Build game-owned shaders and migrate condenser water, fog, lamp and mist - #733
Conversation
A runnable Labelle game for labelle-bgfx#100's acceptance criterion — "a runnable Labelle example using this condenser's artwork" — exercising the engine's built-in `PixelWater` component and bgfx's `fs_pixel_water` program through the ordinary `labelle` CLI path. Modelled on examples/material-demo (bgfx + engine + zig_ecs). Two COND-07 condenser units side by side, each with a reactive reservoir, drifting mist and condensation drops that contact the CURRENT water surface and emit one ripple each via `game.addWaterRipple`. What it proves, beyond "it ran": * `PixelWater` is authored in a PREFAB's JSON config (prefabs/reservoir.jsonc), not inline in the scene, so the JSONC apply path's built-in branch (`game.addPixelWater`) runs on a prefab. * The scene instantiates that prefab TWICE and overrides only `water_level` (and the `Reservoir.unit` marker) at the instance site — the RFC-OVERRIDES-MERGE-RULES deep merge, on a built-in component. Both instances came up live at their overridden levels (0.8333 / 0.5), so the merge does not drop the component and the field does override. * Two INDEPENDENT gfx water instances from one prefab. * Draw order / foreground occlusion by layer order: machine interior -> water -> mist -> drops -> cooler -> frame. Emitter A (reservoir-local x 21) sits behind the cooler and is occluded on the way down. * Nothing fakes the water: the only contact with the effect is one `addWaterRipple` per drop. Measurements (native canvas 103x55, reservoir x 4 y 48 w 93 h 6, emitters at local x 21/28/43/51/65) come from labelle-bgfx PR #106, whose layer PNGs are vendored into assets/layers/ because that branch is unmerged. `grid_pixels` is 1 — a native art pixel IS an effect cell; #100's "6x6" is the x6 screen enlargement. Unit A is filled to 5/6 (the basin is only 6 native rows tall, so the level has 6 steps) to keep one dry row of headroom, since at level 1.0 the shader clamps the displaced surface and ripples become invisible. Verified on desktop bgfx/Metal: `bgfx: pixel-water program initialized`, no degrade line from programs.zig or retained_engine/draw.zig, and a reservoir-band frame diff (drop and occluder columns excluded) that moves by 66%/39% of cells with water on and is BIT-IDENTICAL with the effect switched off via the example's `CONDENSER_WATER_OFF=1` control. Include materials in mobile target-alias emission
For an iOS or Android project that has game-owned materials but uses mock ECS and has no plugins, GUI, promoted scripts, constants/i18n, or packs, the platform-specific branch does not emit const target = ios_target/android_target. This newly emitted material declaration nevertheless references target, so the generated build.zig fails with an undefined identifier before shaders can compile. Include opts.materials.len > 0 in both mobile alias conditions.

… the constraints the migration dropped tools/verify_runtime.py hard-coded `condenser.exe`, so the example's only real runtime acceptance could not be executed on macOS or Linux. With the platform-correct binary name it passes unchanged on macOS/Metal: 16 native runs, eight live generic materials each, right half byte-identical for every left-only control. Documentation the migration dropped, and which the generic path still carries: - A `.catalog` shader-texture binding must be a STANDALONE `.image` resource. The engine rejects any catalog entry whose `loader_kind` is not `.image` with `error.InvalidTexture` (labelle-engine/src/game/shader_material_mixin.zig), so an atlas frame can never be a mask. This was true of the retired built-in water effect and is unchanged; it was documented in project.labelle and was deleted with the rest of that header. Restored there and stated in docs/shader-materials.md, where the generic contract lives. - The screen-space layer rationale (a world layer centres the world origin and puts the measured native-px coordinates half a screen off). - The `local:` selections are marked as what they are: not mergeable. docs/shader-migration.md's release sequence was missing the step that would otherwise reproduce the assembler#731 break in reverse: a default `.backend = .bgfx` resolves through `ProjectConfig.builtinProvider`, still pinned at 0.6.6 here, so the released contract-v2 backend must be adopted in the SAME change as the new core. Also records assembler#732 — the examples lane only GENERATES bgfx examples, so a green run is not evidence this example builds. Plus: `DuplicateMaterialName` returned with no diagnostic; it now names both colliding folders and why the comparison folds case. zig build test --summary all: 2904/2916 passed (12 skipped), exit 0. Generated example suite: 20/20, exit 0. examples/plugin-controllers regenerated + built + run to exercise the emitted `rejectComponentCollisions` guard on a plugin-bearing project. Exclude light packs from the material-module collision
When a project has game-owned materials and a light pack named materials, this loops over the full cfg.plugins list and rejects generation even though light packs have no importable module and are emitted only as pack__<prefix> modules. The surrounding generation code deliberately derives cfg_modules to exclude those packs, so this collision check should use that module-bearing subset; otherwise a valid @packs/materials configuration fails with MaterialModuleCollision despite having no @import("materials") conflict.

