Summary

Motivation

On OCI, every catalog entry that requests RDMA NICs attaches its worker pods to a hard-coded
NetworkAttachmentDefinition, network-operator/sriov-net, one attachment per NIC
(_lib/deps/oci-mlnxnics-comm.yaml). That name fits one cluster layout: a NVIDIA Network
Operator install using the SR-IOV CNI, with the NAD rendered into the network-operator
namespace. NVCRE works there today.

It doesn't fit other layouts:

  • A different namespace or name. AICR installs the Network Operator into
nvidia-network-operator, not network-operator, so its NADs never match the hard-coded
reference. The same goes for any cluster whose platform or admin named the network differently.
  • A different CNI. On OCI GB300 with oci-hpc-network-device-names 3.x, the NICs run in
switchdev mode and the representor naming breaks the SR-IOV CNI. A platform built that way
provides a host-device NAD instead (empty IPAM, since OCI assigns addresses by IPv6 SLAAC),
for example nvidia-network-operator/rdma-net. We hit this while developing such a setup.

On those clusters the pods are allocated their nvidia.com/mlnxnics VFs but fail to attach
net1..netN, and nothing in NVCRE says why. The only workaround is to create a
network-operator/sriov-net NAD by hand that duplicates the platform's own network.

The usual Kubernetes split is that the platform owns the secondary network and the workload
refers to it. NVCRE should find the platform's network rather than assume its name.

Proposal

ADR-103 builds on ADR-104 (networkAttachments, #510), which lets an operator name the networks
explicitly and, on OCI, replaces the hard-coded wiring. This ADR fixes the default for
Certifications that set no list.

Detection is gated on the render, not on its inputs. The controller builds the Workflow once with
a placeholder network name and applies overlays. Only if the placeholder survives, meaning the
category really attaches the OCI RDMA network, does it detect the NAD and build again with the
detected name. Every other category, such as dcgm-level4 on any OCI GPU, or nemotron on OCI
H100, lists nothing and is unchanged.

Detection lists NetworkAttachmentDefinitions and keeps those annotated
k8s.v1.cni.cncf.io/resourceName: nvidia.com/mlnxnics, the annotation Multus already needs to
hand each attachment its allocated VF. The candidates are the matches in the workload namespace
(the Certification's) if there are any, otherwise all matches:

  • exactly one: use it
  • several equivalent (same spec.config apart from name): pick the first sorted <ns>/<name>
    and emit a Normal event
  • several that differ, or zero: CertificationFailed with SecondaryNetworkDetectionFailed
before any workload is created, plus a Warning event. The message names networkAttachments
(and, for zero, rdmaDeviceAccess: hostPath and mlnxPerNode: 0) as ways forward.
  • Forbidden or the NAD API not served: terminal. Any other list error requeues.

The catalog has no default: every caller sets the name, and Build fails if it is missing.
Offline nvcrectl certification render sets network-operator/sriov-net explicitly, and says so
on stderr when the output attaches it. --dry-run runs the controller's resolution, except that it only warns on
Forbidden, since it lists with the user's kubeconfig. The manager gains get/list on
network-attachment-definitions, read uncached, with no watch. Multus namespaceIsolation is
documented, not solved. No API change beyond ADR-104's.

Clusters whose RDMA network has another name or namespace attach it with no manual step. A
network-operator/sriov-net NAD rendered by the Network Operator carries the resourceName
annotation and is detected like any other. Two setups that work today will fail closed, each with
a message saying how to fix it: a NAD written by hand without the annotation, and a hand-made copy
from the #542 workaround that differs from the platform's own NAD.

Builds on #510 (merged)

#510 merged as ADR-104, and this branch now includes it. The implementation builds on ADR-104's
versions of oci-mlnxnics-comm.yaml, catalog.go, loader.go, certification.go and
platform-detection.md. This PR only adds the ADR.

Follow-up considered and deferred

NVCRE creates its own NAD (host-device, empty IPAM, resourceName annotation) in the workload
namespace when none matches. It would sidestep namespaceIsolation, but needs create/delete RBAC
and lifecycle handling, and copies platform CNI details (including the switchdev/sriov issue) into
NVCRE. Review decision: not now. Detection plus networkAttachments (ADR-104) covers the known
layouts; revisit if a cluster turns up with no NAD for nvidia.com/mlnxnics and no way to add one.

…etection

Proposes resolving the secondary network the OCI RDMA fragment attaches
from the cluster, instead of rendering a hard-coded
network-operator/sriov-net. On OCI with mlnxPerNode > 0, the
Certification controller lists NetworkAttachmentDefinitions and keeps
those annotated k8s.v1.cni.cncf.io/resourceName: nvidia.com/mlnxnics.
One match is used. Several equivalent matches are picked
deterministically with a Normal event. Several that differ, zero
matches, or a list error fail the Certification with
SecondaryNetworkDetectionFailed before any workload is created.

Offline render keeps network-operator/sriov-net as a named default and
says so on stderr. --dry-run runs the controller's resolution. The
manager gains get and list on network-attachment-definitions, read
uncached. No API change.

