fix(sdk): connect() with an authToken connects an anonymous caller again on a server without auth - #1129
The fix: authInfoForToken() returns {} when the scope's auth is DirectPublicAuth. The caller stays anonymous, and the token still reaches the tools as authInfo.token, as on a public server. Every other scope runs session:verify as before.
Why this check, and not the others:
The auth mode can't tell the two apart.DirectPublicAuth keeps the parsed public options, so scope.auth.options.mode is 'public' on both a no-auth server and a { mode: 'public' } one. Only the second one has session:verify.
"Is the flow registered?" would fail open. If a server with auth ever lacked the flow (a new auth class, or a registration bug), its tokens would connect as anonymous callers without being verified. A transparent server that requires a token would accept a connection it should refuse. The DirectPublicAuth check skips only the one case known to verify nothing. Any other missing flow still throws.
Catching FlowNotRegisteredError would hide real errors, for the same reason.
This keeps the flow architecture. session:verify still runs wherever it's registered. A server without auth has no token verification to bypass: it serves every caller anonymously, whatever they send.
How a public server handles the same token, for comparison:
An opaque token: handlePublicMode serves the caller anonymously, and authInfoForToken() returns {}. This is the same result as the fix.
A JWT: a public server checks it as a gateway token it might have minted, and refuses it if it didn't. A server without auth mints no tokens and has no key. So it passes any token through, as 1.11.0 did. A test pins this down.
Entry points checked:
connect(), connectOpenAI(), connectClaude(), connectLangChain() and connectVercelAI() all go through connect() and then DirectClientImpl.create().
createDirect(...).connect({ authToken }) and create(...).connect({ authToken }) go through DirectMcpServer.connect() and then DirectClientImpl.create().
authInfoForToken() has no other caller.
The in-memory server takes the authInfo that create() builds, and doesn't verify anything itself.
The other session:verify callers aren't affected. These are http:request, custom http.routes with auth: true, and the skills HTTP auth. They run only in scopes that serve HTTP, which always have a session-flow auth.
connect(config, { mode: 'cli' }) builds a full scope (not direct-only), so a generated CLI on a server without auth was never affected.
User-facing change
What changed:connect() (and the connectOpenAI / connectClaude / connectLangChain / connectVercelAI helpers), create() and createDirect() accept an authToken again on a server without auth. The caller is anonymous, and tools read the token as authInfo.token.
1.11.1-rc.1: fails with FlowNotRegisteredError: Flow "session:verify" is not registered.
This PR: connects. whoami returns { sub: '', anonymous: true, token: 'tok_123' }. This also holds for a JWT, which a server without auth has no key to verify.
A server with auth behaves as in 1.11.1-rc.1: the token is verified per its mode.
frontmcp.dev pages affected (if known):reference/sdk/connect ("a token alone signs no one in") and reference/sdk/auth. Their examples failed on 1.11.1-rc.1 and pass again. They may also say that a server without auth verifies no token.
Skills catalog entries updated:frontmcp-deployment/references/build-for-sdk.md. The authToken paragraph now says that a connect(), create() or createDirect() server without auth verifies no token: the caller is anonymous, and the tools receive the token. The ConnectOptions.authToken / LLMConnectOptions.authToken JSDoc and the direct README say the same.
Tests
Added:
libs/sdk/src/direct/__tests__/connect.auth-token.spec.ts: 3 new tests, each on a real server with no mocked runFlow.
An opaque token on a server without auth, next to the public one: the tool sees the token and no user.
A JWT on a server without auth: the tool sees the token, and an authorities: 'admin' tool still denies the anonymous caller.
FrontMcpInstance.createDirect(config).connect({ authToken }) on a server without auth.
All 3 fail on the base branch with FlowNotRegisteredError; the suite is 10/10 with the fix.
apps/e2e/demo-e2e-direct/e2e/direct-auth-token.e2e.spec.ts: the issue's repro, 8 tests.
whoami with tok_123 on a server without auth gives { sub: '', anonymous: true, token: 'tok_123' } through connect(), each of the four LLM helpers, and createDirect().connect().
The public server (same caller) and the no-token case (token: null) are controls.
On the base branch, the 6 no-auth-with-token cases fail and the 2 controls pass. All 8 pass with the fix.
Run (after merging #1128, then yarn install --immutable and npx nx run-many -t build -p sdk, testing):
npx nx test sdk: 693/693 suites, 9659/9659 tests.
npx nx test demo-e2e-direct: 9/9 suites, 99/99 tests.
npx nx test skills: 249/249 tests.
Bundle-size e2e (demo-e2e-bundle-size): 12/12 suites, 63/63 tests. The sizes don't move: create() + one tool is 1,290,587 bytes, with WebMcpPlugin 1,297,780, and Vite's initial chunk is 764,318. These are the current budgets, so the budgets are unchanged.
npx nx run sdk:typecheck, and npx tsc --noEmit -p libs/sdk/tsconfig.lib.json: pass.
npx prettier --check and npx eslint on the changed files: clean.

