fix(sdk): list union output schemas and stop stripping undeclared output keys silently - #981
Proposal items 1.5 and 1.6: a tool's output schema was handled silently in two ways.
1.5: a union output schema was never listed.tools/list kept an output schema only when its JSON Schema had a
top-level type: 'object'. With zod 4, z.union([...]) serializes to a bare anyOf and z.discriminatedUnion(...) to
a bare oneOf, so both were dropped. The drop was silent: getRawOutputSchema() returned undefined, so even the
existing "outputSchema without type: 'object'" warning in tools/list never fired. On top of that, outputSchema: z.union([...]) did not compile: zod 4's z.union infers a readonly options tuple, and the @Tool types declared a
mutable one, so users had to cast.
A union (anyOf / oneOf, nested unions included) whose members are all object schemas is now listed as { type: 'object', anyOf | oneOf: [...] }, the shape the elicitation fallback already advertises. A member registered with an
id (.meta({ id })) serializes to a $ref into $defs; the check follows those references, so such a union, and an
object registered with an id, is listed too. A union that refers back to itself is left out, because a validator can
follow that reference forever.
When elicitation is enabled, the fallback wrapper nested the original schema under oneOf[0], $defs included, so
its #/$defs/... references no longer resolved from the document root and the MCP client failed tools/list
(can't resolve reference). The wrapper now keeps $defs at the root.
The @Tool and ToolMetadata output types accept readonly union tuples, so z.union([...]) and z.discriminatedUnion(...) need no cast.
Any other Zod output schema that has to be left out (an array, a nullable object, a union with a non-object member, a
schema with no JSON Schema form such as a z.date() field) now logs one warning at startup, naming the tool and the
reason. A tool whose output.schemaMode resolves to 'none' asked for no schema and stays quiet. The check runs once
in the scope after its tools are registered, so it sees the tool's app and the server's policy. Primitive outputs
('string', z.number(), z.date(), …), media literals and multi-content arrays are still never listed, by design,
and stay quiet.
skill:// / skills HTTP pages and the CodeCall plugin read the same getOutputJsonSchema() / getRawOutputSchema(),
so they now show union output schemas too.
1.6: undeclared keys were stripped silently.tools/call parsed the answer with zod's default strip, so a key the
tool returned but never declared simply vanished, with no way to notice it or to opt out. Stripping is load-bearing for
security on the UI path (declaredOutput, #645), so that path keeps stripping whatever the policy.
New output.undeclaredKeys: 'strip' | 'warn' | 'keep' | 'fail', declarable on @FrontMcp, @App and @Tool
(Tool > App > server cascade, like schemaMode), validated by the shared outputPolicySchema, so an unknown value
fails at boot.
tools/list and tools/call read the cascade through one lookup, toolOutputPolicies(tool, scope), which finds
the app through the tool's lineage. A tool that a plugin or an adapter of an app contributes now follows that app's output (schemaMode, schemaDescriptionFormat and undeclaredKeys). Before, both flows matched the tool's
direct owner only, so the app's policy skipped those tools.
'strip' drops undeclared keys (the old behaviour).
'warn' drops them and logs a warning naming each key path once per tool (costCenter, lines[].margin). A tool
names at most 100 key paths, so answers keyed by ids cannot grow the record without bound.
'keep' sends them in structuredContent and the text content. tools/list then lists that tool's schema without additionalProperties: false, at every level, so MCP clients that validate structuredContent against the listed
schema (the MCP TypeScript client does) accept the answer.
'fail' refuses the answer with InvalidOutputError (_meta.code: 'INVALID_OUTPUT'); the internal message names
the keys, and the public message stays generic.
Default: 'warn' when NODE_ENV=development, 'strip' otherwise (detected with isDevelopment() from @frontmcp/utils, as the rest of the SDK does).
