feat(storage): a local SQLite store several processes can share - #996
Proposal item 4.5: a local SQLite store that several processes on one machine can share.
The reported problem: about ten local agent processes on one SQLite file failed with "database is locked". They
opened a connection per call, every waiting process wrote every 3 s, and the journal was in rollback mode. The SQLite
storage FrontMCP ships could not replace that code safely:
SqliteStorageAdapter was not atomic across processes. set(..., { ifNotExists }) checked and then set, and incr read, added and wrote back, so two processes could both take an NX lock or lose an increment. It had no deleteIfEquals/expireIfEquals, so DistributedSemaphore (and so tool concurrency on throttle.storage)
refused it with GUARD_STORAGE_UNSUPPORTED.
Every store opened its own connection, even on the same file in the same process.
Waiting for another process's lock happened inside SQLite (busy_timeout), which blocks the event loop for up to
5 s; the retry around the WAL switch slept with Atomics.wait.
createStorage() had no sqlite type, and app code had no supported way to get a SQLite-backed storage.
What this PR changes:
Atomic operations. A conditional set (ifNotExists/ifExists), delete, incr/incrBy/decr, and the new deleteIfEquals and expireIfEquals each read and write inside one BEGIN IMMEDIATE transaction, which takes the
file's write lock before the read. TTL semantics match the memory and Redis adapters: an expired key is missing for
every operation (expire() on one now returns false), expire/expireIfEquals reject a TTL that is not a
positive integer with StorageTTLError, incr on an expired counter starts from 0 without the old TTL, and a
non-integer value throws StorageOperationError (was a plain Error). DistributedSemaphore works on SQLite.
One connection per file per process.acquireConnection() (new, in sqlite-connection.ts) caches a
connection by resolved path; the KV, session, elicitation, task and event stores and the adapter all take theirs from
it, and it closes when the last store on the file releases it. :memory: stays private per store. A later store
that asks for WAL switches the file to it, and the longest busyTimeoutMs requested applies.
Waiting without blocking. Each connection has a queue: the adapter's operations run on it one at a time, in
call order, with busy_timeout = 0; on SQLITE_BUSY the operation backs off on a timer (2 ms doubling to 50 ms,
with jitter) and retries until busyTimeoutMs has passed, then rejects with the SQLITE_BUSY error. The wait counts
from the call, restarting whenever an earlier queued operation gets the lock, so while another process keeps the lock
every queued operation fails within busyTimeoutMs of its call instead of one timeout after another. disconnect() lets the operations already called finish before it closes the file. The periodic sweeps of expired
KV keys and events run on the same queue, so they no longer block the event loop or throw SQLITE_BUSY out of a
timer. A store whose setup fails releases the connection it took, and a store opened after a shared handle was
closed directly gets a new connection. The stores'
synchronous methods keep the connection's busy_timeout, so the session, task, elicitation and event stores still
wait synchronously for at most busyTimeoutMs; opening a store (WAL switch, schema) keeps its bounded synchronous
retry. Both are documented.
createStorage({ type: 'sqlite', sqlite: { path, walMode?, busyTimeoutMs?, ttlCleanupIntervalMs?, encryption? } }). @frontmcp/utils loads @frontmcp/storage-sqlite with a require on first use, following the factory pattern. The
package name is kept out of a string literal: storage-sqlite depends on utils, and a literal would make Nx and
bundlers see a cycle. The sqlite block is validated with a Zod schema before any fallback, so a mistake throws StorageConfigError (Invalid sqlite configuration: sqlite.path: is required (the path of the database file))
even with fallback: 'memory'. A missing package throws StorageConfigError naming npm install @frontmcp/storage-sqlite, or falls back to memory with a warning when fallback: 'memory', as the other backends
do. This also makes throttle.storage and the plugins that take a StorageConfig (Remember, Approval) work on
SQLite.