Bug Fixes
Connections to servers without configured authentication now treat callers as anonymous and pass supplied tokens to tools without verifying them. Servers with configured authentication continue to verify tokens as before.
Documentation
Clarified how token handling differs between servers with and without authentication.
…ain on a server without auth
On a config with no auth, connect({ authToken }) failed with
FlowNotRegisteredError: Flow "session:verify" is not registered, a
1.11.1-rc.1 regression. connect() verifies its token through session:verify
since #1093, but a direct-only scope without auth gets DirectPublicAuth,
which registers no session flows.
authInfoForToken() now returns no caller when the scope's auth is
DirectPublicAuth: the caller is anonymous and the tools receive the token as
authInfo.token, as in 1.11.0 and as on a public server. The auth mode can't
tell the two apart (both are public), and checking whether the flow is
registered would let a server with auth connect an unverified token if its
flow were ever missing, so the check names the one auth that verifies none.
Every other scope runs session:verify as before.
The fix covers connect(), the four LLM connect helpers, create() and
createDirect(). The unit tests run real servers without auth, and an e2e in
demo-e2e-direct runs the issue's repro through every entry point. The
authToken JSDoc, the direct README and the build-for-sdk catalog entry say
that a server without auth verifies no token.
Fixes#1124
When a server has no configured auth, the SDK skips token verification and passes the supplied token to tools while keeping the caller anonymous. SDK and end-to-end tests cover this behavior, and the documentation describes it.
Changes: No-auth token handling

Summary
SDK token handling and coverage libs/sdk/src/direct/client.types.ts, libs/sdk/src/direct/token-auth-info.ts, libs/sdk/src/direct/__tests__/connect.auth-token.spec.ts, libs/sdk/src/direct/README.md, libs/skills/catalog/frontmcp-deployment/references/build-for-sdk.md
authInfoForToken returns empty authorization info for DirectPublicAuth without running session:verify. SDK tests cover opaque tokens, signed JWTs, and direct-server connections. SDK and deployment documentation describe token handling when auth is not configured.
End-to-end tests check token propagation for connect(), public servers, four platform connectors, and direct-server connections. They also check the anonymous caller when no token is supplied.
Developers may incorrectly assume a supplied session user is ignored on no-auth connections. The change is mergeable with this documentation correction.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Linked issue #1124 has one coding objective group: a server without auth must accept authToken, keep the caller anonymous, and pass the token to tools, as in 1.11.0. At the reviewed head, authInfoForToken() in libs/sdk/src/direct/token-auth-info.ts returns {} when scope.auth instanceof DirectPublicAuth, before it calls scope.runFlow('session:verify', ...). A no-auth direct scope gets DirectPublicAuth, so the flow is skipped and no FlowNotRegisteredError occurs. The token still reaches tools through the authInfo that create() builds. Every other scope runs session:verify as before. The issue's expected test coverage is present in libs/sdk/src/direct/__tests__/connect.auth-token.spec.ts at head. It includes a no-auth opaque-token case beside the public-server case, a no-auth JWT case, and a FrontMcpInstance.createDirect(config).connect({ authToken }) case. None of these mocks runFlow. The issue offered 'DirectPublicAuth or missing flow' as alternatives. The PR implements only the DirectPublicAuth check and gives a stated reason: a missing-flow check could fail open on another auth scope. That choice satisfies the issue's behavior requirement. The e2e suite (apps/e2e/demo-e2e-direct/e2e/direct-auth-token.e2e.spec.ts) and the test run counts in the PR description were not re-executed in this review. The verdict rests on the source inspected and on the test file contents at head. The frontmcp.dev page updates named in the issue are external and not coding requirements.

