The LUKS master passphrase could also live in a property: DrbdOptions/EncryptPassphrase on the controller, the old DrbdOptions/Encryption/passphrase alias on a definition, or LuksPassphrase on a replica. A property sits in plaintext on its CR, and when one was set it won over the Secret, so any dump of the CRs for a backup carried the key to every LUKS volume. The operations docs say the key lives in the Secret only.

There are no users yet, so this drops the property path instead of migrating it.

  • The Secret written by encryption create-passphrase is the only source. The satellite drops every passphrase property before it adds the Secret's value, and the dispatcher reads that value alone. The LUKS checks on rd create, in REST and in the CLI, look at the Secret only.
  • REST refuses any write that would store such a key, on every props door and at any depth of the body, case-insensitively. The bundled CLI writes CRs itself and refuses the same set-property. Deleting such a property stays allowed.
  • vd modify-passphrase answers 400. blockstor has no per-volume keys, and the door stored the value in plaintext where nothing read it. Upstream's per-volume key is refused like the others.
  • encryption modify-passphrase answers 409 while any definition has LUKS. The cluster passphrase is the LUKS key itself and nothing runs cryptsetup luksChangeKey, so a rotation left every existing LUKS volume unable to open. That was already true before this PR.
  • Clone, spawn, snapshot and restore no longer copy a passphrase property from a group or a definition into what they create.
  • linstor-migrate leaves passphrase properties out of the YAML it generates, which is applied past the REST guard. Its LUKS warning pointed at spec.encryption, which nothing reads; it now says to add the cluster passphrase to each volume with cryptsetup luksAddKey.

Upgrading needs an operator step on a cluster whose LUKS volumes were formatted with a property's value, since before this a property won over the Secret. docs/layer-stack.md lists the cases and what to do in each, and the satellite logs the property keys it ignores on a LUKS definition.

The intentional divergences from upstream are rows 90 to 92 in docs/cli-parity-known-deltas.md.

Testing

  • The tests that asserted the property path works now assert it does not; the rest seed the Secret. New tests cover each REST door, bodies with trailing bytes, the CLI set-property, the satellite injection, the dispatcher, the vd door, the rotation guard and the migrate index. Reverting each guard fails its test.
  • An independent review found that bytes after the JSON value got past the REST guard; fixed, with a regression test.
  • go test ./... with envtest: green apart from the known pkg/rest shutdown flake.
  • go test -tags=integration ./tests/integration/...: green.
  • golangci-lint 2.11.4 (the CI pin) over the whole tree: clean.
  • The L6 cell cli-matrix/encryption-passphrase-luks-rd.sh and the L7 replays encryption-passphrase-luks-rd.yaml and luks-encrypted-rd.yaml are updated but not run: I had no stand.
[blockstor] The LUKS master passphrase is read only from the passphrase Secret. Properties that would hold it in plaintext are refused and ignored, per-volume passphrases are refused, and the cluster passphrase cannot be changed while LUKS volumes exist. LUKS volumes formatted while a passphrase property was set, alone or next to the Secret, open only once the Secret holds their key: follow the upgrade steps in docs/layer-stack.md before upgrading, then delete the properties.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Behavior Changes
    • LUKS volumes use the cluster passphrase stored in the configured Secret. Creating a LUKS resource is refused if the Secret is missing; legacy passphrase properties are no longer accepted.
    • Attempts to set passphrases through properties or change a per-volume passphrase are refused, while deleting passphrase properties remains allowed.
    • Cluster passphrase rotation is refused while any LUKS definition exists.
  • Documentation
    • Updated setup and migration guidance covers Secret-based passphrases, preparing existing volumes with the required key, and migration limitations.

Walkthrough

The PR makes the configured Secret the sole source for LUKS passphrases. It refuses plaintext passphrase-property writes and per-volume passphrase updates, blocks cluster passphrase rotation while a LUKS definition exists, and updates migration guidance and validation flows.

