Stacked on #1001

What and why

Proposal item 2.4 (a): result handles for answers too large to send whole.

The reported problem: a tool that returns a large list (an export, a search, a log) either fills the model's
context, or, with the answer budget from #1001, loses the items the budget leaves out, with no way for the model to get
them back. The model needs to see what the answer holds and then read only the parts it needs.

What this PR adds, as a new package @frontmcp/plugin-result-handles:

  • Folding. On the fitAnswer stage of tools:call-tool (a Will('fitAnswer') hook), before the answer budget,
an answer whose data (structuredContent, or its one text content) is larger than thresholdBytes (16 KB by
default, at least 1024) as UTF-8 JSON is kept in a store, and the client gets { preview, shape, handle } as
structuredContent and as its text, plus a text line naming result_query, the handle and the TTL.
    _meta['frontmcp/result-handle'] carries { handle, bytes, ttlSeconds }.
    • preview: the first preview.items of each list (5) and preview.chars of each string (500), the first 50 keys of
      each object, 8 levels deep.
    • shape: { type, length?, keys?, moreKeys?, items? } at every level: the keys, types, list and string lengths, and
      a list's first item.
    • foldPolicy(toolName, answer, { bytes, fullName, request }) decides which answers over the threshold fold.
    • Left alone: answers a tool gets from this.callTool() (ctx.isClientCall()), error results, answers that render
a widget, answers with images, audio, resources or several texts, result_query's own answers, and a stateless
anonymous call, whose handle nobody could read back. When the store fails to keep an answer, it is sent whole and
      the plugin logs a warning.
  • Output schemas. A client checks structuredContent against the outputSchema it was listed, so a tool with an
output schema folds only when the schema admits the folded form: a Zod schema must accept it with no undeclared key
(the tool's own output parse under the undeclaredKeys: 'fail' output policy), and a JSON Schema (an OpenAPI or
remote tool's) must validate it. foldedAnswerSchema is exported to add as a union member
(z.union([reportSchema, foldedAnswerSchema]), which tools/list lists as { type: 'object', anyOf }). Otherwise the answer is sent whole (and the
budget, if any, fits it), and the plugin logs a warning naming the tool once.
  • result_query. Reads a slice of the stored answer: path as a dot path ($.rows[2].title, rows.2.title,
$["odd.key"], the syntax the budget note uses) or a JSON pointer (/rows/2/title); offset and limit, or page,
over a list's items (20 by default) or a string's characters (2000); fields keeps only those keys of the object or
of each object of the list. It answers { path, value, total?, offset?, nextOffset? }. A slice larger than
thresholdBytes is refused, so a query never undoes the fold. With the plugin on several apps the server lists one
result_query, and it reads the handles every app's copy folded.
  • Store. Built with createStorage() from @frontmcp/utils (storage, { type: 'auto' } by default: memory,
Redis, Vercel KV, Upstash or the SQLite store), through createResultHandleStore(); each answer is set with
ttlSeconds (600 by default). A memory store holds 1000 answers at most (DEFAULT_MEMORY_MAX_ENTRIES, dropping the
oldest) unless storage.memory.maxEntries says otherwise. The store disconnects at shutdown (onShutdown).
  • Security. A handle is randomUUID() from @frontmcp/utils, drawn before and independent of the answer. It is
bound to the call's verified session and, unless anonymous, its authenticated subject (this.auth.user.sub). Another
session, another caller, an expired handle and an unknown one all get the same RESULT_HANDLE_NOT_FOUND, never the
data, and the message does not repeat the handle. A handle that is not a UUID is not looked up.
  • Encryption at rest. The store never sees the handle: each answer is encrypted with AES-256-GCM, and its
encryption key and its storage key are both derived (HKDF-SHA256, @frontmcp/utils) from the handle, the session
and the subject. Redis or SQLite holds nothing readable without the handle, and another session's or caller's lookup
finds no record at all, the same path as an unknown or expired handle, with no owner comparison to time. A record
that does not decrypt is treated as missing.
  • Errors. ResultHandleNotFoundError (RESULT_HANDLE_NOT_FOUND, 404), ResultPathNotFoundError
    (RESULT_PATH_NOT_FOUND, 404) and ResultSliceTooLargeError (RESULT_SLICE_TOO_LARGE, 413) are public errors with a
remedy; page with offset, or a page so large that its offset is not a safe integer, is INVALID_INPUT.
  • Validation. The options are a strict Zod schema; an invalid one (thresholdBytes under 1024, a fractional or
zero ttlSeconds, a foldPolicy that is not a function, an unknown key) throws ResultHandlesConfigurationError
    from init(), naming each problem.

SDK change: CallToolFlow.isClientCall() is public, so a hook on the answer stages can skip in-process calls the way
fitAnswer, shapeAnswer and meterAnswer do.

