Shortcut/mobile-policy review of d0d2002 (static review of the active-pane path, not a full-PR approval):
Routing global Mod+Shift actions through the selected/active pane is the right boundary. Keep the existing xterm app-shortcut interception and do not add app actions to the mobile terminal key bar.
Two source-level issues need coverage and fixes before merge:
- dropIn/chime suppress alerts for splitRef.current.other even when the viewport is narrow and splitOn is false. Split A|B, shrink below the split breakpoint, then let the now-hidden half need input or finish: it is still treated as visible and receives no in-app alert/chime. Suppress for the other half only while it is actually shown, and add a narrow-viewport regression.
- onFocusCapture activates a half through applySplit, which sets autoSelected(false). That true-to-false transition triggers terminal/composer focusing, so a keyboard user tabbing onto a button in the inactive half can lose that focus. Preserve the element that initiated focus-based activation and test tabbing into the inactive tab strip/composer controls. This path was traced in source, not reproduced in a browser during this review.
GitHub currently reports CONFLICTING/DIRTY, there are no required CI check runs on this head, and the output_stalled/role replay review thread remains unresolved. Refresh against main, resolve that thread, and obtain Fast checks plus Integration and browser on the refreshed head.
Keep this as a separate split-view PR. #480 also changes tab onDragStart; whichever lands second must keep both reorder and split drag payloads.
## Change Keep app shortcuts as configurable Mod+Shift bindings and keep the mobile key bar a terminal input device, not an app-action toolbar. - Resolve command-palette hints from the saved mapping; disabled shortcuts have no hint. - Recognize non-Latin physical letter keys outside IME composition, sharing the terminal's physical-key convention and keeping Latin-layout letters intact. - Mark a narrow set of known browser/OS reservations and explain the currently selected conflict without rejecting or silently changing saved bindings. The list is intentionally not exhaustive. - Keep shortcut selects readable on narrow screens and explain global versus focus-local keys and device-local settings (English/Korean/Japanese/Chinese). - Start fresh/restored mobile bars with Esc, Tab and Ctrl+C. Preserve explicit custom layouts, empty layouts and legacy extra-key ordering. - Update the guide, design rules and existing CI browser regression. No HTTP/WS changes or new demo transport behavior. This does not replace #480 (tab reordering) or #602 (split view). Their shortcut paths were reviewed separately; both currently conflict with main and lack the required CI runs. Review comments document the remaining checks/fixes rather than closing either PR as superseded. ## Validation On Linux, Bun 1.4.2 / Node 24.18.0: - `bun run check fast` on the rebased branch: workflow syntax, generated types, typecheck, build and unit suite pass; **1853 pass, 6 skip, 0 fail**. - `bun scripts/key-bar-customization-demo-regression.ts`: PASS. Rebinding/Off/reset/persistence and palette hints, reservation warning without rewriting the setting, non-Latin shortcut with no terminal input, IME guard, Ctrl+C visibility at 320/390px, legacy/custom layouts and held modifiers. - `bun scripts/settings-pages-demo-regression.ts`: PASS. All settings pages at 320/390px, Back/Forward/Escape and responsive history behavior. - `bun run check run bun scripts/terminal-input-regression.ts`: PASS on an isolated herdr, including input readiness, drafts, IME and shortcut interception. - UI evidence below uses fictional demo fixtures only. Non-Latin browser events are synthetic; physical phones, macOS and real non-Latin hardware layouts were not tested. Production build retains the existing large-chunk warning. | Shortcut settings | Default terminal keys | | --- | --- | | | |

Thanks for the quick turnaround on the 10-08 review. Both of its points are fixed as you describe. I reviewed what changed since that review (d0d2002 → d988e9b: the rebase, d6d4e27 and d988e9b), merged the head locally onto main at v0.4.2 (b82584d), ran the checks below, and drove the split in a real browser on an isolated herdr session. This is a comment, not a request for changes.
Merge state
- It merges with v0.4.2 without a conflict, but the CHANGELOG entry moves with it: v0.4.2 was cut after this branch, and in the merged file your entry sits under
## [0.4.2]→### Added(line 13), a release that does not contain it. It needs to move under## [Unreleased]. - "Fast checks" and "Integration and browser" have not run on this head. Only CodeRabbit ran, and every review thread is resolved.
The points of the last review
- Alerts for a hidden half: fixed (
splitShownRef). Your regression checks it at 700px. - Focus on a Tab into the inactive half: fixed (
applySplit(…, keepFocus)). Your regression checks it. - Roles per connection (d988e9b): each half keeps its own role. I read the change and your forged
role-acktest covers it.
