fix(sdk): derive a provider's name from its token and add a CommonJS unit Jest preset - #987
Proposal items 1.4 and 1.9: two sharp edges a consumer hits before writing any server code.
1.4: AsyncProvider in config, and provider name.AsyncProvider and { provide, useValue } providers already
type-check in @FrontMcp, @App, runStdio(), bootstrap(), createDirect() and runUnixSocket() (fixed in 1.10.0, #757), but nothing guarded it. What still broke was the required name: a provider object without one failed to compile
("Property 'name' is missing") and was refused at boot
(providers items must be classes annotated with @Provider() … or { provide, name, useValue | useClass | useFactory } objects),
and a bare @Provider() threw.
name is optional in ProviderMetadata (@frontmcp/di, which the SDK re-exports) and in both provider metadata
schemas (providerMetadataSchema, frontMcpProviderMetadataSchema). An empty name is still refused.
The name comes from the token: the class name for a @Provider() class, and for a provider object the class name, a
symbol's description or the string token. @Provider() can be called with no argument. A @Provider() class that
extends a named one is named after itself: the normalizer reads the class's own name only, since every FrontMCP
decorator stores its name under the same metadata key.
tokenName() (@frontmcp/di) now returns a symbol token's description and a string token itself; it returned [ref]
for both. A symbol with no or an empty description still gives [ref]. The provider name comes from it, and so do the
provider errors and the dependency cycle message (Circular dependency detected: alpha -> beta -> alpha, was [ref] -> [ref] -> [ref]).
No code reads a provider's name for anything but logs and errors, so the derived name changes no lookup.
1.9: jose under CommonJS Jest.jose already loads lazily, and @frontmcp/testing already ships a preset, but
that preset is the frontmcp test e2e configuration (60-second timeout, a setup file, e2e spec patterns). A ts-jest
CommonJS project with no preset still failed once an auth path loaded jose: SyntaxError: Unexpected token 'export'
from node_modules/jose/dist/webapi/index.js.
New @frontmcp/testing/jest-preset-unit, exported for preset: '@frontmcp/testing/jest-preset-unit' and for require(). It compiles TypeScript, TSX and the SDK's ESM-only runtime dependencies (jose, @noble/hashes, @noble/ciphers) with @swc/jest, keeps Jest's default timeout, registers no setup file, and runs every *.spec.ts(x) except .e2e.spec, .perf.spec and .pw.spec files.
A ts-jest project keeps ts-jest by setting a transform for ^.+\.tsx?$ only. Jest puts a config's own transforms
before the preset's, so .ts goes to ts-jest and the preset's transform still compiles the ESM-only .js.
Both presets now spread jest-preset.base.js (transform, transformIgnorePatterns, extensions, ignore paths), so
they can't drift. The e2e preset's settings are unchanged, and the CLI spec that checks it against frontmcp test's
injected config still passes.
Every SDK runtime dependency was checked for ESM-only packages: only jose and @noble/* are, and both lists already
had them.
The README documents both presets.
User-facing change
What changed:
Provider name is optional everywhere: @Provider(), AsyncProvider({ provide, useFactory }), { provide, useValue } and { provide, useClass }, in @FrontMcp, @App, @Plugin, @Agent, dynamicProviders() and the config of runStdio(), bootstrap(), createDirect() and runUnixSocket().
tokenName() from @frontmcp/di names symbol and string tokens, which changes the token names in provider errors
and in the cycle message.
New package export @frontmcp/testing/jest-preset-unit.
Before → after:
{ provide: API_URL, useValue: 'https://…' }: before, a compile error and a boot error; after, accepted, named api-url when API_URL = Symbol('api-url').
@Provider() / @Provider({ scope }): before, a compile error and a ZodError where the class is declared; after,
named from the class.
An error or cycle message about a symbol token: before [ref]; after the symbol's description.
Unit tests in a ts-jest CommonJS project: before, SyntaxError: Unexpected token 'export' from jose unless the
project wrote its own transformIgnorePatterns and a .js transform; after, preset: '@frontmcp/testing/jest-preset-unit' plus transform: { '^.+\\.tsx?$': 'ts-jest' }.
frontmcp.dev pages affected (if known): the providers reference (@Provider options, provider objects, AsyncProvider), the testing reference and "running tests" pages (Jest presets), and the @frontmcp/testing package
page.
Skills catalog entries updated:
frontmcp-testing/SKILL.md (the test-runner row and the Unexpected token 'export' troubleshooting row);
frontmcp-testing/references/setup-testing.md (the unit preset, the ts-jest override, the preset naming note);
frontmcp-development/references/create-provider.md (name optional and how it is derived, AsyncProvider in the
config of every entry point, the checklist);
frontmcp-development/references/create-plugin.md and the create-plugin examples configurable-dynamic-plugin.md
and plugin-with-context-extension.md (provider objects without name, bare @Provider(), the troubleshooting
rows).
Tests
Red first. Each new test failed before its change:
the dts fixture, against an SDK build of the parent: @Provider() and every unnamed provider failed to compile;
the provider specs: the unnamed providers threw and the derived names read [ref];
the preset specs and the e2e: they failed with jest-preset-unit.js moved out of the package.
Unit
libs/di/src/__tests__/token.utils.spec.ts: tokenName() of a symbol (with, without and with an empty description),
of a string token and of an arrow function.
libs/di/src/__tests__/provider.metadata.spec.ts: the schema accepts metadata without name and still refuses ''.
providers without a name are accepted by the schema and named from a symbol, string or class token;
@Provider() and @Provider({ scope }) are named from the class, a @Provider() subclass of a named provider from
its own class, and a given name is kept;
an empty name is refused;
the dependency cycle message names symbol tokens (alpha -> beta -> alpha).
libs/sdk/src/provider/__tests__/decorator-object-providers.spec.ts: @App and @Plugin take value and class
providers without a name. The old "still require a name" case is replaced, and an empty name is still refused.
libs/testing/src/__tests__/jest-preset-unit.spec.ts, next to jest-preset.spec.ts:
Jest's own readConfig resolves preset: '@frontmcp/testing/jest-preset-unit' through the package exports;
with a ts-jest transform for .ts, .ts goes to ts-jest and node_modules/jose/**.js to the preset's @swc/jest;
the preset shares the e2e preset's transform and ignore patterns, and transpiles jose and @noble/* under npm and
pnpm layouts;
it has no timeout and no setup file;
it matches *.spec.ts(x) and leaves out e2e, perf, Playwright, node_modules and dist specs;
every file the package exports outside dist, and the shared base, is in the build assets.
libs/cli/src/commands/dev/__tests__/test.spec.ts (unchanged): the e2e preset still matches frontmcp test's
injected config.
E2E
apps/e2e/demo-e2e-dts-consumer, new fixture/providers-must-compile.ts. It compiles in a strict consumer project
against the built declarations:
AsyncProvider with and without inject, { provide, useValue }, symbol and string tokens;
@Provider() and @Provider({ scope }) with no name;
each in @FrontMcp, @App, runStdio, bootstrap, createDirect and runUnixSocket.
apps/e2e/demo-e2e-testing/e2e/jest-preset-unit.e2e.spec.ts runs fixture/ts-jest-cjs, a CommonJS ts-jest project
(module: commonjs, ts-jest type-checks) in a child Jest:
with preset: '@frontmcp/testing/jest-preset-unit' and a ts-jest .ts transform, its spec boots a server with createFetchHandler() and transparent auth (inline JWKS from TestTokenFactory), in its own process. A token jose verifies reaches a tool that reads an unnamed AsyncProvider, and a @ToolHook.Will('execute') plugin hook
records the call. A token signed with another key gets 401 and no hook call. 2 passed;
the same project without the preset fails with SyntaxError: Unexpected token 'export' from node_modules/jose/,
so the fixture really loads jose.

