A clone of a source with volumes takes clone-<target> on the source, and nothing ever deleted it, so once a clone existed the source could never be deleted through the API, which refuses a definition that has snapshots. rd d of a clone now reaps that snapshot, on both the REST and the CLI door.

Ownership is a prop the clone path stamps, never the name, so an operator's snapshot called clone-<target> is never touched. A snapshot another definition was restored from is kept. The reap marks the snapshot, lists dependents past the cache, and only then deletes; a restore reads its snapshot back past the cache once its definition exists and withdraws on a live mark, on a delete in flight, or on a snapshot that is gone. Whichever of the list and the create comes second sees the other. The store now surfaces DELETE on a snapshot a satellite finalizer still holds, and the snapshot list no longer stamps SUCCESSFUL beside it. A later rd d of the source names what is left and why, including a snapshot whose delete is already in flight, which only needs a retry.

A restore that withdraws takes its definition back through the rollback handshake, so one a retry adopted is left to it. A withdrawal caused only by a reap's mark answers a retryable 409; a snapshot that is gone answers 404. A kept or failed reap is a warning in the answer to the delete.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Deleting a clone now automatically removes its internally created snapshot when it is no longer in use. Operator-created snapshots and snapshots still needed by other definitions are retained.
    • Deletion refusals identify snapshots that must be addressed and provide recovery guidance.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Restores now detect snapshots that are being deleted or reaped, preventing incomplete restores and allowing safe retries.
    • Snapshots in the process of deletion are no longer reported as successful.

Walkthrough

Clone snapshots now record ownership and are reaped when their clone is deleted, unless another definition uses them. Deletion paths report retained snapshots. Restore paths check source availability and handle withdrawn snapshots before continuing.

Changes: Clone snapshot lifecycle

Clone snapshots record their owning clone. Resource-definition stores add uncached listing, and snapshot stores add conflict-safe property updates. Kubernetes snapshot projection exposes the deleting flag.
Reaping and classifying clone snapshots
pkg/store/clone_snapshot.go, pkg/store/clone_snapshot*_test.go, pkg/store/clone_snapshot_uncached_test.go, pkg/store/local_props.go
Reaping marks a snapshot before checking uncached definition references. The store classifies and explains snapshots that remain after a clone is removed. Clone-specific marks do not travel with copied properties.
Clone deletion and leftover handling
pkg/rest/resource_definitions.go, pkg/rest/rd_delete_clone_snapshot*_test.go, internal/cli/write.go, internal/cli/rd_delete_clone_snapshot*_test.go, docs/cli-parity-known-deltas.md, tests/e2e/cli-matrix/rd-clone-retry-semantics.sh, tests/operator-harness/replay/rd-clone-retry-semantics.yaml
CLI and REST deletion paths check for leftover snapshots and attempt to reap owned snapshots. Tests cover retained snapshots, refusals, and deletion outcomes. Teardown examples remove clones before their source.
Restore source checks and rollback
pkg/store/clone_snapshot.go, internal/cli/snapshot.go, internal/cli/snapshot_restore_withdraw_test.go, pkg/rest/snapshot_restore.go, pkg/rest/snapshot_restore_withdraw_test.go, pkg/rest/nodes.go, pkg/rest/snapshots.go, pkg/rest/snapshots_test.go, docs/cli-parity-known-deltas.md
Restore paths check whether the source snapshot is missing, deleting, or being reaped. REST restore compensates for newly created targets when needed and leaves adopted targets in place.

Andrei Kvapil (@kvaps) NOT LGTM, one blocker. A reap that keeps the snapshot can take off the mark of another reap that is still running, and nothing tests that it doesn't. The rest of the reap and restore protocol held up in my testing.

Business context: deleting a clone now reaps the clone-<target> snapshot the clone path took on the source. Without that, the source could never be deleted through the API again.

Blocker: two reaps of the same snapshot can't tell their marks apart (pkg/store/clone_snapshot.go:147 and :219).

The mark is <clone>@<RFC 3339>, so it only goes down to the second. dropReapingMark checks "still mine" by string equality. Two reaps of one clone started in the same second write the same mark, and each one reads the other's as its own.

Two reaps can overlap through the CLI. It ignores NotFound from ResourceDefinitions().Delete (internal/cli/write.go:395) and still runs the reap. So two rd d <clone> runs (two CLI runs, or the CLI racing a REST delete) both reap once both have read the definition. The REST door is safe: a second Delete of a definition with no finalizer returns NotFound, and the handler returns before the reap.

The failing order: A marks. B writes the identical mark. B lists and finds no dependents. A restore R creates its definition. A lists, sees R and keeps, and its dropReapingMark removes B's mark. R reads the snapshot back and finds no live mark and no DELETE flag yet, so it goes on. Then B deletes the snapshot R restores from.

