fix(linstor-migrate): skip a definition whose replicas disagree on the stack - #223
linstor-migrate warned and converted anyway when a definition's replicas disagree on the layer stack:
A definition with no stack of its own whose replicas were built two ways was converted with the stack unset, marked Initialized, and the controller then pinned the default stack over every replica, LUKS ones included.
A replica built otherwise than the stack its definition names was converted all the same.
Under a definition with no stack of its own, a diskful replica the dump showed no layer chain for was taken as agreeing with the rest, so a definition with no chains at all converted with the stack unset and without a warning.
Either way the satellite would bring a replica up under a stack it was not built with, writing DRBD metadata over a LUKS volume's ciphertext for one. An operator who missed the warning lost the data.
Such a definition is now skipped with its replicas, and the report names the disagreement and says to settle the stack in LINSTOR and convert again. The migration doc lists it among what is not migrated.
Testing
TestADefinitionWhoseReplicasDisagreeOnTheStackIsNotConverted covers every shape, two stacks, layers in another order, a stack the row names, no chain at all and one chain missing: no definition and no replica is converted, and the report names the disagreement. Disabling the check turns both subtests red.
go test ./pkg/linstormigrate: green. golangci-lint 2.11.4 (the CI pin) over the whole tree: clean.

Bug Fixes
Conversion now skips resource definitions and their replicas when their declared layer stack conflicts with the replicas’ stacks, or when replicas use different stacks and no stack is declared. Warnings identify the skipped definitions and the mismatch.
Compatible definitions without a declared stack continue to use the stack shared by their replicas.
Documentation
The migration guide explains which stack mismatches cause resources to be skipped and advises resolving them in LINSTOR before rerunning conversion.
The LINSTOR migration converter now skips resource definitions and their replicas when declared and on-disk layer stacks disagree. It reports the mismatch and directs operators to resolve the stack in LINSTOR before converting again.

Layer-stack validation and conversion pkg/linstormigrate/convert.go, pkg/linstormigrate/layer_stack_test.go, pkg/linstormigrate/convert_test.go, docs/linstor-migration.md
The converter rejects definitions when replicas use conflicting stacks or a replica differs from the declared stack. Tests verify that the definition and its replicas are omitted. The migration guide describes the limitation. List parsing now uses a shared helper to recognize empty values.
Add resource rows to the disagreement fixture so the replica assertion can fail.
stackDump sets LayerResourceIDs but leaves dump.Resources empty. convertResources therefore has no rows to process, and the len(res.Resources) != 0 check at line 188 holds whether or not its guards work. With one replica row per node, removing only the convertedRD guard in convertResources lets both replicas reach buildResource, and the assertion fails. With the guard in place, the rows are still skipped, so the test passes.

Update the disagreement fixture around `Convert` and `stackDump` to include one
`ResourceRow` for each node, using the matching resource name and distinct
UUIDs. This ensures `convertResources` processes both replicas and the existing
assertion detects removal of the `convertedRD` guard.

Andrei Kvapil (@kvaps) NOT LGTM. The skip catches every disagreement the dump shows, but a definition whose diskful replicas show no stack at all still converts with the stack unset, and without a warning.
Business context: linstor-migrate converted a definition whose replicas disagree on the layer stack with only a warning; this PR refuses such a definition and its replicas instead.
Blocker: a stack the converter cannot read is taken as agreement. In stackDisagreement, a row with no stack and no layer chain for the definition returns "", and rdLayerStack then returns nil. I ran Convert on stackDump("[]") with two diskful ResourceRows and no LAYER_RESOURCE_IDS rows. pvc-s converts with LayerStack unset and Initialized=true, both replicas are emitted, and the report says nothing about pvc-s. With one replica's chain present (DRBD,LUKS,STORAGE) and the other's missing, it converts under the LUKS stack for both, also silently.
This is the shape the PR body calls data loss ("converted with the stack unset, marked Initialized"), minus even the warning. The documented dump command takes every CRD, so it needs an incomplete dump or a replica without layer rows. LoadDump does not catch the first case: loadTable returns no error when layerresourceids is missing, so every definition with an empty layer_stack column takes this path. I'd count the live diskful replicas whose chain is absent (the same filter indexDiskStacks uses: no snapshot, not diskless) and refuse the definition when there is one. A subtest for each of the two dumps above would pin it.
Non-blocking:
No test pins layer order. I swapped the exact string compare for a sorted, order-insensitive one and the whole package stayed green. DRBD,LUKS,STORAGE against LUKS,DRBD,STORAGE is refused today; a subtest would keep it that way.
The replica check in TestADefinitionWhoseReplicasDisagreeOnTheStackIsNotConverted cannot fail. stackDump adds no Resources, so len(res.Resources) == 0 holds with no guard at all. With the convertedRD guard in convertResources removed, this test stays green. Other tests go red, so the behaviour itself is covered, but the PR body says this test covers "no replica is converted". Two ResourceRows in the fixture fix that.
In the warning, "DRBD metadata written over a LUKS volume's ciphertext say;" reads like a typo.
#222 rewrites the LUKS bullet in docs/linstor-migration.md directly above the new bullet, and the two branches conflict textually there. The migration page in #205 lists what is not converted and which warnings to resolve before cutover; once this lands, the new skip belongs in both lists.
Mutations I ran on the head (base is current main, so the head is the trial merge): warn without skipping turns both subtests red, as the PR says. Relaxing > 1 to > 2 reddens the two-ways subtest, and dropping the named-stack check reddens the other. go test ./pkg/linstormigrate is green on the head.
…e stack
A definition with no stack of its own whose replicas were built two
ways was converted with the stack unset, and the controller then
pinned the default stack over every replica, LUKS ones included; a
replica built otherwise than the stack its definition names was
converted all the same. Either way the satellite would bring a replica
up under a stack it was not built with, DRBD metadata written over a
LUKS volume's ciphertext for one, and the operator got a warning only.
Such a definition is now skipped with its replicas and the report
names the disagreement.