The changes add ADR-103 and link it from the design index. The ADR proposes annotation-based discovery of OCI RDMA NetworkAttachmentDefinitions when the resolved Workflow includes the OCI attachment. It defines candidate selection, config equivalence, failure handling, controller and rendering behavior, and proposed implementation and testing scope.

…d recipe

The hard-coded network-operator/sriov-net fits a Network Operator
install using the SR-IOV CNI in the network-operator namespace. Say so,
and give the layouts it does not fit in general terms: AICR installs the
Network Operator into nvidia-network-operator, and OCI GB300 with NICs
in switchdev mode needs a host-device NAD under whatever name the
platform chose. Drop the reference to a recipe that has not shipped.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Align the platform documentation with ADR-101.

docs/concepts/platform-detection.md:89-99 still requires the fixed network-operator/sriov-net NAD. ADR-101 instead selects matching NADs by the nvidia.com/mlnxnics resource annotation and defines namespace-isolation rules. This mismatch can cause implementation planning to retain the fixed-name assumption or omit the isolation rules.

Update the OCI rows and document the matching-NAD and namespaceIsolation behavior next to them. The line-102 reference then becomes accurate.

Keying detection on k8s.v1.cni.cncf.io/resourceName is the right fact to key on, and the fail-closed stance is right for the controller. A few things need to change before this is ready.

Overlap with #510. #510 (approved, fixes #400) adds networkAttachments to CategoryOptions and WorkloadRunSpec. On OCI it replaces the sriov-net wiring outright, and it gates oci-mlnxnics-comm.yaml on not .HasNetworkAttachments. That is the override field this ADR lists as a deferred follow-up, so the ADR should build on it rather than defer it:

  • Detection runs only when the resolved category options have no networkAttachments.
  • The "several that differ" and zero-match messages point at networkAttachments as the fix.
  • The two changes touch the same files (oci-mlnxnics-comm.yaml, catalog.go, loader.go, pkg/certification/certification.go, platform-detection.md), so this one should be written against #510's version of them.

ADR number. 101 is also claimed by #510 (101-network-attachments.md), #533 and #537. This one needs a new number.

Other places that name sriov-net as fact. The Implementation list should cover them too:

  • the mlnxPerNode doc comment in api/v1alpha1/certification_types.go:220. Changing it changes the generated CRD description, so it needs make manifests.
  • pkg/catalog/entries/_lib/gpu-defaults.yaml:69
  • the header comment of oci-mlnxnics-comm.yaml
  • the OCI rows in docs/concepts/platform-detection.md:89-95, which state network-operator/sriov-net as what OCI renders
  • docs/api-reference/certification.md

CI. "Scan Go dependencies" fails on GO-2026-6809. The branch was cut from 765ff4a, before the Go 1.27.3 bump in #540, so a rebase clears it.

I checked the rest against main and it holds: the GKE TCPXO precedent, the two callers of createWorkflowForCategory and the name-collision terminal path, APIReader on the reconciler, the manager role as the place for cluster-wide reads under ADR-092, no OCI override in workloadrun.yaml, and the Multus deviceID / host-device reasoning.

| Several, all equivalent | Pick deterministically: a NAD in the Certification's namespace first, otherwise the first `<ns>/<name>` in sorted order. Emit a Normal `SecondaryNetworkDetection` event naming the choice and the equivalents it skipped. |
| Several that differ | Fail. List the candidates and the top-level config keys that differ. |
| Zero | Fail. Say what was found (NADs carrying another `resourceName`, or none) and: "create one, or set mlnxPerNode: 0 to certify without RDMA". |
| List error, RBAC denial, or the NAD API not served | Fail with that error's own message. Never treat it as zero matches. |

As written, a 503 or a timeout on the list ends the Certification, because Decision 3 makes every failure here terminal. createWorkflowForCategory already has retryableCreateError for exactly this case (#384). Only the outcomes a retry can't change should be terminal: Forbidden, the API not being served (meta.IsNoMatchError), zero matches, and several that differ. Anything else should come back as retryableCreateError and requeue.

Done in ecab62a. Decision 3 now separates the two: zero matches, several that differ, Forbidden and meta.IsNoMatchError are terminal, and any other list error returns retryableCreateError and requeues without touching status, as for #384. The testing plan covers a 5xx and a timeout.

Two things here.

  1. The Certification namespace and the workload namespace are the same: the Workflow is created in certification.Namespace, and the Job and TrainJob follow it. Line 44 and the Implementation section say "workload namespace". Pick one term and say they're the same.
  2. The local preference only applies among equivalent matches, so it doesn't deliver what Decision 6 promises. A site with namespaceIsolation that adds its own NAD in the workload namespace has most likely made it different from the cluster-wide one, so it lands in "several that differ" and fails. Under isolation the other namespaces' NADs can't be attached anyway. I'd make a single match in the workload namespace win outright, and apply the equivalence rule only to candidates outside it.

Both done in ecab62a. The ADR now says up front that the workload namespace is the Certification's namespace, and uses that one term throughout. A single match in the workload namespace wins outright, and the equivalence rule applies only to candidates elsewhere (Decision 2, reasoning under Rationale). There is a test case for a local NAD that differs from the cluster-wide one.

