Based on #558 (on #557, #556, #555, #554): this PR shows their commits until they are merged. Review only the last 3 commits.
make install installed only DMTCP: no mana_* script, no lower half, no libmana.so or stub, and no man page. (The man page's rule ran $(INSTALL) -d with INSTALL undefined, which make reads as -d, an ignored error.) It also created a directory named lib/@PACKAGE@, and make uninstall failed. This PR makes make install install MANA. It changes behavior, so it is not part of the no-behavior-change cleanup.
The four mana_* scripts move from bin/ to scripts/. make copies them into bin/, which is now all build output: .gitignore ignores it and make distclean deletes it. test-mana-restart.py tests scripts/mana_restart.
The targets that copy libmana.so, the stubs and the lower half into the source tree's lib/dmtcp and bin are now named stage, not install.
make install installs MANA's scripts and the lower half into bindir, libmana.so and the stubs into libdir/dmtcp (DMTCP's plugin directory), and mana.1 into mandir, with prefix and DESTDIR. make uninstall removes them, in the reverse order of make install. The README says how to install.
MANA's scripts find the lower half, DMTCP's programs and lib/dmtcp from their own directory, so an installed MANA runs as the source tree's does, if bindir and libdir are configure's defaults (PREFIX/bin, PREFIX/lib).
Found on the way, in DMTCP: DMTCP's own make uninstall fails with @am__xargs_n@: command not found. Its src/Makefile.in comes from automake 1.17, and its configure from aclocal 1.16, which does not set am__xargs_n. MANA's make uninstall removes MANA's files first, then runs DMTCP's. DMTCP fixed this in dmtcp/dmtcp#1314, and #561 updates MANA's submodule to it. With #561, make uninstall removes every installed file, MANA's and DMTCP's.
Checks:
make install DESTDIR=... installs the files above, and autotest.py --mana-root on the installed tree passes, also with the source tree's bin/ and lib/ moved away. make uninstall then removes every MANA file.
./configure --prefix=..., make install, and autotest.py --mana-root on the prefix: 3 of 3 passed.
Tests (locally, MPICH 5.0.1): test-mana-restart.py and test-loader-debug.py; make check on a clean build: 48 of 48 passed.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Installation
MANA can be installed into a chosen directory using the configured prefix. Installation places its command-line tools, libraries, and man pages in their configured locations.
make uninstall removes the installed MANA files.
Keep the default bin and lib locations under the chosen prefix, as MANA’s scripts use their relative locations to find related files.

Walkthrough
The build now stages MANA scripts and MPI proxy outputs in project directories. Install and uninstall rules manage those files and manpages at configured paths. The README documents installation under a chosen prefix.
The build uses configured bindir and libdir values, stages MANA scripts and MPI proxy outputs, and updates cleanup and ignore rules. The restart test now defaults to scripts/mana_restart.
Install and uninstall files Makefile.in, manpages/Makefile.in, README.md
Install and uninstall rules manage MANA files, DMTCP, and manpages at configured paths. The README documents prefix-based installation and notes the default bindir and libdir requirement.

Some installation configurations can fail or install stale files, and uninstall can remove an unrelated file when the manpage path contains spaces. Resolve these cases and use an installation prefix outside the source tree before merging.

The four scripts that run MANA, mana_launch, mana_restart,
mana_coordinator and mana_status, were tracked in bin/. Everything else
in bin/ is build output: DMTCP's programs, which 'make' copies there,
and the lower half. So .gitignore needed an exception for the scripts,
and 'make distclean' deleted everything in bin/ except files named
*mana*.
Now the scripts are in scripts/, and 'make' copies them into bin/,
where they find DMTCP's programs, the lower half and lib/dmtcp as
before. bin/ is all build output: .gitignore ignores it, and 'make
distclean' deletes it. test-mana-restart.py tests scripts/mana_restart,
so it no longer needs a build.
In mpi-proxy-split, 'make install' did not install MANA. It copied
libmana.so, the stubs and the lower half into the source tree's
lib/dmtcp and bin, where MANA's scripts find them, and it ignored
prefix and DESTDIR. The top-level 'make install' ran it, and the
top-level 'make uninstall' ran an uninstall rule that mpi-proxy-split
did not have, so it failed.
This copy is now the target 'stage', in mpi-proxy-split, lower-half and
mpi-wrappers, and 'make' runs it as before. The top-level 'make
install' and 'make uninstall' no longer run it. So 'make install'
installs what it installed before, only DMTCP, and the next commit adds
MANA. 'make uninstall' no longer fails.

Preserve the existing destination paths and install commands.
- Line 75: Update the install rule that invokes `$(MAKE)` under `DMTCP_ROOT` so
DMTCP programs are installed where MANA scripts search in `$(bindir)`, or

Review comments at @README.md:
- Around line 31-33: Update the README installation example’s configure prefix
so it points outside the source tree, avoiding overlap between the install
destination and the cloned project; keep the remaining example commands
unchanged.

'make install' installed only DMTCP. The man page was not installed
either: manpages/Makefile did not define INSTALL, so make ran
"$(INSTALL) -d" as "-d", which make read as an ignored error, and it
defined neither datarootdir nor exec_prefix, so mandir lost its prefix.
Also, the install created a directory named lib/@Package@, because
@Package@ is not a configure value.
Now 'make install' also installs MANA's scripts and the lower half into
bindir, libmana.so and the two stubs into libdir/dmtcp, where DMTCP
installs its plugins, and mana.1 into mandir. It honors prefix and
DESTDIR. MANA's scripts find the other files from their own directory,
so an installed MANA runs as the source tree's does, if bindir and
libdir are configure's defaults. The README says how to install.
'make uninstall' removes these files, in the reverse order of 'make
install', and then runs DMTCP's uninstall. It quotes each path, so a
space in a directory name cannot split a path into the names of other
files.
