fix(sdk): check Origin on loopback, bind unix sockets owner-only and dispose scopes on stdio shutdown - #984
Stacked on #983 (base fix/02-typed-hook-context, the top of #980 → #981 → #983).
What and why
Proposal item 1.7 (local transport safety), plus a stdio shutdown bug found while verifying item 3.1.
1.7: a local server trusted every local caller. The default bind was already loopback, but three gaps remained.
Adapter fallback bind.ExpressHostAdapter.start() called without an address still listened on 0.0.0.0. It now
falls back to 127.0.0.1, the same default resolveBindAddress() uses.
No Origin check on loopback. The derived (default) DNS-rebinding protection checked only Host. A page on another
site can POST to http://127.0.0.1:<port> without any rebinding: the Host is then a loopback name, so the request
passed, and only its Origin gave it away. Now, on a loopback bind with derived protection, the server also derives
the allowed Origins:
http:// and https:// on localhost, 127.0.0.1 and [::1] with the bound port;
the issuer's origin (a local proxy that presents a public name);
the origins http.cors.origin names, so a browser app you opted into with CORS keeps working.
A request with noOrigin (CLI and agent clients) is still served. A request from another origin gets the same 403 {"error":"Forbidden","message":"Invalid Origin header"} the explicit allowedOrigins path gives. cors.origin: true (or '*', or an origin function) admits every origin, so nothing is checked then. An explicit dnsRebindingProtection.allowedOrigins still replaces the derived list. A routable bind derives no origins, as
before. An explicit allowedHosts (or FRONTMCP_ALLOWED_HOSTS) replaces the derived protection as a whole, Origin
included, as it always replaced the derived Host list: set allowedOrigins next to it to keep checking Origin.
The server card, which answers any origin with Access-Control-Allow-Origin: *, is refused to a page on another
origin on a loopback server too (the check runs ahead of routing). The production security audit now says Host and Origin headers are checked for a loopback bind.
Parity: the web-fetch (worker) handler applies no derived Host list (only an explicit one), so it gets no derived
Origin list either; the two adapters still apply the same rules from host-validation.ts.
Unix socket permissions.chmod 0o660 ran inside the listen callback, so the group could always connect, the
mode followed the umask between bind and chmod, and a chmod failure was swallowed. cleanupStaleSocket unlinked
whatever was at the path: a live server's socket, a regular file, another user's socket. Nothing checked the
directory, and pm created ~/.frontmcp/sockets with the default mode. Now, on POSIX (Windows named pipes are
skipped):
the socket is bound with an owner-only umask (0o077, restored right after listen), then set to 0600 and
verified; if that fails, the listener is closed and startup fails with SocketPermissionError. The umask is
process-wide, so it clears only the group and other bits: a directory another thread creates in that instant stays
usable by its owner;
a socket directory, or any directory above it up to / (along the path as given and along its realpath), that another user (other than root) owns, or that the
group or others can write to without the sticky bit (as /tmp has), fails startup with UnsafeSocketDirectoryError, naming that directory and its mode: such a directory lets its owner, or the group,
rename the socket's directory and put another socket at the path. The sticky bit does not bind a directory's owner,
who can still remove or rename the socket, so a sticky directory another user owns is refused too;
before listening, the path is probed: nothing there → go on; not a socket → SocketPathConflictError; another
uid's socket → SocketPathConflictError; a live socket (a connect succeeds) → SocketInUseError, and the running
server keeps serving; a refused connection (a crashed server's socket) → unlinked and replaced; any other probe
error → SocketPathConflictError. Nothing but a stale socket is ever removed;
frontmcp socket, frontmcp start --socket (on the default path) and the daemon start of a --target cli build create ~/.frontmcp/sockets
as 0700, tighten an existing one, and take group and other write away from ~/.frontmcp. They refuse a symlinked ~/.frontmcp/sockets instead of changing the mode of the directory it points to. Without this, a user umask of 002 (the default on some Linux distributions)
would create a group-writable directory that the server now refuses. The generated daemon start also used to
unlink the socket before checking whether a daemon was running, cutting a running daemon off; it now does so only
once no daemon runs.
bootstrap() and runUnixSocket() shut down what they built when the start fails (a refused socket, a port in
use), within the 10 s shutdown deadline, then rethrow, instead of leaving scopes running.
