Fixes AUREO-1483

The validator batch from the 2026-10-16 import pipeline review: the
rules review kept restating by hand, closed in pnpm validate and
pnpm dataset:audit, plus the id guard, the data-read guard, a faster
build and a release job that signs without running anything.

Summary

  • Duplicates are a group, reported once. W134 when two entries in a
collection share a manufacturer and a normalised name, W135 when they
share a url (read without scheme, www. or a trailing slash), on
the first file of each group naming the others; dataset:audit lists
the same groups from the one implementation in
scripts/lib/duplicates.ts. Advisory because main carries 66 name
groups and 149 url groups today.
  • Ids are checked. id is on all five schemas as the 21-character
nanoid assign-ids writes (E129), unique across every collection
(E207), and check-id-immutability fails a deletion or a rename that
drops one unless the PR carries the retirement label (rewritten on
    --name-status -M, with a temp-repo test suite).
  • Every data read goes through the guard. utils.ts lists with
    withFileTypes and isFile(); validate.ts, assign-ids.ts,
validate-translations.ts and generate-patch.ts lose their private
    readers.
  • Prose fields are strings (MarkdownSchema is z.string()), with
W136 on the 33 entries that still carry a list, and
    normalizeToMarkdownString is gone.
  • Connections close. schema/io-connections.yaml gains sc
(optical MADI on an SC duplex connector); an unknown connection is
E130 and a maxConnections above one on a single jack is E131; W120
is deleted. The racks fast runner closes its schema to the same
vocabulary in the AUREO-1481 PR, which should merge first.
  • Price staleness is reported per manufacturer by dataset:audit
(no asOf or older than 18 months).
  • Build. Five FTS id columns are UNINDEXED (Studio's MATCH and
bm25 weights verified against the built file), the stamp is the HEAD
commit date, and validate-urls uses execFileSync.
  • Release splits into version, a read-only build, and
sign-and-release, which installs nothing, verifies the artifact set
and its sha, and holds the key under umask 077 with a mktemp and
    trap.
  • CLAUDE.md gains a "Duplicates and Ids" section.

Counts on main

E129 0, E130 0 (two W121 fixed by sc), E131 0, E207 0, W134 66
groups, W135 149 groups, W136 33.

Test plan

  • pnpm validate exit 0 (only W125, W126, W127, W131, W133 to W136)
  • pnpm test 783 tests
  • pnpm typecheck, pnpm lint, pnpm format:check,
    pnpm validate:translations, pnpm build
  • CI green, including the three-job release workflow on the next tag

Not done: a per-diff price warning in validate (no diff context
there), and byte-reproducible builds (created_at and applied_at
still read datetime('now')).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Validation

    • Entry IDs must follow the required format and be unique across collections.
    • Unknown I/O connectors and entries that combine multiple physical jacks now fail validation; SC fibre connectors are supported.
    • Prose fields must be text, and hardware and accessory entries are flagged when descriptions are missing.
    • Validation reports duplicate names and URLs within a collection.
  • Dataset Audit

    • Audits now report duplicate URLs and potentially stale or undated prices, alongside duplicate names.
  • Documentation

    • Updated validation guidance explains the checks and their severity.

E129 pins id to the 21-char nanoid shape and E207
finds an id shared across collections. W121 and
W128 are promoted to E130 and E131 now the corpus
is clean (sc, the optical MADI connector, joins
io-connections). W134/W135 warn on a name or url
shared within a collection, from one grouping in
lib/duplicates.ts that dataset-audit reuses in
place of the always-zero broken-compatible check.
W136 warns on hardware and accessories with no
description, and prose fields are strings only.
The audit also reports stale prices per maker.
Every code has a VALIDATION_ERRORS.md entry; E304
and W124 to W127 gain the entries they lacked.

getYamlFiles lists regular files off the dirent,
and the six CI reads that bypassed readRegularFile
go through it; assign-ids drops its private copy.
check-id-immutability reads MRDT with -M, so a
rename with a new id, a deletion and a file turned
symlink no longer pass; an id may leave only under
the retirement label, which validate.yml passes as
PR_LABELS. validate-urls shells out through an
argv array.

The nanoid is a join key, never a search term, so
every *_fts table stores it UNINDEXED; the column
and the bm25 weights Studio passes are unchanged.
updated_at is the HEAD commit date so one commit

Split by what each job holds: version runs the
changesets action, build installs and builds with
a read-only token and hands dist/ on as an
artifact, sign-and-release installs nothing,
checks the artifact, verifies minisign by digest
and signs under umask 077 with the key in a
mktemp file.