5. **Read-only, uncached, narrow RBAC.** The list goes through the manager's `APIReader` as an `unstructured` `k8s.cni.cncf.io/v1` `NetworkAttachmentDefinitionList`. Going uncached means no informer, so no `watch` verb and no permanent cache of every NAD in the cluster. Detection runs once per category Workflow creation, and only on OCI with `mlnxPerNode > 0`. `nvcre-manager-role` gains `get` and `list` on `k8s.cni.cncf.io/network-attachment-definitions`, and nothing else. This is a read, so it goes in the cluster-wide manager role, not in `nvcre-run-role` (ADR-092). Without that grant, the result is an explicit RBAC failure under rule 2.

6. **Document Multus `namespaceIsolation` rather than solve it.** With `namespaceIsolation: true`, Multus rejects a pod that references a NAD in another namespace, except the `default` namespace and any listed in `globalNamespaces`. Detection can pick a NAD in another namespace, and that is how both known clusters work. Sites with isolation enabled must add the NAD's namespace to `globalNamespaces` or provide a NAD in the workload namespace, which detection then prefers.

Agree with CodeRabbit here. default is implicitly allowed only when globalNamespaces is unset. Once it's set, default has to be listed too. See also the line 29 comment: as the rules stand, "provide a NAD in the workload namespace, which detection then prefers" fails whenever that NAD differs from the cluster-wide one.

Corrected in Decision 6: default is implicit only while globalNamespaces is unset. That matches Multus pkg/types/conf.go, where setting it replaces the default list. With the line 29 change, the "provide a NAD in the workload namespace" option now works even when that NAD differs.

## Implementation

- `pkg/catalog/catalog.go`, `loader.go`: add `BuildConfig.OCISecondaryNetwork`, `TemplateData.OCISecondaryNetwork` (set to `DefaultOCISecondaryNetwork` when empty), and the constants `DefaultOCISecondaryNetwork` and `OCIMlnxResourceName`.

Defaulting TemplateData.OCISecondaryNetwork inside the catalog loader means any controller path that doesn't set the field renders network-operator/sriov-net with no error. Decision 3 says that never happens on OCI, but nothing enforces it. Either have the offline CLI path set the default explicitly in BuildConfig, or add a controller test that an OCI render with mlnxPerNode > 0 only ever carries the name detection returned.

Done in Decision 4. The loader no longer defaults the field, Build fails when MlnxPerNode > 0 and it is empty, and every caller sets it: the detected name on OCI, DefaultOCISecondaryNetwork where the OCI block is pruned or gated off, and offline. The testing plan adds a controller golden that an OCI render only ever carries the detected name.

3. **Fail closed, before any workload exists.** A failure returns a typed error from `createWorkflowForCategory` before `entry.Build`. Both callers then call `setCertificationFailed` with a new reason, `SecondaryNetworkDetectionFailed`, and emit a Warning event with the same message. Like a Workflow name collision, this is terminal: the spec is immutable, so the operator fixes the cluster (or sets `mlnxPerNode: 0`) and re-creates the Certification. The controller never renders the default name on OCI. The `nvidia.com/mlnxnics` request is never rendered without its attachment, because that would certify a transport other than the one the operator asked for.

4. **Offline render keeps a named default and says so.** `nvcrectl certification render` without `--dry-run` has no cluster to read. It renders `catalog.DefaultOCISecondaryNetwork = "network-operator/sriov-net"`, today's value, and prints one stderr note: the name is a default, and the controller detects the real network when it reconciles. `--dry-run` runs the controller's resolution and fails closed with the controller's message, because dry-run exists to predict what reconcile will do.

--dry-run runs with the user's kubeconfig, not the controller's service account, so it needs cluster-wide list on NADs. A user without it gets a Forbidden the controller would never hit, which breaks "dry-run predicts reconcile". I'd turn a Forbidden into a warning in dry-run (the controller has the grant) and keep the other outcomes fatal.

On OCI, mlnxPerNode: 0 doesn't have to mean no RDMA: ADR-088's rdmaDeviceAccess: hostPath covers clusters that expose /dev/infiniband without a device plugin. With #510 in, networkAttachments is also a fix. Worth naming both in the message.

Done. The zero-match message now lists creating a NAD for nvidia.com/mlnxnics, networkAttachments, rdmaDeviceAccess: hostPath (ADR-088), and mlnxPerNode: 0.

**Equivalent** means the same `resourceName` (true by construction) and the same `spec.config` after parsing it as JSON and removing the top-level `name` key. A config that does not parse as JSON is never equivalent to anything. Two NADs that differ only in name, namespace, whitespace or key order are equivalent. A different `type`, `ipam`, or any other top-level key makes them differ.

A NAD with an empty spec.config (Multus then reads the CNI config from disk by name) never parses, so two of them are never equivalent. Failing closed is right; please say so explicitly, since it's the one case where "same config" can't be checked at all.