The changed files are: libs/sdk/src/direct/token-auth-info.ts (the DirectPublicAuth early return and its JSDoc), libs/sdk/src/direct/client.types.ts and libs/sdk/src/direct/README.md (JSDoc and documentation of the same no-auth token behavior), libs/skills/catalog/frontmcp-deployment/references/build-for-sdk.md (documentation of the same behavior), libs/sdk/src/direct/__tests__/connect.auth-token.spec.ts (regression tests for #1124), and apps/e2e/demo-e2e-direct/e2e/direct-auth-token.e2e.spec.ts (end-to-end repro for #1124, with public-server and no-token controls). Each change either implements the fix, tests it, or documents the changed behavior. The documentation edits describe the new behavior and do not add unrelated features. No unrelated code change was found. The bundle-size and budget claims in the PR description do not bear on linked-issue scope and were not verified here.

Fixes #1124.
Stacks on #1128.
What and why
On a server config with no
auth,connect()with anauthTokenfailed before it connected:1.11.0 connected an anonymous caller, and the tools saw the token as
authInfo.token. This is a 1.11.1-rc.1 regression, from #1093.Why it happened:
connect({ authToken })verify the token the way the HTTP transport verifies a Bearer token.DirectClientImpl.create()passes everyauthTokentoauthInfoForToken(), which runs thesession:verifyflow.connect(),create(),createDirect()) withoutauthgetsDirectPublicAuth(perf(sdk): direct-only scopes build no HTTP transport or OAuth, and auth loads on demand (#827, part 3 of 3) #860). It registers no OAuth, discovery or session flows, sosession:verifyisn't there to run.authmode registers the flow, so only a config withoutauthbroke. fix(sdk, cli): a generated CLI goes through its daemon, a logged-in caller's token is verified, and skills read/load exit 1 for a missing skill #1093's tests triedtransparentand{ mode: 'public' }, and the other specs mockrunFlow. The fix:
authInfoForToken()returns{}when the scope's auth isDirectPublicAuth. The caller stays anonymous, and the token still reaches the tools asauthInfo.token, as on a public server. Every other scope runssession:verifyas before. Why this check, and not the others:
DirectPublicAuthkeeps the parsed public options, soscope.auth.options.modeis'public'on both a no-authserver and a{ mode: 'public' }one. Only the second one hassession:verify.authever lacked the flow (a new auth class, or a registration bug), its tokens would connect as anonymous callers without being verified. A transparent server that requires a token would accept a connection it should refuse. TheDirectPublicAuthcheck skips only the one case known to verify nothing. Any other missing flow still throws.FlowNotRegisteredErrorwould hide real errors, for the same reason.session:verifyonDirectPublicAuthdoesn't fit. That auth has no signing key, so a JWT couldn't be verified and would be refused. 1.11.0 passed it through. It would also undo perf(sdk): direct-only scopes build no HTTP transport or OAuth, and auth loads on demand (#827, part 3 of 3) #860's smaller direct-only scopes. This keeps the flow architecture.
session:verifystill runs wherever it's registered. A server withoutauthhas no token verification to bypass: it serves every caller anonymously, whatever they send. How a public server handles the same token, for comparison:
handlePublicModeserves the caller anonymously, andauthInfoForToken()returns{}. This is the same result as the fix.authmints no tokens and has no key. So it passes any token through, as 1.11.0 did. A test pins this down.Entry points checked:

These arehttp:request, customhttp.routeswithauth: true, and the skills HTTP auth.