Findings
High. A finished upload moves the keyboard to the other half (src/components/PaneTerminal.tsx:1031, through src/App.tsx:1065). I reproduced this in a real browser:
- Split two shell panes, left and right; the left one is active.
- Drop a file on the left terminal. I held
/api/pane/imagewithpage.routeso the upload stays in flight. - Click the right terminal. The right half is active and has the focus.
- Let the upload finish.
uploadBatchpastes the path into the left terminal and callsterm.focus(). The focus lands in the left half, itsonFocusCapturecallsactivateSlot, and the left half becomes active again.
Result: after upload finished: left active=true, focus in left. Whatever the user types next, Enter included, goes to the left pane while they are looking at the right one. Before this PR only one terminal was mounted, and uploadBatch returned early once the user had left the pane (paneRef.current !== pane). With two halves both stay mounted, so that check passes.
Fix: focus the terminal after an upload only when the focus is still inside its own half (or nowhere), and do not let a programmatic focus activate a half; onFocusCapture could require a user-initiated focus. The same applies to term.focus() after a dropped text (PaneTerminal.tsx, the onDrop text branch), and to any delayed restoreFocus.
Medium. Closing the other half moves the surviving pane to a new connection (src/App.tsx:1043, src/App.tsx:719). This is traced in the code, not reproduced. When the right half (slot b) is active and the user closes the left half, or narrows the window below the split width, slot b stops rendering and the active pane is drawn in slot a. Slot b's PaneTerminal unmounts: it detaches its socket and suspends its pending messages (PaneTerminal.tsx:1315). Slot a attaches the same pane on its own socket. A message queued for the agent's next turn was owned by slot b's connection, so it is held for review instead of being sent automatically. That is safe (AGENTS.md: automatic delivery needs the original connection), but the user never left the pane, so it reads as a lost send. The terminal also re-attaches with a fresh replay. Keeping the surviving slot mounted when the split closes would avoid both.
Low. Fixed sleeps in the new regression (scripts/split-view-regression.ts:62, :65, :74, :80, :85, :132). AGENTS.md asks for bounded waits on a condition, never fixed sleeps. The "no alert" checks need a positive signal to wait on (for example, wait until the sidebar shows the blocked state, then for one more status round-trip) rather than 1.2 s.
Bridge invariants
I checked the ones server/AGENTS.md names against this diff; there is no server change:
- Two attaches of one pane:
dockPanerefuses to put the same pane in both halves (sameTarget,src/lib/split.ts:73,:78,:84). Two different panes from one browser are two sockets on the same server, which is how the server already serves two tabs. - Resize ownership: each half's terminal is an interact client of its own pane and resizes only that pane, so the two halves never resize the same pane.
- Scrollback: no change to the xterm options;
scrollback: 0holds. - Roles: per slot, as above.
What I ran
On the merged tree (b82584d + d988e9b):
bun run check fast(workflow lint, generated types, typecheck, build, unit suite): passed. Output: exit 0.bun run check run bun scripts/ui-regression.ts(it runssplit-view-regression.ts): 89 PASS lines, 0 failures, exit 0, including your four split checks (alerts only while drawn, Tab into the inactive half, each half's role, drag/press/close).- The reproduction above, as a Playwright script on an isolated herdr session through
bun run check run. - An adversarial review pass with another agent (Codex) over the diff. Its two findings are the High (which I then reproduced) and the Medium (which I traced).
For the owner to decide
- The High is introduced by this PR and makes a keystroke land in a pane the user is not looking at. In my view it should be fixed before a merge.
- Whether the Medium (a queued send held after closing the other half) should be fixed here or accepted as a known limit.
- #429 (file viewer) moves
--chat-wfrom the terminal stack todocument.documentElement, which assumes onePaneTerminalis mounted. With this PR there are two, so the halves would overwrite each other's chat width, and closing one would remove it from both. Whichever of the two lands second has to carry that width differently; I said the same on #429. - #480 also changes the tab's
onDragStart; whichever lands second has to keep both the reorder and the split drag data (as said on 10-08).
The file viewer renders a Markdown file as a Preview, with Show source for its text, and shows every text file as highlighted code with line numbers (the highlighter from the chat, devswha#665's HighlightedCode with a gutter and wrapping). Raw opens the file in a new tab, Download saves it, Copy copies it; a file cut short says so in its size, with a warning sign that also marks a file too long to color or to preview. Nothing a file holds can freeze the tab: the viewer loads at most 256 KB, the Preview is parsed in a worker with a 2 s budget (src/lib/markdownPreview.ts, on src/lib/offThread.ts) and opens the source when it runs over, and a Preview that cannot be drawn says so and offers its source. A Markdown preview takes the chat's font size and font, and by default the chat lane of the pane that opened it: src/lib/chatLane.ts writes --chat-w on each pane's stack (as PaneTerminal did) and on the viewer from the pane it was opened from, so two panes side by side (devswha#602) keep their own. Settings → Chat → File viewer: wrap long lines, Markdown width.