Added to the equivalence definition in Decision 2: an empty spec.config cannot be compared, so it is never equivalent and fails closed. It is in the test cases too.

- several equivalent: whitespace and key order, names only, and preferring the workload namespace
- several that differ: IPAM, CNI type, and config that is not JSON
- a matching `resourceName` annotation on a different resource
- a list error

"a matching resourceName annotation on a different resource": I can't tell what this tests. The list only returns NADs, and a NAD carrying a different resourceName is already covered by the zero-match case two lines up. Can you clarify it or drop it?

Clarified: it means a NAD with the right value under the wrong key, k8s.cni.cncf.io/resourceName (the DRA attribute key) instead of k8s.v1.cni.cncf.io/resourceName. It counts as zero matches.

## Consequences

- Clusters whose RDMA network has another name or namespace attach it with no manual step. A cluster that already provides `network-operator/sriov-net` keeps attaching it, provided the NAD carries the `resourceName` annotation. NADs the Network Operator renders from `SriovNetwork` or `HostDeviceNetwork` always do. A NAD written without it now fails closed with the zero-match message, where before it attached by name.

One more group to call out: clusters that applied the workaround from #542 and created network-operator/sriov-net by hand next to the platform's NAD. If their copy differs in any top-level key, even cniVersion, they go from working to "several that differ" on upgrade. The message should tell them to delete the copy.

Added to Consequences and to the "several that differ" row: when one candidate is network-operator/sriov-net, the message says a copy created by hand as the #542 workaround should be deleted, or the network listed with networkAttachments. There is a test case for it.

## Alternatives Considered

- **An optional override field** on Certification (e.g. `secondaryNetworks`), additive in `v1alpha1`, following the `nicResourceName` pattern: the field when set, detection when unset. This is the clean remedy for "several that differ" and for a wrong pick. It is deferred to keep this change free of API changes, and left to the reviewer as a follow-up.

Agreed. ADR-103 now builds on ADR-101 instead of deferring an override field: detection runs only when no networkAttachments list is set, and the failure messages point at the list.

ADR-101 is taken by NVIDIA#510, NVIDIA#533 and NVIDIA#537, and 102 by NVIDIA#539.

Build on NVIDIA#510's networkAttachments rather than deferring an override
field: detection runs only when the resolved options set no list, and
the failure messages name the list as the fix.

From review:
- A single match in the workload namespace wins outright; the
equivalence rule applies only to candidates elsewhere, so a site under
namespaceIsolation can add its own NAD. State that the workload
  namespace is the Certification's.
- Only zero matches, differing matches, Forbidden and NoMatch are
terminal. Other list errors requeue through retryableCreateError.
- No default in the catalog loader: every caller sets the name, and
Build fails when it is empty with NICs requested.
- --dry-run warns on Forbidden, since it lists with the user's
kubeconfig rather than the controller's service account.
- Name networkAttachments and rdmaDeviceAccess: hostPath in the
zero-match message, say that an empty spec.config is never
equivalent, and hint at deleting a hand-made sriov-net copy.
- Correct the globalNamespaces note: default is implicit only while
  globalNamespaces is unset.
- List every place that names sriov-net as fact, and clarify the
  wrong-key test case.

Thanks, this covers everything from my first pass. I checked each reply against ecab62a, and the ADR reads well built on ADR-101: detection is the default and networkAttachments is the escape hatch.

Two things before merge:

  • Lines 33–35. CodeRabbit's comment holds. When the workload namespace has several matches and they're all equivalent, line 33 says to apply the rows below, but line 35 only covers equivalents when there are none in the workload namespace, so nothing says which local one to pick. Phrasing rows 34–35 in terms of "the candidates" (the local matches if there are any, otherwise all matches) fixes it, and the sorted pick and the Normal event then apply to both.
  • Merge order. This depends on #510, which is still open, and it refers to ADR-101, which isn't on main yet. Please hold the merge until #510 lands.

On your question about NVCRE creating its own NAD: not now from me. Detection plus networkAttachments covers the layouts we know about, and owning a NAD would pull CNI choices like the switchdev/SR-IOV issue into NVCRE, along with create/delete RBAC and cleanup. If a cluster turns up with no NAD for nvidia.com/mlnxnics and no way to add one, we can revisit it then.

Define the candidates as the matches in the workload namespace if there
are any, otherwise all matches, and state the one, equivalent, differ

@kaynetu thanks for the approval.

  • Lines 33–35: done in bd70bd9 with your phrasing. The rules apply to "the candidates" (the local matches if there are any, otherwise all matches), so the sorted pick and the Normal event cover both cases.
  • Merge order: agreed, I will hold this until feat(api): add networkAttachments for Multus networks paired with extended resources #510 lands, then update the branch so ADR-101 is on main first.
  • NVCRE creating its own NAD: noted. The PR description now records it as considered and deferred, to revisit only if a cluster has no NAD for nvidia.com/mlnxnics and no way to add one.