App code gets a SQLite storage from the SDK.sqliteStorageProvider({ path, prefix?, provide?, ...options })
returns a GLOBAL provider of a RootStorage under SqliteStorageToken (or the provide token). It opens the file
at boot with fallback: 'error' (it never silently becomes per-process memory), so an invalid option or a missing
package fails the boot, and it disconnects in onShutdown() (M01). It works in createContainer() scripts.
Docs.setup-sqlite gains the journal-mode trade-offs (WAL needs a local filesystem and leaves -wal/-shm
files; the rollback journal suits mostly-read files), busy-timeout guidance, and the several-processes model.
Different from the plan, and why:
The compound operations are one short BEGIN IMMEDIATE transaction each, not single INSERT … ON CONFLICT / RETURNING statements. The store can encrypt values (AES-GCM, random IV), and SQL cannot compare or add to
ciphertext, so single statements would need a second, encryption-only code path. The transaction takes the same
write lock up front and costs the same commit as a single statement, and it reuses the store's expiry and
decryption logic for both cases.
The options go under sqlite: { path }, like redis, upstash, vercelKv and cloudflareKv, rather than a
top-level path.
The SDK side is an explicit provider, not a token the top-level sqlite option fills in. Tying it to sqlite would
open the sessions file at boot for every server that sets sqlite, even under stdio where nothing opened it before,
and would put app keys in the sessions file. The explicit provider names its own file and prefix, and works in createContainer().
Only the adapter's operations go through the non-blocking queue; the built-in stores' internals stay synchronous
(see above). Moving them is a larger change to the task store's orphan detection and is left for later.
User-facing change
What changed: new storage type createStorage({ type: 'sqlite', sqlite: { … } }) and type SqliteAdapterOptions (@frontmcp/utils); new sqliteStorageProvider(), SqliteStorageToken and SqliteStorageProviderOptions (@frontmcp/sdk); new acquireConnection(), SqliteConnection, isBusyError() and SqliteKvStore.getConnection() (@frontmcp/storage-sqlite); SqliteStorageAdapter gains atomic deleteIfEquals/expireIfEquals and becomes atomic across processes; stores on one file share one connection.
throttle.storage: { type: 'sqlite', sqlite: { path } } with concurrency limits: GUARD_STORAGE_UNSUPPORTED →
works, shared by the processes on the machine.
Two processes taking an ifNotExists lock, or incrementing one counter, on the same file: both could win / an
increment could be lost → one holder / every increment counted.
Waiting for another process's lock through the adapter: blocks the event loop up to busyTimeoutMs → timers keep
running.
SqliteStorageAdapter.disconnect() with operations still queued: they failed with The database connection is not open → they finish first.
The KV and event stores' periodic sweep while another process held the write lock: ran synchronously, stalling the
event loop for up to busyTimeoutMs, and past it threw SQLITE_BUSY from the timer (an uncaught exception) →
runs on the connection's queue without blocking, and a failed sweep is retried at the next interval.
SqliteStorageAdapter.expire() on an expired key: true → false. expire()/expireIfEquals() with a TTL of 0,
a negative or a fraction: accepted → StorageTTLError. incr on a non-integer: Error → StorageOperationError (same message text: is not an integer). SqliteKvStore.expire() on an expired key: true → false.
SqliteKvStore.close() (and the event and task stores' close()/destroy()): closed the database → releases the
shared connection, which closes when the last store on the file releases it. getDatabase() returns the shared
handle, so closing it directly closes it for the other stores on the file.
GuardStorageUnsupportedError and the base adapter's StorageNotSupportedError messages list SQLite among the
backends with an atomic compare-and-delete.
