fix(sdk): type hook ctx parameters against their flow and add typed flow accessors - #983
Proposal item 1.1: a hook author cannot rely on the types of the ctx a hook receives. A plugin declared @ToolHook.Will('execute') guard(ctx: { toolName: string }) and compared ctx.toolName; the flow has no toolName
(the name is at ctx.state.input.name / ctx.state.tool.metadata.name), yet it compiled, read undefined and the
guard silently never matched. The hook decorators typed only the stage name and opts.filter, and returned a plain MethodDecorator, so any parameter type compiled (ctx: number included). And what a hook needs most often (the
request's session and client, a list_changed notification) was reachable only through protected members, a DI token
(ctx.get(FRONTMCP_CONTEXT)) or ctx.get(ScopeEntry).notifications.
This PR:
Types every hook decorator against its flow's ctx. The decorated method must be assignable to (ctx: FlowCtxOf<Name>) => unknown (Stage, Will, Did, Finally) or (ctx: FlowCtxOf<Name>, next: () => Promise<void>) => unknown (Around). FlowCtxOf<Name>, a structural subset of
it, unknown, any or no parameter still compiles, so existing plugins are unaffected; a property the flow does not
have, a wrongly typed one, another flow's ctx, or a second parameter on a hook that gets only the ctx fails with TS1241. It applies to FlowHooksOf() and every export built on it (ToolHook, ListToolsHook, HttpHook, ResourceHook, ListResourcesHook, ListResourceTemplatesHook, PromptHook, ListPromptsHook, CompletionHook, AgentCallHook, JobHook, ChannelSendHook, ChannelListHook, the OAuth*Hooks), on plugins, providers and
entry classes (instance and static hooks on @Tool classes).
Adds read-only accessors on the flow, with no new behaviour:
tools:call-tool: toolName (the tool's name, its id else its name, once findTool resolved it, else the
name the call asks for) and toolInput (the arguments the call passes to the tool, as Will hooks left them,
before its input schema parses them);
every flow: request ({ sessionId, clientInfo, metadata, protocol }, read from the request context; each field undefined when the run has none, and it never throws), notify.listChanged('tools' | 'resources' | 'prompts')
(the scope's notification broadcast) and error (the run's first failure, state.flowError from fix(sdk): run Finally hooks on every stage outcome and close spans for refused answers #980, typed Error | undefined on every flow).
Exports the new types: FlowRequestInfo, FlowNotifier, ListChangedKind, FlowHookMethod, AroundFlowHookMethod, FlowHookDecorator.
request.sessionId is the session the server verified (FrontMcpContext.verifiedSessionId), not the raw mcp-session-id header, so a hook cannot key state on a session id the server did not accept. request.clientInfo
is the client info the request carries (MCP 2026-07-28) or, failing that, the one its session's initialize reported,
as ToolContext.clientInfo reads it. request.protocol is the session payload's transport, which an anonymous session
(auth.mode: 'public') does not record, so it is undefined there.
Stacked on #981 (output schemas), itself on #980 (Finally hooks and state.flowError). http.forwardHeaders
(proposal 1.10) is not in this PR.
This tightens the hook decorator types on the 1.10.x line. A hook whose parameter is typed with a property its
flow does not have, a wrong type, or another flow's ctx now fails to compile: that is the fix, since such a hook read undefined at runtime. One case worth knowing: a structural parameter whose properties are all optional and none of
them exist on the flow (ctx: { state: { statusCode?: unknown } }, statusCode being undeclared in the call-tool
state) is now rejected by TypeScript's weak-type check; type it FlowCtxOf<'<flow>'>. Every plugin, adapter and app in
this repository compiled unchanged except one spec, which read the undeclared state.statusCode that way. Three more
cases fail to compile although they read real values at runtime:
a structural parameter naming a member the flow keeps protected (ctx: { input: ... }, ctx: { scope: ScopeEntry }):
read ctx.toolInput, ctx.request or ctx.get(ScopeEntry) instead;
a parameter typed by a type parameter narrower than the ctx (ctx: C with C extends FlowCtxOf<'<flow>'>);
a hook decorator stored in or returned as a MethodDecorator (TS2322): a hook decorator is now a FlowHookDecorator, so a helper that returns one leaves its return type inferred.
A custom flow class (extends FlowBase) that declares a property or method named request, notify or error now
fails to compile (TS2610 / TS2426: the base class defines them as accessors). At runtime such a flow keeps
working: each accessor has a setter that turns an assignment (this.error = ..., or a field initializer compiled
with useDefineForClassFields: false) into the flow's own property, so a package built against 1.10.15 does not
break on upgrade.
User-facing change
What changed: hook decorators check the decorated method's parameter against the flow's ctx; flows gain toolName, toolInput, uri, promptName, request, notify.listChanged() and error.
Before → after:
@ToolHook.Will('execute') guard(ctx: { toolName: string }): compiled and read undefined → compiles and reads the
tool's name.
@ToolHook.Will('execute') guard(ctx: { notAField: string }), ctx: { toolName: number }, ctx: number, @ResourceHook.Will('execute') read(ctx: FlowCtxOf<'tools:call-tool'>), or @ToolHook.Will(...) m(ctx, next):
compiled → TS1241: Unable to resolve signature of method decorator when called as an expression, whose last line
names the problem (Property 'notAField' is missing in type 'CallToolFlow' ..., Type 'string' is not assignable to type 'number', Target signature provides too few arguments).
The tool name in a hook: ctx.state.input?.name / ctx.state.tool?.name → also ctx.toolName; the
arguments: ctx.state.input?.arguments → also ctx.toolInput; the read URI → ctx.uri; the prompt name → ctx.promptName.
The request's session, client, headers: ctx.get(FRONTMCP_CONTEXT) (throws outside a request) and ctx.get(ScopeEntry).notifications.getClientInfo(sessionId) → ctx.request.sessionId, .clientInfo, .metadata, .protocol.
list_changed from a hook: ctx.get(ScopeEntry).notifications.broadcastNotification('notifications/tools/list_changed')
→ ctx.notify.listChanged('tools').
The failure in a Finally hook: ctx.state.flowError (typed on four flows) → also ctx.error (every flow).
frontmcp.dev pages affected (if known): the plugin hooks guide (what a hook receives, typed hook parameters,
reading the request, list_changed from a hook, troubleshooting TS1241), the decorators reference (hook decorators),
the FlowBase / flow types reference (FlowRequestInfo, FlowNotifier, ListChangedKind, FlowHookDecorator).
Skills catalog entries updated:

