fix(examples): pin pixel_water-safe backends; bump the bgfx/sokol builtin defaults - #731
Conversation
…aults
labelle-core v1.32.0 appended `MaterialEffect.pixel_water`. That is
SOURCE-BREAKING for a backend whose material seam switches exhaustively
over that enum: it stops compiling until it has a `.pixel_water` arm.
CI's "Examples integration test" clones `labelle-core` at `main` as a
SIBLING checkout, and the assembler's monorepo auto-discovery
(`cache/local.zig: findRepoRoot` → `populateFrameworkPackage(..., .discovered)`)
builds that sibling INSTEAD of the version an example pins. So every
example pinning a pre-fix backend compiled the OLD BACKEND against the
NEW CORE:
.labelle/deps/labelle-sokol/src/gfx/material.zig:484:5:
error: switch must handle all possibilities
backend_contract.zig:308:5: note: unhandled enumeration value: 'pixel_water'
Latent on `main` (assembler CI has not run since 2026-09-10); first
surfaced on PR #730.
Example pins — bumped to the LOWEST backend release carrying the fix:
* sprite-runner: sokol 0.5.0 → 0.6.0 (declines the effect, @hasField-gated)
* material-demo: bgfx 0.13.1 → 0.20.0 (implements it, same gating)
* pack-city: bgfx 0.13.1 → 0.20.0
* tile-explorer: raylib 0.3.0 UNCHANGED — labelle-raylib has no
`MaterialEffect` reference at all, so it is unaffected (verified by
grep and by a full build against core `main`).
Builtin provider defaults (`src/config.zig: builtinProvider`), which every
project WITHOUT an explicit `.backend_package` resolves through:
* .bgfx 0.6.6 → 0.20.0
* .sokol 0.2.1 → 0.6.0
Both are again the lowest release with the fix — which happens to be the
newest, because the backend fixes shipped the same day as the core
release. sokol 0.6.0 raises no floor (its seam is `@hasDecl`-gated from
core v1.25.0 and every v1.32.0 decl it names carries its own probe;
labelle-sokol's own examples still pin core 1.24.0). bgfx 0.20.0 does
raise the implicit floor — bgfx ≥ 0.15.0 consumes core's typed
`BackendTextureId` (core ≥ v1.28.0) and names `PixelWaterDraw` /
`PIXEL_WATER_*` ungated — so the comment tells a project that must stay on
an older core to pin `.backend_package` explicitly instead. No example
uses the builtin bgfx/sokol default and no test asserts these strings, so
the bump is CI-neutral; it repairs scaffolded projects.
Verified with a CI-shaped workspace (scratch `LABELLE_HOME`, assembler
binary beside labelle-core/engine/gfx/null siblings at `main` and NO
sokol/bgfx/raylib sibling, so backends come from the registry at the
pinned tag — exactly what CI resolves). Reproduced the failure on
sprite-runner at sokol 0.5.0 first, then built, checking each exit code
separately and grepping every generate log for `generate failed`:
sprite-runner (sokol), tile-explorer (raylib), material-demo (bgfx),
pack-city (bgfx), camera-builtin + coin-collector (null), and two
throwaway copies with `.backend_package` REMOVED to exercise the bumped
builtin defaults (resolved 0.20.0 / 0.6.0 from the staged deps' zon, not
just a green build). `zig build test` and `zig fmt --check` pass.
Unblocks PR #730 and repairs `main`.

Align the bgfx default with the scaffolded core version
When a user runs init --backend=bgfx, the scaffold still pins core 1.28.0 (build.zig:58) while this builtin now resolves bgfx 0.20.0. The preceding comment documents that this backend references v1.32-only PixelWaterDraw/PIXEL_WATER_* declarations without guards, so the generated project is guaranteed to fail compilation unless the user manually overrides a version. Raise the curated core default and its compatibility checks to 1.32, or avoid selecting this backend for older core pins.

Pair the bgfx examples with core 1.32 or newer
Outside the CI sibling-checkout layout, the documented labelle build path honors this example's unchanged .core_version = "1.26.0" at line 73. bgfx 0.20.0 cannot compile against that core because it names v1.32-only backend-contract declarations without guards, despite the new comments claiming compatibility with the pinned core. pack-city has the same 0.20.0/1.26.0 pairing, so both released-pin examples now fail on a normal standalone checkout; update their runtime pins to a compatible set or retain a backend compatible with 1.26.

