feat(tabs): reorder tabs from the tab strip - #480
piotrchabros wants to merge 3 commits into
Conversation
Drag a tab onto another one's near or far half, press Alt+Left/Right on a
focused tab, or pick Move left / Move right in the tab's menu (the only way
on a touch screen). The move goes to herdr's tab.move through a new
POST /api/tab/move { tab_id, insert_index }, proxied for remote PCs and
answered by the demo.
The strip now follows herdr's tab order instead of sorting by number: a
moved tab keeps its number, so a move made in herdr's own UI never showed
here either.

WalkthroughThe tab strip now supports reordering tabs by dragging, keyboard shortcuts, and menu actions. A new move endpoint sends reorder requests to herdr, while the demo transport also handles moves. The strip follows workspace order and displays move failures. ChangesTab Reordering

Address review on devswha#480: - moves go to herdr one at a time; a refusal drops the moves queued behind it, and a late answer only touches the PC and workspace it was made in - the optimistic row is keyed by PC as well as workspace, and retires only once herdr answered the latest move - /api/tab/move refuses insert_index past the tab count with 400 invalid_index; the demo validates the raw field the same way - the browser regression waits for the strip's order, not only herdr's - a move that carries the open tab past the strip's edge scrolls it back Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Thanks for this, and for checking herdr 0.9.3's tab.move semantics before writing the client side. The fix that comes with it matters on its own: on v0.4.0 the strip still sorts by number (src/components/TabStrip.tsx:68), so a tab moved in herdr's TUI never shows its new place in the web UI. Using herdr's array order is right and matches DESIGN.md. I read the full diff at 6e9bff0 against v0.4.0 (aca94ee), merged it onto aca94ee in a scratch worktree, and ran the checks there.
Merge state
On v0.4.0 the branch conflicts only in CHANGELOG.md and docs/guide.md. Everything else (server, protocol, demo transport, TabStrip, i18n, tests) merges automatically. On the merged tree:
bun run check fast: generated types fresh, typecheck and build pass; unit suite 1703 pass, 4 skip, 1 fail. The one failure was mine, not yours: I had resolvedCHANGELOG.mdto this branch's side, which has no 0.4.0 section, andserver/release-notes.test.tsrequires every release in the summaries to be named in the changelog. With main's changelog restored that file passes (21 pass, 0 fail). It is a reminder for the rebase: keep main's 0.4.0 section whole and add only your entry above it.bun run check run bun test ./server/api.contract.test.tson an isolated herdr 0.9.3: 94 pass, 0 fail, including "moves a tab to a gap counted before the move, keeps its number, and reaches the local-PC alias".HERDR_TEST_MODE=unit bun test ./src/lib/tabOrder.test.ts ./src/lib/i18n.test.ts ./server/machines.test.ts: 49 pass, 0 fail
Please rebase onto main. Both conflicts are text only: the changelog entry stays under ## [Unreleased] / ### Added, above the 0.4.0 section that #565 cut, and docs/guide.md needs your paragraph placed in the current text.
Things to look at
- Remote PCs on an older bridge.
tab/moveis added toMACHINE_PROXY_PATH, but a remote PC runs the bridge from its runtime bundle (remote bundle 20 today). UntilREMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSIONis raised and aremote-vNbundle ships with this endpoint, Move left / Move right / drag on a remote PC's tab reach a bridge without the route and come back asReorder failed: …with a 404. Nothing breaks, and the order goes back as intended, but the actions are offered where they cannot work yet. This is release coordination on our side rather than something this PR has to solve. A sentence in the PR or DESIGN.md that a remote PC needs a bridge update for it would help. - Two clients moving at once.
insert_indexis a gap counted on the row the client saw. If another client (or herdr's TUI) moves a tab in the same workspace between the snapshot and the call, herdr applies the gap to its own current row and the tab lands one place off. The server's bound check catches only a gap past the end. This is inherent totab.movetaking an index rather than a neighbour id, so I would not block on it. The strip shows herdr's real order once the next snapshot arrives, which is the right fallback. - The flaky run you mentioned (herdr already at the Move right order, the strip still on the previous one). One window I can see, unverified: the optimistic row is dropped as soon as a settled move meets a snapshot in the same order. If a session read that started before the move (the 5 s poll) answers after the
session-changedrefetch, the strip has already let go of its own row and shows that older snapshot until the next read. I did not reproduce this and did not check whether App discards out-of-order session responses, so treat it as a lead rather than a finding.
Smaller notes
TabStrip.css: the 2px drop edge repeats the active underline's literal2px. That is consistent with the existing rule, so fine as is. Colors are all--accent, and there is no!important.- The server's
/api/tab/movetakes an extrasession.snapshotper move to bound-check the index. That costs one RPC and makesinvalid_indexhonest instead of herdr's 404, so I think it is worth keeping. - The contract test covers front, end, the local alias, an out-of-range index and unchanged
numbers. The demo transport answers the new endpoint with the same gap arithmetic, so the demo will not 404. ko/ja/zh have the two new strings. This covers every item in CONTRIBUTING.md for a new endpoint.