Decision 1 gates detection on an OCI target with mlnxPerNode > 0 and says that is "exactly when oci-mlnxnics-comm.yaml renders". It isn't. Eight entries pull that fragment in, all under communication/ and training/. diagnostics/dcgm-level4.yaml is not one of them: its OCI override block only flips privileged: false and pulls in no deps, and its pod is hostNetwork: true with dnsPolicy: ClusterFirstWithHostNet, so it could not carry a Multus networks annotation even if it wanted one.

mlnxPerNode still resolves to 8 for it. _lib/gpu-defaults.yaml sets h100: mlnxPerNode: 8 under defaults:, and platformOverrides.oci covers only l40s, gb200 and gb300, so OCI H100 inherits the 8. I ran the real resolution path against the node in cmd/integration/testdata/reconcile/certification-oci-dcgm/input_client_objects.yaml: detectPlatform returns oci and catalog.GPUDefaults("h100", "oci").MlnxPerNode is 8, so the gate fires. Rendering that same Certification with nvcrectl certification render --platform oci gives zero hits for mlnxnics or cncf.io/networks.

That is the problem. On a stock DGXC H100 cluster with no NAD annotated k8s.v1.cni.cncf.io/resourceName: nvidia.com/mlnxnics, certification-oci-dcgm lands on the zero row in Decision 2, and Decision 3 makes it terminal: CertificationFailed with SecondaryNetworkDetectionFailed, before any Workflow is created. A category that references no secondary network at all gets killed over one. It's a case we already have passing in the tree.

The gate wants to be about whether the resolved entry actually renders the OCI attachment, not about mlnxPerNode alone. Resolving lazily is one way: render first, detect only when the output carries an OCI k8s.v1.cni.cncf.io/networks annotation, which is the condition Decision 4 already leans on for the offline stderr note. Folding the entry's own OCI-RDMA-ness into the gate is the other.

The rest of the design holds up well. Anchoring on resourceName rather than a name convention, the spec.config equivalence rule, and the terminal versus retryable split all read right to me.

Throughout, the **workload namespace** is the Certification's namespace. The Workflow is created in `certification.Namespace`, and the Job and TrainJob follow it, so the two are always the same.

1. **Resolve the NAD from the cluster when no `networkAttachments` list is set.** Detection runs only on an OCI target whose resolved category options set no `networkAttachments` (ADR-101) and resolve `mlnxPerNode > 0`, which is exactly when `oci-mlnxnics-comm.yaml` renders. It lists NetworkAttachmentDefinitions in every namespace and keeps those annotated `k8s.v1.cni.cncf.io/resourceName: nvidia.com/mlnxnics`, the resource the OCI fragment requests. The chosen `<namespace>/<name>` reaches the template through a new `BuildConfig.OCISecondaryNetwork` field. An explicit list always wins and skips detection entirely, including its RBAC. No API change.

This gate is broader than the set of entries that render the fragment. diagnostics/dcgm-level4.yaml never pulls in oci-mlnxnics-comm.yaml, but on OCI H100 it resolves mlnxPerNode: 8 from the defaults: block in _lib/gpu-defaults.yaml, so the gate fires for it and Decision 2's zero row fails it terminally on any cluster with no matching NAD.

Gate on whether the resolved entry actually renders the OCI attachment instead: detect only when the rendered output carries an OCI k8s.v1.cni.cncf.io/networks annotation, or fold the entry's OCI-RDMA-ness into the condition.

Detection was gated on an OCI target with mlnxPerNode > 0, which is not
when oci-mlnxnics-comm.yaml renders. dcgm-level4 never includes the
fragment, and the nemotron entries include it only in their L40S/L40,
GB200 and GB300 blocks, while OCI resolves mlnxPerNode above 0 for
H100, A100, B200, B300, H200, L40S, L40 and GB300. Those categories
would have failed over a network they never reference.

Build first with a sentinel network name, and detect only when the
sentinel survives overlay application; then build again with the
detected name. A sentinel left before Create is an ordinary error.
Add the gate matrix and the no-attachment cases to the testing plan.

Cite NVIDIA#510 instead of ADR-101: ADR-101 on main is the Akamai RTX PRO

@ndipebot thanks, you're right, and the problem was wider than dcgm-level4. I rendered every entry offline on OCI for every architecture in gpu-defaults.yaml and compared where the attachment survives overlay application with where mlnxPerNode resolves above 0. The old gate fired with nothing to attach in 18 entry/architecture combinations:

  • dcgm-level4 on H100, A100, B200, B300, H200, L40S, L40 and GB300
  • nemotron5-8b and nemotron5-56b on H100, A100, B200, B300 and H200 (their OCI blocks include the fragment only for L40S/L40, GB200 and GB300, and GB200 resolves mlnxPerNode: 0)

There was no case the other way round, where a category attaches while mlnxPerNode is 0.

Fixed in 50ded10, using your first option. Decision 1 now gates on the render: the controller builds with a sentinel network name, applies and prunes overlays, and detects only if the sentinel is still in the resolved spec, remaining overrides included. Otherwise that first pass is the Workflow, with no NAD listed. When it does detect, it builds again with the detected name and checks that no sentinel is left before Create. The networkAttachments gate from #510 falls out of the same check, because it gates the fragment off. The offline stderr note uses the same check.