Changes: LUKS passphrase source and desired-state flow

Layer / File(s) Summary
Secret-only source and desired-state flow
pkg/passphrase/*, pkg/satellite/controllers/luks_passphrase.go, pkg/satellite/controllers/luks_passphrase_internal_test.go, pkg/dispatcher/dispatcher.go, pkg/dispatcher/dispatcher_luks_*_test.go, pkg/store/local_props.go, internal/cli/encryption.go, pkg/rest/resource_definitions.go, pkg/rest/luks_gate_bug023_test.go, pkg/rest/resource_definitions_bug*.go, pkg/rest/helpers_test.go
The CLI and REST require the configured Secret for LUKS resource-definition creation. The satellite removes recognized passphrase properties and uses the Secret value. The dispatcher removes plaintext properties from desired wire properties and DRBD options, then uses the canonical passphrase value for the wire property. Travelling properties also exclude passphrase keys.

Property and per-volume write refusals

Layer / File(s) Summary
Property and per-volume write refusals
internal/cli/write.go, internal/cli/passphrase_props_test.go, pkg/rest/passphrase_props_guard.go, pkg/rest/passphrase_props_guard_test.go, pkg/rest/server.go, pkg/rest/properties_info.go, pkg/rest/group_server_owned_props_test.go, pkg/rest/vd_passphrase_bug_233.go, pkg/rest/vd_passphrase_bug_233_test.go, pkg/rest/volume_definitions.go, tests/e2e/cli-matrix/encryption-passphrase-luks-rd.sh, tests/operator-harness/replay/*.yaml
The CLI and REST reject nonempty values for recognized passphrase-property keys. Empty values and deletion remain allowed. The per-volume passphrase endpoint returns HTTP 400 after checking that the resource and volume definitions exist.

Rotation refusal

Passphrase modification returns HTTP 409 when any resource definition uses LUKS. The REST test verifies the original passphrase remains accepted after a refused rotation.

Migration guidance and Secret-based test setup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Migration guidance and Secret-based test setup

Migration conversion excludes plaintext passphrase properties and reports the need to add the cluster passphrase as a LUKS key slot. Documentation and test setup now provision the passphrase through the configured Secret. End-to-end checks cover property, per-volume update, and rotation refusals.

Explanation

The title is conventional-commit style and names the main change: the LUKS master passphrase is now read only from the Secret. The changeset matches this. It removes the legacy controller property and plaintext passphrase properties, and it adds REST and CLI refusals plus satellite and dispatcher changes that use the Secret alone. The title omits the breaking-change scope in detail, but the ! marker signals it.

Andrei Kvapil (@kvaps) NOT LGTM — the code holds up, but nothing tells an operator how to upgrade a cluster whose LUKS volumes were formatted with a property passphrase, and the release note covers only one of the ways that could happen.

Business context: a LUKS master passphrase kept in a property sits in plaintext on its CR, so this PR makes the passphrase Secret the only source and refuses to store the key in any property.

I broke each guard once and every mutation fails a test: the satellite drop, the dispatcher drop and its maps.Clone, the REST middleware and its empty-value delete, the case-insensitive match, the CLI set-property, the migrate index, the rotation guard, the vd door and the CLI rd create gate. A wrong key does not turn into a reformat, because luks.Format probes isLuks first and the satellite fails on Open. Tests of the touched packages pass on the head and on a merge with #206, apart from the known pkg/rest 2s shutdown flake. The merge with #206 conflicts in pkg/linstormigrate/convert.go and docs/linstor-migration.md, both on the same LUKS warning text, so whichever PR lands second has to merge the two wordings.

Blocker: no upgrade step for volumes formatted with a property passphrase

Before this PR a property won over the Secret. The base luks_passphrase.go says "an operator-set controller prop (either spelling) wins over the Secret", and the base docs/layer-stack.md told operators to set DrbdOptions/Encryption/passphrase per definition and through rg sp encrypted-rg. The site text in #205 says the same for released versions. So a cluster can have LUKS volumes formatted with a property key in three ways:

  1. A controller property and no Secret.
  2. A property and a Secret with a different value.
  3. Per-definition aliases, each with its own value.

After this PR all three get the Secret's value, which TestBug023SecretReplacesEveryPassphraseProp pins. The release note says only "A passphrase set only in a property no longer unlocks LUKS volumes", and that sentence describes the first case.