Align the explicit bgfx pin with the core pin. Both examples explicitly select labelle-bgfx 0.20.0, so effectiveBackendPackage() uses that package instead of builtinProvider(). This precedence does not override .core_version = "1.26.0".
The released labelle-bgfx 0.20.0 metadata requires labelle-core >= 1.32.0, and its source imports PixelWaterDraw and PIXEL_WATER_* declarations that are absent from core 1.26.0. Each released-pin example can therefore fail to compile outside the sibling-core CI setup, which substitutes the sibling checkout for the configured core pin. The compatibility claim in both READMEs is false for the released pins.
Update both projects to a core-compatible pin, or select a backend release that supports core 1.26.0. Update both README compatibility notes to match.

The query regarding "github.com/labelle-toolkit/labelle-bgfx 0.20.0 PixelWaterDraw PIXEL_WATER_" does not correspond to a standard or documented feature, API, or specific code identifier within the known labelle-toolkit ecosystem or the bgfx library [1][2][3]. Research indicates that labelle-toolkit is a suite of tools for Zig, which includes a labelle-gfx engine that supports various backends, including bgfx [3]. Recent development in the labelle-toolkit ecosystem [1][2][4][5] has focused on Android backend support, refactoring backend files [6][7], and adding post-processing demonstrations [8], but no "PixelWaterDraw" function or "PIXEL_WATER_" identifier has been identified in these projects [1][8][7]. Additionally, "PixelWater" and "PixelWaterDraw" are common terms used in various third-party pixel-art water shaders, particularly for engines like Godot or Unity (e.g., jess-hammer/2d-pixel-water-shader) [9][10][11][12][13]. It is highly likely that these terms are unrelated to the labelle-toolkit's internal bgfx implementation. If you are encountering these terms in a specific project or error trace, it may be a custom implementation or a third-party extension not part of the official labelle-toolkit repository [3].

Prevent the builtin bgfx pin from breaking older core pins.
builtinProvider() selects bgfx 0.20.0 for every .backend = .bgfx project, while ProjectConfig.core_version still accepts 1.26.0. The labelle-bgfx v0.20.0 package declares core v1.32.0 as its floor and unconditionally imports PixelWaterDraw and PIXEL_WATER_* declarations that are absent from core 1.26.0. Its @hasField(MaterialEffect, "pixel_water") guards only protect the enum-specific paths; they do not protect those payload declarations. The default combination therefore reaches a backend compile failure.
Reject bgfx 0.20.0 with core versions below 1.32.0 before backend generation, or select a provider that supports the requested core. Update examples/pack-city/project.labelle and its documentation so they do not claim that this combination supports core 1.26.0.

…caffold (#731 follow-up) (#736) * fix: pair bgfx 0.20.0 with core 1.32.0 in the examples and the init scaffold (#731 follow-up) #731 bumped the bgfx pin in examples/material-demo and examples/pack-city (and the builtin `.bgfx` provider default) to 0.20.0 while leaving the examples on core 1.26.0 and the `labelle init` trio on core 1.28.0. The assembler unifies every package onto `.core_version`, and released bgfx 0.20.0 has a HARD core floor of 1.28.0 (`core.BackendTextureId`, a struct field type, eagerly analyzed), so on a STANDALONE checkout both examples died inside the backend: labelle-bgfx/src/gfx/types.zig:17:38: error: root source file struct 'root' has no member named 'BackendTextureId' CI never saw it: the showcase job clones labelle-core at `main` as a sibling that monorepo auto-discovery builds INSTEAD of the pin, and the bgfx games are generate-only there (#732). The v1.32.0 PixelWaterDraw / PIXEL_WATER_* names are NOT a compile floor (lazy aliases behind `@hasField` gates; a core-1.28.0 scaffold does build standalone) — the #731 comments claiming 0.20.0 "builds against the pinned 1.26.0" were false regardless. - examples: runtime trio -> core 1.32.0 / engine 2.12.2 / gfx 1.30.1 (the curated set with core raised; satisfies every checkTrioFloors floor, at or above labelle-bgfx's own bgfx-android pins). - build.zig: curated core default 1.28.0 -> 1.32.0 as a CURATED floor — the core bgfx 0.20.0 was released against. - init_cmd.zig: checkBgfxProviderFloors reads the real builtinProvider (now pub) default and asserts both floors; table test rejects the two #731 pairings. - comments/READMEs/showcase-plan: say what is actually true. Verified standalone (scratch LABELLE_HOME, out-of-tree binary, registry tarballs at the pinned tags): install -> generate -> full `zig build` exit 0 for both