test(e2e): the saas bundle source on Node, and a workflow finishes on the operations it started on - #1098
The saas bundle source was covered only by unit tests with a stubbed fetch. This PR runs it end to end on Node, as a production server uses it: a real server process with requireSignature, unprotectedOps: 'deny', MCP clients over streamable HTTP, and a mock SaaS bundle server over https. Everything is made at test start: the TLS certificate (trusted through NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS), the issuer's ES256 key and JWKS, the pull tokens, and the bundle signatures. No secret is committed.
What the new spec checks:
Startup pull. The server reads the JWKS without the pull token, then pulls the bundle with Authorization: Bearer <pull token>. search_skill, load_skill and run_workflow serve the bundle, /readyz reports its id and version, and the bundle is cached at <bundleCacheDir>/<expectedAudience>.json.
A new version, applied by polling. Skills and actions change together:
a removed skill is gone from search_skill and load_skill, and its actions answer "unknown action" in run_workflow;
an added skill appears with its actions;
connected clients get notifications/tools/list_changed, notifications/resources/list_changed and notifications/skills/list_changed;
/readyz and the cache follow the new version.
A bad new version is not applied. A version changed after it was signed, and one that fails the bundle schema, both leave the version before serving, and the log says why (digest mismatch, Bundle schema validation failed).
A workflow that runs while a new version is applied finishes on the operations of the version it started on (the fix below).
with a bundle cached by an earlier run, the server starts and serves it;
with no cache, it answers SKILL_BUNDLE_NOT_LOADED and /readyz 503, then serves the bundle from the first poll that succeeds.
A redirect from the bundle endpoint (302) is not followed: the redirect target gets no request, and the reason says so.
A cache directory the server can't write (as on a read-only serverless file system): the pulled bundle still serves, and the log says it couldn't be cached.
Fix: a running workflow keeps the operations it started on
run_workflow looked each action up in the live operation registry, so a bundle applied while a workflow ran switched it to the new version halfway through. An action the new version dropped answered unknown action "getAccountPlan", and an action the new version changed would run its new definition. The workflow now resolves its actions from a snapshot of the registry taken when it starts. The change adds HiddenOpRegistry.snapshot() and uses it in run_workflow. execute_action runs one action, so it is unaffected.
Found, not fixed here
A pulled bundle is cached before its signature is checked. A new version with a bad signature is refused, and the old version keeps serving. But the refused bundle replaces the last good one in the cache. If the server then restarts while the bundle server is down, it falls back to the refused bundle and serves nothing: No skill bundle is loaded: bundle e2e:billing@2.0.0 was not applied: digest mismatch. The fix is to cache a pulled bundle after it is applied, as #1094 already does for pushed bundles. That changes when a Worker's Cron refresh writes its KV cache, so it belongs in its own PR.
User-facing change
What changed: a run_workflow that is running when a new bundle is applied (by saas polling, a static file watch, or a push) finishes on the operations of the bundle it started on.
Before → after: before, its later callTool calls used the new bundle's operations, and an action the new bundle dropped failed with unknown action. After, the whole workflow runs on one bundle version.
frontmcp.dev pages affected (if known): the Skilled OpenAPI plugin page, where it describes how a new bundle replaces the old one.
Skills catalog entries updated:frontmcp-deployment/references/deploy-to-cloudflare-skills-only.md (the Cron hot swap). The plugin README says the same.
Tests
Added:
saas-source.e2e.spec.ts in demo-e2e-skilled-openapi: 13 tests, with a new server entry saas.main.ts and a mock SaaS bundle server helper;
unit tests: HiddenOpRegistry.snapshot() keeps its entries when the registry changes, and run_workflow resolves the started bundle's actions when a swap lands mid-run.
Also moved the /readyz helper from bundle-signing.e2e.spec.ts into the shared client helper, so both specs use it.
Run:
npx nx test demo-e2e-skilled-openapi: 7 suites, 73 tests, all passed (the new spec also passed on a second run);
npx nx test plugin-skilled-openapi: 44 suites, 638 tests, all passed;
npx nx test skills: 3 suites, 249 tests, all passed;
npx nx run demo-e2e-skilled-openapi:typecheck and npx nx run plugin-skilled-openapi:typecheck: passed; tsc --noEmit -p plugins/plugin-skilled-openapi/tsconfig.lib.json: no errors;
prettier and eslint --no-ignore on every changed file: clean.