The API has no way out of the second case. I checked it with a throwaway test in pkg/rest. With a Secret and a LUKS definition present, POST /v1/encryption/passphrase answers 409 "cluster passphrase already set; PUT to modify". A PUT to the property's value answers 409 "it is the key they were formatted with", which is not true on such a cluster. With no Secret, POST still answers 201 while a LUKS definition exists, so the first case has a path. An empty override_props value for DrbdOptions/EncryptPassphrase deletes the property (201).

What happens if it ships as is: on the next satellite restart or mapper close those volumes fail with Props.LuksPassphrase empty or a luks open error, and neither message names the property that was ignored. Nothing deletes the existing properties either, so the plaintext key this PR is about stays in every CR dump until someone removes it by hand.

The fix is text. Put the operator action into the release note and the docs, to be done before the upgrade:

  1. No Secret: run encryption create-passphrase with the property's exact value.
  2. A Secret with another value, or per-definition aliases: add the Secret's value to every LUKS device as a key slot with cryptsetup luksAddKey, or overwrite the Secret object with kubectl. The API refuses both create and modify there.
  3. Then delete the properties with set-property <key> "".

The release-note sentence also needs to cover a property that was set next to the Secret.

Non-blocking

pkg/satellite/controllers/luks_passphrase.go:70 drops a non-empty property silently. One log line or Warning Event naming the ignored key would make the failure above visible from the Resource.

pkg/rest/encryption.go:643 lists definitions and then writes the Secret, and nothing orders that against a concurrent LUKS rd create, whose own check only asks whether the Secret exists. A definition created and formatted inside that window keeps the old key. The window is narrow and rotation is rare, so I'm only noting it.

E2E lanes 1 to 6 are green on this head and the piraeus interop lane is still running. The L6/L7 cells were not run, as the PR body says.

Thanks, head a6ab601.

docs/layer-stack.md has an upgrade section now: how to find the properties on the CRs, what to do for each of the three cases (create-passphrase with the property's value, overwriting the Secret with kubectl when the property was there from the start, cryptsetup luksAddKey when the volumes use different keys), then deleting the properties. The release note and the PR body point at it and cover a property set next to the Secret.

The satellite now logs the property keys it drops on a LUKS definition, names only. The rotation race I left as is.

Andrei Kvapil (@kvaps) NOT LGTM. The new upgrade section has the right steps, but its search finds none of the group or definition properties set through the API, and it skips replicas. Also, four server-side copy paths still write a passphrase property into new CRs.

Points from my previous review

  1. Upgrade path for volumes formatted with a property passphrase: partly fixed. The release note, the PR body and the new section in docs/layer-stack.md cover the three cases and the cleanup. The search step does not work, see B1.
  2. Log naming the ignored key: fixed, key names only. The helper is pinned by a test, the log call is not: with the len(ignored) > 0 branch disabled, ./pkg/satellite/... stays green. The docs now send operators to this line, so a test that it fires would be good to have.
  3. Rotation racing a concurrent LUKS rd create: unchanged, as you said. Still non-blocking for me.

B1: the search in step 1 finds nothing on groups and definitions

The query reads only .spec.props, and the store never puts a DRBD option there. wireToCRDRDSpec and wireToCRDRGSpec store stripDRBDProps(in.Props) as Spec.Props, and propsToTyped sends an unknown DrbdOptions/* key to Spec.ExtraProps. The CLI set-property writes through the same store. I ran an RD and an RG carrying DrbdOptions/Encryption/passphrase through wireToCRDRD and wireToCRDRG. Both came out as {"extraProps":{"DrbdOptions/Encryption/passphrase":"..."}}, and the query from the docs printed nothing.

So an operator who follows the section gets an empty list and upgrades. Then the volumes formatted with a group or definition value fail to open, which is the failure the section exists to prevent.

Replicas are missing too. On the base, effectiveprops.Resolve merges the Resource scope last, so DrbdOptions/EncryptPassphrase on a replica beat the controller value. A LuksPassphrase in a replica's spec.props reached the wire when nothing else was set, and the PR body lists it as a source. Step 1 does not look at resources.blockstor.cozystack.io, and step 3 deletes nothing there. Step 3 also deletes only the canonical key on the controller, though the controller can hold the alias as well.