Where the umask cannot protect the bind (a worker thread cannot set it; a cluster worker's socket is bound by the
primary), the socket's directory must be owner-only (0700), or startup fails with SocketPermissionError before
anything is bound. The socket is then set to 0600 and verified as usual.
@frontmcp/utils gains lstat() and chmod(), so the socket checks go through it.
Bug: runStdio shutdown never disposed the scope. The SIGINT/SIGTERM handler called scope.shutdown() on the
primary scope only and mcpServer.close(), then exited, so scope.onDispose() callbacks never ran under stdio, and a
standalone app's scope was not even shut down. It now runs the same graceful shutdown as the HTTP and socket servers
(FrontMcpInstance.shutdown(): every scope shut down, then disposed, each onDispose callback awaited), then closes
the MCP server, through exitOnShutdownSignals with the existing 5 s stdio deadline: a callback that hangs cannot
keep the process alive past it (exit 1). A failed startup's rollback now runs the same shutdown, bounded by the same
5 s deadline, so a hanging callback cannot hold back the start error. The HTTP path
(FrontMcpInstance.shutdown) and runUnixSocket already disposed.
User-facing change
What changed: loopback servers check Origin by default; Unix sockets are created 0600; startup refuses unsafe
socket directories and live, foreign or non-socket paths; stdio runs onDispose on shutdown; the adapter's fallback
bind is loopback.
Before → after:
Origin is enforced on loopback by default. A request whose Origin is not the server's own (any loopback
spelling with the bound port), its issuer, or in cors.origin → 403 Invalid Origin header (was: served). No Origin → still served. A browser app on another origin needs cors.origin: ['<its origin>'] (which it already
needed to read responses) or dnsRebindingProtection.allowedOrigins. This includes the server card (was: served to
any origin). With an explicit allowedHosts or FRONTMCP_ALLOWED_HOSTS, Origin is checked only against an
explicit allowedOrigins.
The socket is 0600: the group can no longer connect (was 0660, and briefly umask-dependent). A chmod
failure now fails startup (SocketPermissionError, code SOCKET_PERMISSION) instead of being ignored.
Startup refuses unsafe directories and live or foreign sockets:UnsafeSocketDirectoryError
(UNSAFE_SOCKET_DIRECTORY: the socket's directory or one above it is owned by another user, or is group- or
other-writable without the sticky bit), SocketInUseError (SOCKET_IN_USE), SocketPathConflictError
(SOCKET_PATH_CONFLICT); all exported from @frontmcp/sdk. Was: the path was unlinked, whatever it was.
stdio now runs onDispose on SIGTERM/SIGINT, and shuts down every scope. A shutdown step that fails now exits 1 (was 0), as the HTTP and socket servers do.
new ExpressHostAdapter().start(port) listens on 127.0.0.1 (was 0.0.0.0).
~/.frontmcp/sockets is 0700, and ~/.frontmcp loses group and other write.
In a worker thread or a cluster worker, a Unix socket needs an owner-only directory (SocketPermissionError
otherwise).
New @frontmcp/utils exports: lstat, chmod.
frontmcp.dev pages affected (if known): HTTP configuration (DNS rebinding protection, CORS, Unix socket mode),
the production checklist (DNS rebinding, CLI daemon), the CLI daemon / frontmcp socket guide, server lifecycle
hooks (scope.onDispose), stdio transport.
Skills catalog entries updated:

troubleshooting rows;
frontmcp-production-readiness/references/common-checklist.md, references/production-cli-daemon.md, examples/production-cli-daemon/graceful-shutdown-cleanup.md (the example unlinked the socket from a SIGTERM

Summary by CodeRabbit
Security
Loopback servers reject untrusted cross-origin requests while allowing requests without an Origin header and configured origins. The server card remains accessible from any origin.
Unix sockets use owner-only permissions and safer directory checks. Unsafe paths, conflicting files, and sockets already in use are rejected; stale sockets are replaced.
TCP servers without a specified bind address listen on loopback by default.
Reliability
Shutdown waits for disposal callbacks, with deadlines to prevent stalled cleanup from blocking exit. Failed startup performs bounded cleanup.
Documentation
Updated guidance for origin checks, Unix socket security, and shutdown behavior.