The guard has no test. I removed the != mark comparison and pkg/store, internal/cli and the related pkg/rest tests all stayed green. Out of 28 mutations over the reap, the restore read-back and the delete report, it was the only one that survived.

Fix: make the mark unique per reap, for example a random token or UnixNano next to the time the TTL reads. Then add a store test where a second reap's mark is still on the snapshot after the first reap keeps it.

Non-blocking:

  1. The owner check reads the snapshot through the cache (clone_snapshot.go:67). The k8s Snapshots().Get has no live fallback on NotFound. A delete served by a replica whose informer hasn't seen the snapshot yet, like a clone deleted right after it was created, skips the reap with no warning, and the snapshot stays until rd d of the source names it. Other read errors are dropped the same way. The rest of the reap already uses uncachedSnapshot, and it would fit here too.
  2. The two new props can travel onto snapshots an operator takes. DropCloneSnapshotMarks strips them on the restore paths, but store.TravellingProps, which s c uses to copy a definition's props onto the snapshot, keeps them. They are also not in serverOwnedDefinitionProps, so rd sp and rd c accept them. If the owner prop ever gets set on a definition, every later snapshot of it claims ownership the clone path never gave. Adding both keys to TravellingProps and the server-owned list closes that.
  3. CI: E2E (lane 2) is red on this head on recovery-node-id-mismatch (worker-2 stayed Inconsistent after the tamper bounce). That scenario makes no snapshot or clone and deletes no clone, so I don't see how this diff gets there, but it needs a green run before merge. Locally, pkg/rest fails only on the server did not stop within 2s harness timeout, which also fails without this change.

Second resolution, so two reaps of this clone started in the same second write equal marks, and dropReapingMark at :219 takes the other reap's mark as its own. A per-reap token here would make that comparison mean what the commit message says.

Thanks, head 0c79f96 (rebased onto main after #190 merged).

The reaping mark is <clone>#<token>@<time> now, with a random token per reap, so two reaps started in the same second never share one. TestKeepingAReapLeavesAnotherReapsMark runs your order at the store level: the first reap keeps the snapshot and the second reap's mark stays. Removing the != mark check or fixing the token turns it red.

Both non-blocking ones are in: the owner check reads the snapshot past the cache, and the owner and reaping props no longer travel onto an operator's snapshot and are refused on definition edits.

Andrei Kvapil (@kvaps) NOT LGTM, one blocker. The per-reap token fixes the equal-mark case, but a second reap still writes over the first reap's mark. So a reap that keeps the snapshot can still leave a running reap with no mark on it.

Previous points:

  1. Equal marks in one second: fixed. Removing the != mark check now fails TestKeepingAReapLeavesAnotherReapsMark, and a constant token also fails TestReapingMarksOfOneSecondDiffer.
  2. Cached owner read: fixed. Switching OwnedCloneSnapshot back to Snapshots().Get fails TestOwnedCloneSnapshotReportsAReadFailure.
  3. Marks travelling onto snapshots: fixed in TravellingProps, and TestCloneSnapshotMarksDoNotTravel catches the removal of either key. The server-owned list half has no test, see below.
  4. E2E lane 2 is green on this head.

Blocker: a reap writes its mark over whatever mark is already there (pkg/store/clone_snapshot.go:231). Order: reap A marks, reap B marks over it, A lists and finds no dependents. B keeps the snapshot (its list failed, or it saw a restore that has since withdrawn), and its dropReapingMark takes off B's mark, which is the only one left. A restore that creates its definition now reads the snapshot back, finds no mark and no DELETE flag, and goes on. Then A deletes the snapshot. I ran exactly this order against the in-memory store: mark a, mark b, keepCloneSnapshot with b, and RestoreSourceWithdrawn returns nil while A still has its delete to make. It's the same two CLI reaps as before.

The check-then-write in dropReapingMark has the same gap in a smaller window. The k8s Snapshots().Update re-reads the object and writes the caller's props over it with no resourceVersion precondition (pkg/store/k8s/snapshots.go:240). A mark B writes between A's read at :246 and A's update gets erased too.

Fix: a reap that finds another reap's live mark should not write over it. That reap owns the decision, so this one can return. Both writes also need a precondition, a conditional update on the resourceVersion that was read or a patch that tests the old value, because right now any read-modify-write of snapshot props is last writer wins. A store test with the order above, where the restore has to withdraw, would pin it.

The fix-up commits also need folding. The squash takes every commit message (COMMIT_MESSAGES), so the three fix-ups land on main describing a bug main never had ("The mark was the clone and the time to the second..."). Please fold them into the feature commit.