Low: fixed sleeps. None are left in

On a desktop a tab or a workspace row dragged over the pane area shows its two halves; dropped on one, its pane opens there beside the pane already open, and the two share the area (the sidebar's width aside). The halves are two slots that keep their panes and terminals when the active half changes or they trade sides, so a click never attaches a terminal again. The selected pane is the active half's: the header, the palette and the shortcuts act on it, and a press or focus in the other half makes that one active. Each half has a bar with its pane's title, its own chat/terminal lens and a close, and its own tab strip. The split is kept across reloads, ends when either pane closes, and a narrower window shows the active half alone. Alerts skip a pane open in either half.
…lf; a half closes The step runs after the checks that take the newest WebSocket for the page's own connection: the second half opens one of its own.
…eader The other half's terminal runs with no-op callbacks, and a terminal reported its connection only when it changed. Made active, an already connected half never told the header, which could keep the previous half's state until a reconnect. PaneTerminal now reports its connection again when its callback changes, and replays the last role acknowledgement the same way. App's callback is stable, so that happens on activation, not on every render; the activation path no longer sets the header live by itself.
…tall told on activation - In-app alerts and the chime skipped the other half's pane whenever a split existed, also while a narrow window showed the active half alone. They skip it now only while that half is drawn. - A focus moving into the inactive half (a Tab onto one of its buttons) made the half active with autoSelected false, so its terminal or composer took the keyboard from the control the focus went to. A focus-made activation keeps autoSelected, and with it the focus; a press still activates as before. - A terminal that reported output_stalled while its callbacks were no-ops tells the live ones once its half is active, as it does its connection, so the header says disconnected rather than reconnecting. A connection made again clears it. scripts/split-view-regression.ts covers the first two on a page of its own (the other half's socket would otherwise be taken for the page's own): each fails without its change.
App held one role for both halves and passed it to both terminals, each its own socket. A watch-only answer on the active half's socket set that role, and the other half's open socket was then asked to watch too (setMode observe) and stayed read-only once made active. The role is now kept per slot, each set by its own terminal's ack, and the second half's role starts over when the split ends. A check in scripts/split-view-regression.ts forges a watch answer on the active half's socket and expects the other half to stay interactive; it fails without the change.
…ts in its regression - An upload that finished, or a dropped text, focused its terminal even after the user had moved to the other half, and that focus made its half active again: the next keys went to a pane the user was not looking at. A terminal now takes the keyboard by itself only when the focus is nowhere or already in its own half (mayTakeFocus), and a focus makes a half active only right after a key (a Tab), never when the app's own code moves it. - Closing the other half, or a window too narrow for both, drew the surviving pane in slot a: the active half's terminal unmounted and its pane attached again on the other slot's socket, so a message queued on its connection was held for review. The single pane now stays in the slot it was in (soloSlot), and a later drop opens beside it from there. - The changelog entry is under Unreleased again. - scripts/split-view-regression.ts waits only on conditions: a check that no alert came waits for a later status the app shows after it, and two frames stand for a render's effects. It adds the upload focus and the surviving half's connection; each fails without its change.