…ispose scopes on stdio shutdown
- A loopback bind with derived DNS-rebinding protection also derives its allowed
Origins (its own, the issuer's, the cors.origin list). A request with no Origin
is still served; an explicit allowedOrigins still wins.
- ExpressHostAdapter.start() falls back to 127.0.0.1 instead of 0.0.0.0.
- A Unix socket is bound under an owner-only umask, set to 0600 and verified.
Startup refuses a group- or other-writable directory without the sticky bit,
a live socket, a non-socket and another user's socket; only a stale socket is
replaced. bootstrap() and runUnixSocket() release what they built on a failed
start.
- pm and the generated daemon create ~/.frontmcp/sockets as 0700.
- runStdio shutdown runs FrontMcpInstance.shutdown(), so every scope is shut down
and disposed and onDispose callbacks run, within the 5 s stdio deadline.
- @frontmcp/utils gains lstat() and chmod().
- bootstrap() and runUnixSocket() release a failed start through
releaseFailedStart(), so a hanging dispose cannot hold back the start error.
- The stdio e2e helper treats a child killed by a signal as exited.
- The catalog no longer claims a browser sends Origin on every request.
- Cover the umask fallback, a socket that vanishes before the probe, an lstat
failure, and the release of a refused socket start.
…tdio startup rollback
- A Unix socket directory another user (not root) owns is refused with
UnsafeSocketDirectoryError: the sticky bit does not bind a directory's
owner, who can still remove or rename the socket.
- The owner-only umask around listen is 0o077, so a directory another thread
creates in that instant keeps its owner's execute bit; the socket is still
set to 0600 and verified.
- A stdio start that fails after its scopes are live rolls them back within
the 5 s stdio deadline, so a hanging onDispose cannot hold back the error.
- Pin the Origin edge cases (null, case, IPv6 spellings, default ports), that
an explicit allowedHosts leaves Origin to the operator, and that a loopback
server refuses its server card to a page on another origin.
- Catalog: directory ownership, the explicit-hosts precedence, the server card,
and the daemon examples use ~/.frontmcp/sockets and chmod from
@frontmcp/utils instead of /tmp and fs/promises.
- Restore the SymlinkType doc comment the lstat/chmod insertion displaced.

This PR adds derived Origin validation for loopback binds, Unix socket directory and permission checks, and bounded stdio shutdown and rollback. It also updates CLI socket-directory setup and adds related tests and documentation.
Changes: Loopback Origin Validation
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Derive and apply allowed origins libs/sdk/src/server/security/resolve-allowed-hosts.ts, libs/sdk/src/server/adapters/express.host.adapter.ts, libs/sdk/src/common/types/options/http/interfaces.ts
New helpers derive allowed origins from loopback addresses, the issuer, and CORS settings. The adapter uses the derived set for loopback binds and defaults an omitted bind address to 127.0.0.1.
Test and document Origin behavior libs/sdk/src/server/adapters/__tests__/*, libs/sdk/src/server/security/__tests__/*, apps/e2e/demo-e2e-security/*, apps/e2e/demo-e2e-standalone/e2e/*, libs/skills/catalog/frontmcp-config/references/configure-http.md, libs/skills/catalog/frontmcp-production-readiness/references/common-checklist.md
Tests cover accepted and rejected origins, missing Origin headers, explicit configuration, and server-card requests. Security audit messages and documentation describe when Origin checks apply.
Unix Socket Security
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Add socket guards and filesystem support libs/sdk/src/server/security/unix-socket-guard.ts, libs/sdk/src/errors/*, libs/utils/src/fs/*, libs/sdk/src/common/types/options/http/interfaces.ts
Socket guard functions validate directories and existing paths, and enforce mode 0600. Filesystem utilities add lstat and chmod. New error types report unsafe directories, occupied paths, conflicts, and permission failures.
Integrate socket safeguards into startup libs/sdk/src/server/adapters/express.host.adapter.ts, libs/sdk/src/server/adapters/__tests__/express.host.adapter.unix-socket.spec.ts, apps/e2e/demo-e2e-unix-socket/e2e/unix-socket.e2e.spec.ts, libs/skills/catalog/frontmcp-config/references/configure-http.md
The adapter checks socket directories and paths, replaces stale sockets, and enforces owner-only permissions. Tests cover startup outcomes. Documentation describes socket errors and framework-managed socket cleanup.