examples and for bgfx/null/raylib/sokol scaffolds. …ct v2), materials pin gate, --backend validation The P1 on #733: a project with `materials/` on the ordinary `.backend = .bgfx` defaults generated fine and always died at the generated module's `@compileError` because the defaults still resolved bgfx 0.20.0 / core 1.32.0 while the module requires material contract v2. The fix is the defaults, moved TOGETHER (the #731 lesson): - src/config.zig builtinProvider `.bgfx` 0.20.0 -> 0.21.0 (first contract-v2 backend; names `shader_material` ungated, hard floor core >= 2.0.0). `.sokol` stays 0.6.0. - build.zig scaffold trio 1.32.0 / 2.12.2 / 1.30.1 -> core 2.0.0 / engine 3.0.0 / gfx 2.0.0; floor comments rewritten to the new truth. - init_cmd `bgfx_core_floors`: bgfx >= 0.21.0 -> core >= 2.0.0 (compile_break) on top of #736's table; `checkTrioFloors` gains the 2.0.0-line floors (gfx 2 <-> core 2 + engine 3, engine 3 <-> core 2 + gfx 2); #736's tests extended to the new pairings. - material_pipeline: `contractViolation`/`requireContract` reject, at generate time, an EXPLICIT pre-contract-v2 `.backend_package` / `.core_version` pin on a project that owns materials/, naming the pin and the floor (the "reject incompatible release pins" half of the P1; #739 tracks the general floor check). `parsePin`/`pinAtLeast` move to config.zig so init and generate share one comparison. - init: reject an unknown `--backend=` BEFORE the floor check and before writing anything, listing the valid backends from the enum (#736 CodeRabbit follow-up). Front door verified: `--backend=bgxf` -> exit 2, no directory, diagnostic lists raylib, sokol, sdl, bgfx, wgpu, null. - docs/shader-migration.md: release-sequence step 5 is done. …ist (#733) * examples: add the COND-07 condenser pixel-water example A runnable Labelle game for labelle-bgfx#100's acceptance criterion — "a runnable Labelle example using this condenser's artwork" — exercising the engine's built-in `PixelWater` component and bgfx's `fs_pixel_water` program through the ordinary `labelle` CLI path. Modelled on examples/material-demo (bgfx + engine + zig_ecs). Two COND-07 condenser units side by side, each with a reactive reservoir, drifting mist and condensation drops that contact the CURRENT water surface and emit one ripple each via `game.addWaterRipple`. What it proves, beyond "it ran": * `PixelWater` is authored in a PREFAB's JSON config (prefabs/reservoir.jsonc), not inline in the scene, so the JSONC apply path's built-in branch (`game.addPixelWater`) runs on a prefab. * The scene instantiates that prefab TWICE and overrides only `water_level` (and the `Reservoir.unit` marker) at the instance site — the RFC-OVERRIDES-MERGE-RULES deep merge, on a built-in component. Both instances came up live at their overridden levels (0.8333 / 0.5), so the merge does not drop the component and the field does override. * Two INDEPENDENT gfx water instances from one prefab. * Draw order / foreground occlusion by layer order: machine interior -> water -> mist -> drops -> cooler -> frame. Emitter A (reservoir-local x 21) sits behind the cooler and is occluded on the way down. * Nothing fakes the water: the only contact with the effect is one `addWaterRipple` per drop. Measurements (native canvas 103x55, reservoir x 4 y 48 w 93 h 6, emitters at local x 21/28/43/51/65) come from labelle-bgfx PR #106, whose layer PNGs are vendored into assets/layers/ because that branch is unmerged. `grid_pixels` is 1 — a native art pixel IS an effect cell; #100's "6x6" is the x6 screen enlargement. Unit A is filled to 5/6 (the basin is only 6 native rows tall, so the level has 6 steps) to keep one dry row of headroom, since at level 1.0 the shader clamps the displaced surface and ripples become invisible. Verified on desktop bgfx/Metal: `bgfx: pixel-water program initialized`, no degrade line from programs.zig or retained_engine/draw.zig, and a reservoir-band frame diff (drop and occluder columns excluded) that moves by 66%/39% of cells with water on and is BIT-IDENTICAL with the effect switched off via the example's `CONDENSER_WATER_OFF=1` control. Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01XBGRLojiysEr5zy1U5mbP6 * Keep condenser mist stationary to focus on water animation * Keep reservoir still except for drop impact ripples * Preserve reference-resolution condenser art at native display scale * Add game-owned shader material build pipeline and collision checks * feat(condenser): own water fog and lamp shaders and controls * Document coordinated shader migration and validation limits * Add game-owned drifting mist above live reservoir water * review: make the condenser verification runnable off Windows; restore the constraints the migration dropped tools/verify_runtime.py hard-coded `condenser.exe`, so the example's only real runtime acceptance could not be executed on macOS or Linux. With the platform-correct binary name it passes unchanged on macOS/Metal: 16 native runs, eight live generic materials each, right half byte-identical for every left-only control. Documentation the migration dropped, and which the generic path still carries: - A `.catalog` shader-texture binding must be a STANDALONE `.image` resource. The engine rejects any catalog entry whose `loader_kind` is not `.image` with `error.InvalidTexture` (labelle-engine/src/game/shader_material_mixin.zig), so an atlas frame can never be a mask. This was true of the retired built-in water effect and is unchanged; it was documented in project.labelle and was deleted with the rest of that header. Restored there and stated in docs/shader-materials.md, where the generic contract lives. - The screen-space layer rationale (a world layer centres the world origin and puts the measured native-px coordinates half a screen off). - The `local:` selections are marked as what they are: not mergeable. docs/shader-migration.md's release sequence was missing the step that would otherwise reproduce the assembler#731 break in reverse: a default `.backend = .bgfx` resolves through `ProjectConfig.builtinProvider`, still pinned at 0.6.6 here, so the released contract-v2 backend must be adopted in the SAME change as the new core. Also records assembler#732 — the examples lane only GENERATES bgfx examples, so a green run is not evidence this example builds. Plus: `DuplicateMaterialName` returned with no diagnostic; it now names both colliding folders and why the comparison folds case. zig build test --summary all: 2904/2916 passed (12 skipped), exit 0. Generated example suite: 20/20, exit 0. examples/plugin-controllers regenerated + built + run to exercise the emitted `rejectComponentCollisions` guard on a plugin-bearing project. The assembler stays `local:../../` like every example. labelle.lock was regenerated through the CLI (v1.67.0, no override needed). README and docs/shader-migration.md now describe the released pins; step 5 of the release sequence (src/config.zig builtin provider default + scaffold trio) deliberately stays untouched and follows assembler#736. Verified as a standalone consumer: the assembler checkout mirrored outside the monorepo (no sibling labelle-* checkouts, so findRepoRoot finds nothing), scratch LABELLE_HOME, `labelle build` exit 0 with no `generate failed` and no "built from LOCAL sources" warning, staged build.zig.zon versions 2.0.0/2.0.0/3.0.0/0.21.0 byte-identical to the tagged manifests, `labelle run --timeout=8` exit 0 with all four shader components reporting 2/2 generic materials live and no degrade/fallback line. Assembler `zig build test`: 2904/2916 passed, 12 skipped (branch baseline). Test covers a non-literal provider name (accepted) and `.sokol` (rejected). - build_zig: `needsTargetAlias` includes `opts.materials.len != 0`, so a materials-only iOS/Android game defines `target` before material_build.zig consumes it (CodeRabbit). …ine e2e (#732, #735) (#745) Two coverage gaps in one workflow, grouped because they rewire the same lanes of `.github/workflows/ci.yml` and would conflict as separate PRs. ── #732: the bgfx examples were generated, never built ────────────────── `generate` proves the manifest parsed. It does not compile a line of backend source, so every defect that lives in a DEPENDENCY — an exhaustive switch, a moved contract type, a raised floor — passed. That is how core v1.32.0's `MaterialEffect.pixel_water` reached main: `material-demo` and `pack-city` both pinned a bgfx with no arm for it and CI said nothing. Only `sprite-runner` (sokol) was built, so the signal read "one backend broken" instead of "three examples broken, two untested" (#731). The same lane also FABRICATES breaks: it clones core/engine/gfx/null at `main` as siblings, and the assembler's auto-discovery builds those instead of the pins, so mid-release-train the four mains disagree and an unrelated PR goes red (#730, `backend_contract has no member named 'PixelWaterRgba'`; a re-run of the identical commit passed). * New job `bgfx examples (PINNED resolution)` — ubuntu, scratch LABELLE_HOME, NO runtime sibling checkouts — GENERATES AND BUILDS both bgfx examples against their declared `project.labelle` pins. It refuses to start if a runtime sibling exists, asserts each pinned version was fetched into the scratch home, and greps the install/generate logs for the assembler's own "using LOCAL sources" / "built from LOCAL sources" warnings — a mechanism