fix(linstor-migrate): refuse replicas with external DRBD metadata - #227
linstor-migrate adopted a replica with external DRBD metadata as if its metadata were internal. LINSTOR builds such a replica with a .meta STORAGE child under its DRBD layer, and the converter just dropped that child. The definition came out with initialized set and no warning, so the satellite would bring the replica up, find no metadata on the data device and run create-md over the end of the data.
Now a definition is skipped with all its replicas in two cases:
A replica has a .meta layer child, or a meta pool on one of its DRBD volumes (LAYER_DRBD_VOLUMES.POOL_NAME, which the dump model now reads). The warning names the replica and says its metadata is on a separate volume.
A replica the dump has no layer chain for, while StorPoolNameDrbdMeta names a pool in any of the six scopes LINSTOR takes it from: volume definition, volume group, replica, definition, resource group, node. Each volume is resolved on its own, and .internal is read trimmed and in any case, as LINSTOR does. Without the chain the property is the only evidence, so the warning says to check the replica in LINSTOR first.
When every chain has no .meta child and the property is set somewhere, the metadata is internal: LINSTOR applies the property only to replicas created after it is set, and .internal asks for internal metadata. That definition converts. The property is left off the converted definition and its replicas, the only two scopes the dispatcher reads it from, so the satellite does not look for a metadata volume. On a node, group, volume group or volume definition it converts as before, onto objects nothing reads it from. The warning says the metadata stays on the data device.
Refusing, not mapping. blockstor's satellite renders an external meta-disk as /dev/<pool>/<rd>_<vol>_meta and does not provision that volume (storage-external-drbd-meta.sh marks it as not wired). LINSTOR names its metadata volume differently, so there is nothing to adopt the existing one through. Changing the property in LINSTOR does not move existing metadata either, so for real external metadata the docs say to copy the data to a volume with internal metadata and convert that one.
TestSnapshotAndSuffixedLayersDoNotShapeTheStack used .meta as its example of a suffixed child; it uses a cache child now, since a .meta child refuses the definition.
docs/linstor-migration.md touches the same list as #226, so whichever lands second needs a rebase.
Diskless replicas, replicas marked DELETE, snapshot rows and definitions without a DRBD layer do not decide either way.
Testing: go test ./pkg/linstormigrate/... ./cmd/... ./pkg/dispatcher/..., golangci-lint clean, the site builds. Each detector, each of the six scopes, the per-volume resolution, the .internal reading, the dropped property and every row filter turn a test red when broken.

Bug Fixes
Migration skips resource definitions with replicas that use external DRBD metadata, and reports guidance for resolving the LINSTOR configuration before retrying. Other definitions continue converting.
Definitions with internal metadata can still convert when a metadata-pool property is set; the property is omitted from the generated manifests, and the report identifies its original scope.

Walkthrough
The LINSTOR migration converter checks for external DRBD metadata and resolves metadata-pool properties across LINSTOR scopes. It skips affected resource definitions and omits tracked metadata-pool properties from converted definitions and replicas. Tests and migration guides cover these rules.
The model includes optional node and pool fields for DRBD volume metadata. The property index adds volume-group lookup. The converter resolves StorPoolNameDrbdMeta per volume across LINSTOR scopes and classifies external pools.
The converter checks replica layer and pool evidence. It skips definitions with external metadata in the covered cases. When metadata remains on the data device, it omits the metadata-pool property from converted definitions and replicas.
Validate and document metadata rules pkg/linstormigrate/external_metadata_test.go, pkg/linstormigrate/layer_stack_test.go, docs/linstor-migration.md, site/content/en/docs/migration.md
Tests cover metadata evidence, scope resolution, non-converting rows, and definition isolation. Migration guidance describes the skip conditions and property handling.
The change conservatively refuses external metadata, but deleted-volume properties can also block otherwise eligible definitions. The guide may prompt unnecessary data copying, and repeated scans add conversion work. These are bounded concerns suitable for targeted fixes or explicit owner acceptance.