Secure the CLI socket directory libs/cli/src/commands/pm/*, libs/cli/src/commands/pm/__tests__/*, libs/skills/catalog/frontmcp-production-readiness/*, libs/skills/catalog/frontmcp-deployment/references/build-for-cli.md
The CLI creates the sockets directory with mode 0700, restricts write permissions on its root directory, and uses the protected directory for the default socket path. Guidance describes the daemon socket location and lifecycle.
Stdio Shutdown
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Bound stdio shutdown and rollback libs/sdk/src/front-mcp/front-mcp.ts, libs/sdk/src/front-mcp/shutdown-signals.ts, libs/sdk/src/front-mcp/__tests__/*, libs/skills/catalog/frontmcp-development/references/create-plugin-hooks.md
Startup failures use bounded cleanup. Stdio signal handling unregisters the session, awaits instance-wide shutdown, and closes the MCP server. Tests cover cleanup, disposal order, and shutdown deadlines.
Exercise disposal through stdio apps/e2e/demo-e2e-stdio-transport/e2e/*, apps/e2e/demo-e2e-stdio-transport/src/stdio-dispose-entrypoint.ts
The E2E entrypoint registers a disposal callback that writes a marker. The process helper supports environment overrides and SIGTERM, and the E2E test checks the exit code and marker.

its `Origin` is allowed or the server does not enforce the derived `Origin`
check; otherwise, a default loopback server may reject it with 403. Preserve the
distinction between CORS response headers and server-side origin enforcement.

…se a symlinked sockets directory
- assertSafeSocketDirectory walks the real path of the socket's directory too,
so a symlink cannot route the socket through a directory another user can
replace.
- ensureSocketsDir and the generated daemon start refuse a symlinked
~/.frontmcp/sockets instead of setting the mode of the directory it points to.
- The utils lstat symlink test runs where creating a symlink needs no elevated
rights.
- Catalog: the root-owned exception and symlinks in the socket rules, and the
loopback Origin check in the default CORS description.
Outside-diff finding on configure-http.md:199-201 (the default CORS description): valid, fixed in a09e8c2. "No CORS Headers (Default)" now says that on a loopback bind, the derived Origin check (linked to "DNS Rebinding Protection") refuses a request from another site with 403. Otherwise a cross-origin request is served and the browser keeps the page from reading the response.

ensurePmDirs no longer chmods ~/.frontmcp/sockets, so read-only pm commands
such as frontmcp status cannot fail on its mode. frontmcp socket and
frontmcp start --socket on the default path still make it owner-only first.

Stacked on #983 (base
fix/02-typed-hook-context, the top of #980 → #981 → #983).What and why
Proposal item 1.7 (local transport safety), plus a stdio shutdown bug found while verifying item 3.1.
1.7: a local server trusted every local caller. The default bind was already loopback, but three gaps remained.
Adapter fallback bind.
ExpressHostAdapter.start()called without an address still listened on0.0.0.0. It nowfalls back to
127.0.0.1, the same defaultresolveBindAddress()uses.No Origin check on loopback. The derived (default) DNS-rebinding protection checked only
Host. A page on anothersite can POST to
http://127.0.0.1:<port>without any rebinding: theHostis then a loopback name, so the requestpassed, and only its
Origingave it away. Now, on a loopback bind with derived protection, the server also derivesthe allowed
Origins:http://andhttps://onlocalhost,127.0.0.1and[::1]with the bound port;http.cors.originnames, so a browser app you opted into with CORS keeps working.A request with no
Origin(CLI and agent clients) is still served. A request from another origin gets the same403 {"error":"Forbidden","message":"Invalid Origin header"}the explicitallowedOriginspath gives.cors.origin: true(or'*', or an origin function) admits every origin, so nothing is checked then. An explicitdnsRebindingProtection.allowedOriginsstill replaces the derived list. A routable bind derives no origins, asbefore. An explicit
allowedHosts(orFRONTMCP_ALLOWED_HOSTS) replaces the derived protection as a whole,Originincluded, as it always replaced the derived Host list: set
allowedOriginsnext to it to keep checkingOrigin. The server card, which answers any origin with
Access-Control-Allow-Origin: *, is refused to a page on anotherorigin on a loopback server too (the check runs ahead of routing). The production security audit now says
Host and Origin headers are checkedfor a loopback bind.Parity: the web-fetch (worker) handler applies no derived Host list (only an explicit one), so it gets no derived
Origin list either; the two adapters still apply the same rules from
host-validation.ts.Unix socket permissions.