A call that renders the tool's UI sends declared keys only, whatever the policy: under 'keep', the finalize stage
parses with 'strip' when a UI result was built. Without this, a client that takes no structuredContent (platform type claude)
would have received the undeclared keys through the parsed structuredContent.
Undeclared keys are found by comparing the answer with what the schema parsed it to. An output schema with a
transform anywhere (.transform(), z.preprocess(), .pipe(), a codec) can rename or drop keys, so that comparison
means nothing for it: such a schema is always stripped, and 'warn', 'keep' and 'fail' do not apply. Without
this, 'keep' would put back a key a transform deliberately dropped. @frontmcp/lazy-zod gains hasTransform(schema)
for the check. These schemas are not listed in tools/list either (zod cannot express a transform in JSON Schema),
and now log the startup warning.
The policy applies to a Zod or raw-shape outputSchema. A JSON Schema output (the OpenAPI adapter, a remote app) is
not parsed, so its answer is sent as the upstream returned it, as before.
z.union keeps the first member that matches, so a key that only a later member declares is stripped, and 'warn'
and 'fail' report it. The catalog says to put the widest member first, or to use z.discriminatedUnion.
The policy is threaded through buildParsedToolResult → parseSingleValue → parseAgainstOutputSchema and ToolEntry.parseOutput / safeParseOutput(raw, options?). Callers that pass no options (the UI path, the cache
plugin) keep the strip behaviour.
@frontmcp/utils gains findDroppedKeys(original, parsed), which the SDK and the new matcher share.
@frontmcp/testing gains expect(answer).toPassOutputSchemaWhole(outputSchema): the answer matches the schema (a
Zod schema or a raw shape) and has no undeclared key; the failure names the keys. McpMatchers is now the union of McpResultMatchers and McpUiMatchers (same members), so the Jest augmentations extend two interfaces and need no eslint-disable for no-empty-object-type, which the pre-commit hook used to strip.
User-facing change
What changed:
Union-of-object output schemas (z.union, z.discriminatedUnion, members registered with .meta({ id })
included) are listed in tools/list and compile without a cast.
An output schema that cannot be listed logs a startup warning naming the tool, unless its schemaMode is 'none'.
A tool contributed by a plugin or an adapter of an app follows the app's output policy.
With elicitation enabled, a listed schema that uses $defs stays valid for MCP clients.
New output.undeclaredKeys option ('strip' | 'warn' | 'keep' | 'fail') on @FrontMcp, @App and @Tool.
Default change: in development (NODE_ENV=development) undeclared answer keys are still stripped but now logged
as a warning, naming each key once per tool. Production behaviour ('strip') is unchanged.
New @frontmcp/testing matcher toPassOutputSchemaWhole(outputSchema).
New @frontmcp/utils export findDroppedKeys(original, parsed); new @frontmcp/lazy-zod export hasTransform(schema); new SDK exports UNDECLARED_KEYS_POLICIES, UndeclaredKeysPolicy, resolveUndeclaredKeysPolicy, withUndeclaredKeysAllowed, OutputParseOptions.
Before → after:
outputSchema: z.discriminatedUnion('kind', [...]): no outputSchema in tools/list, silently → { type: 'object', oneOf: [...] }. z.union([...]): compile error without a cast → compiles, listed with anyOf.
outputSchema: z.array(z.object(...)): left out silently → left out with a startup warning: Tool "<name>": tools/list leaves out its outputSchema because it is not an object schema or a union of object schemas. ....
Undeclared keys in an answer, in development: dropped silently → dropped, with Tool "<name>" answered with keys its outputSchema does not declare, so they were stripped: <keys>. ... logged once per new key.
@App({ output }) on an app whose plugin or adapter contributes tools: ignored for those tools → applied to them.
z.union([a.meta({ id }), b.meta({ id })]) output: not listed → listed as { type: 'object', anyOf: [{ $ref }, …], $defs }.
