Summary

Every release so far (v0.1.0 through v0.8.2 at the time of writing) ships a Certification CRD that Kubernetes 1.29 through 1.33 refuse to create:

CustomResourceDefinition "certifications.nvcre.nvidia.com" is invalid: ...
estimated rule cost exceeds budget by factor of 8.1x

nvcrectl setup init stops at [helm] apply CRD certifications.nvcre.nvidia.com, even though install.md says "Kubernetes 1.29+". The other six CRDs install.

Root cause. Through 1.33, the API server costs any CEL rule on an x-kubernetes-int-or-string value (resource.Quantity) as a 3 MiB string, whatever its maxLength (k8s.io/apiserver pkg/cel/common/schemas.go). 1.34 started honouring maxLength. That is why CI, which runs envtest 1.36 only, never saw it.

The four quantity() rules from #232 sit under categories (maxItems: 64), so each is charged 64 times. They exceed both the per-rule and the whole-schema budgets.

Measured on envtest 1.29.5 through 1.33.0:

  • Lowering maxLength changes nothing.
  • The request ≤ limit rule fits only at maxItems ≤ 7, and the catalog has 8 entries.
  • Every cheaper CEL rewrite I tried is either still costed as 3 MiB or wrong for one of the two value types.

The full measurements are in ADR-105.

What changed

  • CRD: no CEL rule reads a quantity any more.
    • cpu and memory carry a Pattern for a non-negative quantity whose exponent is a whole number of at most two digits. Negative and malformed strings are therefore still rejected at admission, and so is anything ParseQuantity cannot decode quickly to the value written. That includes "1e1.5", which controller-gen's own Quantity pattern allows but ParseQuantity refuses.
    • +kubebuilder:validation:Schemaless stops controller-gen from also emitting its looser pattern in an allOf, which would add a second, field-less error to every rejection.
    • categories keeps maxItems: 64.
  • Controller: ValidateCertificationResources (pkg/controller/resources_validation.go) rejects a request above its limit and a negative quantity. It runs next to the unknown-category check, before any Workflow exists, and sets the Certification to Failed with the new reason InvalidResources. The message names the field path and both values, and lists up to ten violations at once, then counts the rest.
  • nvcrectl: readCertification runs the same check, so certification render and run --cert-file refuse the file before submitting it.
  • Regression test: test/crdcompat plus make test-crd-compat, and a new crd-compat CI job.
    • It installs every chart CRD on each minor from MIN_K8S_VERSION (1.29) up to ENVTEST_K8S_VERSION, and checks that the server really is that minor.
    • Every minor is tested, not only 1.29, because the estimator prices the same rule differently on 1.29 and on 1.30–1.33.
    • It fails if either bound is unreadable or the range is empty, so a misconfigured bound cannot pass by testing nothing.
    • A second test keeps the minimum in install.md equal to MIN_K8S_VERSION.
  • Validation harness: a case can now provide input_raw.yaml, which is submitted exactly as written. input.yaml goes through the typed Certification first, which turns a bare integer into a string and refuses an unparseable quantity before the API server sees it.
  • Docs:
    • ADR-105.
    • install.md: still 1.29+, now saying that releases before this fix need 1.34+.
    • The catalog and troubleshooting pages cover InvalidResources.
    • CLAUDE.md and AGENTS.md add the new target and a pitfall against CEL on quantity fields.

Changes since the first review

  • The pattern's exponent is now a whole number, so "1e1.5" is rejected again. New case: validation/certification-resources-fractional-exponent.
  • The exponent is capped at two digits (ef70b332), following the CodeRabbit finding. New raw boundary cases: 1e99 and 1e-99 are accepted; 1e100 and 1e9999999999999999999 are rejected.
  • New input_raw.yaml mode, used by:
    • the fractional-exponent case;
    • a new certification-resources-bare-negative-integer case, which is accepted and pins the known gap;
    • certification-resources-integer-quantities-inverted, which now really sends integers.
  • Release references no longer name a version.
  • Rebased on main, amended into one commit signed with -S -s, and agent attribution removed.

