fix(sdk, plugins): a bundle swap sends one list_changed per list it changed, not one per entry - #1136
A Skilled OpenAPI bundle swap registers and removes skills, operation tools and the skills' skill:// resources one at a time. Each registry change sent every connected client a list_changed: about 25 for a modest bundle. A poll that pulled the bundle being served registered it all again and sent them again, and a bundle rolled back sent them too.
scope.batchListChanges(change), new in @frontmcp/sdk, holds those announcements:
While change runs, the list_changed its registry changes would send are held. When it ends, also when it throws, each list it changed is announced once. A list it left alone gets nothing.
The batch follows the async call chain. A change made by other code meanwhile, such as another request's, is sent at once, and so is any change outside a batch, as before.
The notification service, the 2026-07-28 subscription streams and the live surface's tool list version all hold their announcements for it.
A change that undoes itself calls batch.listsRestored() on the batch its callback gets. Then nothing it changed up to that point is sent.
A batch run inside another hands what it changed to the outer one, which sends it when it ends. listsRestored() in the inner batch drops only what the inner one changed.
Internal tools don't announce. Registering or removing a visibility: 'internal' tool through registerToolInstance() / unregisterToolInstance() sends no tools/list_changed: tools/list never shows internal tools. The live surface's tool list version doesn't move for them either. The Skilled OpenAPI operation tools are internal, so a bundle swap no longer sends tools/list_changed for a list that didn't change.
The plugin applies each bundle in one batch:
A new bundle sends one notifications/skills/list_changed, and one notifications/resources/list_changed when it adds or removes skills (their skill:// resources).
The bundle being served, pulled again (same content), leaves the registries alone and sends nothing. So does a refused bundle.
A bundle that fails part-way is rolled back. When the rollback puts back every skill it replaced or removed, it sends nothing. When it can't put one back, it sends one for each list it left changed.
A rollback restores the operation tools only when the apply had replaced them.
The first bundle that loads sends notifications/skills/list_changed even with no skills, since the skill surfaces stop answering that no bundle is loaded.
Scenarios covered: a pulled bundle, a pushed bundle, the served bundle pulled again, a refused bundle, a rollback before any registry change, a rollback after skills were registered and one replaced, a rollback that can't restore a skill, a bundle with no skills replacing one with skills, and a first bundle that's rolled back or that has no skills.
Known limits:
A skill replaced in place (same id, new description) changes its skill:// resource's metadata without a resources/list_changed, as before.
The served bundle pulled again is skipped by content digest. If an earlier rollback couldn't restore a skill, pulling the same bundle again no longer brings it back; the next new bundle does.
User-facing change
What changed:
A Skilled OpenAPI bundle swap sends at most one list_changed per list it changed, once the swap is done, and none for a list it didn't change.
It sends no notifications/tools/list_changed: the operation tools it replaces are internal.
A rolled-back bundle sends nothing when the rollback restored the served bundle's skills.
New in @frontmcp/sdk: scope.batchListChanges(change) and the ListChangeBatch type (listsRestored()).
Registering or removing an internal tool at runtime sends no tools/list_changed.
Before → after:
A new bundle with a few skills and operations: about 25 notifications (one per skill, operation tool and resource) → one skills/list_changed and one resources/list_changed.
A poll that pulls the bundle being served: the same burst again → nothing.
A bundle that fails and is rolled back after registering skills: one per entry registered and restored → nothing.
scope.tools.registerToolInstance() of a visibility: 'internal' tool: tools/list_changed to every session → none.
frontmcp.dev pages affected (if known):/reference/plugins/skilled-openapi (bundle swaps and the notifications they send), /reference/sdk/scope (batchListChanges), /reference/sdk/notifications (when list_changed is sent), and the plugin authoring guide.
Skills catalog entries updated:
frontmcp-development/references/create-plugin-hooks.md (announcing many registry changes once, listsRestored(), internal tools)
a change outside a batch is sent at once; a batch sends each list it changed once, when it ends, and none it left alone; a batch that changes nothing sends nothing;
a nested batch: what both changed is sent once, when the outer one ends; listsRestored() in the inner one drops only its own changes; an inner batch that outlives the outer one sends its own;
a throw sends what changed before it, once, and rejects; listsRestored() then a throw sends nothing; a change after listsRestored() is sent;
a change by other code while a batch runs, or after it ended, is sent at once; a change that leaves the lists unchanged sends nothing; each scope's lists are held apart;
on a server with a connected client: runtime tools added and removed in one batch send one tools/list_changed; a batch rolled back with listsRestored() sends nothing; an internal tool registered and removed sends nothing.