The testing plan now has the no-lookup cases you describe (dcgm-level4 on H100 and GB300, nemotron5-8b on H100). It also adds a gate-matrix golden over every entry and architecture on OCI, so a catalog change that starts or stops attaching shows up as a diff in review. certification-oci-dcgm stays as it is, with no NAD, and must keep passing.

Two other changes in this push. A merge from main resolves the README conflict with the Akamai ADR, which is now 101. The same commit also makes the ADR cite #510 instead of "ADR-101", since that number is taken on main.

This is fixed at the root rather than at the symptom, which is better than what I suggested. Gating on the rendered Workflow keeps the question of which categories use RDMA in the catalog instead of restating it in the controller, so the two cannot drift.

Thanks for running the full matrix. Eighteen entry and architecture combinations is a lot wider than the one case I found, and the nemotron entries resolving mlnxPerNode above 0 on H100, A100, B200, B300 and H200 while their OCI blocks only pull the fragment for L40S, L40, GB200 and GB300 is exactly the kind of thing an input-only gate gets wrong.

I checked the new factual claims against the catalog at this head and they hold. The sentinel round trip is sound: Build is pure in its config, so the second pass differs only in that string, and failing closed on a leftover sentinel through WorkflowValidationFailed is the right direction to fail. Keeping certification-oci-dcgm as a must-keep-passing case and adding the gate-matrix golden means a catalog change that starts or stops attaching shows up as a diff in review.

…add up, name the Certification-level failure

ADR-101 went to the Akamai ADR (101-akamai-rtxpro6000-tcp) on main,
and open PRs claim 102 (NVIDIA#539) and 103 (NVIDIA#543). The network attachments
ADR moves to the next free number, 104:
docs/designs/104-network-attachments.md, its README row, and the ADR
links in the Certification and WorkloadRun API references.

Follow-ups from the NVIDIA#510 approval:

- Decision 2 and the networkAttachments API docs say outright that
entries add to a NIC request the platform already rendered, so a site
whose Multus networks are the platform's own NICs sets mlnxPerNode: 0
to request only the listed entries (two entries on
nvidia.com/mlnxnics on TogetherAI otherwise request 10).
- Decision 3, the API docs and the CheckResolvedNetworkAttachments
comment say that a hostPath conflict found on a category's merged
options fails the whole Certification as WorkflowValidationFailed,
naming the category, not the category alone.
- The ADR's known-gaps list marks where the transport-fallback (#TBD1)
and allocatable (#TBD2) follow-up issues will be linked.

…ended resources (#510)

* feat(api): add networkAttachments for Multus networks paired with extended resources

Add networkAttachments ([]{network, resourceName, count}) to CategoryOptions
and WorkloadRunSpec so a site with one extended resource and one
NetworkAttachmentDefinition per rail (for example Spectrum-X RoCE) can attach
the workers to its east-west fabric.

Each entry adds its network to the worker pod's k8s.v1.cni.cncf.io/networks
annotation in list order and requests count units (default 1) of its
resourceName on the worker container, so the n-th network pairs with the
n-th resource. The MPI launcher gets neither. The list owns the NIC wiring:
it is mutually exclusive with nicResourceName, skips NIC auto-detection, and
on OCI replaces the default sriov-net attachments and their mlnxnics request.
CEL rules enforce the entry patterns, a 16-entry cap, and the exclusions with
nicResourceName, rdmaDeviceAccess: hostPath and mlnxPerNode: 0;
readCertification and readWorkloadRun mirror them offline.

nvcrectl certification run gains --network-attachments
network=resource[:count],... and the zipped --multus-networks /
--extended-resources pair, which errors on a length mismatch.
categoryOptionsSuffix gains a -net<N>-<hash8> token so categories that differ
only in their attachments get distinct Workflows; it defers to #430.

Design in ADR-101.

Fixes #400

Signed-off-by: Anpoo Sivanadi <sivanadi08@gmail.com>

* fix(api): drop networkAttachments count; one entry is one interface

Review on #510 (kaynetu): an entry attaches one interface, so count > 1
reserved devices that nothing wires. A second interface on a network is a
second entry, and entries that share a resourceName already add up.

Remove NetworkAttachment.count and EffectiveCount(). Each entry now
requests one unit of its resourceName. --network-attachments takes
network=resource entries and rejects the old network=resource:count form
with a pointer to repeating the entry. The Workflow name token hashes the
(network, resourceName) pairs in list order, so the goldens that carry a
net token get new names.

Signed-off-by: Anpoo Sivanadi <sivanadi08@gmail.com>

* fix(api): allow mlnxPerNode: 0 with networkAttachments; scope the NIC replacement to OCI

Review on #510 (kaynetu): "the list owns the NIC wiring" only held on OCI.
Azure, TogetherAI and Forge still render nvidia.com/mlnxnics next to the
attachments, nscale renders its rdma claim, and the mlnxPerNode: 0 rule
blocked the one setting that drops those requests.