Changes since the second round of review

  • Merged current main. The ADR is renumbered to ADR-105 (cb5bcf43), because feat: add Akamai RTX PRO 6000 TCP overlays #537 took 101.
  • make test-crd-compat no longer passes when it tests nothing: an unreadable bound or an empty range now fails it.
  • The violation list is capped at ten, so the Failed condition message stays far below its 32768-byte limit.
  • New render-error cases pin the cap (twelve violations) and the comparison boundary (a request equal to its limit must render).
  • Comments no longer claim the pattern decodes to the value written: ParseQuantity rounds a value below 1n up to 1n.
  • pkg/catalog/loader.go no longer says the CRD rejects an inverted pair.
  • CONTRIBUTING.md documents CRD Compatibility.
  • validationInput rejects a case that has both input files, and the integer case is renamed to -inverted.

Testing

  • Tests pass locally: make lint, make build, make test
  • Manual testing completed
  • No breaking changes (or documented)

make test-crd-compat: all 7 CRDs install on 1.29, 1.30, 1.31, 1.32, 1.33, 1.34, 1.35 and 1.36.

The test catches the bug. Run on the old CRD, it fails on exactly 1.29–1.33 and passes 1.34–1.36.

Real cluster, v1.32.10, kubectl apply --dry-run=server:

  • The old CRD is refused with the originally reported errors (4.0x ×4, 8.1x ×2, total 3.3x).
  • The CRDs from this branch are accepted.
  • An earlier build of this branch was also installed there with nvcrectl setup init, and the controller has been running against it.

Controller case. reconcile/certification-invalid-resources has matching nodes, so without the check a Workflow would be created. I confirmed the case fails with the check compiled out, and that the Workflow created then has exactly the name the case pins with expectAbsent.

nvcrectl: nvcrectl certification render on an inverted pair exits 1 with spec.categories[0].options.resources: requests.cpu (128) must not exceed limits.cpu (64).

Reviewer notes

Behaviour changes, all documented in ADR-105's Consequences:

  • An inverted request/limit pair now passes admission. The Certification then goes to Failed / InvalidResources, with a Warning event, before any Workflow is created.
  • An unquoted negative integer such as cpu: -1 behaves the same way. No marker can express it, since controller-gen refuses Minimum on a Quantity. Only raw YAML can send that form, because Go clients serialize quantities as strings.
  • The admission error for a negative string is now the API server's pattern message, which shows the regex, instead of "cpu must be a non-negative quantity".
  • kubectl explain shows no type for cpu and memory. The published schema dropped anyOf: [integer, string], but x-kubernetes-int-or-string still enforces the same two types.

Why the exponent is capped at two digits. maxLength: 32 leaves room for long exponents, and ParseQuantity misbehaves on them:

  • past int64, it fails to decode;
  • past int32, it wraps silently (1e4294967297 decodes as 10);
  • a large negative exponent decodes slowly (1e-9999999 takes 1.1 s, and 1e-99999999 ran past 15 s).

One Certification that fails to decode breaks every typed List of Certifications in its namespace, including the controller's informer and nvcrectl's run-namespace RoleBinding cleanup. Two digits allow 1e99 and 1e-99, far beyond any real value. Of about a million generated strings that the pattern accepts, every one decodes.

Golden changes, all diagnosed before regenerating:

  • Four validation/certification-resources-* cases (request above limit) now expect accepted: true. They pin that the pair CEL does not come back.
  • negative-pair and negative-memory-global stay rejected on the same field, with the pattern message.
  • fractional-exponent carries the pattern message too, so its regex text changed with the cap.
  • New: five raw validation cases (fractional exponent, bare negative integer, and the three exponent-boundary cases), one reconcile case, and six certification-render-errors cases.

ADR number: renumbered to ADR-105. 101 (#537) and 102 (#539) are on main, and 103 and 104 are claimed by #543 and #510.

📝 Walkthrough

The CRD schema replaces CEL quantity checks with a non-negative quantity pattern. Shared validation checks resource quantities and request-limit pairs in certification files and before the controller creates a Workflow. Invalid Certifications receive the InvalidResources reason. The change also adds a Make target, tests, and a CI job to check CRD installation across supported Kubernetes minors, and updates documentation.