Non-blocking:

  1. Three claims in the fix-ups have no test. Removing either new key from serverOwnedDefinitionProps keeps pkg/store, internal/cli and pkg/rest green. So does returning nil instead of the error when OwnedCloneSnapshot fails to read the definition. So does dropping the error at either door (internal/cli/write.go:384, pkg/rest/resource_definitions.go:1249). The last commit is about exactly that error, and its store test only checks that the lookup returns it.
  2. Two jobs are red on this head (run of 2026-10-26T14:09Z, attempt 1). E2E (lane 1) failed state-standalone-partition with "did not converge to healthy state within 60s". The drbdsetup status dump right under that line shows both peers Connected, Established and UpToDate, and the last token read was empty. That scenario applies its CRDs with kubectl and makes no snapshot, clone or REST delete. Integration tests failed TestGroupFRDeleteCascadesSnapshots at group_f_test.go:477, where a Resource never appeared during setup, before the definition delete this diff touches. The same test also failed on the #221 run, at a later step. I don't see a path from this diff to either failure, but both need a green run.
  3. The PR body still opens with "Stacked on #190", and the base is main now.
  4. This conflicts with #218 in pkg/rest/rd_clone.go.

Thanks, head ac32551, one commit now.

The mark is set and taken off through a new SnapshotStore.PatchSnapshotProps: it decides on the snapshot as the API server holds it and updates under the resourceVersion it read, re-running on a conflict. In memory it runs under the store lock. A reap that finds another reap's live mark stands down and leaves it, since that reap owns the decision.

  • TestARestoreStillSeesTheFirstReapAfterASecondOneKeeps runs your order: A marks, B stands down without touching the mark, the snapshot stays, and RestoreSourceWithdrawn still refuses.
  • TestASecondReapLeavesTheFirstReapsMark pins the stand-down.
  • TestPatchSnapshotPropsSeesAWriteInBetween injects a write between the read and the update in the k8s store and checks the patch decides again on the fresh props.

Non-blocking 1: both new keys are in the RD modify refusal table, the definition read error has its own store test, and TestRDDeleteStopsWhenTheCloneSnapshotCannotBeRead / TestRDDeleteCLIStopsWhenTheCloneSnapshotCannotBeRead pin both doors. Dropping the error at either door turns its test red. "Stacked on #190" is gone from the body. I'll resolve the #218 conflict in rd_clone.go on whichever lands second.

Andrei Kvapil (@kvaps) NOT LGTM, one blocker. The code is fine now, the commit message is not.

The commit message is 38,446 lines, 1.8 MB. After its own text and the Assisted-by: LLM line, it carries the message of every commit on main, from #190 back to the first commit of the repo: 1,615 conventional-commit headers. The squash takes every commit message (COMMIT_MESSAGES), so all of that would land on main as one commit body. The commit's own part has no Signed-off-by. The only one is the last line of the pasted history, from the oldest commit, and DCO is red on this head ("one commit incorrectly signed off"). It was green on 966848c. Please cut the message after the Assisted-by: LLM line and sign it off.

Previous points:

  1. A second reap writing over a live mark: fixed. Disabling the stand-down in setReapingMark fails TestASecondReapLeavesTheFirstReapsMark and TestARestoreStillSeesTheFirstReapAfterASecondOneKeeps. Disabling the ownership check in dropReapingMark fails the first one.
  2. Last writer wins on snapshot props: fixed. An update with an empty resourceVersion, or without the conflict retry, fails TestPatchSnapshotPropsSeesAWriteInBetween. No production code calls the unconditional Snapshots().Update anymore.
  3. Fix-up commits: folded into one. That fold is where the pasted history came from.
  4. Untested claims: all pinned. Removing either key from serverOwnedDefinitionProps fails TestRDModifyRefusesEditsOfServerOwnedProps. Returning nil on an unreadable definition fails TestOwnedCloneSnapshotReportsAnUnreadableDefinition. Dropping the error at the CLI or REST door fails TestRDDeleteCLIStopsWhenTheCloneSnapshotCannotBeRead or TestRDDeleteStopsWhenTheCloneSnapshotCannotBeRead.
  5. Red CI: every job except DCO is green on this head (run of 2026-10-27T18:45Z).
  6. "Stacked on #190": gone from the body.
  7. Conflict with #218: still there, in internal/cli/snapshot.go, pkg/rest/nodes.go, pkg/rest/rd_clone.go, pkg/rest/snapshot_restore.go and pkg/store/local_props.go. It also conflicts with #217 in pkg/store/k8s/snapshots.go, with #222 in pkg/store/local_props.go, and with #221.

