fix(sdk): document hook priority order, sort the hook registry in run order and print the resolved order in dev mode - #985
Stacked on #984 (base fix/05-local-transport-safety, the top of #980 → #981 → #983 → #984).
What and why
Proposal item 1.3, the bug part only: hook priority runs in one direction while the SDK's own code said the other, and
there was no way to see the order hooks resolve to.
Every stage runs its hooks in ascendingpriority, lowest first (default 0). Nothing said so where users look: HookOptions.priority had no doc, and HookRegistry's comments said its lists were "sorted by priority (desc)",
which they were, before the flow re-sorted them ascending. Two plugins were written assuming "higher runs first": the
one meant to refuse a disabled feature ran after a setup gate, so users got the wrong refusal. Each plugin's spec ran
it alone, so nothing caught it.
The tie-breaks were implicit too: at equal priority, plugin and provider hooks run in registration order, before the
flow's own step, and an entry class's hooks (static first, then instance) run after it. For Around hooks, the
lowest priority is the outermost wrapper.
The plugin registry logged only hook counts, so the resolved order could not be seen.
This PR changes no run order. It adds docs and a dev-only log:
HookOptions.priority has a JSDoc line: lowest runs first (default 0), the lowest Around is outermost, and how
ties break.
HookRegistry keeps its lists in the order a stage runs them (lowest priority first, registration order on a tie)
instead of descending, and its comments say so. Every flow re-sorts these lists by priority before running them, and
the other readers (plugin-approval's store lookup, the enforced-metadata check, hook coverage, the result
decorator) only test membership or count, so no hook runs in a different order. The one other effect: a run builds
the CONTEXT-scoped providers its hooks run on in the list's order, so two such providers whose hooks have different
priorities are now built lowest priority first.
In dev mode (NODE_ENV=development) or with DEBUG=1 (the explicit debug flag the SDK already reads), a flow logs,
at info level, the order its hooks resolve to: once for each hook owner (the app of the entry a run is for) and
entry class with hooks of its own, on the flow's first run for it, never per request. Each line is a stage that has
hooks, with its steps in run order as type Class.method (priority); an Around hook's brackets hold what it
wraps. The flow's own steps are listed too, so a plugin's @Stage and an entry class's hooks show where they land
relative to them.
Outside dev mode and without DEBUG, the flow holds no log state and builds no string: the only cost is a check of
one field per run. Stage-map entries now keep a reference to their hook's metadata, which the print reads.
Out of scope (feature PR M07 on main): before/after ordering, the HookPhase bands, the _meta trace, and the
per-hook appliesTo: 'all-apps'.
User-facing change
What changed: the direction of hook priority is documented on the option; a dev-mode log prints the resolved
hook order. Run order is unchanged.
Before → after:
HookOptions.priority: no doc → Lowest runs first (default 0), and the lowest Around is outermost; ties run plugin and provider hooks in registration order, then the flow's own step, then the entry class's hooks.
Dev mode (NODE_ENV=development) or DEBUG=1: nothing → on the first run of a flow for a hook owner (and for each
entry class with hooks of its own), one info log record:
[FlowInstance] INFO Hook order of 'tools:call-tool' for 'billing', lowest priority first (an around hook wraps what its brackets hold):
execute: will FeatureGatePlugin.refuseDisabled (-10) → will SetupGatePlugin.requireSetup (10) → stage CallToolFlow.execute (0)
Any other environment: unchanged, nothing logged.
frontmcp.dev pages affected (if known): the plugin hooks reference (https://frontmcp.dev/reference/sdk/plugin):
hook options / priority, and a "Hook order" section (direction, ties, Around nesting, the dev-mode print).
Skills catalog entries updated:
frontmcp-development/references/create-plugin-hooks.md: a new "Hook Order" section that states the direction,
the ties and the Around nesting in one place, with an example of two plugins on the same stage and a "Seeing the
Resolved Order" subsection for the dev-mode print; the @Finally, @Stage, HookOptions and "Registering
Plugins" paragraphs link to it, and the troubleshooting row for hooks running in the wrong order now says lower
runs first and how to log the order.
Tests
Unit (libs/sdk):
hooks/__tests__/hooks.utils.spec.ts: HookRegistry lists a flow, a stage, an owner's hooks and an entry class's
hooks lowest priority first, in registration order on a tie, and serves inherited hooks in priority order after its
own hooks of the same priority.
hooks/__tests__/flow-hooks.behaviour.spec.ts: two plugins on one stage run lowest priority first whatever order
the app lists them in; ties run in registration order with plugin hooks before the tool class's; a plugin @Stage runs before the flow's own step and a tool class's after it; Around hooks nest lowest priority
outermost, around every step of the stage.
flows/__tests__/flow-stage-hook-lists.spec.ts: in dev mode the first call logs, once and at info level, the
exact resolved order (plugin, tool-class and flow steps, Around brackets, Finally); a tool without class hooks,
a tool with a static hook and an unknown tool (no owner) each log their own order once; DEBUG=1 enables it
outside dev mode; nothing is logged otherwise. describeHookOrder skips stages no hook joined, names a step
without a target after the flow class, and nests two Around hooks lowest priority outermost around the stage's
steps only, with its Will, Did and Finally hooks outside the brackets.