Keep the OCI gate (sriov-net is itself a Multus default, so the list
replaces it) and do not gate the other platforms: they reach their
InfiniBand fabric through those device-plugin or DRA requests and their
NCCL environment names the HCAs, so dropping the request whenever a list is
set would break the run. Instead remove the mlnxPerNode: 0 CEL rule from
CategoryOptions and WorkloadRunSpec and from the offline mirrors, so a user
who wants only the listed networks sets mlnxPerNode: 0 as on any other run
(ADR-087).

Tests: the two error cases become a WorkloadRun admission case that is
accepted, and two TogetherAI H100 render goldens pin the request kept beside
the list and dropped by mlnxPerNode: 0.

Signed-off-by: Anpoo Sivanadi <sivanadi08@gmail.com>

* fix(controller): check networkAttachments exclusions on the merged options

Review on #510 (kaynetu): the CRD rules and readCertification read one
options block at a time, so rdmaDeviceAccess: hostPath at the spec level
and a list in a category (or the reverse) passed both and rendered a
privileged pod with the /dev/infiniband mount and the attachment.

Add controller.CheckResolvedNetworkAttachments and call it on each
category's ResolveOptions result in createWorkflowForCategory and in
renderCertification. The category fails (WorkflowValidationFailed on the
controller, an error from render) with the way out in the message:
devicePlugin in a category that inherits hostPath with a list, or
nicResourceName in a category that inherits the list and needs hostPath.
hostPath is not cleared in ResolveOptions the way nicResourceName is,
because it changes how every container reaches the RDMA devices and
dropping it silently would run a configuration nobody asked for.

Tests: a controller golden for both directions and the two ways out, and
two render-error goldens, one of them the review's exact spec.

Signed-off-by: Anpoo Sivanadi <sivanadi08@gmail.com>

* fix(controller): add a nic token to the Workflow name when a category sets nicResourceName

Review on #510 (kaynetu): a category's nicResourceName replaces a
spec-level networkAttachments list, so a category with no options (which
inherits the list) and one that sets only nicResourceName attach to
different fabrics but both rendered as c3-communication-nccl-all-4092a,
and the second would have adopted the first's Workflow.

categoryOptionsSuffix now adds nic<hash8> (SHA-256 of the resource name,
hashed like env since the name carries a slash) whenever a category sets
nicResourceName. This also separates two categories that name different
NIC resources, which collided before this PR too.

Categories that already set nicResourceName get a new Workflow name. An
in-flight category is unaffected, since its Workflow is found through the
recorded workflowRef; the renamed goldens are the two per-category NIC
render cases and the certification-onprem-gb300-nccl reconcile case.

Tests: a controller golden with the review's spec plus a third category on
a different resource.

Signed-off-by: Anpoo Sivanadi <sivanadi08@gmail.com>

* docs(workloadrun): state that spec.overrides apply after networkAttachments; add the missing tests

Review on #510 (kaynetu): the WorkloadRun comment said nothing later
competes with the attachments, but the user's spec.overrides are applied
when the Workflow reconciles, after the attachments, so an override that
sets k8s.v1.cni.cncf.io/networks wins there while Certification's list is
final.

Keep that order and document it. spec.overrides is the last word on every
other WorkloadRun field too, so making the list the one exception would be
the surprise; Certification has no user overrides, which is the whole of
the difference. Narrow the controller comment to platform overrides, say
the same in pkg/workloadrun, and add it to the API reference.

Tests the review asked for:
- pkg/controller: a golden for the WorkloadRun controller path
(buildWorkflowSpecWithWarning plus the Workflow's override pass): NIC
detection skipped on an on-prem B300 that would otherwise pick rdma/ib,
Azure's mlnxnics request kept beside the list and dropped by
mlnxPerNode: 0, and a user override replacing the networks annotation.
- pkg/platform: a golden for ApplyNetworkAttachmentsToDependencies: the
catalog annotation replaced with siblings kept, entries on one resource
adding up, the launcher untouched, the worker container by name else
the first, and byte-for-byte pass-through for an empty list and a
  non-TrainingRuntime.

Signed-off-by: Anpoo Sivanadi <sivanadi08@gmail.com>

* docs(adr-101): correct how Multus matches networks to resources; record the gaps

Review on #510 (kaynetu): the ADR and the API comments said the n-th
network is wired to a device of the n-th requested resource. Multus does
not pair by position: each NetworkAttachmentDefinition names its resource
in k8s.v1.cni.cncf.io/resourceName, Multus takes the device allocated for
that resource, and resources.limits keeps no order. What has to hold is
that every attached network's resource is requested often enough.

Restate that in the ADR context, the NetworkAttachment and field doc
comments, the API and CLI references and the flag help, and say that an
entry's resourceName must be the resource its NAD declares. Order still
decides which network becomes net1..netN, which is why the name token
hashes in list order; the rationale now says so.

The ADR also gains:
- "derive the resources from the NADs" as a considered alternative,
rejected for now for the NAD RBAC, the Multus CRD dependency and
  offline render, with a compatible follow-up noted;
- "gate every platform's NIC fragment" as a rejected alternative;
- decision 3 scoped to OCI, the merged-options check, the nic name token
  and WorkloadRun override precedence, matching the code;
- known gaps under Consequences: a wrong resourceName is not caught,
transport fallback to NET/Socket can still pass, and a resource no
node advertises leaves the pods Pending until the timeout.