New: 'keep' passes undeclared keys through (and opens the listed schema), 'fail' refuses the answer with INVALID_OUTPUT.
frontmcp.dev pages affected (if known): the tool output schema reference (outputSchema, "Advertisement in
tools/list", the output policy), the @FrontMcp / @App / @Tooloutput option reference, the @frontmcp/testing matchers reference, and the @frontmcp/lazy-zod reference (hasTransform).
Skills catalog entries updated:
create-tool/references/output-schema.md (union listing, startup warning, new "Undeclared keys" section, matcher)
schemaDescriptionFormat: 'summary' describes an object union member by member (**Returns** one of:), following $ref members into $defs, and leaves the suffix out when a member cannot be summarized (before: **Returns:** \object``).
Keys of an object that parsing replaces with a non-object (a z.coerce.* field, a .catch() value) count as dropped: 'warn' logs them, 'fail' refuses, and toPassOutputSchemaWhole fails.
'summary' renders a schema's shared root properties and then its union options (and one of:), where it used to show the root properties only.
Under 'keep', a key that can't be put back, because the schema coerced the object holding it to a primitive, refuses the answer with INVALID_OUTPUT and names the key (before: lost silently).
'warn', 'keep' and 'fail' stop at values the parsed answer holds by reference, so a cycle under a z.any() field no longer overflows the stack.
Documented: an object schema's own unknown-key handling wins over the policy. z.strictObject() refuses undeclared keys even under 'keep', and z.looseObject() keeps them even under 'strip' or 'fail' (unchanged behaviour, now pinned by tests).
Tests
Red first: the new unit and e2e cases below failed on release/1.10.x (union not listed, undeclaredKeys unknown, z.union fixture not compiling) and pass with this change.
Unit:
libs/sdk/src/tool/__tests__/tool-instance.output-schema.spec.ts (new, 30): union / discriminated union / nested
union listed as type: 'object'; unions and objects registered with an id listed through their $refs; a recursive
union and a mixed registered union left out; arrays, nullable objects, mixed unions and unconvertible schemas left
out with a reason; primitives, media, multi-content and empty shapes have none; each policy through parseOutput / safeParseOutput (nested keys and arrays, unions, non-finite numbers); transforms always stripped, and 'keep'
never puts back a key a transform dropped.
libs/sdk/src/tool/flows/__tests__/call-tool.output-schema.spec.ts (+11): default strip outside development, 'warn'
default in development logging once, 'warn' naming only keys not reported before and stopping at 100 key paths,
server 'keep', tool 'fail' over server, app over server, an app's policy applied to its plugin's tool, the UI
path stripping under 'keep' for a client with and without structuredContent (the second one fails without the
finalize guard), and an unknown policy refused at boot.
libs/sdk/src/tool/flows/__tests__/tools-list.output-schema.spec.ts (new, 7): unions listed; schemas closed by
default and open at every level under 'keep'; a plugin's tool open under its app's 'keep' while other apps stay
closed; the startup warning names the tool once and stays quiet for a tool, an app (its plugin's tool) or a server
whose schemaMode is 'none'.
libs/sdk/src/elicitation/helpers/__tests__/extend-output-schema.spec.ts (+1): $defs stays at the root of the
elicitation wrapper.
apps/e2e/demo-e2e-direct/e2e/tools-list-output-schema.e2e.spec.ts (+5): z.union listed with anyOf, z.discriminatedUnion with oneOf, an MCP client validating a union answer against the listed schema, a union of
id-registered objects listed with $defs and validated by an MCP client, and the same with elicitation enabled
(fails with can't resolve reference #/$defs/... in the client's listTools without the $defs fix).
apps/e2e/demo-e2e-direct/e2e/tool-output-schema-modes.e2e.spec.ts (+6): 'strip', 'warn' (one warning), 'keep' through an MCP client that validates structuredContent against the listed schema, 'fail' → INVALID_OUTPUT, and the UI path stripping under 'keep' for a structuredContent client and a client detected as platform type claude.
apps/e2e/demo-e2e-dts-consumer/fixture/output-schemas-must-compile.ts (new): z.union / z.discriminatedUnion
output schemas with no cast, output.undeclaredKeys on @Tool, @App, @FrontMcp; tool-must-fail.ts rejects undeclaredKeys: 'drop'.