Without the fix, the in-flight workflow test fails with unknown action "getAccountPlan" after 17 calls.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added support for loading skill bundles from a SaaS source, with configurable authentication, polling, and cache settings.
Workflows already in progress continue using the operations available when they started, even when a bundle changes.
Previously cached bundles remain available during source outages; invalid bundles are rejected without replacing the active version.
Bug Fixes
SaaS bundle redirects are not followed, and a cache-write failure does not prevent a successfully pulled bundle from being served.
Documentation
Clarified how in-progress workflows behave when static or SaaS bundles are updated.
…s on the operations it started on
run_workflow looked each action up in the live operation registry, so a bundle
applied while a workflow ran switched it to the new version's operations
halfway: an action the new version dropped answered "unknown action", and one
it changed ran its new definition. The workflow now resolves its actions from
a snapshot of the registry taken when it starts.
…ull token checked against its JWKS
The saas source was covered only by unit tests with a stubbed fetch. A new
spec runs the production-settings server against a mock SaaS bundle server
over https (certificate made at test start, trusted through
NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS), with ES256 pull tokens and a JWKS made at test start
and bundles signed at test start:
- the startup pull: the pull token goes to the bundle endpoint only, the JWKS
is read without it, and the bundle is served and cached;
- a new version applied by polling: skills and actions change together, and
connected clients get tools, resources and skills list_changed;
- a version with a bad signature, or one that fails the bundle schema, is not
applied, the old one keeps serving, and the log says why;
- a workflow running across a swap finishes on its own version's operations;
- pull tokens with the wrong audience or issuer, expired, or signed by a key
outside the JWKS: nothing is pulled, every meta-tool answers
SKILL_BUNDLE_NOT_LOADED and /readyz answers 503;
- the bundle server down at startup: the cached bundle serves; with no cache,
SKILL_BUNDLE_NOT_LOADED until the first poll that succeeds;
- a 302 from the bundle endpoint is not followed;
- a cache directory the server can't write still serves the pulled bundle.
The pull request adds SaaS bundle configuration and end-to-end coverage. It also snapshots hidden-operation registry entries for each workflow so in-flight workflows continue resolving actions from their starting registry state.
HiddenOpRegistry.snapshot() copies the current entries. RunWorkflowTool resolves actions from that snapshot. Tests cover registry replacement during execution, and documentation describes behavior for active workflows.
The E2E app accepts SaaS plugin setup and adds a SaaS server entry point. ProductionEnvironment retains TLS, bundle, and signing material for test use.
SaaS test harness apps/e2e/demo-e2e-skilled-openapi/e2e/helpers/mock-bundle-server.ts, apps/e2e/demo-e2e-skilled-openapi/e2e/helpers/skilled-client.ts, apps/e2e/demo-e2e-skilled-openapi/e2e/bundle-signing.e2e.spec.ts
Test helpers issue pull tokens, serve JWKS and bundles over HTTPS, record requests, and expose readiness checks. The bundle-signing E2E test uses the shared readiness helper.
Tests cover startup pulls and polling, invalid bundles and tokens, updates during active workflows, startup outages, redirects, and cache-write failures.
agentfront/frontmcp#1088: Adds the production E2E environment that this PR extends for SaaS bundle tests.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Capture the snapshot before loading the sandbox.
If a bundle swap completes while either dynamic import is pending, this workflow snapshots the new bundle even though ensureLoaded() completed on the previous bundle. A script using an action removed by the swap can then fail with unknown action. Capture the committed snapshot immediately after ensureLoaded(), before the imports.

…workflow validates against the bundle it started on
The cache keyed compiled input and output schemas by bundle version and operation id. A watched bundle
changed without a new version kept validating against the old schemas, and a workflow running on the
operations it started with could validate against a newer bundle's. Keying by the operation object
gives each applied bundle its own schemas; the old ones are garbage collected.
The read-only cache e2e skips where mode bits don't stop writes: as root, and on Windows.