Different from the plan, and why:

  • The folding hook is Will('fitAnswer'), not a replacement of the stage. The budget still runs on what the plugin
    leaves, folded or not.
  • A stateless anonymous call is not folded, rather than bound to nobody: no later request could prove it is the
    same caller.
  • A store failure sends the answer whole rather than failing the call: the answer goes to the same caller the tool
    answers anyway.
  • Answers are encrypted at rest, always, with keys derived from the handle and its owner, not a server secret:
it needs no configuration, keeps Redis or SQLite dumps unreadable, and makes "not yours" the same lookup miss as
    "unknown".

User-facing change

  • What changed:
    • New package @frontmcp/plugin-result-handles: ResultHandlesPlugin (options thresholdBytes, ttlSeconds,
preview, foldPolicy, storage, namespace), the result_query tool (ResultQueryTool,
      RESULT_QUERY_TOOL_NAME), foldedAnswerSchema, RESULT_HANDLE_META_KEY ('frontmcp/result-handle'),
createResultHandleStore(), ResultHandleStore, DEFAULT_MEMORY_MAX_ENTRIES, the tokens ResultHandleStoreToken and
ResultHandlesConfigToken, and the errors ResultHandleNotFoundError, ResultPathNotFoundError,
      ResultSliceTooLargeError, ResultHandlesConfigurationError.
    • New error codes RESULT_HANDLE_NOT_FOUND, RESULT_PATH_NOT_FOUND, RESULT_SLICE_TOO_LARGE,
      RESULT_HANDLES_CONFIGURATION.
    • @frontmcp/sdk: isClientCall() on the tools:call-tool hook ctx (was private).
  • Before → after: nothing changes for a server without the plugin. With it, a client's answer over the threshold
becomes { preview, shape, handle }, and the server lists a result_query tool.
  • frontmcp.dev pages affected (if known): a new plugin page (/reference/plugins/result-handles), the plugins
overview, and the plugin hooks page (ctx.isClientCall() on the answer stages).
  • Skills catalog entries updated:
    • frontmcp-development/references/result-handles-plugin.md (new), with its row in skills-manifest.json;
    • frontmcp-development/SKILL.md (routing table, reading order, related skills);
    • frontmcp-development/references/official-plugins.md (8 plugins, a Result Handles section; the manifest
      description too) and create-plugin.md (the plugin count and list);
    • frontmcp-development/references/create-plugin-hooks.md (ctx.isClientCall(), and a Will('fitAnswer') hook
      that answers before the budget).

Tests

Unit (plugins/plugin-result-handles, 81 tests, 98.9% statements, 96.7% branches, 96.9% functions):

  • folded-answer.spec.ts: the preview at every level (list items, characters, no split surrogate pair, 50 keys, empty
    past 8 levels); the shape (types, lengths, the first item, 50 keys and moreKeys, undescribed past 8 levels);
    foldedAnswerSchema in a union.
  • result-query.spec.ts: dot paths, quoted keys, JSON pointers with ~0 / ~1, and refused syntax (a quoted key
with an invalid escape included); ranges, pages,
the last page, page with offset, fields, string ranges, whole values, and paths with no value (out of range,
a key on a list or a number, __proto__).
  • result-handle.store.spec.ts: a random UUID per handle; another session, another caller, an anonymous caller or no
session read nothing; a caller-only binding; unknown and malformed handles; expiry after the TTL; the stored record
holds neither the answer, the handle, the session nor the subject in the clear; another owner looks up a different
key, which holds nothing; a tampered or unparseable record reads as missing; the stores listed per scope; disconnect
    at shutdown.
  • result-handles.options.spec.ts: defaults (the 1000-answer memory cap included), kept options, an explicit
memory.maxEntries kept, each refused option with its message, and refusal from init() and the constructor.
  • result-handles.plugin.spec.ts, through connected clients: the folded answer, its text, note and _meta; a small
answer left alone; the policy's arguments and refusal; one text and one JSON text folded; a union schema folds; a
strict schema is sent whole with one warning; JSON Schema tools that do, do not and cannot be checked; a store
    failure sends the answer whole with a warning; media, several texts, errors and this.callTool() left alone;
result_query by range, page, path and fields; a slice over the threshold; a page whose offset would overflow is
INVALID_INPUT; a path with no value; another session (with no handle in the answer) and another caller in the same
session get RESULT_HANDLE_NOT_FOUND; expiry; on two apps, each with its own copy, one listed result_query reads
both apps' handles; a call with no session and no caller.

E2E:

  • apps/e2e/demo-e2e-answer-shaping/e2e/result-handles.e2e.spec.ts (new app results with the plugin on a server
with a 64 KB budget, and app archive with its own copy of the plugin, 6 tests): a 135 KB answer is folded before
    the budget (no budget note); result_query reads a range with fields, the last page and a string inside an item;
the one listed result_query reads a handle the archive app's copy folded; another session gets
RESULT_HANDLE_NOT_FOUND, with no data and no handle; the handle expires after its 4-second TTL; a tool whose output
schema cannot admit the folded form is sent to the budget instead.
  • apps/e2e/demo-e2e-dts-consumer/fixture/answer-shaping-must-compile.ts: a Will('fitAnswer') hook calls
ctx.isClientCall() and ctx.respond() against the published declarations.