Walkthrough

The pull request updates catalog validation and auditing, adds ID immutability checks, restructures the release workflow into separate jobs, and changes SQLite build metadata and full-text indexing.

Changes

Catalog validation and integrity

Layer / File(s) Summary
Validation rules and error catalog
scripts/validate.ts, scripts/lib/entry-id.ts, scripts/lib/error-codes.ts, schema/*, docs/VALIDATION_ERRORS.md, CLAUDE.md, scripts/__tests__/validate.test.ts
Validation now checks 21-character IDs, known I/O connections, collapsed-jack entries, string-only prose fields, and missing hardware or accessory descriptions. Duplicate IDs are checked across collections. Documentation and connection schemas describe the updated codes and accepted values.
Duplicate and stale-price reporting
scripts/lib/duplicates.ts, scripts/validate.ts, scripts/dataset-audit.ts, .github/workflows/dataset-audit.yml, scripts/__tests__/duplicates.test.ts, scripts/__tests__/dataset-audit.test.ts, docs/VALIDATION_ERRORS.md, .coderabbit.yaml, CLAUDE.md
Validation and the audit share normalized name and URL grouping. The audit reports duplicate URLs and stale prices by manufacturer instead of broken compatibleWith references. The audit workflow includes duplicate-URL groups in its issue report.
ID immutability checks
scripts/check-id-immutability.ts, .github/workflows/validate.yml, scripts/__tests__/check-id-immutability.test.ts, scripts/validate.ts, docs/VALIDATION_ERRORS.md
The check detects ID changes and removals, including across renames and deletions. It also checks I/O port keys and accepts ID removal when the pull request has the retirement label.
YAML file discovery and reads
scripts/lib/utils.ts, scripts/assign-ids.ts, scripts/generate-patch.ts, scripts/validate-translations.ts, scripts/__tests__/utils.test.ts
YAML discovery now includes only regular .yaml and .yml files. Several scripts use shared utilities to discover and read YAML files.

Release pipeline

Layer / File(s) Summary
Build, verify, sign, and release
.github/workflows/release.yml
The workflow separates version detection, building, and signing and release into jobs. It validates and uploads build artifacts, verifies the artifact contents and checksums, and uses a temporary signing-key file with exit cleanup.

Database output

Layer / File(s) Summary
Database timestamp and search indexes
scripts/build-sqlite.ts, scripts/schema.sql
The database build uses the latest Git commit timestamp when available, with a current-time fallback. The five FTS5 tables retain IDs as join keys but no longer index them for text search.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to b3bbc

Validation, audit and release changes look sound. One workflow gap remains: adding the retirement label does not re-run the ID check, so an intentional ID removal stays blocked until another push. Two small documentation inconsistencies are also open. These are bounded follow-ups rather than merge blockers.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to b3bbc

Separating builds from signing reduces signing-key exposure, but a path mismatch at the new handoff prevents signed catalog updates from being released. This is a release-wide availability problem, not a demonstrated privilege escalation.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: The new build-to-signer integrity gate uses an incompatible checksum path contract. Generation records dist/catalog.sqlite and dist/catalog-index.json, but verification runs inside dist and consequently looks beneath dist/dist. Normal build output cannot reach signing or publication, blocking the signed catalog update channel. This verification failure is introduced by the job split; the base generated the same manifests without this consumer step.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The sensitive release authority covers the SQLite catalog and web index published from main. A signing-boundary failure can affect the catalog distribution channel and consumers trusting those signatures, rather than only one catalog entry.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The signer receives build output through a named artifact and uses a fresh checkout without dependency installation or catalog build commands. Minisign is digest-verified before key material is introduced; signing creates the key file under umask 077 and registers exit cleanup.
  • observed — The versioning job still installs dependencies with repository-write permissions. That authority predates this PR, so the split reduces direct signing-key exposure without establishing that compromised dependency code has no repository-write path.
  • observed — The SQLite builder retains compatibility normalization for legacy prose arrays, but its HTML renderer escapes raw HTML and rejects unsafe link and image destinations. The stricter prose validator therefore does not replace the existing output-side controls.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The introduced checksum defect fails closed before the signing-key step and release publication. Its demonstrated consequence is loss of signed-update availability, not publication of unchecked output or disclosure of signing credentials.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define one checksum filename namespace for the build-to-signer handoff and align generation with verification, preserving the exact-file whitelist and fail-closed integrity gate.

Release runs only on a push to main, so the
checksum bug from #952 was first exercised by a
real release. The build job moves into a
reusable release-build.yml and the artifact
check into a composite action; release.yml and
a new release-dry-run.yml both call them, so
the rehearsal cannot drift from the release. No
secrets in the dry run.
