feat(sdk,plugins): the Skilled OpenAPI plugin runs in a web page, with run_workflow in the browser enclave - #1101
The Skilled OpenAPI plugin now runs inside a web page. A FrontMCP server built with the SDK's browser create() serves search_skill, load_skill, execute_action and run_workflow to an agent in the page, and their calls reach the REST API from the browser.
Up to 1.11.0 the plugin couldn't run in a page:
the bundle didn't build until @enclave-vm/core's main entry and Node's built-ins were stubbed;
startup crashed with setImmediate is not defined;
every request to a named host was refused, since the outbound check needs node:dns;
the response reader used Buffer.concat.
This PR stacks on #1100 (a pulled bundle is cached only once it's applied), which stacks on #1099 (confirmation of destructive actions). It merges #1100 in. The merge had no conflicts.
Startup and the request path
The first sync is deferred with setTimeout(…, 0) in place of setImmediate. Every runtime has setTimeout, and the intent stays the same: the sync starts after scope.skills is wired. Stateless Workers still skip it.
An answer's chunks are joined into one Uint8Array, not a Buffer. Nothing else on the request and response path (the OpenAPI runtime, error-body capping and redaction, parseResponse) uses a Node-only global. The pinned fetch, which uses Buffer.byteLength, runs only on Node.js, where the outbound check resolved addresses.
The outbound check in a browser
These checks are unchanged:
https: only, unless allowHttp;
the host must be the operation's declared service host;
cloud metadata host names are refused;
IP-literal hosts: private and loopback refused unless allowPrivateNetworks, link-local and metadata always.
Only the DNS step is skipped in a browser, a page or a Web Worker. A browser can't resolve a name, and its own rules (CORS, Private Network Access) govern the connection.
On Node.js and Workers, a name that can't be resolved is still refused unless allowPrivateNetworks.
The browser is detected as the SDK detects it: getRuntimeContext().runtime === 'browser' from @frontmcp/utils, which only its browser build reports. Workers resolve utils' workerd build and report edge. The helpers named in the plan don't fit: isBrowser() is a WebCrypto check that is also true on Node.js, and hasEdgeGlobalScope isn't exported.
node:dns is now imported by a non-literal name, as the pinned fetch imports its modules, so a page's bundler doesn't try to resolve it. It was the plugin's only literal Node import.
run_workflow in a browser page
In a browser page, which has the DOM the iframes need, the script runs in @enclave-vm/browser's BrowserEnclave: two nested sandboxed iframes whose content security policy blocks eval, the Function constructor and network access. Everywhere else, a browser Web Worker included, it runs in @enclave-vm/core/worker's interpreter, as before.
@enclave-vm/browser is a new optional peer. A page without it gets the same error, naming the right package: workflow execution unavailable: the @enclave-vm sandbox is not installed. Install @enclave-vm/browser and @enclave-vm/ast to enable run_workflow.
How tool arguments reach the handler: the BrowserEnclave applies callTool's options inside the sandbox and passes its tool handler only the input. With { throwOnError: false } it resolves to { success, data | error }, not feat(sdk,plugins): a failed action shows the API's error body, callTool takes { throwOnError: false }, and a failed workflow is an error result #1095's { ok, status, data, error? }. Its validator also refuses the prelude the interpreter path declares, since AgentScript has no function declarations. So before the script runs, each callTool(actionId, input, options) is rewritten to callTool(actionId, { ...input, __callToolOptions: options }). That is what the prelude does at run time, so the handler sees the same input on both paths.
One difference remains, and the README documents it: the BrowserEnclave checks the script against AgentScript's rules before it runs. So callTool's action id must be a string literal, and a name such as fetch fails the run with AgentScript validation failed: ….
The two sandboxes sit behind one WorkflowSandbox interface (compile, run), which the tool picks from. The tool's authorize → validate → confirm → request path is unchanged.
The SDK: @enclave-vm/core stays out of the browser build
The SDK's job bridge imported @enclave-vm/core with a literal import(). A page that had it installed, for the plugin's @enclave-vm/core/worker for example, failed to build with webpack on the core's vm and worker_threads imports.
The bridge now loads it through a #enclave-core import. Like #shared-server, it resolves to a stub in the browser and worker builds: a dynamic job there fails with Dynamic jobs need Node.js: @enclave-vm/core, the sandbox they run in, does not run in a browser or a Worker.