Skills catalog entries updated:frontmcp-setup/references/setup-sqlite.md (journal-mode table, several
processes, busy timeout, "SQLite storage in your own code", the kv table name), new example frontmcp-setup/examples/setup-sqlite/multi-process-storage.md (manifest and frontmcp-setup/SKILL.md tables), frontmcp-config/references/configure-throttle.md (SQLite throttle.storage), create-tool/references/throttling.md
(backends with compare-and-delete), and the kv_store → kv fix in the other setup-sqlite examples.
sqlite-connection.spec.ts: stores on one file share one connection; relative and absolute paths match; the
connection closes with the last store and a double close() does not close it for another store; :memory:
stays private; a later store switches the file to WAL and the longest busy timeout wins; queued operations run in
call order; a throwing write rolls back and the next one runs; a non-busy error is not retried; a lock held by
another connection is waited for while a 10 ms timer keeps ticking, and the connection's busy_timeout is
restored; past busyTimeoutMs the operation rejects with SQLITE_BUSY, and works again once the lock is gone;
five operations queued behind a held lock all reject within busyTimeoutMs of their call (they took 100–500 ms
one after another before); the KV and event stores' sweeps neither stall the event loop nor throw while the lock
is held; a KV, event or task store whose setup fails (SQLITE_NOTADB) releases the connection; a store opened
after the shared handle was closed directly gets a new one.
sqlite-storage.adapter.spec.ts: for incr, NX set, XX set, delete, deleteIfEquals and expireIfEquals,
another connection that tries to write between the read and the write gets SQLITE_BUSY (the operation holds the
write lock throughout); compare-and-act on match, mismatch, missing and expired keys; encrypted values; TTL
parity (expired keys, invalid TTLs, incr on an expired counter, StorageOperationError); disconnect() lets
the operations already called finish.
sqlite-semaphore.spec.ts: DistributedSemaphore on SQLite accepts the adapter, gives one slot to one caller
across two adapters on the file, hands a released slot to a queued caller, and a stale release does not free
another ticket's slot.
Unit, @frontmcp/utils (1917 pass): createStorage({ type: 'sqlite' }) round-trip across two storages on the
file with a prefix; invalid sqlite blocks rejected with StorageConfigError even with fallback: 'memory'; the
missing-package message; the memory fallback in development; other load failures rethrown.
Unit, @frontmcp/sdk (568 suites, 7233 pass): sqliteStorageProvider() in createContainer() (storage under
the token, disconnected by dispose(), data kept for the next process, custom token and prefix, invalid options and
a missing package fail the boot).
E2E, new app apps/e2e/demo-e2e-local-runtime (3 pass). It has a fixture/ of worker scripts run with tsx from
source, and e2e/helpers/workers.ts (spawnWorker, runTogether, killAll) with a small line protocol
(fixture/worker-protocol.ts) for later PRs that start many processes.
sqlite-contention.e2e.spec.ts, in WAL and in rollback-journal mode: ten processes increment one counter 40 times
each while an eleventh holds the write lock for 1 s. The returned values are exactly 1..400 and the file holds 400;
no error (no SQLITE_BUSY) reaches a caller; one process holds the NX lock and one the semaphore slot; and the
longest gap between a process's 5 ms timer ticks stays under 500 ms (measured 7–25 ms), with the expired-key sweep
running every 200 ms. Checked red: with the queue's wait moved back into SQLite the gaps are 1000–1800 ms and the
spec fails; with the sweep run synchronously, as before, they are 1041–1376 ms; and with incr outside its
transaction the values repeat.
sqlite-storage-provider.e2e.spec.ts: three processes read SqliteStorageToken from createContainer(), share
one counter (values exactly 1..60), and exit after dispose().
E2E, demo-e2e-dts-consumer (9 pass): sqlite-storage-must-compile.ts types sqliteStorageProvider(), its
options (path required, walMode boolean) and the storage SqliteStorageToken resolves to.
Regression:guard (271), auth (2810), skills (249), and the SQLite-backed e2e apps demo-e2e-local-auth, demo-e2e-cli-tasks and demo-e2e-unix-socket (97 tests) pass.
Checks: lint (no new warnings), build for utils, storage-sqlite, guard, sdk, skills; the built @frontmcp/utils loads the SQLite storage from both its CommonJS and ESM builds; the Nx project graph has no utils → storage-sqlite edge; tsc --noEmit over every changed file; prettier.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added SQLite storage for sharing counters, locks, and rate limits across processes on the same machine.