Reject symlinked material directories during discovery
When materials/<name> is a directory symlink, the iterator reports it as a symlink and this condition silently skips it instead of enforcing the pipeline's symlink prohibition. If it is the project's only material, generation emits no materials module at all, so otherwise valid game code later fails at @import("materials") with no diagnostic explaining that the material was discarded; explicitly reject this entry kind as is already done for symlinks encountered by trackTree.

…blings Replace the four `local:../../../labelle-*` development selections in examples/condenser/project.labelle with the released pins: core 2.0.0, gfx 2.0.0, engine 3.0.0 and the bgfx backend 0.21.0 (the first contract-v2 backend; it requires core >= 2.0.0, so the four move together). The assembler stays `local:../../` like every example. labelle.lock was regenerated through the CLI (v1.67.0, no override needed). README and docs/shader-migration.md now describe the released pins; step 5 of the release sequence (src/config.zig builtin provider default + scaffold trio) deliberately stays untouched and follows assembler#736. Verified as a standalone consumer: the assembler checkout mirrored outside the monorepo (no sibling labelle-* checkouts, so findRepoRoot finds nothing), scratch LABELLE_HOME, `labelle build` exit 0 with no `generate failed` and no "built from LOCAL sources" warning, staged build.zig.zon versions 2.0.0/2.0.0/3.0.0/0.21.0 byte-identical to the tagged manifests, `labelle run --timeout=8` exit 0 with all four shader components reporting 2/2 generic materials live and no degrade/fallback line. labelle.lock was regenerated through the CLI (installed v1.67.0, no override). README and docs/shader-migration.md describe the released pins.
src/config.zig is deliberately untouched: the bgfx entry of the builtin provider default and the scaffold trio must move together with the core >= 2.0.0 floor (bgfx 0.21.0 requires it), so that is a separate step after #736 merges.
Standalone proof (not in-tree)
An in-tree build proves nothing here: the assembler prefers sibling checkouts, and the in-tree generate said so explicitly (warning: core is built from LOCAL sources, not the pinned 2.0.0 — source .../labelle-core for all four packages). So the branch was mirrored outside the monorepo (findRepoRoot walks up from the binary and finds no labelle-core), with a scratch LABELLE_HOME so packages come from the registry at the pinned tags:

Ship compatible defaults before accepting default BGFX materials
When a project adds materials/ while using the ordinary .backend = .bgfx defaults, this check accepts the configuration, but this tree still defaults to core 1.28.0 and BGFX 0.6.6, while the generated material module unconditionally requires material contract v2. Such a project therefore generates successfully and then always fails at the generated @compileError. Either update the default framework/backend pins in this change or reject incompatible release pins during generation.