The diagnosis is right and the fix works. I merged this onto current main, and make lint, the unit tests, the full cmd/integration suite and make test-crd-compat (1.29 through 1.36) all pass. With main's Certification CRD swapped back in, 1.32 refuses it with the budget errors you reported and 1.34 accepts it, so the new test does catch the bug. Three things need to change before merge.

1. The new pattern accepts quantities that don't parse, and one of them breaks typed Lists.

The exponent in the new Pattern may have a fractional part: [eE](\+|-)?(([0-9]+(\.[0-9]*)?)|(\.[0-9]+)). resource.ParseQuantity only accepts a whole-number exponent, so "1e1.5" and "1e.5" match the pattern but fail to parse. The old quantity() CEL rule rejected them at admission. Now nothing does. On envtest 1.36:

Old CRD This PR
Create a Certification with cpu: "1e1.5" rejected accepted
Typed List of Certifications afterwards works fails: quantities must match the regular expression ...

The controller's informer reads Certifications with that same typed List, so one such object stops reconciliation of every Certification in its namespace. A typo is enough to cause it.

Suggested fix: make the exponent a whole number, i.e. ([eE](\+|-)?[0-9]+), and add a validation/ case where cpu: "1e1.5" is rejected. ADR-101 also calls this pattern "the standard Kubernetes quantity grammar without a leading -". It's controller-gen's Quantity regex, which is looser than what ParseQuantity accepts, so that sentence needs updating too.

2. "v0.8.0 and earlier" is already out of date.

v0.8.1 was released today and ships the same 12 quantity() rules (git show v0.8.1:helm/cluster-readiness-engine/crds/nvcre.nvidia.com_certifications.yaml | grep -c 'quantity(' prints 12), so it also fails on 1.29 through 1.33. That wording appears in docs/getting-started/install.md, ADR-101 (Context and Consequences), the crd-compat job comment in ci.yml and the test/crdcompat package doc. Something like "releases before the one containing this fix" won't go stale again.

3. Attribution.

The commit has a Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> trailer, so GitHub lists a second author, and the PR description ends with a "Generated with Claude Code" footer. CLAUDE.md ("Git Configuration") and CONTRIBUTING.md (AI-assisted contributions) don't allow agent attribution in commits or PR bodies. The DCO check only looks at Signed-off-by, so CI won't flag it. Please amend the commit to drop the trailer (keep -S -s) and remove the footer from the description.

FYI, not blocking: #537 and #510 also add an ADR numbered 101, so whichever merges second will need to renumber.

…33 (ADR-101)

Every release so far ships a Certification CRD that API servers 1.29 to
1.33 refuse ("estimated rule cost exceeds budget"), so `nvcrectl setup
init` stops at "[helm] apply CRD certifications.nvcre.nvidia.com" although
the install guide says 1.29+.

Through 1.33 the API server costs any CEL rule on an int-or-string value
(resource.Quantity) as a 3 MiB string whatever its maxLength; 1.34 began
honouring maxLength, which is why CI, on envtest 1.36, never noticed. The
four quantity() rules added in NVIDIA#232 sit under categories (maxItems 64)
and exceed the per-rule and per-schema budgets. Lowering maxLength does
nothing there, and the request/limit rule fits only at maxItems <= 7.

So no CEL rule reads a quantity any more:
- cpu and memory carry a Pattern instead: a non-negative quantity whose
exponent is a whole number, so a negative, malformed or unparseable
string such as "1e1.5" is still rejected at admission. Schemaless keeps
controller-gen from also emitting its looser Quantity pattern in an
allOf, which would report every bad value twice.
- ValidateCertificationResources rejects a request above its limit and a
negative quantity. The controller runs it before creating any Workflow
and fails the Certification with reason InvalidResources; nvcrectl runs
it when reading a certification file.

Validation cases can now be submitted as written (input_raw.yaml), since
the typed decode of input.yaml turns a bare integer into a string and
refuses an unparseable quantity before it reaches the API server.

To keep this from recurring, `make test-crd-compat` installs every chart
CRD on each Kubernetes minor from MIN_K8S_VERSION (1.29) up to the envtest
version, and a new CI job runs it. On the old CRD it fails on exactly
1.29-1.33. A test also keeps the install guide's minimum equal to
MIN_K8S_VERSION.