Added an SDK provider and configuration options for database paths, journal mode, timeouts, cleanup, and encryption.
Added atomic compare-and-delete and compare-and-expire operations for SQLite storage.
Bug Fixes
Invalid SQLite settings now produce configuration errors rather than silently falling back to memory.
Improved SQLite behavior under cross-process contention and concurrent operations.
Documentation
Added guidance and examples for configuring SQLite storage across local processes.
- SqliteStorageAdapter: conditional set, delete, incr, deleteIfEquals and
expireIfEquals each run in one BEGIN IMMEDIATE transaction, so they are
atomic across processes; expire and expireIfEquals validate the TTL and
treat an expired key as missing, like the memory and Redis adapters.
DistributedSemaphore now works on SQLite.
- One connection per database file per process, shared by every store on
the file, with a queue that runs the adapter's operations in order and
waits for another process's lock on a timer instead of blocking the
event loop.
- createStorage({ type: 'sqlite', sqlite: { path } }) loads
@frontmcp/storage-sqlite on demand; an invalid sqlite block throws
StorageConfigError whatever the fallback.
- SDK: sqliteStorageProvider() and SqliteStorageToken give providers and
tools a SQLite-backed storage, disconnected at shutdown.
- New e2e app demo-e2e-local-runtime: ten processes contend on one file.
…ue the expiry sweeps
- A queued operation's busy timeout counts from its call, restarting when an earlier queued
operation gets the lock, so a held lock no longer makes queued operations time out one after another.
- SqliteStorageAdapter.disconnect() lets the operations already called finish before closing the file.
- The KV and event stores run their periodic sweeps on the connection's queue: no event-loop stall,
and no SQLITE_BUSY thrown from the timer while another process holds the lock.
- A store whose setup fails releases the shared connection, and a handle closed directly is replaced
for the stores opened after it.

Walkthrough
The change adds SQLite as a storage option, exposes an SDK provider, and coordinates store operations through shared SQLite connections. It also adds unit, type, and multi-process E2E coverage, plus setup and throttling documentation for local processes sharing a database file.
Changes: SQLite local storage

Summary
Storage configuration and provider libs/utils/src/storage/types.ts, libs/utils/src/storage/factory.ts, libs/utils/src/storage/*, libs/sdk/src/storage/*, libs/sdk/src/index.ts, apps/e2e/demo-e2e-dts-consumer/*
The storage configuration and factory now support SQLite options. The SDK exports a SQLite provider, token, and options type. Provider tests and a strict consumer fixture check registration, persistence, configuration errors, and types.
Stores now share managed connections for file paths. The connection queues reads and writes, retries SQLite busy errors within the configured timeout, and releases the database after its final reference closes. The adapter routes operations through the connection and implements conditional delete and expiration.
Storage and connection tests libs/storage-sqlite/src/__tests__/*, libs/utils/src/storage/__tests__/factory.spec.ts, libs/utils/jest.config.ts, libs/storage-sqlite/jest.config.ts
Tests cover connection reuse, queued operations, lock contention, semaphore behavior, adapter operations, and SQLite configuration and loading behavior.
The E2E project adds worker helpers and fixtures. Tests check shared increments and lock behavior across processes in WAL and rollback-journal modes.

libs/storage-sqlite/src/sqlite-storage.adapter.ts:70-79 Minor · Stability & Availability · Quick win
Route ping() through the connection queue.
ping() calls this.kv.has(...) directly. Every other adapter operation now runs through this.connection.read or this.connection.write. Those methods wait for foreign locks with timers.
The direct call runs with the connection's full busy_timeout, which is 5000 ms by default. If another process holds a lock that blocks readers, ping() blocks the event loop for up to that long. That happens in rollback-journal mode while a writer commits. This removes the guarantee that the class documentation states at Line 17. A periodic health check is a likely caller.
Use connection.read so the wait uses timers and the call keeps its order relative to other queued operations.
