.
Checked by hand: against the old flows, the 4 e2e tests fail (409 three times, and the anonymous link renders the form with 200), and 7 of the unit tests fail.
Run:
nx test sdk: 694 suites, 9,681 tests passed.
nx test auth: 103 suites, 2,896 tests passed.
nx test skills: 3 suites, 249 tests passed.
nx test demo-e2e-local-auth: 12 suites, 78 tests passed.
Bundle-size e2e: 12 suites, 63 tests passed. The sizes didn't move: create() + one tool 1,293,132 bytes, create() + WebMcpPlugin + one tool 1,300,364 bytes, and the Vite initial chunk 767,720 bytes, each equal to its budget.
nx run-many -t typecheck -p sdk,auth, nx run demo-e2e-local-auth:typecheck, and tsc --noEmit on the tsconfig.lib.json of sdk and auth: no errors. The new e2e files also type-check clean.

New Features
Signed-in users can connect credentials even when they don’t yet have a credential vault; a vault is created after successful authentication.
Behavior Changes
Anonymous users opening a credential connect link are asked to sign in instead of connecting anonymously.
A new, non-incremental sign-in starts with a fresh credential vault, replacing previously stored credentials. Incremental authorization preserves the existing vault and its credentials.
…nnect a credential
/oauth/connect answered 409 whenever the link's subject had no vault: on a
server whose sign-in returns no credentials, and after a restart dropped an
in-memory vault. The refusal (from #479) meant to keep a stale link from
reviving a rotated-away session, but a sign-in rotates the vault by repointing
it and nothing removes it, so it only ever refused callers with no vault.
The link is HMAC-signed for the caller's verified subject, so the connect now
creates that subject's vault through SessionCredentialVault.ensureVault (set if
absent, so a concurrent connect or sign-in is never replaced). A link signed for
an anonymous caller answers 403 login_required and asks the caller to sign in.
A sign-in that returns no credentials rotates the subject's existing vault, so
a new sign-in still starts with an empty vault.
The OAuth connect flow can create a credential vault for a signed-in subject without one and rejects anonymous subjects. Non-incremental sign-ins with no credentials rotate an existing vault. New unit and end-to-end tests cover vault lifecycle and connection behavior.
ensureVault returns an existing vault ID or conditionally creates one. The callback flow rotates an existing vault when a non-incremental sign-in returns no credentials. Tests cover vault replacement, empty sign-ins, and incremental sign-ins. The resume and vault-rotation documentation is updated.

…efore it mints the code, and fails if it can't
The rotation ran after the authorization code was minted and swallowed a storage failure, so the new session could keep reading the old vault's credentials. It now runs first, and a failed rotation answers server_error with no code.