Thanks for the thorough review — all three are addressed in the amended commit 359b0d07.

1. Pattern. The exponent is now a whole number, ([eE](\+|-)?[0-9]+), and validation/certification-resources-fractional-exponent checks that cpu: "1e1.5" is rejected. Writing that case turned up a harness limitation: input.yaml is decoded into the typed Certification first, so "1e1.5" failed inside the test before it ever reached the API server. Cases can now use input_raw.yaml, which is submitted exactly as written. I also used it for a new certification-resources-bare-negative-integer case, which pins the known gap as accepted, and for certification-resources-integer-quantities-invalid, which until now was sending strings rather than integers. ADR-101 now describes the pattern as controller-gen's Quantity pattern without - and with a whole-number exponent, and says why it has to be stricter.

Update: I've since capped the exponent at two digits ([0-9]{1,2}) in ef70b332, after CodeRabbit flagged the same gap. Within maxLength: 32, [0-9]+ still allowed exponents ParseQuantity mishandles: past int64 it fails to decode; past int32 it wraps silently (1e4294967297 decodes as 10); a large negative exponent is slow (1e-9999999 takes 1.1 s, 1e-99999999 ran past 15 s). ADR-101 now records the cap as part of the decision rather than as a residual risk, and new raw cases pin 1e99 and 1e-99 as accepted and 1e100 and 1e9999999999999999999 as rejected.

2. Release wording. All five places now say "releases before the one containing this fix" (or the equivalent), and the branch is rebased on main.

3. Attribution. Amended into a single commit signed with -S -s and no trailer, and the footer is gone from the description. Sorry about that.

Noted on the ADR number; I'll renumber if #537 or #510 lands first.

A whole-number exponent still left room, within maxLength 32, for values
that resource.ParseQuantity mishandles: past int64 it refuses the
exponent, past int32 it wraps it to a different value (1e4294967297
decodes as 10), and a large negative one decodes slowly (1e-9999999 takes
1.1 s). One Certification that fails to decode breaks every typed List of
Certifications in its namespace, including the controller's informer and
nvcrectl's run-namespace RoleBinding cleanup.

Two digits allow 1e99 and 1e-99, far beyond any CPU or memory value. New
raw validation cases pin the boundary: 1e99 and 1e-99 are accepted, and
1e100 and 1e9999999999999999999 are rejected.

Thanks, all three are addressed, and the exponent cap goes beyond what I asked for in a good way.

  1. Pattern. The exponent is now a whole number of at most two digits, so every string the pattern admits decodes with ParseQuantity. The new raw cases pin the boundary: 1e1.5, 1e100 and 1e9999999999999999999 are rejected, and 1e99 and 1e-99 are accepted. input_raw.yaml is a useful fix to the harness too, since integer-quantities-invalid now really sends integers. ADR-101 explains why the pattern has to be stricter than controller-gen's.
  2. Release wording. No version-pinned wording is left.
  3. Attribution. Both commits carry only Signed-off-by and are verified, and the footer is gone.

What I checked, on this branch merged with current main:

  • make manifests generate produces no diff, and lint and build pass.
  • Unit tests in pkg/controller, pkg/certification and test/crdcompat pass, as does the full cmd/integration suite.
  • make test-crd-compat passes on every minor from 1.29 to 1.36.
  • About 300k random strings that match the new pattern all decode, and none comes out negative. The slowest took 0.4 ms.
  • The only other int-or-string pattern in the Certification CRD is env[].valueFrom.resourceFieldRef.divisor, and the existing env CEL rule already rejects any valueFrom, so it can't be set.

Two optional nits, neither blocking:

  • certification-resources-integer-quantities-invalid now expects accepted: true. A name like -integer-quantities-inverted would match what it checks.
  • validationInput silently prefers input_raw.yaml when a case also has input.yaml. Failing when both are present would catch a mistake, but nothing needs it today.

mlsorensen added a commit to mlsorensen/cluster-readiness-engine that referenced this pull request Oct 21, 2026
ADR-101 is taken by NVIDIA#510, NVIDIA#533 and NVIDIA#537, and 102 by NVIDIA#539.