Red first: the e2e spec failed 5 of 5 before the app and plugin existed (the tools were not found) while #1001's 10
passed; the store-failure test failed before the fallback, and $["a\x"] threw a SyntaxError before the review fix.
In the second review, the two-app tests (unit and e2e: RESULT_HANDLE_NOT_FOUND for the second app's handle), the
encryption and owner-key store tests, the memory cap, the overflowing page (INVALID_OUTPUT) and the handle in the
not-found message all failed before their fixes.

Ran: nx test plugin-result-handles (81), nx test sdk (586 suites, 7628 tests), nx lint sdk plugin-result-handles,
nx build sdk plugin-result-handles demo-e2e-answer-shaping, nx test demo-e2e-answer-shaping (16/16),
nx test demo-e2e-dts-consumer (16/16), nx test skills (249), tsc --noEmit -p the plugin's tsconfig.spec.json
and tsconfig.lib.json and the e2e app's tsconfig.app.json, node scripts/fix-unused-imports.mjs, and prettier --check on the
changed files.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a plugin that folds eligible large tool answers into a preview and handle, allowing callers to query specific slices, pages, fields, or nested values.
    • Handles are scoped to the caller and session and expire after a configurable time.
    • Added a demo showcasing large-result previews and queries, including access restrictions and expiration.
    • Made isClientCall() available to plugin hooks.
  • Documentation
    • Added setup and usage guidance for the Result Handles plugin and included it in the official plugin catalog.

…a shape and a handle that result_query reads

New package @frontmcp/plugin-result-handles. On the fitAnswer stage, before
the answer budget, an answer whose data is over thresholdBytes is kept in a
createStorage() store with a TTL, and the client gets { preview, shape,
handle } in its place. result_query reads slices of it by a dot path or a
JSON pointer, an offset and limit or a page, and fields.

- A handle is a random UUID bound to the call's verified session and its
authenticated caller; any other session or caller, an expired handle and an
  unknown one all get RESULT_HANDLE_NOT_FOUND.
- foldPolicy(toolName, answer, context) decides which answers fold.
- A tool with an output schema folds only when the schema admits the folded
form (foldedAnswerSchema in a union); otherwise it is sent whole and logged
  once.
- Options are validated by Zod; invalid ones throw
  ResultHandlesConfigurationError from init().

CallToolFlow.isClientCall() is now public, so a hook on the answer stages can
skip in-process calls as they do.
…ot keep it

A store that failed to save a folded answer (Redis down, say) made the tool
call fail. The answer now goes to the caller whole, as without the plugin,
and the plugin logs a warning naming the tool and the reason. The README
also says that folded answers are kept unencrypted until their TTL, and how
to cap a memory store with maxEntries.
…escape as RESULT_PATH_NOT_FOUND

A result_query path such as $["a\x"] reached JSON.parse, whose SyntaxError
was wrapped as a tool execution error, so the model got no error code and
no remedy.
…e handle and owner, and read every app's handles

- The store keeps each answer encrypted with AES-256-GCM; its encryption key and its storage key are both derived
with HKDF-SHA256 from the handle, the session and the subject. The storage holds nothing readable without the
handle, and another session's or caller's lookup misses like an unknown or expired handle, with no owner
  comparison left to time.
- RESULT_HANDLE_NOT_FOUND no longer repeats the handle in its message.
- With the plugin on several apps, the one listed result_query reads the handles each app's copy folded; before,
the second app's handles were never readable with memory storage.
- A memory store holds 1000 answers at most (DEFAULT_MEMORY_MAX_ENTRIES) unless storage.memory.maxEntries is set.
- A result_query page whose offset would not be a safe integer is INVALID_INPUT instead of INVALID_OUTPUT.

… and take init providers

An answer with structuredContent and several text contents was folded from its
structuredContent alone, so the other texts were neither sent nor kept for
result_query. It is now left whole, as an answer of several texts was.
ResultHandlesPlugin.init({ providers }) failed with Unrecognized key
"providers"; the extra providers every plugin init() takes are now set apart
before the options are checked.

The docs also say that a text that is a JSON object or array reaches the fold
policy and result_query parsed.

…says something else whole

An answer with structuredContent and one text that was not a copy of it (a
note or a warning) was folded from structuredContent, so the text was lost.
It now folds only when the text repeats structuredContent as the SDK writes
it: its JSON, or the primitive that { content } wraps. The README example
also imports z.

  • Missing z import in the README schema example: fixed in 941c23c; the example imports Tool, ToolContext and z from @frontmcp/sdk, as the catalog guide does.

Local runs on 941c23c: nx test plugin-result-handles 82/82, nx test skills 249/249, nx test demo-e2e-answer-shaping 16/16.

… the answer's text

String() throws on an object whose toString is not callable, so a
structuredContent of { content: <such an object> } beside another text made
the fold hook throw and failed the tool call. Only a primitive is now
compared with the text.