Fixed in 1dd9217 (after merging #736's main) and tightened in 1c7df72. The fix is the defaults, moved together: builtinProvider .bgfx 0.20.0 → 0.21.0 (.sokol stays 0.6.0); scaffold trio 1.32.0 / 2.12.2 / 1.30.1 → core 2.0.0 / gfx 2.0.0 / engine 3.0.0; #736's bgfx_core_floors gains the hard floor bgfx >= 0.21.0 → core >= 2.0.0 and checkTrioFloors/trio_floors the 2.0.0-line floors, with #736's tests extended. The other half — reject an incompatible EXPLICIT pin at generate time — is material_pipeline.contractViolation: a project that owns materials/ and pins the official labelle-bgfx < 0.21.0 or labelle-core < 2.0.0 (release-shaped pins only; local: is left alone; custom providers are validated by the generated contract guard, see round 3) fails generate with materials/: game-owned materials require material contract v2 (labelle-bgfx >= 0.21.0 on labelle-core >= 2.0.0); project pins labelle-bgfx 0.20.0. Bump the pin, or drop it to take the default. instead of the deep @compileError. General generate-time floors stay with #739.
Standalone proof (scratch LABELLE_HOME, assembler mirrored outside labelle-toolkit so no sibling checkout can shadow a pin): labelle init --backend=bgfx (installed CLI v1.67.0, LABELLE_ASSEMBLER=mirror) → install 0 / generate 0 (no generate failed lines) / full zig build 0, staged build.zig.zon .version read back core 2.0.0 / gfx 2.0.0 / engine 3.0.0 / bgfx 0.21.0. The same scaffold + materials/tint/ (one trivial material, 4 targets) → generate 0 / build 0, materials module wired, 8 compiled shader variants — the P1 scenario, now passing. Same project with an explicit bgfx 0.20.0 pin → generate exit 1 with the diagnostic above. --backend=null scaffold on the new trio builds too (the CI curated-set job's shape). material-demo and pack-city on their explicit bgfx 0.20.0 / core 1.32.0 pins still build (versions read back). condenser: build 0 and labelle run --timeout=8 exit 0 with water/fog/lamp/mist each 2/2 generic materials live, zero degrade lines.

Identify BGFX providers independently of their package name
When .backend = .bgfx is paired with a compatible custom provider whose package name is not literally bgfx (the repository itself uses names such as bgfx_v2 for this supported override shape), cfg.backendName() reaches this comparison as that package name and valid materials are rejected with UnsupportedMaterialBackend. Gate on the backend enum or a declared material capability/contract instead of the provider's configurable name.

Fixed in bacdb9c. material_pipeline.requireBackend now keys off the .bgfx ENUM TAG (with .null for the tests-target substitution), not backendName() — same reasoning as ProjectConfig.effectiveGamepad, and stage takes the ProjectConfig instead of the name string. Test: .backend = .bgfx + .backend_package = .{ .name = "bgfx_v2", .. } (the in-tree fixture spelling) is accepted; .backend = .sokol is rejected, including with a package literally named "bgfx". Documented limitation (as for gamepad): a third-party bgfx-shaped provider selected purely via .backend_package with .backend left at its .raylib default must also declare .backend = .bgfx — there is no material capability in the provider manifest yet.

Compile shaders for the actual iOS and web platforms
For iOS and wasm projects, these mappings still invoke shaderc as --platform osx for Metal and --platform android for ESSL. Shader sources that use BGFX platform conditionals consequently compile the macOS or Android branch rather than the iOS or Emscripten branch, even though the generated build knows the real project platform. Thread that platform into shader compilation (or emit separate iOS/web variants) instead of collapsing each shader language to one unrelated platform.