Build on NVIDIA#510's networkAttachments rather than deferring an override
field: detection runs only when the resolved options set no list, and
the failure messages name the list as the fix.

From review:
- A single match in the workload namespace wins outright; the
equivalence rule applies only to candidates elsewhere, so a site under
namespaceIsolation can add its own NAD. State that the workload
  namespace is the Certification's.
- Only zero matches, differing matches, Forbidden and NoMatch are
terminal. Other list errors requeue through retryableCreateError.
- No default in the catalog loader: every caller sets the name, and
Build fails when it is empty with NICs requested.
- --dry-run warns on Forbidden, since it lists with the user's
kubeconfig rather than the controller's service account.
- Name networkAttachments and rdmaDeviceAccess: hostPath in the
zero-match message, say that an empty spec.config is never
equivalent, and hint at deleting a hand-made sriov-net copy.
- Correct the globalNamespaces note: default is implicit only while
  globalNamespaces is unset.
- List every place that names sriov-net as fact, and clarify the
  wrong-key test case.

The diagnosis is right and the fix is the correct shape: move what CEL cannot afford into a Pattern plus a controller check, and pin the floor with a test that installs the chart CRDs on every minor. The ADR explains the cost model well enough that the next person will not re-add a quantity() rule by accident.

One thing I would fix before this lands. make test-crd-compat exits 0 having tested nothing if MIN_K8S_VERSION ever ends up above ENVTEST_K8S_VERSION. seq 30 29 prints nothing and exits 0 under GNU coreutils, so the loop body never runs, failed stays empty, and the target succeeds:

$ make test-crd-compat MIN_K8S_VERSION=1.40 ENVTEST_K8S_VERSION=1.36
EXIT=0

No output, no test invoked. There is a second, more reachable way in: ENVTEST_K8S_VERSION (Makefile:428) is a $(shell …) that deliberately exit 1s when gomodver is empty, so make sees an empty value, hi becomes empty, and seq failing inside a for list word does not trip errexit either. The crd-compat job's only step is make test-crd-compat and Makefile:122 scopes it to -run '^TestCRDsInstall$', so TestDocumentedFloorIsTested does not run there and cannot catch the inversion. That is the same silent-pass shape that let the original bug ship through every release, in the job that exists to stop it. Counting iterations and asserting at least one ran would close it.

Three smaller things:

  1. pkg/catalog/loader.go:621 still says "the Certification CRD's CEL rules reject an inverted pair at admission (see CategoryResources)", which this PR makes false. You updated the two sibling copies in docs/concepts/catalog.md and the CategoryResources doc comment, but this one sits on resolveTrainingResources, the single function that consumes these quantities, and the cross-reference now leads to a comment that says the opposite. Worth reusing the CategoryResources wording: the controller fails with InvalidResources before any Workflow, nvcrectl refuses the file, and point at pkg/controller/resources_validation.go and ADR-101.

  2. The invariant in the CategoryResourceList comment ("the Pattern accepts only what ParseQuantity decodes to the value written, and quickly"), repeated at ADR-101 line 57, claims more than the pattern delivers, and the PR ships a counterexample. Against the pinned apimachinery, ParseQuantity("1e-99") succeeds and String() returns "1e-9", and certification-resources-exponent-two-digits/input_raw.yaml:23 pins exactly that value as accepted under a comment asserting it decodes to the value written. Plain digits are lossy the same way (ParseQuantity("1000000000000000000000").String() is "1"), and loader.go:635 renders through String(). The plain-digit branch and maxLength: 32 are byte-identical on main, so that half is not yours. The two-digit cap is still the right call. I would just drop "to the value written" from both places and say what the cap actually buys: bounded decode cost, no int32 wrap, no int64 refusal. And either fix the fixture comment or swap 1e-99 for a value that round-trips.

  3. CONTRIBUTING.md:178 still reads "Five checks are required before a pull request can merge: Lint, Build, Test, Verify, and UAT", and line 186 still describes make ci as chaining verify, lint, build and test, which matches Makefile:260 with test-crd-compat absent. You documented the new target in CLAUDE.md and AGENTS.md but not in the human-facing section. A contributor who adds a CEL rule, runs make ci, sees green on envtest 1.36 and then fails CRD Compatibility is in exactly the loop this PR shortens. Naming the check there, and saying test-crd-compat runs separately like test-uat (or folding it into ci), would keep it current the way #39 did for UAT.