This query reads both maps, in any case, on all three kinds. I checked it against the same CR JSON:

kubectl get resourcegroups.blockstor.cozystack.io,resourcedefinitions.blockstor.cozystack.io,resources.blockstor.cozystack.io -o json \
  | jq -r '.items[] | select((.spec.props // {}) + (.spec.extraProps // {}) | keys | any(test("passphrase"; "i"))) | "\(.kind)/\(.metadata.name)"'

Then step 3 can say: delete every key step 1 found, on the object it was found on, with linstor resource set-property <node> <resource> <key> "" for replicas.

B2: clone, spawn, snapshot and restore copy the passphrase property

The PR body says REST refuses any write that would store such a key. The guard only checks request bodies, and four handlers copy properties on the server side: rd_clone.go:2128 (volume-less clone), spawn.go:248 (group props into each spawned definition), snapshots.go:954 and snapshot_restore.go:1349. All of them go through store.TravellingProps, which drops the restore markers and nothing else. A group that still has DrbdOptions/Encryption/passphrase after the upgrade puts the plaintext key into every definition spawned from it, and spawn is how linstor-csi creates volumes. The satellite ignores those copies, but the key lands in more CRs and more backups. With B1 in place, that is the likely state of an upgraded cluster.

All four paths share TravellingProps, so dropping the passphrase keys there with passphrase.DropPlaintextProps covers them. A test that spawns from a group with the alias and checks the new definition has no such key would pin it.

Not code

GitHub still shows this PR as conflicting, but git merge-tree against main at 1652387 is clean and gives exactly the head's tree. The base was switched from the #190 branch to main one second after the force-push, and both the mergeability and DCO look computed against the old base. DCO counted 18 commits, including the #190 squash on main, whose author address differs from its sign-off. All 17 commits here are signed off fine. Because of the conflict state no workflow ran on this head at all, and a fresh push should recompute both. "Stacked on #190" in the body is out of date now that #190 is merged.

The conflict with #206 is the same as before, the LUKS warning in pkg/linstormigrate/convert.go and docs/linstor-migration.md. The #206 side still says to provision spec.encryption, which this PR says nothing reads. Whichever lands second should keep this PR's wording and add the layer-stack sentence from #206.

Tests of the touched packages pass on the head, apart from the known 2s server-shutdown flake in pkg/rest. Every failure there is server did not stop within 2s after cancel.

Thanks, head 9261ab7.

  • B1: step 1 now uses your query, both maps on groups, definitions and replicas, plus the controller's extraProps. Step 3 deletes every key step 1 found on the object it was found on, with the resource set-property form for replicas and the controller alias as well.
  • B2: TravellingProps drops the passphrase keys, so clone, spawn, snapshot and restore copy none. TestSpawnDoesNotCopyAGroupPassphraseProp spawns from a group with the alias; disabling the drop turns it red.
  • The log line has a test too, TestBug023IgnoredPassphrasePropsAreLogged: it checks the line names the key and never carries the value.

"Stacked on #190" is gone from the body, and this push should recompute mergeability and run CI. On the #206 conflict I'll keep this PR's wording and add #206's layer-stack sentence.

Check the passphrase key before accepting an existing Secret.

When a Secret with the configured name exists but has no nonempty passphrase data key, this branch reports success. The passphrase reader treats that Secret as having no passphrase, so the E2E script proceeds to create a LUKS definition that the gate rejects. Validate the key before returning; fail with a clear setup error rather than replacing an existing Secret. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