assertion, not a value one. * The sibling lane is RENAMED "Examples integration (siblings @ main — cross-repo, may be mid-train)" and prints a banner of every sibling SHA/ref/describe before anything builds, so a mid-train red is recognised at a glance instead of debugged from scratch. Linux only (one platform catches a compile break in backend source), and on every PR rather than path-gated: the v1.32.0 break arrived from a dependency's release with no file in this repo changed, so a path filter would have skipped the job exactly when the break landed. Proof, on a mirrored checkout outside the toolkit tree with a scratch LABELLE_HOME (so pins really resolve from the registry): material-demo @ its own pins (core 1.32.0 / bgfx 0.20.0) install: fetching core 1.32.0, bgfx 0.20.0 (remote) generate: ok zig build -> exit 0, zig-out/bin/material_demo (36s) pack-city @ its own pins -> zig build exit 0 (25s) material-demo with bgfx re-pinned to the known-bad 0.13.1 (the #731 break) $ labelle-assembler generate -> exit 0 <-- old job: GREEN $ zig build -> exit 1 <-- new job: RED labelle-bgfx/src/gfx/texture.zig:469:12: error: switch must handle all possibilities labelle-core/src/backend_contract.zig:308:5: note: unhandled enumeration value: 'pixel_water' And the local-sources assertion, verified against a real sibling checkout: install: "core: using LOCAL sources from '…' — the pinned 1.32.0 will NOT be built (#685)" generate: "labelle: core is built from LOCAL sources, not the pinned 1.32.0 — source '…' (rev …)" ── #735: nothing ran the shader BUILD pipeline ────────────────────────── `test/material_pipeline_e2e.py` is the only test covering the PRODUCER side of game-owned materials (descriptor -> shaderc -> packaged variants -> a material that validates against core's contract). It was opt-in behind three `-D` flags because CI had no shaderc, so it never ran. Everything else covers CONSUMERS of already-compiled shaders, and the fixtures are pre-compiled — structurally unable to notice a pipeline regression. * New job `Material shader pipeline e2e (real shaderc)` provisions shaderc by REUSING the existing toolchain source rather than adding a second one: it reads the builtin bgfx provider version out of `src/config.zig`, reads that release's `zbgfx` archive URL out of labelle-bgfx's `build.zig.zon`, and builds `-Dwith_shaderc=true` from exactly that archive (cached on the URL; ~2.5 min cold locally). `--core` comes from the curated `core_version` default in `build.zig`, so there is no second pin to drift. * Nobody passes a flag by hand — the job derives all three. * Already independent of `examples/condenser`: the driver synthesizes its own three-material fixture under `.zig-cache/`. * `test/material_pipeline_e2e.py`: the missing-target assertion hard-coded `target requires 'spv'`, which is the LINUX answer. `material_build` picks the required variant per host (darwin -> mtl), so the test could not pass on macOS at all. It now follows the host. The driver already exercises five REJECTION paths beside the happy one, so it proves the pipeline fails closed: an include escaping the material dir, an uncompilable `.sc`, a descriptor missing the host's required variant, and two component-collision cases in the emitted comptime guard. Proof it catches a real producer-side regression that nothing else does — disabled include-tree tracking in `material_build.zig` so a changed `color.sh` no longer invalidates the shader cache: zig build test-materials -> exit 0 (448 tests, all green) zig build test-material-integration -> exit 1 AssertionError: shader fog (spv) (fog.spv.bin) success [not rebuilt] and, with the escaping-include rejection disabled: zig build test-material-integration -> exit 1 at build(False, "EscapingShaderInclude") Clean run on this branch: "PASS: 12 real shader variants, generated core descriptors, cached rebuild, include invalidation, escaping include rejection, compiler failure, missing target diagnostic". What broke
labelle-corev1.32.0 appendedMaterialEffect.pixel_water. That issource-breaking for any backend whose material seam switches exhaustively
over that enum — it stops compiling until it has a
.pixel_waterarm.Observed on the Examples integration test job (first surfaced on #730, but
latent on
main: assembler CI has not run since 2026-09-10):Why the version pins did not protect us
.github/workflows/ci.ymlcloneslabelle-coreatmainas a siblingcheckout. The assembler's monorepo auto-discovery (
cache/local.zig: findRepoRoot→populateFrameworkPackage(..., .discovered)) then builds thatsibling instead of the version the example pins, and says so:
Backends are not siblings in CI, so they are fetched at their pinned tag.