Two notes inline on the validator.

if len(problems) == 0 {
return nil
}
return fmt.Errorf("invalid resources: %s", strings.Join(problems, "; "))

The "every violation at once" message is unbounded and can overrun the 32768-byte cap on status.conditions[].message. certification_controller.go:196 passes err.Error() straight into setCertificationFailed, categoryResourcesProblems emits up to 6 problems per category, and spec.categories keeps maxItems: 64, so the worst case is 384 problems. I measured it: 32549 bytes at 56 categories, 33131 at 57, 37205 at 64, and 47009 with maximal int64 negatives. Past the cap the status write is rejected as Invalid, updateStatusWithRetry returns the non-conflict error straight out, initializeCategoryStatuses propagates it, and the Certification requeues forever instead of recording InvalidResources.

It needs a deliberately pathological spec to reach, and only through the raw-YAML negative-integer form this PR pins as accepted (string-only specs top out around 13 KB at 64 categories), so this is robustness rather than a likely field failure. Capping the join at the first N violations with "and K more", or truncating to a byte budget before handing it over, would be enough.

Confirmed and fixed. It now reports at most ten violations plus "and K more", which keeps the message near 2 KiB. resources-many-violations (twelve violations) pins this.

Nothing that reaches this validator pins > rather than >=. I flipped the comparison and pkg/certification, pkg/render, pkg/catalog and test/helm all stayed green: every new certification-render-errors resources case uses a strictly-greater pair, so >= reproduces their error strings byte for byte.

The only equal-pair fixture, cmd/integration/testdata/validation/certification-resources-equal-limits/, is a CRD-admission case whose golden is {"accepted": true}; it never calls the validator, and with the CEL rules gone it reads accepted: true under any comparison semantics. Its quantities are not equal anyway (limits.cpu: "2" against requests.cpu: 1500m). I ran the validator over every kind: Certification document under the testdata trees, test/uat, config/samples and docs under both semantics, and that fixture is the only one whose verdict moves. So flipping this to >= would reject every legitimate requests.cpu: "6" / limits.cpu: "6" Certification with the suite still green. A certification-render-errors case with request equal to limit, expecting a clean render, would assert the boundary where the validator actually runs.

Added resources-request-equals-limit. A request equal to its limit must render, and with >= it now fails with "requests.cpu (6) must not exceed limits.cpu (6)".

ADR-101 is taken on main now. #537 merged its 101-akamai-rtxpro6000-tcp.md, so 101-kubernetes-floor-and-crd-cel-cost-budget.md on this branch collides, and git merge-tree origin/main on this head conflicts in docs/designs/README.md.

105 is the next free slot: 101 is Akamai, 102 is the scoped pod cache from #539, 103 is claimed by #543 and 104 by #510.

Worth doing in one pass, since the number is cited in about ten places beyond the file itself: api/v1alpha1/certification_types.go, pkg/controller/resources_validation.go, pkg/controller/helpers.go, pkg/certification/certification.go, test/crdcompat/crd_install_test.go, cmd/integration/validation_test.go, CLAUDE.md and AGENTS.md, docs/concepts/catalog.md, the Makefile and .github/workflows/ci.yml, plus the docs/designs/README.md row.

NVIDIA#537 merged its own ADR-101 (Akamai RTX PRO 6000 TCP overrides), and 102
through 104 are taken or claimed, so this branch's ADR moves to 105. Every
reference moves with it; the two remaining ADR-101 references are the
Akamai ones.