 | 88 | `rg vg c` / `rg vg m` / `rg c` with volume-group `flags` | MISSING_FEATURE | permanent | Upstream's one volume-group flag is `GROSS_SIZE`, which sizes a spawned volume gross. Nothing in blockstor sizes a spawned volume gross, so both volume-group doors answer 501 to a body that sets a flag and write nothing, the props half included, rather than a 200 for a request that changes nothing. The volume-group create door and `rg c`, whose body can carry volume groups of its own, refuse any `flags`, so a flag no longer reaches the store; on main it was stored, listed by `rg vg l`, and did nothing. The modify door honours removals, spelled `-<FLAG>` as golinstor's `VolumeGroupModify` documents, since that is the only way to clear a flag a volume group created before this already carries; a body that mixes a removal with a set is refused whole. Pinned by `pkg/rest/vg_modify_golinstor_test.go`. |
 | 89 | `delete_namespaces` on every props-modify door | BEHAVIOR | permanent | Recorded so it is not reopened. As upstream's `PropsContainer.removeNamespace` does, a namespace removes the keys below it and leaves a key spelled exactly as the namespace: `DrbdOptions` takes `DrbdOptions/Net/protocol` and keeps `DrbdOptions`. Trailing slashes name the same namespace, however many there are. Against main this both widens and narrows the delete. Wider: a trailing-slash entry deleted nothing on most doors (the node-connection door trimmed one slash), and a multi-slash entry such as `Aux//` deleted nothing on any door; now both delete the keys below `Aux`. Narrower: the volume-definition, per-resource volume and node-connection doors deleted a key spelled exactly like the namespace, and now keep it. One spelling still differs from upstream: an entry of `/` alone, which upstream reads as the root namespace and so clears every prop, names nothing here and deletes nothing, the safe side of the difference. Every door and every guard in front of one read it through the same helper (`store.NamespaceCovers`), so a guard in front of a door refuses every spelling the delete honours. |

Upstream LINSTOR accepts the LUKS master passphrase as a controller property. blockstor keeps it only in the Secret `encryption create-passphrase` writes and never reads it from a property: a property sits in plaintext on its CR, so any dump of the CRs for a backup would carry the key to every LUKS volume. Any POST/PUT/PATCH whose JSON body stores one of those keys, matched without regard to case, answers 400 naming `encryption create-passphrase`, and nothing is stored; the bundled CLI's `set-property` refuses the same write. Deleting such a property (a `delete_props` entry, or an override to the empty string) stays allowed. BS re-synthesises `layer_data: [{"type":"DRBD"},{"type":"STORAGE"}]` from `Spec.LayerStack` on every RD read, so the python CLI's Layers column renders `DRBD,STORAGE` even for a fresh `parity-rd` with only a volume-definition; upstream 1.33.2 leaves the column blank until DRBD layer data is actually allocated. BLOCKSTOR_SUPERSET, operator-friendly, and linstor-csi / piraeus-operator do not gate on RD `layer_data`. Both exit 0. Deliberate: a CSI `DeleteSnapshot` / operator retry MUST be idempotent, so "already gone" is a success, not a warning. Mirrors the resource-delete idempotency in row 42. Target the configured passphrase Secret in the upgrade command.

If ControllerConfig spec.passphraseSecretRef.name is set, this command overwrites the default Secret instead. The satellite still reads the configured Secret, so volumes formatted with the controller property's value remain unable to open after the upgrade. Substitute the configured Secret name and controller namespace in this command. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Andrei Kvapil (@kvaps) The upgrade query in docs/layer-stack.md still misses two places where a plaintext passphrase sits on a cluster today, so an operator who follows the steps keeps the key in the CRs and in the next backup. The rest of my last review is fixed at f23d0dc.

First, per-volume keys. Before this PR, vd modify-passphrase wrote DrbdOptions/Encrypt/Passphrase into the volume's props. The store keeps those in spec.volumeDefinitions[].props of the definition CR (PatchVolumeDefinitionSpec). The jq reads only the top-level .spec.props and .spec.extraProps, so it prints nothing for such a definition. I ran it against a hand-made list to check. Step 3 also has no linstor volume-definition set-property <definition> <vlmNr> <key> "" line, though the REST guard lets that delete through.

Second, snapshots. Before this PR TravellingProps kept the alias, so a snapshot of a definition that carried it stored the value in the Snapshot CR's spec.props (wireToCRDSnapshotSpec). The query doesn't list snapshots.blockstor.cozystack.io, but the paragraph after step 3 says "step 1 finds those too". A snapshot has no set-property, so step 3 needs a kubectl patch for it, or says to delete the snapshot.