Andrei Kvapil (@kvaps) Requesting changes for two gaps in externalMetadataReason, both inline. The .meta check is the right signal, and the skip leaves nothing behind: replicas and snapshots both drop on convertedRD. Every detector goes red when I break it.
The first gap is fail-open. When a replica has no layer chain in the dump, the property fallback reads only two of the six scopes LINSTOR takes the meta pool from, so external metadata set on the group, the node or the volume definition is missed.
The second one goes the other way. When the chain is in the dump and has no .meta child, the metadata is internal, but the warning says it is on a separate volume and tells the operator to copy the data.
Smaller things:
No test has a second definition. If I drop row.ResourceName == rdName from the .meta loop, or res.ResourceName != rdName from the replica loop, the package stays green. With that bug one external-metadata replica would skip every definition in the dump. A neighbour definition that still converts would pin it.
The PR body says the warning names the replica. For the property on the definition it names the pool, not a replica.
docs/linstor-migration.md conflicts with #226, both add a bullet to the same list. Whichever lands second needs a rebase.
go test ./pkg/linstormigrate/... ./cmd/... is green on the head, which sits on current main. In CI lint, unit and contract tests are green. Integration was still running and e2e was queued when I looked.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
This is fail-open for a replica the dump has no layer chain for. LINSTOR takes the meta pool from six scopes, most specific first: volume definition, volume group, resource, definition, resource group, node (see getExtMetaDataStorPoolName and needsMetaData in RscDrbdLayerHelper.java). With a chain in the dump, the .meta row covers all of them. Without one, only the definition and the replica are checked here. #223 lets an unchained replica through on purpose when the definition names its own stack.
I tried it. The definition has layer_stack["DRBD","STORAGE"], there are no LAYER_RESOURCE_IDS rows, and StorPoolNameDrbdMeta=meta is set on /RSC_GRPS/RG. One definition and two replicas came out, with no warning at all. Same with the property on /NODES/NODE-A and on /VLM_DFNS/PVC-S/0. loadTable takes a missing table file as empty, so a dump without the layer table hits this for every definition that has a stack.
I'd resolve the property through all six scopes for every live diskful replica that c.chained does not have, and refuse when it names a pool. There is also a second signal that does not depend on props. LAYER_DRBD_VOLUMES stores the meta pool per volume in NODE_NAME and POOL_NAME, and LayerDrbdVolumeRow drops both columns.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in c558335. For every live diskful replica the dump has no chain for, the converter resolves StorPoolNameDrbdMeta through all six scopes, volume definition, volume group, replica, definition, resource group, node, and refuses when it names a pool other than .internal. LayerDrbdVolumeRow now reads node_name and pool_name, and a pool there counts as external metadata like the .meta child. Your three repros (RG, node, VD) are subtests now, one per scope.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The property alone does not mean the metadata is external. LINSTOR expects StorPoolNameDrbdMeta to be set on a definition or group after some replicas already exist, and those keep internal metadata (the comment on databaseLoadingFinished in AbsRscLayerHelper.java). When it loads its database it decides from the .meta child alone. .internal is also a valid value and means internal (isExternalMetaDataPool).
With both replicas chained as DRBD, STORAGE and no .meta row, .internal on the definition gives this warning: "StorPoolNameDrbdMeta .internal puts its DRBD metadata on a separate volume ... copy its data to a volume with internal metadata in LINSTOR and convert that one". A real pool name gives the same text. In both cases the data already has internal metadata, so the copy is not needed.
Skipping still makes sense to me: resolveMetaPool in the dispatcher would read the property and render a meta-disk path that does not exist. But the reason and the fix should say what is true here: no replica keeps its metadata outside, so remove the property in LINSTOR and convert again. Dropping the property from the converted definition would work too. The per-replica branch below has the same problem.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Right. Kept the skip, since the dispatcher would render a meta disk that is not there, but when the chains have no .meta child the warning now says the replicas keep their metadata on the data device and the fix is removing the property in LINSTOR. .internal takes the same path. "Copy the data" is left only for a real .meta child or a meta pool on a DRBD volume.
Thanks, head c558335, still one commit. Both gaps are answered inline.
Smaller points: TestExternalMetadataSkipsOnlyItsOwnDefinition adds a neighbour definition, and dropping either rdName filter turns it red. The body now says what each warning names: the replica for a .meta child or a DRBD volume pool, the scope for the property. The #226 conflict in docs/linstor-migration.md I'll resolve on whichever lands second.
Report external metadata on any volume, not only the first.
drbdMetaPool returns the first volume's pool. With .internal on volume 0 and an external pool on a later volume, the warning omits the external pool and says metadata stays on the data device. Prefer a non-internal pool from any volume, then add a test for differing per-volume values.