Net effect: old backend + brand-new core — the one combination nothing
guards.

four graphical examples pin
.backend_packageexplicitly), so the default bumpbelow is not what fixes CI — it repairs scaffolded projects, whose pins
the release workflow stamps at the current core (now 1.32.0).
What I bumped
Explicit example pins — each to the lowest backend release carrying the
fix:
sprite-runner: sokol0.5.0→0.6.0(declines the effect,@hasField-gated)material-demo: bgfx0.13.1→0.20.0(implements it, same gating)pack-city: bgfx0.13.1→0.20.0Builtin provider defaults (
src/config.zig: builtinProvider):.bgfx0.6.6→0.20.0.sokol0.2.1→0.6.0These are also the lowest-with-the-fix; they merely happen to be the newest,
because both backend fixes shipped the same day as the core release. There is
no older release to prefer.
Floor analysis (the thing worth reviewing):
@hasDecl(core.backend_contract, "MaterialEffect")(core ≥ v1.25.0) andeverything it needs from a later core carries its own comptime probe.
labelle-sokol's own examples still pin core
1.24.0.BackendTextureId(core#328 phase 3, core ≥ v1.28.0), and — unlike sokol— bgfx names
PixelWaterDraw/PIXEL_WATER_*frombackend_contractungated, so in practice it wants core ≥ v1.32.0. The code comment
says so and tells a project that must stay on an older core to pin
.backend_packageexplicitly rather than ride the default. That trade isunavoidable: no bgfx release is both pixel_water-safe and pre-0.15.
What I deliberately did NOT bump
tile-explorer(raylib0.3.0) — audited and confirmed: noMaterialEffectreference anywhere in labelle-raylib, and it builds cleanagainst core
main..null,.raylib,.sdl,.wgpubuiltin defaults — no materialseam, nothing to fix; bumping them would be unrelated churn.
.core_version/.engine_version/.gfx_versionpins —CI overrides them with the
mainsiblings anyway, and changing them wouldmix a runtime-train bump into a regression repair.
How this was verified
CI-shaped workspace: scratch
LABELLE_HOME, the assembler binary placed besidelabelle-core/-engine/-gfx/-nullsiblings atmainand nosokol/bgfx/raylib sibling — so frameworks come from the
maincheckouts (likeCI's clone step) and backends are fetched from the registry at the pinned tag
(like CI). The failure was reproduced first on sprite-runner at sokol
0.5.0, verbatim, before any edit.Every
install/generate/zig buildexit code checked separately(never through a pipe), and every generate log grepped for
generate failed(0 hits everywhere) so no run reused a stale artifact.
.backend_packageremovedbuild.zig.zonreads0.6.0.backend_packageremovedbuild.zig.zonreads0.20.0The two throwaway copies were deleted; they assert the mechanism (which
version the default actually resolved to), not just a green build.
zig build test→ exit 0.zig fmt --check→ exit 0 on the four touched Zig /.labellefiles. No test asserts the default version strings, so nothing elseneeded updating.