This finds all four cases on my test list:

kubectl get resourcegroups.blockstor.cozystack.io,resourcedefinitions.blockstor.cozystack.io,resources.blockstor.cozystack.io,snapshots.blockstor.cozystack.io -o json \
  | jq -r '.items[] | select([(.spec.props // {}), (.spec.extraProps // {}), (.spec.volumeDefinitions // [] | .[].props // {})] | add | keys | any(test("passphrase"; "i"))) | "\(.kind)/\(.metadata.name)"'

The rest checks out, and each fix fails its test when I revert it. Without the filter in TravellingProps, TestSpawnDoesNotCopyAGroupPassphraseProp goes red. Dropping the keys from the satellite log line fails TestBug023IgnoredPassphrasePropsAreLogged. Forcing the rotation guard onto the cache fails TestPassphraseModifyAsksTheAPIServerForLUKSVolumes. CI is green on this head. The rebase onto #206 kept both halves of the convert.go comment and of the migration doc sentence.

Not blocking: the CodeRabbit note on step 2 is right. passphraseSecretRef can point the satellite at another Secret, and the kubectl command always writes blockstor-cluster-passphrase in blockstor-system.

Thanks, head after this push. Step 1 now uses your query, so it reads the volume props and lists snapshots. Step 3 deletes a volume key with linstor volume-definition set-property <definition> <volume number> <key> "", and a snapshot's with a kubectl patch that removes the key, or says to delete the snapshot. Step 2 says to use the Secret name and namespace spec.passphraseSecretRef points at. I checked the query on a list with a per-volume key, a snapshot copy, a group extraProps key and a clean replica: it prints the first three.

The runbook instructs operators to run dmsetup table --showkeys <mapper> directly, which prints the volume key even though the procedure only needs to determine whether field 5 is hex or a keyring reference.

The LUKS volume key may be retained in a session recording or terminal log and exposed to someone who should not have it.

This can occur when: An operator follows this step in a terminal whose output is recorded or accessible to others.

Minor follow-up Serialize the LUKS definition check with the Secret write in rotatePassphrase.

671-682: Minor · Stability & Availability · Poor tradeoff

Serialize the LUKS definition check with the Secret write in rotatePassphrase.

rotatePassphrase calls refuseRotationOverLUKSVolumes and then writePassphrase. No lock or transaction covers both steps. A LUKS definition created after the check can be formatted with the old passphrase if the satellite reads the Secret before the write lands. The rotated Secret then cannot open that device.

The window runs from the list call to the Secret update. A slow API server or a stalled handler can widen it. Reading the list from the API server narrows the window but does not close it.

A process-local mutex covers only requests that this process handles. Closing the gap requires coordination across every writer that can create a LUKS definition or rotate the passphrase.

Andrei Kvapil (@kvaps) The volume-props and snapshot gaps from my last review are fixed at f911ff6. I ran the new query against a hand-made list. With the volume-props term removed it no longer finds the definition, so the term is needed. The snapshot kubectl patch also goes through, because the only CEL rule on Snapshot checks its name.

A spawn can still copy a group's passphrase property into the definition it creates, along two paths. So the PR body's "Clone, spawn, snapshot and restore no longer copy a passphrase property from a group or a definition" is not true yet, and neither is the same sentence after step 3.

  1. Per-volume props on the group. In spawn.go, rg.Props goes through TravellingProps, but each volume's props come from copyVolumeGroupProps, which is a plain maps.Copy of volumeGroups[].props. I seeded a group with DrbdOptions/Encrypt/Passphrase on volume group 0 and spawned through REST, and the new volume definition got the value. The step 1 query doesn't read spec.volumeGroups[].props either. So the key is never found, and after the upgrade every new spawn copies it again. Adding (.spec.volumeGroups // [] | .[].props // {}) to the array finds it. Step 3 then needs linstor volume-group set-property <group> <volume number> <key> "". The VG modify handler uses applyPropsModify, so the empty value deletes the key.

  2. Spawn in the bundled CLI. spawnDefinition in internal/cli/place.go does def.Props = maps.Clone(group.Props). A throwaway test that calls it on the in-memory store, with a group that has DrbdOptions/Encryption/passphrase, finds the key on the new definition. The REST spawn and the CLI's snapshot code already use store.TravellingProps, and the same call works here.