Overall this is in good shape. Once it is rebased, and the remote-PC point is acknowledged, I have nothing blocking.

Shortcut-policy review of 6e9bff0 (static review, not a full-PR approval):
The Alt+Left/Right binding belongs on the focused tab, not in the global Mod+Shift mapping. The active-element guard and rename field's propagation/IME guards preserve that boundary; the terminal does not acquire this binding.
Before merge:
- Refresh this branch against main: GitHub currently reports CONFLICTING/DIRTY. The required Fast checks and Integration and browser jobs have not run on this head; CodeRabbit success is not those checks.
- Extend the browser coverage to assert focus after a menu-driven move and after a refused move/rollback. Only the keyboard path explicitly calls focusTab; React reordering can remove/reinsert the focused node. This is a static risk, not a browser-reproduced failure from this review.
- Add an Alt+arrow-in-rename-field assertion, and expose Alt+Left/Right with aria-keyshortcuts as the workspace rows already do.
Keep this as the tab-reordering PR rather than folding it into the general shortcut cleanup. #602 also edits tab drag handlers; whichever lands second must retain both reorder and pane-split drag data.
## Change Keep app shortcuts as configurable Mod+Shift bindings and keep the mobile key bar a terminal input device, not an app-action toolbar. - Resolve command-palette hints from the saved mapping; disabled shortcuts have no hint. - Recognize non-Latin physical letter keys outside IME composition, sharing the terminal's physical-key convention and keeping Latin-layout letters intact. - Mark a narrow set of known browser/OS reservations and explain the currently selected conflict without rejecting or silently changing saved bindings. The list is intentionally not exhaustive. - Keep shortcut selects readable on narrow screens and explain global versus focus-local keys and device-local settings (English/Korean/Japanese/Chinese). - Start fresh/restored mobile bars with Esc, Tab and Ctrl+C. Preserve explicit custom layouts, empty layouts and legacy extra-key ordering. - Update the guide, design rules and existing CI browser regression. No HTTP/WS changes or new demo transport behavior. This does not replace #480 (tab reordering) or #602 (split view). Their shortcut paths were reviewed separately; both currently conflict with main and lack the required CI runs. Review comments document the remaining checks/fixes rather than closing either PR as superseded. ## Validation On Linux, Bun 1.4.2 / Node 24.18.0: - `bun run check fast` on the rebased branch: workflow syntax, generated types, typecheck, build and unit suite pass; **1853 pass, 6 skip, 0 fail**. - `bun scripts/key-bar-customization-demo-regression.ts`: PASS. Rebinding/Off/reset/persistence and palette hints, reservation warning without rewriting the setting, non-Latin shortcut with no terminal input, IME guard, Ctrl+C visibility at 320/390px, legacy/custom layouts and held modifiers. - `bun scripts/settings-pages-demo-regression.ts`: PASS. All settings pages at 320/390px, Back/Forward/Escape and responsive history behavior. - `bun run check run bun scripts/terminal-input-regression.ts`: PASS on an isolated herdr, including input readiness, drafts, IME and shortcut interception. - UI evidence below uses fictional demo fixtures only. Non-Latin browser events are synthetic; physical phones, macOS and real non-Latin hardware layouts were not tested. Production build retains the existing large-chunk warning. | Shortcut settings | Default terminal keys | | --- | --- | | | |
) ## Change herdr can move a pane to another tab, a new tab or another workspace (`pane.move`), and the web had no way to do it. This adds **Move pane to…** to the tab strip's tab menu and the sidebar's workspace row menu. The item opens the same row menu again under the same button (a popover on a desktop, the bottom sheet on a phone) listing **New tab**, the workspace's other tabs, every other workspace (the pane lands in a new tab there) and **New workspace**. A pick posts once to the new `POST /api/pane/move`. - `shared/protocol.ts`: `MovePaneRequest` / `MovePaneDestination` (herdr's `PaneMoveDestination` with the `type` the generated union widens to a string spelled out) and `PaneMoved` (= `PaneMoveResult`), with the route in the catalogue comment. `scripts/generate-protocol-types.ts` adds the `PaneMoveParams` / `PaneMoveResult` roots and the generated file is regenerated (not hand-edited). - `server/pane-move.ts` + `POST /api/pane/move` in `server/index.ts`: the body is checked here (`missing_pane_id`, `invalid_destination`, `invalid_focus`, plus the usual `invalid_json` / `invalid_body`) because herdr answers a malformed destination with a bare `invalid_request`; a `tab` destination's `split` defaults to `right`; `focus` defaults to false so herdr's own focus stays where it was. herdr's own refusals come back in the error envelope (`pane_not_found`, `tab_not_found`, `workspace_not_found`). The answer is herdr's `PaneMoveResult` whole: `pane` (under a **new** `pane_id` when the pane changed workspace), `previous_pane_id`, `created_tab` / `created_workspace`, `closed_tab_id` / `closed_workspace_id`, `changed: false, reason: "same_tab"` for a no-op. The old id's transcript cache is forgotten. `paneMove` in `server/herdr/client.ts` unwraps `{ move_result }`. - `server/machine-api.ts`: `pane/move` joins the proxy allowlist, so it works on a remote PC and through the `/api/machines/local/` alias. - `site/demo/transport.ts`: the demo answers `/api/pane/move` with the same bookkeeping its close/create handlers do (tabs, counts, automatic labels, layouts, focus), a new id when the pane crosses workspaces, and a running mock turn resolved to the new id. - `src/components/MovePaneMenu.tsx` (+ `.css`, tokens only), `src/lib/paneMove.ts`: the places (`paneMoveTargets`) and what follows a pane to its new id (`carryPaneRecords`: the lens, the composer draft, the terminal draft). `actions.paneMoved` in `App.tsx` carries them and re-selects the new id **only when the moved pane was the selected one on that PC**: a move made elsewhere (the TUI, another client) never moves the selection, the old id just leaves the snapshot and the existing fallback picks herdr's focus. Held queues and pending sends stay under the old id (they name a server lease), documented in `src/AGENTS.md`. - i18n ko/ja/zh, CHANGELOG (Unreleased → Added), DESIGN.md (row menu, tab menu, the new menu's head), `server/AGENTS.md` / `src/AGENTS.md` rows, `scripts/ui-regression.ts` menu lists. Measured on herdr 0.9.3: a move inside a workspace keeps the pane id (the tab changes; an emptied tab closes), a move into another workspace or a new one gives a new id; both are covered by the contract test. Out of scope on purpose: tab reordering (#480) and the split view (#602); the UI never exposes `split` / `target_pane_id` / `ratio` (the server accepts them for API callers). ## Validation Isolated herdr session `herdr-web-ui-qa-J`, web server on `:7460` with a temp state dir; nothing touched the live session. Thanks for this, and for checking herdr 0.9.3's |

Change
Tabs can now be reordered from the tab strip over the pane. Before this, the only way was herdr's own UI.
--accentedge shows where it will land (.tab-strip-item[data-drop]).The strip shows the new order straight away, the same way a rename shows before the snapshot catches up. If herdr refuses the move, the order goes back and the error shows at the end of the strip, like a failed close does.
Fix included: the strip used to sort tabs by
number. herdr'stab.movereorders the tab array but leaves each tab'snumberunchanged (checked on herdr 0.9.3), so a move made in herdr's terminal UI never showed in the web UI. The strip now uses herdr's array order, which is what DESIGN.md already describes ("in herdr's order").Wire
POST /api/tab/move { tab_id, insert_index } -> { ok: true }, which callstab.move.insert_indexcounts positions in the order before the move, from 0 to the tab count: the tab lands before the tab currently at that index, and the tab count puts it last. Calls that would leave the tab where it is are skipped on the client. A bad index returnsinvalid_index(400). After the move the server broadcastssession-changed, because no pane event follows a move (rename does the same).tab/moveis added toMACHINE_PROXY_PATH, so remote PCs can use it too, and the demo transport handles it.src/lib/tabOrder.ts(pure functions, unit tested). Also updated: DESIGN.md (tab strip section),
docs/guide.md, CHANGELOG (### Added), and ko/ja/zh strings for Move left / Move right. "Reorder failed: {reason}" already existed.Validation
bun run generate:types --check,bun run typecheck, bun run build: pass.bun run test:unit: 1256 pass, 0 fail. This includes the newsrc/lib/tabOrder.test.ts, whose cases are the orders herdr 0.9.3'stab.moveactually returned.server/api.contract.test.ts: 89 pass. The new "moves a tab…" test covers moving to the front, moving to the end, the local-PC alias, an out-of-range index being refused, and each tab keeping itsnumber. Validation now includestab/move(missing_tab_id,tab_not_found,invalid_index), andtab/moveis added to the invalid-body and cross-origin lists.server/device-access.contract.test.ts: 5 pass.server/machines.test.ts: 27 pass.tab/moveas its example of a missing route; it now usestab/focus.scripts/ui-regression.ts(Chromium 1243, on theherdr-web-ui-testsession) gains a step that drags a tab to the front, presses Alt+→, and uses the menu's Move right. After each move it checks herdr's order, the strip's order, that tab numbers are unchanged, and that focus stays on the moved tab. The menu assertions now include the move items for desktop and phone. The full script passed in 3 of 4 runs. In the one failure, herdr already had the order from Move right but the strip still showed the previous one. I couldn't reproduce it in two further full runs or in a standalone drag → Alt → menu repro, so it may be timing-sensitive. Happy to dig further if CI shows it.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