…mist in test_all, doc status - material_pipeline: gate game-owned materials on the `.bgfx` ENUM TAG (`requireBackend`), not the resolved package name — `.backend = .bgfx` with a provider named e.g. `bgfx_v2` was rejected with UnsupportedMaterialBackend (Codex P2). Test covers a non-literal provider name (accepted) and `.sokol` (rejected). - build_zig: `needsTargetAlias` includes `opts.materials.len != 0`, so a materials-only iOS/Android game defines `target` before material_build.zig consumes it (CodeRabbit). Test asserts the alias precedes the consumer and is absent without materials. - condenser: `test_all` (CONDENSER_TEST_LEFT=1) now toggles the left mist too; README lists the four-way control (CodeRabbit). - docs/shader-migration.md: released pins, mist, 20 tests, Metal + Android verified live (CodeRabbit). …ct v2), materials pin gate, --backend validation The P1 on #733: a project with `materials/` on the ordinary `.backend = .bgfx` defaults generated fine and always died at the generated module's `@compileError` because the defaults still resolved bgfx 0.20.0 / core 1.32.0 while the module requires material contract v2. The fix is the defaults, moved TOGETHER (the #731 lesson): - src/config.zig builtinProvider `.bgfx` 0.20.0 -> 0.21.0 (first contract-v2 backend; names `shader_material` ungated, hard floor core >= 2.0.0). `.sokol` stays 0.6.0. - build.zig scaffold trio 1.32.0 / 2.12.2 / 1.30.1 -> core 2.0.0 / engine 3.0.0 / gfx 2.0.0; floor comments rewritten to the new truth. - init_cmd `bgfx_core_floors`: bgfx >= 0.21.0 -> core >= 2.0.0 (compile_break) on top of #736's table; `checkTrioFloors` gains the 2.0.0-line floors (gfx 2 <-> core 2 + engine 3, engine 3 <-> core 2 + gfx 2); #736's tests extended to the new pairings. - material_pipeline: `contractViolation`/`requireContract` reject, at generate time, an EXPLICIT pre-contract-v2 `.backend_package` / `.core_version` pin on a project that owns materials/, naming the pin and the floor (the "reject incompatible release pins" half of the P1; #739 tracks the general floor check). `parsePin`/`pinAtLeast` move to config.zig so init and generate share one comparison. - init: reject an unknown `--backend=` BEFORE the floor check and before writing anything, listing the valid backends from the enum (#736 CodeRabbit follow-up). Front door verified: `--backend=bgxf` -> exit 2, no directory, diagnostic lists raylib, sokol, sdl, bgfx, wgpu, null. - docs/shader-migration.md: release-sequence step 5 is done. Scope the BGFX version floor to official providers
When .backend = .bgfx uses a compatible custom provider with its own semver scheme (for example, .backend_package = .{ .name = "bgfx_v2", .repo = "github.com/acme/bgfx", .version = "0.1.0" }), this compares that unrelated version against labelle-bgfx's 0.21.0 floor and rejects the project as an obsolete labelle-bgfx release. The enum-keyed backend fix now deliberately admits custom package names, so apply this release floor only to the official labelle-bgfx package (or obtain a material-contract capability/version from the provider); the generated contract guard can continue validating arbitrary providers.

Fixed in 1c7df72. The 0.21.0 floor is a fact about the OFFICIAL labelle-bgfx train only, so contractViolation now applies it only when isOfficialBgfx(bp) — the resolved package's repo equals the builtin provider's repo (github.com/labelle-toolkit/labelle-bgfx; the enum default or an explicit pin of that repo). A custom provider on another repo keeps its own semver and passes the pin gate; the generated module's MATERIAL_CONTRACT_VERSION == 2 guard validates it. The core floor still applies (it is about labelle-core itself). Unit test: .backend_package = .{ .name = "bgfx_v2", .repo = "github.com/acme/bgfx", .version = "0.1.0" } accepted; official 0.20.0 rejected even when the package is named bgfx_v2; custom provider + core 1.32.0 rejected. Force-failed via the full suite with isOfficialBgfx mutated to always-true (exactly that test failed, in both binaries), restored. Standalone (scratch LABELLE_HOME, mirrored assembler, generate-time): a materials/ project pinning bgfx_v2 at local:<copy of labelle-bgfx 0.21.0> with .version = "0.1.0" — the 1dd9217 binary rejected it at generate with ... project pins labelle-bgfx 0.1.0 (the bug), the 1c7df72 binary generates (exit 0) and the bgfx_v2_desktop target does a full zig build (exit 0, materials module wired, 8 compiled tint variants).