node scripts/fix-unused-imports.mjs, prettier on the changed files, and tsc --noEmit on the changed specs (the
only error is the known flow.metadata.ts module augmentation, outside this change).
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Provider declarations can omit a name; names are inferred from the provider token or class when available.
Added a Jest preset for unit tests, including CommonJS projects using ts-jest, with support for transforming ESM dependencies.
Bug Fixes
Improved provider-name display in logs, errors, and dependency-cycle reports.
Documentation
Updated provider guides to explain optional names and their defaults, and testing guides to cover unit preset setup and configuration.
The changes make provider names optional and assign fallback names from provider classes or tokens. They add provider declaration compile coverage. The testing package gains shared and unit-test Jest presets, with package exports, build assets, tests, documentation, and a CommonJS integration fixture.
Changes: Optional Provider Names
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Provider metadata and token naming libs/di/src/metadata/*, libs/di/src/utils/token.utils.ts, libs/di/src/__tests__/*
Provider metadata allows an omitted name while retaining the nonempty-string constraint when supplied. tokenName handles strings and symbols explicitly, and tests cover the naming behavior.
SDK provider name inference libs/sdk/src/common/decorators/provider.decorator.ts, libs/sdk/src/provider/provider.utils.ts, libs/sdk/src/common/schemas/annotated-class.schema.ts, libs/sdk/src/**/__tests__/*
The provider decorator accepts omitted metadata. Provider metadata collection assigns a name from class metadata or tokenName. Tests cover unnamed providers and empty names.
Provider documentation describes optional names, default naming sources, accepted definitions, and related troubleshooting guidance.
Jest Presets
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Shared Jest configuration libs/testing/jest-preset.base.js, libs/testing/jest-preset.js
A shared preset defines the Node environment, SWC transforms, module extensions, and ignore patterns. The existing preset imports the shared configuration and removes duplicated settings.
Unit preset, exports, and verification libs/testing/jest-preset-unit.js, libs/testing/package.json, libs/testing/project.json, libs/testing/src/__tests__/*, libs/testing/README.md, libs/testing/ARCHITECTURE.md, libs/skills/catalog/frontmcp-testing/*
The unit preset defines test discovery and exclusions. Package exports and CJS build assets include the presets. Tests and documentation cover resolution, transforms, matching, ignore patterns, and configuration.
A CommonJS fixture combines the unit preset with a TypeScript-only ts-jest transform. Its authentication tests check accepted and rejected tool calls. The end-to-end test compares runs with and without the preset.
The remaining issue can mislead users diagnosing invalid plugin exports but does not affect runtime behavior; correct the troubleshooting guidance before or alongside merge.