parameter and the new members in "What a Hook Receives" (with the entry-flow table and ctx.request fields), a new
"Reading the Request and Announcing a List Change" example, ctx.toolName / ctx.toolInput in the timing,
logging, caching and @Stage examples and in filter, a common-pattern row, a checklist item and a
troubleshooting row for TS1241.

in the example, ctx.error for @Finally).

Tests
Type tests:

new hooks-must-fail.ts, 14 @ts-expect-error cases: ctx: { toolName: number }, ctx: { notAField: string }, ctx: number, a second parameter on Finally, an Aroundnext that must resolve to a string, another flow's
ctx on Stage, and a property the flow lacks on ResourceHook, PromptHook, ListToolsHook, ListResourcesHook, HttpHook, AgentCallHook, JobHook and a FlowHooksOf('skills:filter') const. A second
compile with the directives removed asserts that each case fails with TS1241 on its decorator and nothing else
(a wrong stage name or a missing export no longer passes as an expected error).
libs/sdk/src/hooks/__tests__/flow-hooks.exports.spec.ts: compiles fixtures/typed-hook-ctx.fixture.ts against the SDK source under strict (every exported hook helper rejects a
parameter its ctx does not satisfy; every decorator rejects a wrongly typed one; the ctx, a subset and no parameter

with the directives removed to assert each expected failure is a TS1241 on its decorator.
Unit (libs/sdk/src/flows/__tests__/flow-accessors.spec.ts, on a direct server and on a bare flow): toolName before parseInput (the requested notes:say_hello), between parseInput and findTool, and after
(say_hello); for a tool with an id, toolName is that id before and after findTool; toolInput before parseInput and at execute; uri and promptName before and after parseInput / findPrompt; request.metadata of an in-process call; request.sessionId and the session's clientInfo over connect(); notify.listChanged('tools') reaching a connected client; error undefined after a
successful stage and the tool's PublicMcpError after a failed one; request with no request context (and with a
context storage that throws) has undefined fields and does not throw; request reads the session's client info,
metadata and protocol from the context, and prefers the request's own client info; notify.listChanged() for each
kind; error is state.flowError.
libs/sdk/src/flows/__tests__/flow-status-code.spec.ts: its hook read the undeclared state.statusCode through a
structural type that the typed decorator now rejects; it reads it with Reflect.get.
E2E demo-e2e-hooks/e2e/hook-ctx-accessors.e2e.spec.ts: a request-probe plugin's Will('execute') hook, filtered

no probe.
Red first: on the parent, the dts-consumer fixtures failed (12 TS2339 for the missing accessors, the missing FlowRequestInfo export, and every must-fail case an unused @ts-expect-error), as did the source fixture (22 unused

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Hook contexts now provide typed access to request details, including session and client information, errors, and flow-specific data such as tool names and inputs, resource URIs, and prompt names.
Hooks can notify connected clients when tool, resource, or prompt lists change.
Hook decorators now check handler parameter types, helping catch incompatible context fields and method signatures.
Documentation
Updated hook guides and examples to describe the context properties, typing behavior, and notification support.
…sors for hooks
Hook decorators now check the decorated method's parameter against FlowCtxOf of their flow, so a hook
that reads a property the flow does not have fails to compile instead of reading undefined. Flows gain
read-only accessors for hooks: toolName and toolInput (tools:call-tool), uri (resources:read-resource),
promptName (prompts:get-prompt), and request, notify.listChanged() and error on every flow.
…hook fails with TS1241
ctx.toolName read metadata.name once findTool resolved the tool, so for a tool
declaring an id it changed mid-run from the called id to the display name; it
now reads the entry's name (id, else name). The must-fail type tests recompile
their fixtures without the @ts-expect-error directives and require one TS1241
per case, so a wrong stage name or a missing export no longer passes. The
catalog notes protected members, the MethodDecorator type and what toolInput
holds.

Remove the public setters from the flow accessors.
FlowBase declares setters for request, notify, and error. A hook receives the flow instance as ctx, so it can assign these members. shadowWithOwnValue then installs a writable own property. Later hooks can observe a replaced request, notification handler, or error instead of the runner-owned value.

On the outside-diff finding on flow.interface.ts:164-187 (removing the setters of request, notify and error): no change. The setters are deliberate and documented in the description ("User-facing change"). A custom flow class built against 1.10.15 may assign one of these names (this.error = ..., or a field initializer compiled with useDefineForClassFields: false). With getter-only accessors that assignment throws in strict mode, so such a package would break on upgrade. With the setter, it keeps its own value and runs as before. New code that declares these names already fails to compile (TS2610 / TS2426).
A hook that assigns ctx.error only shadows the accessor on that flow instance. It's trusted application code that can already rewrite ctx.state (including flowError itself). The runner doesn't read the accessor: it records failures in state.flowError and builds request and notification data from its own context.