Plugin, bundle-sync.service.spec.ts (3 tests): the bundle served applied again leaves the registries alone, one generated later is registered; a rollback that restored every skill calls listsRestored(); one that couldn't restore a skill doesn't.
Plugin, list-changed-per-swap.integration.spec.ts (10 tests), a real server with a client connected: a pulled and a pushed bundle send one skills/list_changed and one resources/list_changed; the served bundle pulled again, a refused bundle, and a bundle rolled back before or after it registered skills send nothing; a rollback that can't restore a skill sends one of each; a bundle with no skills replacing one with skills sends one of each; on a server whose first pull failed, a rolled-back first bundle sends nothing and a first bundle with no skills sends one skills/list_changed.
demo-e2e-skilled-openapi, saas-source.e2e.spec.ts: a version applied by a poll, and a pushed version, send exactly one skills/list_changed and one resources/list_changed, and no tools/list_changed, over the polls after it.

New Features
Registry changes can now be grouped so clients receive a single notification for each changed list when the batch completes. Nested batches and restored changes are handled, and changes outside a batch continue to notify as usual.
Applying a changed skill bundle now sends notifications only for lists that actually changed. Reapplying an unchanged bundle or restoring the previous state sends none.
Documentation
Updated guidance to describe batch notifications and skill-bundle notification behavior.
…anged, not one per entry
Applying a Skilled OpenAPI bundle registers and removes skills, operation tools and the skills'
skill:// resources one by one, and each registry change sent every connected client a
list_changed: about 25 for a modest bundle, and again on every poll that pulled the bundle
being served.
The scope gets batchListChanges(change): while the change runs, the list_changed its registry
changes would send are held, and once it ends (also when it throws) each list it changed is
announced once. A batch inside another joins it. The batch follows the async call chain, so a
change made by other code meanwhile is sent at once, and a change outside a batch is sent as
before. The notification service, the 2026-07-28 subscription streams and the live surface's
tool list version all hold their announcements for it.
The plugin applies each bundle in one batch. A pull of the bundle being served (the same
content) leaves the registries alone and sends nothing, a rollback restores the operation tools
only when it replaced them, and the first bundle that loads sends skills/list_changed even
with no skills, since the skill surfaces stop answering that no bundle is loaded.
…wap sends no tools/list_changed for internal tools
A bundle that failed part-way and was rolled back to the served one still sent a skills and
resources list_changed, though the lists were back as they were. The batch callback now gets a
ListChangeBatch: listsRestored() drops what the batch changed so far, and a nested batch hands its
changes to the outer one, so restoring an inner batch drops only its own. The plugin calls it when
the rollback restored every skill; a rollback that can't restore one still announces the lists it
left changed.
Every swap also sent tools/list_changed for the operation tools, which are internal and never in
tools/list. Registering or removing an internal tool through registerToolInstance() /
unregisterToolInstance() now leaves the lists unchanged: no tools/list_changed, and the live
surface's tool list version stays.
The bundle-size budgets are set to the measured sizes, which include the batch added before.
…#1135
The batch of list changes and the internal-tool check add 864 bytes to create() + one tool, 865 with WebMcpPlugin, and 516 to the Vite initial chunk. The scope's batchListChanges doc says a nested batch hands its changes to the outer one.
The SDK adds list-change batching and per-list notification checks. The Skilled OpenAPI plugin batches bundle application, skips re-registration for matching bundle digests, and tracks whether rollback restores registry lists. Tests and documentation cover these behaviors. Browser bundle-size limits also increase.
The SDK adds scoped list-change batches, a skill-list notification method, and per-list notification checks. Notifications are sent at batch completion for changed lists. Tests cover nested and asynchronous batches, restoration, scope isolation, internal tools, and connected-client notification counts.
Apply bundles within list-change batches plugins/plugin-skilled-openapi/src/sync/bundle-sync.service.ts, plugins/plugin-skilled-openapi/src/skilled-openapi.plugin.ts, plugins/plugin-skilled-openapi/src/__tests__/*, plugins/plugin-skilled-openapi/README.md, apps/e2e/demo-e2e-skilled-openapi/e2e/saas-source.e2e.spec.ts
The plugin passes scope batching to bundle synchronization. Matching bundle digests skip skill and operation-tool registration. Rollback reports restored lists only when restoration succeeds. Unit and integration tests cover pulls, pushes, refusals, rollbacks, and initial loads; documentation describes the notification behavior.