chmod 0o660ran inside thelistencallback, so the group could always connect, themode followed the umask between bind and chmod, and a chmod failure was swallowed.
cleanupStaleSocketunlinkedwhatever was at the path: a live server's socket, a regular file, another user's socket. Nothing checked the
directory, and
pmcreated~/.frontmcp/socketswith the default mode. Now, on POSIX (Windows named pipes areskipped):
0o077, restored right afterlisten), then set to0600andverified; if that fails, the listener is closed and startup fails with
SocketPermissionError. The umask isprocess-wide, so it clears only the group and other bits: a directory another thread creates in that instant stays
usable by its owner;
/(along the path as given and along itsrealpath), that another user (other than root) owns, or that thegroup or others can write to without the sticky bit (as
/tmphas), fails startup withUnsafeSocketDirectoryError, naming that directory and its mode: such a directory lets its owner, or the group, rename the socket's directory and put another socket at the path. The sticky bit does not bind a directory's owner,
who can still remove or rename the socket, so a sticky directory another user owns is refused too;
SocketPathConflictError; anotheruid's socket →
SocketPathConflictError; a live socket (a connect succeeds) →SocketInUseError, and the runningserver keeps serving; a refused connection (a crashed server's socket) → unlinked and replaced; any other probe
error →
SocketPathConflictError. Nothing but a stale socket is ever removed;frontmcp socket, frontmcp start --socket(on the default path) and thedaemon startof a--target clibuild create~/.frontmcp/socketsas
0700, tighten an existing one, and take group and other write away from~/.frontmcp. They refuse a symlinked~/.frontmcp/socketsinstead of changing the mode of the directory it points to. Without this, a user umask of002(the default on some Linux distributions)would create a group-writable directory that the server now refuses. The generated
daemon startalso used tounlink the socket before checking whether a daemon was running, cutting a running daemon off; it now does so only
once no daemon runs.
bootstrap()andrunUnixSocket()shut down what they built when the start fails (a refused socket, a port inuse), within the 10 s shutdown deadline, then rethrow, instead of leaving scopes running.

0700), or startup fails withSocketPermissionErrorbeforeanything is bound. The socket is then set to
0600and verified as usual.@frontmcp/utilsgainslstat()andchmod(), so the socket checks go through it.Bug:
runStdioshutdown never disposed the scope. The SIGINT/SIGTERM handler calledscope.shutdown()on theprimary scope only and
mcpServer.close(), then exited, soscope.onDispose()callbacks never ran under stdio, and astandalone app's scope was not even shut down. It now runs the same graceful shutdown as the HTTP and socket servers
(
FrontMcpInstance.shutdown(): every scope shut down, then disposed, eachonDisposecallback awaited), then closesthe MCP server, through
exitOnShutdownSignalswith the existing 5 s stdio deadline: a callback that hangs cannotkeep the process alive past it (exit
1). A failed startup's rollback now runs the same shutdown, bounded by the same5 s deadline, so a hanging callback cannot hold back the start error. The HTTP path
(
FrontMcpInstance.shutdown) andrunUnixSocketalready disposed.User-facing change
Originby default; Unix sockets are created0600; startup refuses unsafesocket directories and live, foreign or non-socket paths; stdio runs
onDisposeon shutdown; the adapter's fallbackbind is loopback.
Originis not the server's own (any loopbackspelling with the bound port), its issuer, or in
cors.origin→403 Invalid Origin header(was: served). NoOrigin→ still served. A browser app on another origin needscors.origin: ['<its origin>'](which it alreadyneeded to read responses) or
dnsRebindingProtection.allowedOrigins. This includes the server card (was: served toany origin). With an explicit
allowedHostsorFRONTMCP_ALLOWED_HOSTS,Originis checked only against anexplicit
allowedOrigins.0600: the group can no longer connect (was0660, and briefly umask-dependent). A chmodfailure now fails startup (
SocketPermissionError, codeSOCKET_PERMISSION) instead of being ignored.UnsafeSocketDirectoryError(
UNSAFE_SOCKET_DIRECTORY: the socket's directory or one above it is owned by another user, or is group- orother-writable without the sticky bit),