Ran:

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Tool outputs now support configurable handling of undeclared fields: strip them, warn, keep them, or reject the result. Defaults vary by environment, and settings can be configured at the tool, app, or server level.
Object unions and discriminated unions can be listed as tool output schemas, with union options reflected in descriptions.
Added a test matcher to verify tool results match their output schema without extra fields.
Unsupported output schemas can produce startup warnings explaining why they aren’t listed.
Bug Fixes
UI-rendered results omit undeclared fields, even when the keep policy is configured.
Elicitation schema extensions now preserve root definitions when adding fallback options.
Documentation
Expanded guidance on output schemas, undeclared fields, and schema testing.
A union whose members are all object schemas (z.union, z.discriminatedUnion)
is now listed in tools/list as { type: 'object', anyOf | oneOf }, and the
@tool output types accept zod 4's readonly union tuples, so no cast is
needed. Any other Zod output schema that tools/list has to leave out now
logs one warning at registration, naming the tool and the reason.
The new output.undeclaredKeys policy ('strip' | 'warn' | 'keep' | 'fail'),
declarable on @FrontMcp, @app and @tool, decides what tools/call does with
keys an answer carries that its outputSchema does not declare. It defaults
to 'warn' in development and 'strip' otherwise. Under 'keep', tools/list
lists the schema open to undeclared keys. A call that renders the tool's UI
always sends declared keys only.
Adds findDroppedKeys to @frontmcp/utils and the toPassOutputSchemaWhole
matcher to @frontmcp/testing.
…d-keys policy
Undeclared keys are found by comparing an answer with what its output
schema parsed it to. A schema with a transform (.transform(), z.preprocess(),
.pipe(), a codec) can rename or drop keys, so for it that comparison names
keys that are declared: 'warn' warned wrongly, 'fail' refused valid output,
and 'keep' put back a key the transform had dropped. Such a schema is now
always stripped, and the toPassOutputSchemaWhole matcher says it cannot
compare keys through a transform.
Adds hasTransform(schema) to @frontmcp/lazy-zod for the check, and restores
the eslint directive in matcher-types.ts that the import-only pre-commit
config removed.
…icy by app lineage
- List a union whose members are schemas registered with an id (`$ref` into `$defs`), and an
object registered with an id; a recursive union stays out.
- Keep `$defs` at the root of the elicitation fallback wrapper, so MCP clients can compile the
listed schema.
- Resolve `output` for tools/list and tools/call through one lineage-aware lookup, so a tool a
plugin or adapter of an app contributes follows that app's policy.
- Move the unlisted outputSchema warning to a scope pass that skips `schemaMode: 'none'`.
- Name each undeclared key once per tool under 'warn', capped at 100 key paths per tool.
- Split McpMatchers so the Jest augmentations need no no-empty-object-type directive.

Walkthrough
The SDK adds configurable handling for undeclared tool-output keys and expands output-schema advertisement to support object unions. The changes also add output-validation utilities, a whole-schema testing matcher, and coverage and documentation for these behaviors.

The SDK adds strip, warn, keep, and fail undeclared-key policies, policy resolution, object-union schema recognition, and transform detection. Union types accept readonly tuples. Elicitation schema extension preserves root $defs.
Output parsing applies the resolved undeclared-key policy. It strips keys by default, can preserve or reject them, and can report undeclared paths. UI-rendered results use declared keys. Tests and guidance describe policy behavior and its limitations.
The testing library adds toPassOutputSchemaWhole for Zod schemas and raw shapes. It reports schema mismatches and undeclared keys, and does not compare keys through transforms.

Reject unpreservable coercion under 'keep'.