E2E (apps/e2e/demo-e2e-hooks/e2e/hook-order.e2e.spec.ts, server src/main.hook-order.ts): an app lists a setup
gate (priority 10) before a feature gate (priority -10) on Will('execute'), and a recorder shows the feature gate
ran first; without dev mode the server logs no hook order; a server started with NODE_ENV=development logs the execute line above exactly once over two calls. The spec reads the logs once the tool's own gate-order answered
line, logged after the hook order, has arrived, since a call's output can reach the test after its answer. The
server without dev mode is started with NODE_ENV=test and DEBUG=0, so a runner's DEBUG=1 (which also shows the
test servers' output) does not turn the print on.
Red first: the registry tests failed on the descending lists, and the print tests (unit and e2e) failed with no log.
The run-order tests passed before the change, as they should: they pin the order this PR documents.
Ran:
nx run-many -t lint test build -p sdk skills demo-e2e-hooks plugin-approval observability: sdk 7356 tests,
skills 249, plugin-approval 427, observability 498, all green; no lint warnings on changed lines.
nx test demo-e2e-hooks (23) and nx test demo-e2e-approval (6): green; the hook-order e2e also with DEBUG=1
set in the runner. In the parallel run above, the finally-hooks e2e's "log what an ignored Finally hook threw" (from fix(sdk): run Finally hooks on every stage outcome and close spans for refused answers #980) read server.getLogs() before the
server's stdout arrived once; it passes alone, twice.
tsc --noEmit on the changed SDK specs and the new e2e files; prettier on every changed file; node scripts/fix-unused-imports.mjs origin/fix/05-local-transport-safety (no change).
By hand: started main.hook-order.ts with NODE_ENV=development and called gate-order twice: the order was
logged on the first call only.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Hooks now run from lowest to highest priority. Ties follow plugin or provider registration order, then flow-step order, then entry-class hooks. Around hooks with lower priorities wrap those with higher priorities.
Resolved hook order is logged once per owner and entry class in development mode or when debug logging is enabled, making execution order easier to inspect.
Documentation
Added guidance on hook ordering, execution stages, priority settings, around-hook nesting, and using logs to inspect resolved order.
…lved order in dev mode
HookRegistry said its lists were sorted by descending priority while every stage runs its hooks
lowest first. Its lists now hold the order a stage runs them, HookOptions.priority documents the
direction, the ties and the Around nesting, and a flow logs the order its hooks resolve to on its
first run for each hook owner and entry class, in dev mode or with DEBUG only.
…nd of when server output arrives
The server without dev mode inherited the runner's DEBUG=1, which turned the print on; it now starts
with NODE_ENV=test and DEBUG=0. The spec reads the logs once the tool's own line, logged after the
hook order, has arrived. A unit test pins how two Around hooks nest in the print.

Document the context-stage insertion exception.
The ascending-priority rule implies that a lower-priority entry-class instance @Stage hook can run before createToolCallContext. However, createToolCallContext adds the instance hooks while its own step is already running, so FlowInstance.runList executes them only after that step returns. Authors may therefore rely on an order that cannot occur.
Suggested fix
Hooks on one stage run in `priority` order, **lowest first**; the default is `0`, and a higher number does not run earlier. A stage runs its `@Will` hooks, then its steps (the flow's own step and the `@Stage` hooks) wrapped by its `@Around` hooks, then its `@Did` hooks, then its `@Finally` hooks, each list in `priority` order.
+On `createToolCallContext`, entry-class instance `@Stage` hooks are added while the flow step runs. They therefore run after that step, regardless of priority.

…error stages before finalize, in the hook order print
- An entry class's instance @stage hooks on the stage that builds its
instance join while that stage's step runs, so they run right after it
whatever their priority; the dev-mode hook order print now lists them
there. Each flow's join registers its context stage for the print.
- The print lists a failed run's error stages before its finalize stages,
the order they run in.
- Catalog: the Hook Order section states the context-stage exception.
Outside-diff finding on create-plugin-hooks.md:99-131 (the context-stage exception): valid, fixed in d762d73. The Hook Order section now says that an entry class's instance @Stage hooks on the stage that builds its instance (createToolCallContext, createResourceContext, createPromptContext, createAgentContext, createJobContext) join while that stage's own step runs, so they run right after the step whatever their priority. It also says the hook order print lists them there, which is the code side of the same fix.
The merge of fix/05-local-transport-safety in 3eee6a9 also brings in #980's newest Finally-hook fixes (aborts recorded, state undone after a dropped signal) and #983's ctx.error wording.