) ## Change herdr can move a pane to another tab, a new tab or another workspace (`pane.move`), and the web had no way to do it. This adds **Move pane to…** to the tab strip's tab menu and the sidebar's workspace row menu. The item opens the same row menu again under the same button (a popover on a desktop, the bottom sheet on a phone) listing **New tab**, the workspace's other tabs, every other workspace (the pane lands in a new tab there) and **New workspace**. A pick posts once to the new `POST /api/pane/move`. - `shared/protocol.ts`: `MovePaneRequest` / `MovePaneDestination` (herdr's `PaneMoveDestination` with the `type` the generated union widens to a string spelled out) and `PaneMoved` (= `PaneMoveResult`), with the route in the catalogue comment. `scripts/generate-protocol-types.ts` adds the `PaneMoveParams` / `PaneMoveResult` roots and the generated file is regenerated (not hand-edited). - `server/pane-move.ts` + `POST /api/pane/move` in `server/index.ts`: the body is checked here (`missing_pane_id`, `invalid_destination`, `invalid_focus`, plus the usual `invalid_json` / `invalid_body`) because herdr answers a malformed destination with a bare `invalid_request`; a `tab` destination's `split` defaults to `right`; `focus` defaults to false so herdr's own focus stays where it was. herdr's own refusals come back in the error envelope (`pane_not_found`, `tab_not_found`, `workspace_not_found`). The answer is herdr's `PaneMoveResult` whole: `pane` (under a **new** `pane_id` when the pane changed workspace), `previous_pane_id`, `created_tab` / `created_workspace`, `closed_tab_id` / `closed_workspace_id`, `changed: false, reason: "same_tab"` for a no-op. The old id's transcript cache is forgotten. `paneMove` in `server/herdr/client.ts` unwraps `{ move_result }`. - `server/machine-api.ts`: `pane/move` joins the proxy allowlist, so it works on a remote PC and through the `/api/machines/local/` alias. - `site/demo/transport.ts`: the demo answers `/api/pane/move` with the same bookkeeping its close/create handlers do (tabs, counts, automatic labels, layouts, focus), a new id when the pane crosses workspaces, and a running mock turn resolved to the new id. - `src/components/MovePaneMenu.tsx` (+ `.css`, tokens only), `src/lib/paneMove.ts`: the places (`paneMoveTargets`) and what follows a pane to its new id (`carryPaneRecords`: the lens, the composer draft, the terminal draft). `actions.paneMoved` in `App.tsx` carries them and re-selects the new id **only when the moved pane was the selected one on that PC**: a move made elsewhere (the TUI, another client) never moves the selection, the old id just leaves the snapshot and the existing fallback picks herdr's focus. Held queues and pending sends stay under the old id (they name a server lease), documented in `src/AGENTS.md`. - i18n ko/ja/zh, CHANGELOG (Unreleased → Added), DESIGN.md (row menu, tab menu, the new menu's head), `server/AGENTS.md` / `src/AGENTS.md` rows, `scripts/ui-regression.ts` menu lists. Measured on herdr 0.9.3: a move inside a workspace keeps the pane id (the tab changes; an emptied tab closes), a move into another workspace or a new one gives a new id; both are covered by the contract test. Out of scope on purpose: tab reordering (#480) and the split view (#602); the UI never exposes `split` / `target_pane_id` / `ratio` (the server accepts them for API callers). ## Validation Isolated herdr session `herdr-web-ui-qa-J`, web server on `:7460` with a temp state dir; nothing touched the live session. Thanks for this, and for the rebases and careful answers through several reviews. Closing it for now, not because of a defect:
I've gathered both proposals, @flam-ing's discoverability feedback and the open questions in #792, with a summary of how this PR worked. If the direction is agreed there, a fresh PR on current |
…#429) <!-- See CONTRIBUTING.md for checks, translations, contract tests and the changelog. --> > **Split, as asked in the review.** This PR is now the file viewer alone, one commit on `main`. > The parts split off have landed: the task lists (#669), `formatBytes` (#670) and chat code > highlighting (#671), which this PR builds on. ## Change The file viewer showed a text file as one plain `<pre>`. A Markdown plan or README read as source, and code had no colors and no line numbers. - **Markdown preview.** - A `.md`/`.markdown` file opens rendered with the chat's Markdown renderer. **Show source**, one toggle in the header, switches to its text. - Relative links (`./b.md`, `../src/x.ts`) resolve from the file's own folder and open in the viewer. - It takes the chat's font size and font. - It is as wide as the chat lane of the pane that opened it, and centered; Settings can make it the viewer's full width. The lane is written by `src/lib/chatLane.ts`: on each pane's `.terminal-stack`, as `PaneTerminal` did, and on the viewer from the pane it was opened from (`data-pane-owner`). Nothing is written on the document root, so two panes side by side (#602) each keep their own lane, and the merge order against #602 does not matter. - **Highlighted code with line numbers** for every text file, with #671's highlighter. The line numbers are a CSS counter, so a copy or selection is the code alone. - **Nothing a file holds can freeze the page.