Proposed fix
if (!this.connected) return false;
try {
// A cheap no-op query to confirm the handle is alive.
- this.kv.has('__frontmcp_ping__');+ await this.connection.read(() => this.kv.has('__frontmcp_ping__'));
return true;
} catch {
return false;
}

Use @frontmcp/utils for the temporary-directory filesystem calls.
This spec imports fs, os and path directly. It uses fs.mkdtempSync at Line 21 and fs.rmSync at Line 27. The repository rule for libs/sdk sources forbids direct node:fs use. @frontmcp/utils exports mkdtemp, rm and pathJoin. Use them in beforeEach and afterEach, which can be async. os.tmpdir() can stay.
Based on learnings: "Always use @frontmcp/utils for file system operations (readFile, writeFile, readJSON, writeJSON, mkdir, rm, access, etc.) — never use fs/promises or node:fs directly".

Manage the lock for the duration of the work.
The example never releases this lock, so a completed reindex blocks new claims for up to five minutes. If a reindex takes longer than five minutes, another process can claim the lock while it is still running. Show the work inside the lease, renew it while needed, and release it with deleteIfEquals in a finally block.

ping() queried the database directly with the full busy timeout, so a commit
from another process in rollback-journal mode blocked the event loop for up
to busyTimeoutMs. It now waits on the queue with timers like every other
operation.
Also: the e2e worker helper resolves on close so the last stdout lines are
read; the lock example takes a unique token and releases it; the createStorage
lock snippets set fallback: 'error'; WAL backups use VACUUM INTO.
Answers to the review-body findings of the review on 980223c:
Outside diff, ping() (sqlite-storage.adapter.ts): reproduced and fixed in e8791e0. With walMode: false and another connection holding BEGIN EXCLUSIVE, ping() blocked the event loop for the full 5000 ms busy timeout and returned false, even though the lock was released after 100 ms. It now runs through connection.read, so it waits with timers and keeps its order in the queue. New test: "pings without blocking the event loop while a commit locks readers out" in sqlite-connection.spec.ts.
Additional, the lock in multi-process-storage.md is never released: fixed in e8791e0 with the unique-token change (deleteIfEquals in a finally).
Nitpick, fs/path in sqlite-storage.provider.spec.ts: not changed. The @frontmcp/utils file-system rule covers library code; specs that need a throwaway directory use fs.mkdtempSync/fs.rmSync across the repo, as the storage-sqlite specs this one follows do.
Also merged feat/m01-provider-lifecycle (b0e2535, 8b7c20f) into this branch. Local runs: nx test storage-sqlite 237/237, nx test skills 249/249, nx test demo-e2e-local-runtime 3/3, SDK provider/app/front-mcp suites 290/290.
Do not suggest walMode: false as a way to convert an existing WAL database.
The preceding guidance states that a database remains in WAL mode after it is switched. The configuration only enables WAL; it does not switch an existing database back. Users following this troubleshooting step can still receive WAL errors on a network mount.
Tell users to move the database to local storage, or migrate it to a new rollback-journal database.
Suggested wording
-| WAL errors on network mount | WAL mode requires a local filesystem with shared-memory support | Move the database to a local disk or set `walMode: false` |+| WAL errors on network mount | WAL mode requires a local filesystem with shared-memory support | Move the database to local storage; setting `walMode: false` does not revert an existing WAL database |

Make expired-row cleanup conditional or transactional.
87-87: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Make expired-row cleanup conditional or transactional.
SqliteStorageAdapter.get() runs this.kv.get(key) through connection.read(). read() queues the callback but does not start a transaction. SqliteKvStore.get() selects the row and then unconditionally deletes it when expired.
A process can replace the row between those statements. The delete can then remove the fresh value. Make the delete conditional on the row still being expired, or run the complete kv.get(key) call through connection.write().