Review comment at @pkg/linstormigrate/convert.go around lines 1270 - 1310:
Update drbdMetaPool to scan all matching volume definitions before returning a
volume-level pool, preferring any non-internal pool over an internal pool
regardless of volume order. Preserve the existing fallback precedence for
resource and node properties, and add a test covering different per-volume pool
values where an external pool appears after an internal one.

Andrei Kvapil (@kvaps) The fail-open from my last review is fixed, but the change to the internal-metadata branch now skips definitions that convert and run fine on main, so I'm still requesting changes. Details inline.
The six-scope walk matches LINSTOR. drbdMetaPool reads the same scopes in the same order as getExtMetaDataStorPoolName in RscDrbdLayerHelper.java, and LAYER_DRBD_VOLUMES.POOL_NAME is read too. I broke each scope, the .meta check, the volume pool check, the rdName filters, the DELETE filter and the DRBD gate one at a time, and each one turns a test red. pool_name also loads from the CRD JSON shape, null included.
Smaller things, none blocking:
The .internal check is stricter than LINSTOR's. LINSTOR trims the value and ignores case (isExternalMetaDataPool), so .INTERNAL on a replica without a chain gets "would put its DRBD metadata on a separate volume" here. LINSTOR also resolves each volume on its own, while drbdMetaPool returns at the first volume with a value. With two volumes, .internal on volume definition 0 and meta on the definition, a replica without a chain is reported as keeping its metadata on the data device, though LINSTOR puts volume 1's metadata on meta. Both are still skipped, so only the text is wrong.
Some filters are not pinned. Removing the diskless filter in the property loop, either SnapshotName filter, or pool != drbdMetaInternal on the unchained branch keeps the package green. Same for the pool_name tag: the volume pool test builds the struct directly.
A .meta child on a replica marked DELETE still skips the definition. The property check skips DELETE rows since this head, the layer check does not.
runsDRBD parses row.LayerStack the same way rowLayerStack in #226 does. Whichever lands second could reuse it.
go test ./pkg/linstormigrate/... ./cmd/... is green on the head merged with current main, and with #226 merged in as well. The only conflict with #226 is still docs/linstor-migration.md. In CI, Integration tests is red on TestGroupJ/CSICreateVolumeFromEmpty and TestGroupKWFPoolDestroyedDropsFromPlacer. tests/integration does not import pkg/linstormigrate, so this diff can't cause that. Lint, unit, contract tests and all e2e lanes are green.