For z.object({ payload: z.coerce.string() }), parsing { payload: { secret: 'x' } } produces a primitive for payload. withUndeclaredKeys then returns that primitive, so payload.secret is silently lost. Returning the original object would violate the string schema.
Reject this specific shape mismatch with InvalidOutputError before withUndeclaredKeys runs. Keep hasTransform unchanged. Adding coercion to that shared predicate would break the existing matcher assertion, which must continue reporting payload.secret.

…eys 'keep' cannot put back
- findDroppedKeys and the 'keep' merge stop where the parsed answer holds the
same object as the answer, so a cycle under a z.any() field no longer
overflows the stack under 'warn', 'keep' or 'fail'.
- 'keep' refuses an answer with InvalidOutputError when a key cannot be put
back because the schema coerced the object holding it to a primitive.
- The summary description renders root properties together with the union
options when a schema has both.
Outside-diff finding on tool.utils.ts ('keep' and coerced objects): valid, fixed in cef25c8. Under 'keep', a key that can't be put back, because the schema replaced the object holding it with a primitive (z.coerce.string() given { payload: { secret: 'x' } }), now refuses the answer with InvalidOutputError naming those keys (payload.secret), the same way 'fail' does. Before, the key was lost silently.
The check compares the answer with the merged result: findDroppedKeys(value, withUndeclaredKeys(value, declared)). So it names only the keys that really couldn't be kept, not every undeclared key, and hasTransform is unchanged. Test in tool-instance.output-schema.spec.ts. The catalog's undeclaredKeys table (create-tool/references/output-schema.md) describes the new behaviour.

Review comments at @libs/skills/catalog/create-tool/references/output-schema.md:
- Line 190: Update the UI and transform descriptions to reflect the parsed
output behavior: the `'strip'` policy follows the schema’s unknown-key handling,
so `z.looseObject()` may retain undeclared keys, and transformed output is used
as-is and may retain them too. Leave the strict-schema statement unchanged.

…tput, not declared keys only
The UI path and a schema with a transform are parsed with 'strip', and the
answer is what the schema returns, so a z.looseObject() keeps its undeclared
keys there too.
On the outside-diff note about the PR description (output-schema.md:146): no change needed. The description has a filled ## User-facing change section. It covers output.undeclaredKeys ('strip' | 'warn' | 'keep' | 'fail', with the default 'warn' under NODE_ENV=development and 'strip' otherwise), the union listing, the frontmcp.dev pages affected and the catalog entries updated. A ### Review fixes list under it records the behaviour changes from review.

What and why
Proposal items 1.5 and 1.6: a tool's output schema was handled silently in two ways.
1.5: a union output schema was never listed.
tools/listkept an output schema only when its JSON Schema had atop-level
type: 'object'. With zod 4,z.union([...])serializes to a bareanyOfandz.discriminatedUnion(...)toa bare
oneOf, so both were dropped. The drop was silent:getRawOutputSchema()returnedundefined, so even theexisting "outputSchema without type: 'object'" warning in
tools/listnever fired. On top of that, outputSchema: z.union([...])did not compile: zod 4'sz.unioninfers areadonlyoptions tuple, and the@Tooltypes declared amutable one, so users had to cast.
anyOf/oneOf, nested unions included) whose members are all object schemas is now listed as{ type: 'object', anyOf | oneOf: [...] }, the shape the elicitation fallback already advertises. A member registered with anid (
.meta({ id })) serializes to a$refinto$defs; the check follows those references, so such a union, and anobject registered with an id, is listed too. A union that refers back to itself is left out, because a validator can
follow that reference forever.
oneOf[0],$defsincluded, soits
#/$defs/...references no longer resolved from the document root and the MCP client failedtools/list(
can't resolve reference). The wrapper now keeps$defsat the root.@ToolandToolMetadataoutput types acceptreadonlyunion tuples, soz.union([...])andz.discriminatedUnion(...)need no cast.schema with no JSON Schema form such as a
z.date()field) now logs one warning at startup, naming the tool and thereason. A tool whose
output.schemaModeresolves to'none'asked for no schema and stays quiet. The check runs oncein the scope after its tools are registered, so it sees the tool's app and the server's policy. Primitive outputs
(
'string',z.number(),z.date(), …), media literals and multi-content arrays are still never listed, by design, and stay quiet.
skill:/// skills HTTP pages and the CodeCall plugin read the samegetOutputJsonSchema()/getRawOutputSchema(),so they now show union output schemas too.