On Node.js the import and its missing-dependency error are unchanged.
The import is registered where the others are: libs/sdk/package.jsonimports, tsconfig.base.json paths, jest.imports-mapper.js, the lint allow-list, and the worker-conditions guard.
The bundle-size suite no longer stubs @enclave-vm/core, so its webpack builds fail again if the browser build reaches it. The bundle sizes didn't change.
Bundlers
What a page needs to build the plugin:
Vite builds the page as it is.
esbuild and webpack 5 need settings for mcp-from-openapi, which the plugin's OpenAPI runtime uses. It imports Node's dns, http, https, path and fs/promises with literal import()s, inside try/catch.
webpack: new webpack.IgnorePlugin({ resourceRegExp: /^(node:)?(dns|http|https|path|fs\/promises)$/, contextRegExp: /mcp-from-openapi/ }).
Both settings are documented. The fix belongs upstream in mcp-from-openapi.
User-facing change
What changed: The Skilled OpenAPI plugin runs in a server built with the SDK's browser create(). In a browser page, run_workflow runs in @enclave-vm/browser's sandbox, a new optional peer. In a browser, the outbound check doesn't resolve host names and keeps its other checks. In the SDK's browser and worker builds, a dynamic job fails with Dynamic jobs need Node.js…, and the build no longer references @enclave-vm/core.
Before → after:
In a page, startup threw setImmediate is not defined → the server starts.
Every request to a named host was refused with ssrf check rejected request: DNS resolution failed… unless allowPrivateNetworks → it's sent; the browser's CORS and Private Network Access rules apply.
Reading an answer failed with Buffer is not defined → it's read.
run_workflow needed @enclave-vm/core → in a page it needs @enclave-vm/browser and @enclave-vm/ast, and without them it says so.
A webpack page build failed on @enclave-vm/core's vm and worker_threads when the package was installed → it builds without stubbing it.
the @enclave-vm/core row of "What a Browser Bundle Leaves Out";
two troubleshooting rows.
The catalog has no Skilled OpenAPI page of its own. The plugin's README has a new Browser section: what works, installing @enclave-vm/browser, the outbound-check difference, CORS, credentials in the page, and bundler settings.
Tests
Plugin unit tests: 49 suites, 709 tests, all passing (after the merge). New:
browser-runtime.spec.ts (12 tests):
the browser and page detection;
in a browser, a declared host passes without a DNS lookup, and the scheme, host allowlist, metadata host name and IP-literal checks still refuse;
on Node.js, a name that can't be resolved is still refused;
executeOperation reads a chunked answer with globalThis.Buffer removed.
workflow-sandbox.spec.ts (7 tests):
a browser page picks the BrowserEnclave with 25 calls and 8 s, and disposes it;
Node.js and a browser Web Worker pick the interpreter;
a page without @enclave-vm/browser gets the unavailable error that names it;
a compiled browser program, run with a recording callTool, moves each call's options into its input, nested calls included;
a script that doesn't parse is rejected on both paths.
SDK:src/job plus the browser entry-points spec, 20 suites, 248 tests. New: job-enclave.bridge.browser.spec.ts, where the stub refuses a dynamic job and @enclave-vm/core isn't loaded. node --test scripts/worker-export-conditions.test.mjs: 9 passing.
Browser e2e:nx run demo-e2e-skilled-openapi:test:pw, 12 tests (4 in each of Chromium, Firefox and WebKit), all passing. Webpack's target: 'web', with no Node fallbacks, bundles a page's create() server from the built packages, with the plugin and an inline bundle. Against an HTTPS API that Playwright routes:
search_skill, load_skill and execute_action reach it with the bundle's bearer credential;
run_workflow runs in the BrowserEnclave (its iframes attach), its callTool reaches the API, and { throwOnError: false } gives { ok: false, status: 404, data };
a failed call ends the run with the text it has on Node: action "getInvoice" failed with status 404: {"error":"not found"};
a script's fetch is refused, and no request goes out.
Node e2e:nx test demo-e2e-skilled-openapi: 8 suites, 81 tests, all passing (after the merge).