…show
Under a definition with no stack of its own, a diskful replica the
dump carries no layer chain for was taken as agreeing with the rest,
so a definition whose replicas showed no chain at all converted with
the stack unset and no warning, and one with a single chain converted
under that stack for every replica. Such a definition is now refused
with its replicas too. The tests cover every refused shape, layer
order included, against replicas that would otherwise convert.

Blocker: under a definition with no stack of its own, a live diskful replica (no snapshot, not diskless, the indexDiskStacks filter) that the dump shows no layer chain for now refuses the definition with its replicas, and the report names the node. Both of your dumps are subtests, no chain at all and one chain missing. Where the row names a stack I kept trusting it, since LINSTOR built the replicas under that stack, and a missing chain there says nothing new.
Non-blocking: a subtest pins the layer order (DRBD,LUKS,STORAGE against LUKS,DRBD,STORAGE), and an order-insensitive compare turns it red. The fixture now has two ResourceRows, so with the convertedRD guard in convertResources removed every subtest goes red. The warning wording is fixed. I'll add the skip to the #205 migration page and sort out the #222 text conflict on whichever lands second.

Andrei Kvapil (@kvaps) LGTM. A definition with no stack of its own is now refused with its replicas when a live diskful replica has no layer chain in the dump, so the fail-open from my last review is closed.
Missing chain taken as agreement (blocker): fixed. unchainedReplica uses the same filter as indexDiskStacks, and turning the check off reddens "no chain at all" and "one chain missing". A dump without layerresourceids.json now gets every such definition refused instead of converted with the stack unset.
Layer order: fixed. Keying the on-disk stacks order-insensitively reddens "layers in another order".
The replica check that could not fail: fixed. With the convertedRD guard in convertResources removed, all five subtests go red.
The typo in the warning: fixed.
Other mutations also go red: dropping the diskless filter in unchainedReplica, applying the missing-chain check to a definition that names its stack, never marking a replica as chained. The TestBothLatchReasonsAreReported fixture change is correct, since its only chain is STORAGE and a row naming DRBD,STORAGE is now refused. go test ./pkg/linstormigrate and go vet are green on the head, which already sits on current main. CI on the head is green.
Non-blocking:
A malformed layer_stack is reported as "no layer stack of its own". stackDisagreement drops the parse error, and its comment says rdLayerStack reports it. A refused definition never reaches rdLayerStack, though. With ["DRBD", as the row's stack and one chain missing, the only warning is the missing-chain refusal and the parse failure is never reported. The refusal is right, only the reason is wrong.
Nothing pins the snapshot filter in unchainedReplica. Dropping res.SnapshotName != "" keeps the package green. Without it, a snapshot row on a node with no live replica would refuse a definition whose replicas all have chains.
The docs overlap is still there. #222 conflicts with this branch in docs/linstor-migration.md, on the LUKS bullet right above the new one. In #205, lines 82 and 83 of site/content/en/docs/migration.md still list the two warnings this PR removes. Line 85 there says an agreeing definition with no stack takes its replicas' stack, and after this PR that also needs a chain for every diskful replica.
The PR body says disabling the check turns "both subtests" red. There are five now.