* fix(platform): add networkAttachments to a platform-rendered resource request

applyNetworkAttachmentsToJob wrote each resource's attachment count over
the worker's limits and requests, so on a platform that already renders
the same resource (nvidia.com/mlnxnics: 8 on TogetherAI or Azure) one
entry on it shrank the request to 1. ADR-101 says the list adds to that
request.

The count is now added to the quantity already rendered: the limit when
set, else the request, written to both so they stay equal. A quantity
that cannot be parsed fails the call and leaves the dependency as it was.
Where nothing was rendered for the resource, as on OCI with a list (the
default mlnxnics fragment is gated off) or with mlnxPerNode: 0, the
entries' count is the whole request, as before.

The one helper serves the Certification transform stage and both
WorkloadRun paths. New pkg/platform goldens cover 8 plus one entry (9),
the same resource twice on top of 8 (10), a limit-only request and no
platform request (1); a unit test covers the quantity forms; render
goldens pin TogetherAI H100 (9) and OCI L40S (1) on nvidia.com/mlnxnics.
ADR-101 and the API references state the addition.

* docs(adr-104): renumber the network attachments ADR, say NIC entries add up, name the Certification-level failure

ADR-101 went to the Akamai ADR (101-akamai-rtxpro6000-tcp) on main,
and open PRs claim 102 (#539) and 103 (#543). The network attachments
ADR moves to the next free number, 104:
docs/designs/104-network-attachments.md, its README row, and the ADR
links in the Certification and WorkloadRun API references.

Follow-ups from the #510 approval:

CRDs regenerated with make manifests.

* fix(platform): add networkAttachments to platform override requests

Review follow-ups for #510 (ndipebot).

Ordering: a WorkloadRun's platform overrides are not applied when the
Workflow spec is built. They travel in spec.overrides and the Workflow
controller applies them later, replacing scalars, so Azure's
nvidia.com/mlnxnics: 8 replaced 8 plus one networkAttachments entry and
the run asked for 8. The new platform.ApplyNetworkAttachmentsToOverrides
raises every platform override patch that already requests one of the
listed resources by the same count, and writes the networks annotation
into any patch that sets one. It runs after BuildOverrides in both the
controller and BuildWorkflowSpec, together with the runtime write that
moves there too. Azure H100 plus one mlnxnics entry now requests 9 on
workloadrun render, the WorkloadRun controller and certification render.
The user's spec.overrides are appended untouched and still win.

Tests:
- render-network-attachments (azure, togetherai),
  workloadrun-network-attachments/azure-h100-same-resource-adds and
  certification-render-network-attachments/azure-h100-same-resource-adds
  pin the 9, plus TestApplyNetworkAttachmentsToOverrides.
- read-workloadrun error cases: upper-case network, a kubernetes.io/
resource, 17 entries, an empty list, and a list with nicResourceName.
- reconcile/certification-network-attachments-merged-hostpath: a category
list merged with a spec-level rdmaDeviceAccess: hostPath fails the whole
Certification with WorkflowValidationFailed and creates no Workflow.
- TestNewRunCommandValidation: --cert-file with --network-attachments,
  --multus-networks, --extended-resources, and the pair.
- certification-render-network-attachments/onprem-b300-skips-nic-detection
and TestApplyWRNICDetection pin the NIC-detection skip for an explicit
list. The WorkloadRun dry-run gate moves into applyWRNICDetection.

ADR-104 Decision 3 now says a conflict fails the whole Certification, and
Decision 6 describes the override handling. The #TBD placeholders are
gone.

Two goldens from this PR are refreshed for main: the build-workflow-spec
mpi-network-attachments override count (Akamai's override from #537) and
the certification-onprem-b300-multirail worker sshd script (#528).

* fix(platform): pick the override worker container as the runtime path does

applyNetworkAttachmentsToPatchJob matched the worker container only by the
exact name "node", while the runtime path falls back to the first container.
A platform override on a replicatedJob without a "node" container could then
keep its own count on the same container the runtime had raised. Both paths
now go through workerContainer, which also returns nil for an empty list.

Reword the "compute every sum before writing any" comments: the annotation
or the resources maps may already be touched on error, and what keeps the
dependency intact is that the caller returns before re-marshalling.

Add the override case worker-container-by-name-else-first, and say in
ADR-104 that the override path picks the worker as the render step does.

NVIDIA#510 merged as ADR-104, so cite it by number and describe this change as
building on its files on main rather than landing after it. Reword the
namespaceIsolation option so it is clear that Decision 2 considers only
the workload-namespace matches.

@kaynetu @ndipebot as discussed, this was waiting on #510, which has now merged as ADR-104. I merged main into the branch and updated the ADR in e3ef898. The changes since your approvals:

The design itself is unchanged. The new push dismissed your approvals, so could you take another look when you have a moment?