Bundle size:nx run demo-e2e-bundle-size:test, 12 suites, 63 tests, all passing. With @enclave-vm/core no longer stubbed, the sizes are unchanged: create() + one tool is 1,288,882 bytes, with WebMCP 1,296,074, and the Vite initial chunk 763,249. The budgets are unchanged.
Other checks:
nx run-many -t typecheck -p plugin-skilled-openapi sdk demo-e2e-skilled-openapi demo-e2e-bundle-size and nx run demo-e2e-bundle-size:typecheck-e2e pass;
tsc --noEmit passes on the plugin's and the SDK's tsconfig.lib.json;
nx test skills: 249 passing;
eslint, prettier and scripts/fix-unused-imports.mjs are clean.
Playwright's routed answers skip the browser's CORS check, so CORS is documented rather than tested. The Playwright suites, this one included, aren't part of CI's e2e job, which runs the jest test targets.
The job bridge imported @enclave-vm/core with a literal import(), so the
SDK's browser build named it, and a page that had it installed (for the
Skilled OpenAPI plugin's @enclave-vm/core/worker, say) failed to build with
webpack on the core's vm and worker_threads imports. The bridge now loads it
through a #enclave-core import that the browser and worker builds resolve to
a stub, as #shared-server does: a dynamic job there fails with "Dynamic jobs
need Node.js". Node keeps the same import and the same missing-dependency
error.
The bundle-size suite no longer stubs @enclave-vm/core, so its webpack
bundles fail again if the browser build reaches it, and its webpack helper
takes an app's own plugins.
A server the SDK's browser create() builds can now serve the plugin's four
tools to an agent in the page. Up to 1.11.0 it failed to start there
(setImmediate is not defined), refused every request to a named host, and
read answers with Buffer.
- The proactive first sync is deferred with setTimeout, which every runtime
has.
- An answer's chunks are joined into one Uint8Array, not a Buffer.
- In a browser, a page or a Web Worker, the outbound check no longer
resolves a host name, which a browser can't do: CORS and Private Network
Access govern the connection there. The https-only rule, the declared
service host, and the IP-literal checks still apply, and Node and Workers
still refuse a name they can't resolve. node:dns is imported by a
non-literal name, so a page's bundler doesn't try to resolve it.
- run_workflow runs its script in @enclave-vm/browser's BrowserEnclave in a
browser page, which has the DOM its iframes need, and in
@enclave-vm/core/worker's interpreter everywhere else. That sandbox applies
callTool's options itself and hands its tool handler only the input, so
each callTool(actionId, input, options) is rewritten to carry its options
in its input, as the interpreter's prelude does: throwOnError: false still
answers { ok, status, data, error? }. The limits, error texts, isError and
the confirmation before the script starts are unchanged.
- @enclave-vm/browser is an optional peer. A page without it answers the
same "workflow execution unavailable" error, naming @enclave-vm/browser.
A page's create() server with the plugin and an inline bundle, bundled from
the built packages by webpack's target: 'web' with no Node fallbacks, runs
in each browser against a routed HTTPS API: search_skill, load_skill and
execute_action reach it with the bundle's credential, run_workflow runs in
the BrowserEnclave's iframes and its callTool reaches it, with the
{ throwOnError: false } result and the failure text it has on Node, and a
script's fetch is refused. Run it with nx run demo-e2e-skilled-openapi:test:pw.
The Skilled OpenAPI plugin now supports browser-page workflows through a browser sandbox and uses browser-specific request handling. The SDK selects Node or browser enclave-loading behavior by runtime. The changes add browser integration tests, bundler support, dependency and project configuration, and browser-use documentation.
SDK enclave loading now resolves through #enclave-core. Node imports @enclave-vm/core and reports missing optional dependency instructions. Browser and Worker builds report that dynamic jobs require Node.js.
Browser runtime and request handling plugins/plugin-skilled-openapi/src/executor/browser-runtime.ts, plugins/plugin-skilled-openapi/src/executor/ssrf-guard.ts, plugins/plugin-skilled-openapi/src/executor/openapi-runtime.ts, plugins/plugin-skilled-openapi/src/__tests__/browser-runtime.spec.ts
Runtime helpers detect browser pages. Browser hostname checks skip DNS resolution after other URL checks. Response chunks are combined with Uint8Array instead of Buffer. Tests cover runtime detection, URL checks, DNS failures, and chunked responses.