Each fix needs a test like TestSpawnDoesNotCopyAGroupPassphraseProp.

CI is green on this head. The PR merges cleanly into current main, and the touched packages pass there. #223 conflicts in docs/linstor-migration.md: it adds a bullet right after the LUKS bullet this PR rewrites, and keeping both bullets resolves it.

The passphrase could also live in a property: DrbdOptions/
EncryptPassphrase on the controller, the DrbdOptions/Encryption/
passphrase alias on a definition, or LuksPassphrase on a replica. A
property is stored in plaintext on its CR, and when one was set it won
over the Secret, so any dump of the CRs for a backup carried the key to
every LUKS volume while the docs said the key lived in the Secret.

The Secret written by encryption create-passphrase is now the only
source. The satellite drops every passphrase property before it adds
the Secret's value, the dispatcher reads that value alone and drops a
wire key that came with the replica, and the LUKS prerequisite checks
in REST and the CLI look at the Secret only. The REST API refuses any
write that would store such a property, on every door; deleting one
stays allowed.

BREAKING CHANGE: a passphrase set only in a property no longer unlocks
LUKS volumes. Move it into the passphrase Secret.

Assisted-by: LLM
Signed-off-by: Andrei Kvapil <kvapss@gmail.com>
The tests that asserted a passphrase property still unlocks LUKS now
assert the opposite: the controller prop does not satisfy the REST or
CLI prerequisite, the early per-RD alias never reaches the wire, and
the Secret replaces every passphrase property on the satellite.

Tests that only used the controller prop to satisfy the LUKS gate now
seed the passphrase Secret through a shared helper, and the refusal
checks expect a pointer at encryption create-passphrase with no
property named.

Assisted-by: LLM
Signed-off-by: Andrei Kvapil <kvapss@gmail.com>
The REST guard is pinned on the controller set-property, a definition
create with the early alias, a definition modify with the wire key and
a case variant: each answers 400 and stores nothing. A delete list
naming the key still passes, and a body that is not JSON reaches the
handler unchanged.

The satellite is pinned to yield no passphrase from a property alone,
and the dispatcher to never put a replica's wire key on the wire or
let it override the Secret's value.

Assisted-by: LLM
Signed-off-by: Andrei Kvapil <kvapss@gmail.com>
The CLI writes the CRs itself, so the REST guard never sees its
set-property. It stored the master passphrase in a plaintext property
that blockstor no longer reads, leaving the operator with a key in
every CR dump and a LUKS stack that still refuses to come up.

set-property now refuses any of the passphrase keys, in any case, on
every noun, and points at encryption create-passphrase. Setting one to
an empty value still deletes it.

Assisted-by: LLM
Signed-off-by: Andrei Kvapil <kvapss@gmail.com>
The guard refused any body that named a passphrase key as an object
key, so `set-property <key> ""`, the documented delete every props door
honours, answered 400. That blocked clearing a passphrase property put
there with kubectl through anything but an explicit delete list. An
override to the empty string stores nothing and now passes.

Assisted-by: LLM
Signed-off-by: Andrei Kvapil <kvapss@gmail.com>
The stand scenarios set the passphrase through the controller property
or put it in a definition's props, neither of which blockstor reads
any more, and REST now refuses the first. The cli-matrix cells rely on
encryption create-passphrase alone, and the kubectl-driven scenarios
create the passphrase Secret through a new lib helper that leaves an
existing one alone.

The Bug 023 cell and both LUKS replay workflows now assert that
setting the controller property is refused and stores nothing. The
cleanup helper reads the pinned Secret name from the right field.

Assisted-by: LLM
Signed-off-by: Andrei Kvapil <kvapss@gmail.com>
The layer-stack guide set the passphrase through a definition
property and described a per-definition key and a wrapping master key,
none of which matches the code. It now shows the Secret flow, states
that a passphrase property is refused and never read, and warns that
rotating the cluster passphrase leaves existing LUKS headers on the
old key.

The refused controller property is recorded as an intentional
divergence from upstream LINSTOR in the parity accept-list, and stale
code comments that still pointed at the property path are corrected.