Main moved to ffd7b90 today. The trial merge with it is clean, build and vet pass, and pkg/store/..., internal/cli/... and pkg/api/... are green. pkg/rest fails only on the 2s server-stop timeout at server_test.go:102, on different tests each run. Main fails the same way.

A clone of a source with volumes takes `clone-<target>` on the source
and restores from it, and nothing ever deleted that snapshot. Deleting
the clone left it behind, and the source could then never be deleted
again through the API, which refuses a definition that has snapshots.
Every CSI clone goes through this path.

`rd d` of a clone now reaps that snapshot, on both the REST and the
CLI door. Ownership is a prop the clone path stamps on the snapshot,
never its name, so an operator's snapshot called `clone-<target>` is
never touched. The owner and reaping props never travel from a
definition onto a snapshot, and definition edits refuse them. A
lookup that cannot read the definition or its snapshot stops the
delete before anything is removed, since the definition's props are
the only record of the snapshot.

The snapshot is visible in `s l`, so another definition can have been
restored from it, and that definition keeps reading it: new replicas
are pinned to its nodes and restored from it by name. A dependent
appears in two steps, the snapshot read and the definition create, so
no list on the reap's side alone can see one between them. The reap
marks the snapshot, then lists dependents past the cache, and only
then deletes; a restore creates its definition, then reads the
snapshot back past the cache and withdraws on a live mark, on a
snapshot whose delete is in flight, or on one that is gone. Whichever
of the list and the create comes second sees the other. Each reap's
mark carries a token of its own, and the mark is set and taken off by
a patch that decides on the snapshot as the API server holds it and
writes only if nobody wrote in between. A reap that finds another
reap's live mark stands down, since that reap owns the decision; one
that keeps the snapshot takes off only its own mark.

A withdrawal takes the definition the restore created back through
the rollback, with its handshake: one a retry of the same restore
adopted in the meantime is left to that retry. A withdrawal caused
only by a reap's mark answers a retryable 409, since the reap may yet
keep the snapshot; a snapshot that is gone, or whose delete was
issued, answers 404 as before. The CLI checks the snapshot back the
same way before it places replicas on a target it marked, a prepared
one or its own leftover.

The reap runs after the definition is deleted and before the delete
is answered, detached from its caller on a 30s budget, and a mark
left by a process that died expires. A kept or failed reap is logged
and carried in the answer to the delete as a warning; the delete
stands either way. A delete that was issued is read off the snapshot
itself: the store now surfaces DELETE on a snapshot a finalizer still
holds, the way it does for resources, and the snapshot list no longer
stamps SUCCESSFUL beside it.

A later `rd d` of the source names what is still there: a snapshot
safe to delete, one being deleted that needs only a retry shortly,
one kept because a named definition restores from it, and one that
looks like a clone's but was never stamped.

Thanks, head f444a38. The message is cut after its own Assisted-by line and signed off; I'd built it from git log --format=%B without -1, which is where the pasted history came from. The tree is the same as 79cc0e5.

Andrei Kvapil (@kvaps) LGTM. The commit message is fixed: 63 lines, the PR's own text with one Assisted-by: LLM and your Signed-off-by. DCO is green on f444a38. The tree is byte-identical to 79cc0e5 on the same parent, so the code points I checked there still hold. I mutated two of the fixes again on a trial merge with main (ffd7b90). Without the stand-down in setReapingMark, or with an empty resourceVersion in PatchSnapshotProps, the tests that pin them go red.

The one red job doesn't look caused by this diff. In E2E lane 1, state-standalone-partition timed out waiting for the partition to heal (tests/e2e/state-standalone-partition.sh:333). The status dump printed right after shows both peers Connected and UpToDate, so DRBD reconnected just past the deadline. That scenario is an iptables partition and a kernel reconnect, and nothing in this diff is on that path. The same tree passed lane 1 on 2026-10-27. I couldn't find this scenario failing on an unrelated commit in the last 100 runs, though. It failed once before, on this PR at 966848c. So I don't call it a known flake.

The overlap with #218 is still there, plus one clash git doesn't show. The five content conflicts remain: internal/cli/snapshot.go, pkg/rest/nodes.go, pkg/rest/rd_clone.go, pkg/rest/snapshot_restore.go and pkg/store/local_props.go. Separately, #218 adds pkg/store/restore_source.go with its own ErrRestoreSourceWithdrawn, RestoreSourceWithdrawn and uncachedSnapshot. This PR defines the same three in pkg/store/clone_snapshot.go. With that file dropped into the trial merge, go build ./pkg/store/ fails with three "redeclared in this block" errors. Whichever PR lands second has to drop one copy.

Other overlaps are unchanged: #217 in pkg/store/k8s/snapshots.go, #222 in pkg/store/local_props.go, and #221 in many files.