1.6: undeclared keys were stripped silently.
tools/callparsed the answer with zod's default strip, so a key thetool returned but never declared simply vanished, with no way to notice it or to opt out. Stripping is load-bearing for
security on the UI path (
declaredOutput, #645), so that path keeps stripping whatever the policy.output.undeclaredKeys: 'strip' | 'warn' | 'keep' | 'fail', declarable on@FrontMcp,@Appand@Tool(Tool > App > server cascade, like
schemaMode), validated by the sharedoutputPolicySchema, so an unknown valuefails at boot.
tools/listandtools/callread the cascade through one lookup, toolOutputPolicies(tool, scope), which findsthe app through the tool's lineage. A tool that a plugin or an adapter of an app contributes now follows that app's
output(schemaMode, schemaDescriptionFormatandundeclaredKeys). Before, both flows matched the tool'sdirect owner only, so the app's policy skipped those tools.
'strip'drops undeclared keys (the old behaviour).'warn'drops them and logs a warning naming each key path once per tool (costCenter, lines[].margin). A toolnames at most 100 key paths, so answers keyed by ids cannot grow the record without bound.
'keep'sends them instructuredContentand the text content.tools/listthen lists that tool's schema withoutadditionalProperties: false, at every level, so MCP clients that validatestructuredContentagainst the listedschema (the MCP TypeScript client does) accept the answer.
'fail'refuses the answer withInvalidOutputError(_meta.code: 'INVALID_OUTPUT'); the internal message namesthe keys, and the public message stays generic.
'warn'whenNODE_ENV=development,'strip'otherwise (detected withisDevelopment()from@frontmcp/utils, as the rest of the SDK does).'keep', the finalize stageparses with
'strip'when a UI result was built. Without this, a client that takes nostructuredContent(platform typeclaude)would have received the undeclared keys through the parsed
structuredContent.transform anywhere (
.transform(),z.preprocess(),.pipe(), a codec) can rename or drop keys, so that comparisonmeans nothing for it: such a schema is always stripped, and
'warn','keep'and'fail'do not apply. Withoutthis,
'keep'would put back a key a transform deliberately dropped.@frontmcp/lazy-zodgainshasTransform(schema)for the check. These schemas are not listed in
tools/listeither (zod cannot express a transform in JSON Schema),and now log the startup warning.
outputSchema. A JSON Schema output (the OpenAPI adapter, a remote app) isnot parsed, so its answer is sent as the upstream returned it, as before.
z.unionkeeps the first member that matches, so a key that only a later member declares is stripped, and'warn'and
'fail'report it. The catalog says to put the widest member first, or to usez.discriminatedUnion.buildParsedToolResult→parseSingleValue→parseAgainstOutputSchemaandToolEntry.parseOutput / safeParseOutput(raw, options?). Callers that pass no options (the UI path, the cacheplugin) keep the strip behaviour.
@frontmcp/utilsgainsfindDroppedKeys(original, parsed), which the SDK and the new matcher share.@frontmcp/testinggainsexpect(answer).toPassOutputSchemaWhole(outputSchema): the answer matches the schema (aZod schema or a raw shape) and has no undeclared key; the failure names the keys.
McpMatchersis now the union ofMcpResultMatchersandMcpUiMatchers(same members), so the Jest augmentations extend two interfaces and need noeslint-disableforno-empty-object-type, which the pre-commit hook used to strip.User-facing change