Clone, spawn, snapshot and restore copy a definition's or a group's
properties through TravellingProps, which dropped only the restore
markers. A group that kept a passphrase property put the plaintext key
into every definition spawned from it. TravellingProps now drops the
passphrase keys too.

The upgrade search read only spec.props, and the store keeps a
DrbdOptions key in spec.extraProps, so it found nothing on groups and
definitions. It now reads both maps on groups, definitions and
replicas, and the cleanup deletes every key it found, the controller's
alias included.

…tation

The guard listed definitions from the cache, so one created a moment
ago could be missed and the rotation, which cannot be undone, let
through. It now lists them through the server's direct reader.

The migration runbook gains the step that gives each LUKS volume the
blockstor cluster passphrase while LINSTOR still has it open, reading
the volume key from the open mapping, and says what to do when the
key sits in the kernel keyring and cannot be read back.

The upgrade search missed the per-volume key vd modify-passphrase
wrote into a definition's volume props, and the alias a snapshot of
such a definition copied into its own props. It now reads both, the
cleanup deletes the volume key with vd set-property and the snapshot's
with a kubectl patch, and step 2 says to use the Secret name and
namespace the ControllerConfig points at.

…awns

A spawn filtered the group's own props but copied each volume group's
props verbatim onto the volume definition it created, and the bundled
CLI's spawn cloned the group's props whole. Either path put a
passphrase property left from before the Secret was the only source
onto every new definition. Both go through TravellingProps now.

A volume group keeps its props in spec.volumeGroups[].props of its
group, which the upgrade query did not read. Read it, and delete the
key there with volume-group set-property.

Thanks, head 71cc110, rebased on main with #223 (both migration bullets kept).

  1. copyVolumeGroupProps goes through store.TravellingProps now, pinned by TestSpawnDoesNotCopyAVolumeGroupPassphraseProp. The upgrade query reads spec.volumeGroups[].props too, and step 3 has linstor volume-group set-property <group> <volume number> <key> "". I checked that one on REST: the empty value goes through applyPropsModify and the key is gone.

  2. spawnDefinition in the CLI uses store.TravellingProps, pinned by TestResourceGroupSpawnDoesNotCopyAPassphraseProp.

Both tests go red with their fix reverted. No new cli-matrix cell for spawn: every props door refuses a passphrase key now, so the CLI can't put one on a group to begin with.

Andrei Kvapil (@kvaps) LGTM. Both spawn paths from my last review are fixed.

A spawn no longer copies a passphrase key from a volume group to the new volume. copyVolumeGroupProps returns store.TravellingProps now, and TestSpawnDoesNotCopyAVolumeGroupPassphraseProp goes red when I put maps.Clone back. A throwaway test with the keys in other casings, on the group and on its volume group, also left the spawned definition and volume clean. The step 1 query finds a group whose only passphrase key sits in spec.volumeGroups[].props. On the volume group door an empty value deletes the key, and a non-empty one is refused.

The bundled CLI spawn is fixed the same way. TestResourceGroupSpawnDoesNotCopyAPassphraseProp goes red with maps.Clone back.

I found no other place that copies props into a new object without the filter. I looked at clone, spawn, snapshot, restore, the CLI and linstor-migrate. A Snapshot CR keeps only the number and size of each volume, restore creates volumes without props, and the other maps.Copy/maps.Clone calls are reads, store deep copies or edits of the same object. So the sentence in the body about clone, spawn, snapshot and restore is true now.

The PR merges cleanly into current main, which has #200. On that merge the touched packages pass, apart from the known 2s server-shutdown flake in pkg/rest, and those tests pass on rerun. golangci-lint finds nothing new against main.

Integration tests are red on this head, and I don't think the diff causes it. The first attempt failed TestGroupKWFPoolDestroyedDropsFromPlacer, the second TestGroupFRAutoPlace2ReachesUpToDate and TestGroupI/ResourceConnectionPathCreate. The first two failed with the same messages on the main push of baa9e17, and the third on an unrelated branch. This PR doesn't touch the placer.

Sibling PRs will need small rebases: #226 conflicts in docs/linstor-migration.md, #218 in tests/e2e/cli-matrix/README.md. #192 touches pkg/rest/encryption.go and pkg/rest/vd_passphrase_bug_233.go too.