Suggested conditional delete
- del: this.db.prepare('DELETE FROM kv WHERE key = ?'),+ del: this.db.prepare('DELETE FROM kv WHERE key = ?'),+ delExpired: this.db.prepare(+ 'DELETE FROM kv WHERE key = ? AND expires_at IS NOT NULL AND expires_at <= ?',+ ),
...
if (row.expires_at !== null && row.expires_at <= Date.now()) {
- stmts.del.run(key);+ stmts.delExpired.run(key, Date.now());
return null;

Review comment at @libs/storage-sqlite/src/sqlite-storage.adapter.ts at line 87:
Update SqliteKvStore.get so expiration cleanup deletes a row only if it is still
expired when the delete runs; alternatively, route the complete kv.get(key) call
in SqliteStorageAdapter.get through connection.write to make the read-and-delete
operation transactional. Preserve the existing behavior of returning null for an
expired value.
get() read an expired row and then deleted the key unconditionally, outside a
transaction, so a value another process wrote between the two statements was
deleted. The purge now deletes the row only if it is still expired.
Also: the WAL troubleshooting row no longer suggests walMode: false for an
existing WAL file.
Answers to the two outside-diff findings of the review on e8791e0:
Expired-row cleanup in SqliteKvStore.get(): reproduced and fixed in 5ea8167. get() read the expired row and then ran DELETE FROM kv WHERE key = ? as a separate statement, so a value another process wrote in between was deleted. The purge now runs DELETE ... WHERE key = ? AND expires_at IS NOT NULL AND expires_at <= ?, so it deletes only a row that is still expired. New test: "keeps the value another process writes between reading an expired key and purging it" in sqlite-connection.spec.ts (failed before, passes now).
walMode: false in the WAL troubleshooting row of setup-sqlite.md: fixed in 5ea8167. The row now says to move the database to a local disk, and that walMode: false only keeps a new file out of WAL.

Apply the get() expired-key fix to ttl().
This PR changes get() to call delExpired.run(key, now). That call deletes the row only if it is still expired. ttl() has the same read-then-delete sequence, but it still runs the unconditional stmts.del.run(key) at Line 246.
Another process can overwrite the key between the ttl read at Line 240 and the delete at Line 246. Then ttl() deletes the fresh value. This is the same lost-write scenario the new get() test covers, and it matters for locks that use ttl().
Use the guarded statement with a single captured now.
Add a regression test like the one for get() in sqlite-connection.spec.ts. Wrap statements.ttl instead of statements.get.

ttl() had the same read-then-delete sequence as get(): a value another process
wrote between the two statements was deleted. It now uses the guarded purge.
Answer to the outside-diff finding of the review on 5ea8167:
ttl() in sqlite-kv.store.ts deletes an expired key unconditionally: reproduced and fixed in db4b9bf. ttl() now captures now once and purges with the guarded delExpired statement, like get(). The regression test in sqlite-connection.spec.ts now runs for both get and ttl (the ttl case failed before, passes now). nx test storage-sqlite: 239/239.

What and why
Proposal item 4.5: a local SQLite store that several processes on one machine can share.
The reported problem: about ten local agent processes on one SQLite file failed with "database is locked". They
opened a connection per call, every waiting process wrote every 3 s, and the journal was in rollback mode. The SQLite
storage FrontMCP ships could not replace that code safely:
SqliteStorageAdapterwas not atomic across processes.set(..., { ifNotExists })checked and then set, andincrread, added and wrote back, so two processes could both take an NX lock or lose an increment. It had nodeleteIfEquals/expireIfEquals, soDistributedSemaphore(and so toolconcurrencyonthrottle.storage)refused it with
GUARD_STORAGE_UNSUPPORTED.busy_timeout), which blocks the event loop for up to5 s; the retry around the WAL switch slept with
Atomics.wait.createStorage()had nosqlitetype, and app code had no supported way to get a SQLite-backed storage.What this PR changes:
ifNotExists/ifExists),delete,incr/incrBy/decr, and the newdeleteIfEqualsandexpireIfEqualseach read and write inside oneBEGIN IMMEDIATEtransaction, which takes thefile's write lock before the read. TTL semantics match the memory and Redis adapters: an expired key is missing for
every operation (
expire()on one now returnsfalse),expire/expireIfEqualsreject a TTL that is not apositive integer with
StorageTTLError,incron an expired counter starts from 0 without the old TTL, and anon-integer value throws
StorageOperationError(was a plainError).DistributedSemaphoreworks on SQLite.acquireConnection()(new, insqlite-connection.ts) caches aconnection by resolved path; the KV, session, elicitation, task and event stores and the adapter all take theirs from
it, and it closes when the last store on the file releases it.