This skips definitions for a property blockstor never reads. The dispatcher's resolveMetaPool (pkg/dispatcher/dispatcher.go:948) looks only at the replica's props and the definition's props, and it is the only place that sets MetaPool. The converter puts node, resource group and volume definition props on their own objects (convert.go:588, :763, :1592), so a value from those scopes never reaches it. Row 77 of docs/cli-parity-known-deltas.md says the same.
I tried it. Both replicas are chained as DRBD, STORAGE, there is no .meta, and StorPoolNameDrbdMeta=meta is set on /NODES/NODE-A. The definition and its replicas are skipped with "blockstor reads the property and would look for a separate metadata volume that does not exist". On main the same dump converts with no warning and no meta pool on the replica or the definition, so the replicas come up with internal metadata, which is where it is. The resource group, volume group and volume definition scopes behave the same. A group or node property is the usual way to send new volumes to a meta pool, so on such a cluster every older definition in that group or on that node stops converting, and the operator is told to change LINSTOR for nothing.
For a replica without a chain the six-scope walk is right, since the property stands in for the missing chain. For chained replicas without .meta, only the replica and definition scopes reach the dispatcher. Narrowing the skip to those, or dropping the property from the converted definition and replica, fixes it. The "blockstor would still read it" sentence is also in the commit message, the PR body, both docs pages and the function comment. TestAMetaPoolOverInternalMetadataIsReportedAsIt/pool_on_the_resource_group pins the current behaviour.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Right, the dispatcher only reads the replica and the definition. In 555dd8b chained replicas without .meta no longer skip anything: the definition converts, StorPoolNameDrbdMeta is left off the converted definition and its replicas, and the other scopes convert onto their own objects as on main. The warning says the metadata stays on the data device and names the scope. TestAMetaPoolOverInternalMetadataConvertsWithoutIt covers all six scopes plus .internal and checks the property is gone from both objects. The "would still read it" wording is gone from the comment, the commit, the body and both docs pages.
Head 555dd8b, still one commit. The smaller points:
.internal is read trimmed and in any case, isExternalMetaPool.
The meta pool is resolved per volume. .internal on volume definition 0 with meta on the definition now refuses a replica without a chain, naming meta on the definition.
Pinned: the diskless filter, all three snapshot filters (property loop, volume definitions, layer rows), .internal on the unchained branch, and the pool_name tag through LoadDump with a null row. Each one goes red when broken.
A .meta child on a replica marked DELETE no longer skips the definition.

Full-table scans in the external-metadata helpers repeat per definition and per replica.

Full-table scans in the external-metadata helpers repeat per definition and per replica.
externalMetadataReplica scans Resources, LayerResourceIDs, and LayerDrbdVolumes on each call. externalMetadataReason calls it for each definition. drbdMetaPools scans all VolumeDefinitions once per replica. Conversion work therefore grows with the product of the dump's table sizes. The base already scans whole tables in several places, so the added cost is a multiplier on existing scans, not a new class of cost.
Build the resource-keyed lookups once in buildIndexes, then reuse them in these helpers. Skip the index if dump sizes stay small.

Skip volume definitions marked DELETE in drbdMetaPools.
drbdMetaPools reads StorPoolNameDrbdMeta from every volume definition of the resource, including those marked DELETE. A DELETE-marked volume that sets this property can make an unchained replica look external, so the whole definition and its replicas are refused. Those volumes are never converted, so their property cannot affect the live volumes.

A LINSTOR replica whose DRBD metadata lives on a separate volume is
built with a ".meta" STORAGE child under its DRBD layer, and each of
its DRBD volumes records the meta pool. The converter dropped that
child and adopted the replica as if its metadata were internal, so the
satellite brought it up with create-md on the tail of the data device.
blockstor cannot adopt that layout: the satellite looks for a metadata
volume under its own name and does not provision one. Skip such a
definition with its replicas and say which replica keeps its metadata
outside. A replica the dump has no layer chain for is judged by
StorPoolNameDrbdMeta, resolved per volume through every scope LINSTOR
reads it from: volume definition, volume group, replica, definition,
resource group and node. ".internal" is read trimmed and in any case,
as LINSTOR reads it.
The property over chains without a ".meta" child does not mean
external metadata: LINSTOR applies it only to replicas created after it
is set, and ".internal" asks for internal metadata. Such a definition
converts. The property is left off the converted definition and its
replicas, the two scopes the dispatcher reads it from, and the report
says the metadata stays on the data device.
Rows that do not convert do not decide: a diskless replica, a replica
marked DELETE, a snapshot's rows, and a definition without a DRBD
layer.