Enforce the new framework floors outside tests
These new compatibility rules exist only in a test helper and are never applied by cmdInit or project generation. For example, labelle-assembler init game --engine-version=2.12.2 combines that explicit pin with the new core/gfx 2.0.0 defaults, passes the backend/core-only validation, and writes the exact 2.0.0 / 2.12.2 / 2.0.0 combination that the added test declares incompatible. Move the trio-floor logic into a production validator and run it before scaffolding/generation so accepted configurations do not fail later while compiling their dependencies.

Fixed in 1c7df72, same shape as the #736 fix: the trio floors are now ONE production table (trio_floors: subject >= X puts requires >= Y, with severity + why) behind trioFloorViolation(core, engine, gfx), which cmdInit runs after the backend/core check and before scaffolding — compile break refuses (exit 2, nothing written), curated warns and scaffolds. checkTrioFloors (the test helper) is a thin wrapper over that same function, no parallel copy. Test pins: --engine-version=2.12.2 under the 2.0.0 defaults → compile_break, floor engine >= 3.0.0, diagnostic starts labelle-gfx 2.0.0 requires labelle-engine >= 3.0.0; got core 2.0.0 / engine 2.12.2 / gfx 2.0.0 ( and ends with Pass --engine-version=3.0.0; old gfx / old core under engine 3.0.0 name --gfx-version=2.0.0 / --core-version=2.0.0; a curated-only violation stays a warning; compile break wins when both trip; defaults, every earlier curated set and local: pins pass. Force-failed by making the validator return null (that test failed), restored. Front door, standalone: labelle-assembler init engcheck --engine-version=2.12.2 → exit 2, no directory, diagnostic present; init defcheck (defaults) → exit 0, project written, zero warnings; init --backend=bgfx → exit 0. Scope is init only — generate/upgrade enforcement is labelle-assembler#739's.

… train; trio floors as an init validator; document M - material_pipeline: the 0.21.0 release floor now applies only when the resolved provider IS the official labelle-bgfx (repo == the builtin provider's repo). Normalize remote repository identifiers before comparing them.
parseProjectConfig preserves the declared PluginDep.repo, and effectiveBackendPackage returns an explicit package unchanged. The fetch path accepts https://... and .git spellings, but isOfficialBgfx compares the raw value with github.com/labelle-toolkit/labelle-bgfx. An old 0.20.0 pin using either spelling can therefore skip contractViolation and fail later at the generated module's MATERIAL_CONTRACT_VERSION check. Normalize remote identifiers before this comparison while preserving local: paths.

Real, and deferred deliberately: this was the third and final review-fix round for #733, so it is tracked as #742 rather than fixed here. It fails closed today (the generated contract guard / the build still refuses), just later and with a worse diagnostic than the validator should give. Both findings are additions to the single floor tables this PR introduced, no new mechanism.

@apotema, acknowledged. The current generated contract guard fails closed. The remaining gap is the earlier generate-time diagnostic for equivalent official repository URLs. GitHub issue #742 tracks the follow-up, so this change can remain out of scope for PR #733.

Add reverse floors for the 2.x core line
When init keeps the default core 2.0.0 but the user explicitly supplies both --engine-version=2.12.2 and --gfx-version=1.30.1, every rule here passes because the new-line rules are triggered only by gfx 2.x or engine 3.x. The command therefore scaffolds core 2.0.0 / engine 2.12.2 / gfx 1.30.1, even though the preceding compatibility documentation states that engine 2.12.x still compiles the PixelWater contract removed from core 2.0.0 and that the two lines cannot mix. Add core-2.x-to-engine/gfx floors so this paired override is rejected before writing an unbuildable project.

Add a game-owned shader pipeline so effects are defined in
materials/<name>/material.jsonand shader source, then controlled by ordinary prefab components. Generate typed material imports, compile target variants with a pinned host shaderc, track includes for cache invalidation and reject component/binding collisions.Migrate condenser water out of toolkit-specific APIs and add FogShader, LampShader and MistShader. Water remains contained and responds to drops. Mist drifts above the live water surface and disappears when empty; lamp geometry and all effects are independently configurable per chamber. Preserve native artwork resolution and foreground occlusion.