:memory:stays private per store. A later storethat asks for WAL switches the file to it, and the longest
busyTimeoutMsrequested applies.call order, with
busy_timeout = 0; onSQLITE_BUSYthe operation backs off on a timer (2 ms doubling to 50 ms,with jitter) and retries until
busyTimeoutMshas passed, then rejects with theSQLITE_BUSYerror. The wait countsfrom the call, restarting whenever an earlier queued operation gets the lock, so while another process keeps the lock
every queued operation fails within
busyTimeoutMsof its call instead of one timeout after another.disconnect()lets the operations already called finish before it closes the file. The periodic sweeps of expiredKV keys and events run on the same queue, so they no longer block the event loop or throw
SQLITE_BUSYout of atimer. A store whose setup fails releases the connection it took, and a store opened after a shared handle was
closed directly gets a new connection. The stores'
synchronous methods keep the connection's
busy_timeout, so the session, task, elicitation and event stores stillwait synchronously for at most
busyTimeoutMs; opening a store (WAL switch, schema) keeps its bounded synchronousretry. Both are documented.
createStorage({ type: 'sqlite', sqlite: { path, walMode?, busyTimeoutMs?, ttlCleanupIntervalMs?, encryption? } }).@frontmcp/utilsloads@frontmcp/storage-sqlitewith arequireon first use, following the factory pattern. Thepackage name is kept out of a string literal:
storage-sqlitedepends onutils, and a literal would make Nx andbundlers see a cycle. The
sqliteblock is validated with a Zod schema before any fallback, so a mistake throwsStorageConfigError(Invalid sqlite configuration: sqlite.path: is required (the path of the database file))even with
fallback: 'memory'. A missing package throwsStorageConfigErrornamingnpm install @frontmcp/storage-sqlite, or falls back to memory with a warning whenfallback: 'memory', as the other backendsdo. This also makes
throttle.storageand the plugins that take aStorageConfig(Remember, Approval) work onSQLite.
sqliteStorageProvider({ path, prefix?, provide?, ...options })returns a GLOBAL provider of a
RootStorageunderSqliteStorageToken(or theprovidetoken). It opens the fileat boot with
fallback: 'error'(it never silently becomes per-process memory), so an invalid option or a missingpackage fails the boot, and it disconnects in
onShutdown()(M01). It works increateContainer()scripts.setup-sqlitegains the journal-mode trade-offs (WAL needs a local filesystem and leaves-wal/-shmfiles; the rollback journal suits mostly-read files), busy-timeout guidance, and the several-processes model.
Different from the plan, and why:
BEGIN IMMEDIATEtransaction each, not singleINSERT … ON CONFLICT/RETURNINGstatements. The store can encrypt values (AES-GCM, random IV), and SQL cannot compare or add tociphertext, so single statements would need a second, encryption-only code path. The transaction takes the same
write lock up front and costs the same commit as a single statement, and it reuses the store's expiry and
decryption logic for both cases.
sqlite: { path }, likeredis,upstash,vercelKvandcloudflareKv, rather than atop-level
path.sqliteoption fills in. Tying it tosqlitewouldopen the sessions file at boot for every server that sets
sqlite, even under stdio where nothing opened it before,and would put app keys in the sessions file. The explicit provider names its own file and prefix, and works in
createContainer().(see above). Moving them is a larger change to the task store's orphan detection and is left for later.