- test-crd-compat fails if MIN_K8S_VERSION or ENVTEST_K8S_VERSION does
not yield a minor, or if the range is empty. Before, `seq` produced
nothing and the target exited 0 having tested nothing.
- ValidateCertificationResources reports at most ten violations and
counts the rest. The message becomes the Failed condition message,
capped at 32768 bytes; 64 categories with six violations each would
overrun it and leave the status unwritable.
- New render-error cases pin the cap (twelve violations) and the
comparison boundary (a request equal to its limit renders).
- Comments no longer overclaim. ParseQuantity rounds a value below 1n up
to 1n, so the pattern guarantees a fast, successful decode, not an
exact one; and loader.go no longer says the CRD rejects an inverted
  pair.
- CONTRIBUTING.md documents CRD Compatibility and make test-crd-compat.
- validationInput fails when a case has both input.yaml and
input_raw.yaml, and the integer case is renamed to -inverted, which is
  what it checks.

Thanks @ndipebot and @kaynetu. Addressed in 9111f2b2, on top of a merge of current main:

  • ADR number: renumbered to ADR-105 everywhere (cb5bcf43). The two remaining ADR-101 references are the Akamai ones from feat: add Akamai RTX PRO 6000 TCP overlays #537.
  • Silent pass in test-crd-compat: I confirmed both paths exited 0 having tested nothing. The target now fails if either bound is not a number or the range is empty, counts the minors it ran, and ends with "CRDs installed on N Kubernetes minors". 1.40, an empty ENVTEST_K8S_VERSION, abc and 1.x9 now all exit non-zero with a message.
  • loader.go: the comment now points at InvalidResources, nvcrectl, resources_validation.go and ADR-105.
  • "to the value written": dropped. The comment and ADR now say what the cap buys (a decode that always succeeds, quickly, with no int64 refusal and no int32 wrap) and note the sub-1n rounding. I kept 1e-99 as the edge of the cap and fixed the fixture comment.
  • CONTRIBUTING.md: documents CRD Compatibility and make test-crd-compat alongside UAT. I didn't list it as required because I can't see branch protection; if you make it required, that sentence should name it.
  • @kaynetu's nits: the case is renamed to -integer-quantities-inverted, and validationInput fails when a case has both input files.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Validate the complete Kubernetes version bounds.

If an operator sets MIN_K8S_VERSION=2.29 and ENVTEST_K8S_VERSION=2.36, this target tests Kubernetes 1.29–1.36 and can report success. The extraction discards the configured major version, and line 124 inserts 1 instead. Reject bounds that are not exactly 1.<minor> before starting the loop.

Re-approving. Everything raised since my last approval is addressed:

  • ADR-105: the renumber is complete, the index row is in order, and no stale ADR-101 reference is left.
  • test-crd-compat: a minimum above the maximum (1.40), an empty ENVTEST_K8S_VERSION and abc now each fail with a message, and a normal run reports how many minors it tested.
  • Violation cap: the message stops at ten problems plus "and N more", so the Failed condition stays well under the 32768-byte limit. Both new render-error cases do pin the behavior: changing the comparison to >= fails resources-request-equals-limit, and removing the cap fails resources-many-violations.
  • The loader.go comment, the "value written" wording, CONTRIBUTING.md and both of my earlier nits are done.

On this head, make manifests generate gives no diff, the build passes, and so do pkg/controller, pkg/certification, pkg/catalog and the full cmd/integration suite. make test-crd-compat passes on all eight minors from 1.29 to 1.36.

Two optional nits, neither blocking:

  • test-crd-compat drops the major version and always tests 1.<minor>, so MIN_K8S_VERSION=2.29 would test 1.29, as CodeRabbit noted. That is only hypothetical today.
  • If TestCRDsInstall is ever renamed, -run '^TestCRDsInstall$' matches nothing and go test exits 0 on every minor, while the counter still reports them as tested. Failing on "no tests to run", or checking for the test's PASS line, would close it.

ADR-105 is the right landing spot and the renumber is complete. More importantly the make test-crd-compat guard is properly closed: every one of the four shapes that used to exit 0 having tested nothing is now rejected. I ran the guard's own logic over them and got 1.40/1.36 rejected as min above max, and an empty ENVTEST_K8S_VERSION, abc and 1.x9 all rejected as unreadable minors, while 1.29/1.36 accepts and would run eight. The tested counter plus the closing count line means a future change that empties the loop cannot pass quietly either, which was the actual failure mode.

Documenting the check in CONTRIBUTING.md alongside UAT closes the loop for someone who runs make ci, sees green on envtest 1.36, and then trips CRD Compatibility.