** - The viewer loads the first 256 KB of a text file (`TEXT_LOAD_LIMIT`). - The Preview's `parseMarkdown` runs in a worker with a 2 s budget (`src/lib/markdownPreview.ts`, on #671's `src/lib/offThread.ts`). A parse that runs over or throws opens the source, with "Too long to preview". - A Preview that still cannot be drawn says so and offers its source; it never blanks the app. - Code the worker cannot highlight within 2 s stays plain, with "Too long to highlight". - Drawing is bounded too, since bytes do not bound it: in Chromium 256 KB of line breaks held the page for 4 s and a 64 Ki-item list for 1.6 s. - Code past 20 000 lines is one text without line numbers (#671's `LINE_ELEMENT_LIMIT`), with "Too many lines to number". - A Preview that would draw over 20 000 elements (`previewElements`, counted in the worker) opens as its source, with "Too long to preview". - **Header actions:** - **Raw** opens the file in a new tab (`text/plain`, sandboxed, as before). - **Download** is there for every file. In an installed app on a phone, a new tab is an in-app view that does not always offer to save, and a text file cut short has no other way to be saved whole. - **Copy** copies the whole file. When nothing can copy (no clipboard API on plain-HTTP LAN, and the browser's copy command refused), it selects the source instead, switching a Preview to it first. - Close. - A file no tab can show has no Open in new tab, only Download. - **A partial view says so in the size:** `⚠ 256 KB of 1.3 MB`, in a warning color beside an icon. The reason ("Showing the first 256 KB", "Too long to highlight", "Too long to preview") is the tooltip, and is read out to screen readers. - **Settings → Chat → File viewer:** Wrap long lines, and Markdown width (Default / Full width). Highlight code is #671's setting under Chat and applies here too. - **New tokens:** `--line-number` and `--notice` are in `src/styles.css` and `DESIGN.md` for every palette, each at least 4.5:1. There is no server, protocol or demo change: everything is client-side, and the range request already existed. **Bundle**, gzip -6, measured against #671: the main script grows by 3.1 KB (372.8 → 375.9 KB). The Preview's worker (3.1 KB) is its own chunk, loaded on first use. ## Validation On `main` at `182ec4e`: - `bun install --frozen-lockfile`, `bun run typecheck` and `bun run build` pass. - `bun run test:unit`: 2269 pass, 7 skip, 0 fail. New or extended for the viewer: - `src/lib/markdownPreview.test.ts` - `src/lib/textPreview.test.ts`: `previewElements` and its limit. - `src/lib/textPreview.test.ts`: `readTextStart` against real `Response`s, and the empty file's 416. - `src/lib/filePaths.test.ts`: `resolveFromFile`, `pathParts`. - `src/lib/highlight.test.ts`: `languageForPath`. - `src/lib/settings.test.ts`: the new settings, and that `PaneTerminal` and the viewer both take the lane from `src/lib/chatLane.ts`. - Browser, `bun run check run bun scripts/<script>.ts` in Chromium: - `file-viewer-regression`: 31 PASS, with long tasks recorded from the first paint. It covers: - the Preview and the source, and relative links; - Raw, Download, and Copy, also when nothing can copy; - the Preview taking the chat's font, font size and the opening pane's lane; - the partial-view notice, and wrapping; - 20 000 nested quotes, and an empty file; - a chat block, and a Markdown file, the highlighter is slow on, with a long-task check that no task holds the page for a second; - a Markdown file past the load limit, and Highlight code off; - a file of 256 KB of line breaks, and a 64 Ki-item Markdown list, neither of which holds the page; - a file whose body is refused. - `file-viewer-mobile-regression`: 17 PASS (the header at 390 px). Its fixture now loads its bundle as a module script, which the workers' `import.meta.url` needs. - `settings-pages-demo-regression` 7 PASS, `chat-history-browser-qa` 6 PASS. - `ui-regression`: 78 PASS, then it stops at the startup prompt card ("1. Yes, continue") in my container, the same as on `main`. by @aNNdii Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Change
On a desktop, two panes side by side, as a window snapped to half the screen: drag a tab, or a sidebar row, over the pane area and drop it on the left or right half.
herdr-web-ui:split). It ends when either pane closes. A window narrower than 769px shows the active half alone. Alerts skip a pane open in either half. How it is built (
src/lib/split.ts, App):ashows a single pane, andbexists only while split, onbSide. Each slot keeps its pane and itsPaneTerminal, so switching the active half or trading sides never attaches a terminal again. Sides are drawn withorder.PaneTerminalunder its ownMachineContext, so a half can be another PC's pane. Its connection callbacks are no-ops, and the header's state stays the active half's.application/x-herdr-pane. The row keeps its reordering data too: dropped on the list it reorders, on the pane area it splits. The area takes the drop in the capture phase, so the composer and the terminal, which take dropped files, never see it.pane-tabpanelfor slot a,pane-tabpanel-bfor slot b, through a newTabStrippanelIdprop. This is a larger change to how the pane area is laid out, so I'm happy to adjust the interaction or split it up if you see it differently.