Explanation
The title names two changes: deriving a provider's name from its token, and adding a CommonJS unit Jest preset. The changeset covers both. The provider-name change touches provider metadata schemas, the decorator, tokenName, and provider utils. The preset change adds jest-preset-unit.js, the base preset, package exports, and the e2e fixture. The title is specific and uses the conventional commit form. It joins two unrelated changes with 'and', which makes it somewhat long at 85 characters, but it still identifies the primary changes.

Remove the obsolete provider-name requirements.
Line 221 says name is optional. The Common Patterns table at Line 621 says an unnamed provider object throws, and the checklist at Line 634 requires a name on every provider. Both instructions contradict the new contract. Update the table and checklist so readers do not reject valid provider definitions. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the “Exporting a provider” entry in the Common Patterns table and the
provider checklist so they no longer claim every provider must have a name or
that unnamed provider objects throw. Keep the guidance consistent with the
contract that provider names are optional, while retaining any valid export
requirements.

Follow-up on create-plugin.md:621 and :634 (obsolete provider-name requirements): valid, fixed in f9e6178. The Common Patterns row for exporting a provider now lists only the bare token (exports: [AuditLoggerToken]) as the wrong form, because exports takes the provider definitions from providers and a bare token throws at decoration. A provider object without name is valid now. The checklist item that required a name on every provider now says to set name only where its default (the class name, or a provider object's token name) isn't the name you want in logs and errors.
On the summary's Docstring coverage warning: no change. The new code follows the stack's rule of adding no comments unless one is necessary, and its behaviour is covered by the specs, the dts-consumer fixtures and the catalog entries listed in the description.

Separate the exports validation error from the providers error.
providers and exports use the same provider-item schema, but the plugin decorator only converts formatted.providers into the provider-specific InvalidDecoratorMetadataError. It does not handle formatted.exports. Therefore, a bare token in exports does not follow the @Plugin invalid metadata for "providers" path described here. Document the exports validation failure separately. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Outside-diff note on create-plugin.md:654-663 (separating the exports validation error from the providers one): out of scope for this fix, no change. The documented contract this PR relies on stands: a bare token in exports throws when @Plugin runs, as the reference section and the Common Patterns row say. Refining the troubleshooting row's error wording for the exports path is a separate docs change.
…kills line by default
Each SKILL.md resource in resources/list carried priority: 0.8, and some
clients fail the whole list on a numeric annotation. The new
skillsConfig.resourceAnnotations ('no-priority' by default, 'full', 'off')
keeps audience and lastModified and drops priority unless asked for.
The initialize instructions listed every skill's name and description, and
some clients copy them into each tool's description. The new default
injectInstructions: 'compact' sends one line with the skill count the
caller may see and where to read the skills; 'append', 'prepend' and
'replace' keep the full catalog.
An unknown value for either option, or any invalid skillsConfig, makes
@FrontMcp throw InvalidDecoratorMetadataError at boot.
…ternal provider serves skills
A read-only skillsConfig.externalProvider serves skills that skill://index.json
lists but the registry does not hold, so the compact line undercounted them, and
sent no line at all when every skill came from the provider. It now reads
"This server has skills: ..." in that case.
The catalog no longer says 'off' adds nothing about skills (the
sep2640InInstructions hints are still sent), and protocol-versions names the
skills line for server/discover.
A provider object without `name`, and a bare `@Provider()`, failed to compile and were refused at boot.
`name` is now optional in ProviderMetadata and both provider metadata schemas. It defaults to the class
name, a symbol token's description or a string token. `tokenName()` names symbol and string tokens instead
of `[ref]`, so provider errors and the dependency cycle message name them too.
A dts-consumer fixture covers AsyncProvider with and without inject, useValue, symbol and string tokens and
unnamed providers in @FrontMcp, @app, runStdio, bootstrap, createDirect and runUnixSocket.
…projects
A ts-jest CommonJS project failed with `Unexpected token 'export'` once an auth path loaded `jose`, and
the only preset was the e2e configuration `frontmcp test` generates. `@frontmcp/testing/jest-preset-unit`
compiles TypeScript and the SDK's ESM-only dependencies (`jose`, `@noble/*`) with Jest's default timeout,
no setup file and `*.spec.ts(x)` matching. A project that sets a ts-jest transform for `.ts` keeps the
preset's transform for those dependencies. Both presets share `jest-preset.base.js`.
An e2e fixture runs a ts-jest CommonJS project that verifies a token with jose and runs a plugin hook in
process, and shows the same project fails without the preset.
…l with an empty description [ref]
The provider name key is shared by every FrontMCP decorator and read through the
prototype chain, so a @Provider() class that extends a named one took the parent's
name. The normalizer now reads only the class's own name. tokenName() returns [ref]
for Symbol('') instead of an empty string, and no longer casts to any. New comments
are one line.
