feat(sdk, auth, cli): persistent questions — asked once, answered from an inbox, delivered exactly once - #1026
Proposal item 5.1: questions that outlive the session.
The reported problem: an agent asks a question in one session, and the person answers it later, on a web page or in a
terminal, and the answer must reach the call that is waiting, or the next one. Elicitation could not do this: a pending
elicitation lived only as long as its in-process timer and its session, keyed by session id, and only the client that
was asked could answer it. A server that wanted it built its own question store, inbox and delivery.
What this PR adds:
this.elicit(message, schema, { ttl, persist: { key, ttlMs? } }) (tools and agents). The question is kept for
the caller in a store, under key, for persist.ttlMs (default elicitation.persistent.ttlMs, 24 h), which must be
longer than ttl, the time this call waits. It is answered in the inbox, not by the client's form, so it works with
any client. Asking a key that is waiting asks the same question.
Who a question belongs to (its subject):principal:<iss># for a signed-in caller (principal: when
its token names no issuer), so another session of the same user (a reconnect) gets the answer and the same sub at
another issuer (an app of the server with its own identity provider) does not; else session:<id> for the session
the server verified (the same rule as the elicitation fallback's owner); an anonymous caller with neither is refused
(ELICITATION_NOT_SUPPORTED). Questions are kept per server: the store's keys carry a digest of info.name, so
servers that share a Redis, a SQLite file or the default questions.sqlite do not share questions.
Delivery, once. The waiting call gets the answer. When it stops waiting (its ttl passes, the request is
cancelled, or its session ends), it fails with QuestionPendingError (QUESTION_PENDING, 408) and the answer waits in
the store for the next call of the subject that asks the key, which returns it at once. When a newer call of the
subject asks while one waits, the newer call holds the question and the older fails with QuestionSupersededError
(QUESTION_SUPERSEDED, 409). Each answer is handed to one call: answering is a compare-and-set from "pending" to
"answered", taking is a compare-and-delete of that record, and a call that takes an answer after it was aborted puts it
back. Waiting calls and inbox streams hear changes through M13's change feed (createChangeFeed), so a SQLite or Redis
store wakes calls in other processes too.
The store (QuestionStore, createQuestionStore()), opened through createStorage() on a backend with atomic
compare-and-set: elicitation.persistent.storage (memory, redis or sqlite), else the server's redis, else its sqlite, else questions.sqlite in $FRONTMCP_HOME (~/.frontmcp), created owner-only (0700/0600). Serverless
and edge have no default and must name one. The default file is refused (InvalidQuestionStoreError) when another
user could replace it (M12's directory guard over $FRONTMCP_HOME and the folders above it) or read it (not a
regular 0600 file of this user). One record per subject and key, with the storage TTL and an expiresAt checked on
every read; a record found at a key that its own subject and key do not name is dropped. With MCP_ELICITATION_SECRET (or MCP_SESSION_SECRET / MCP_SERVER_SECRET) set, each record (message, schema, answer,
subject) is AES-256-GCM encrypted (random 96-bit IV per write) with a key derived by HKDF-SHA256 from the secret and
the subject, and the storage keys are HMACs of the subject and the key, so neither shows in the store; without it the
records are in the clear, which is why the default file must be owner-only. Changing the secret drops the waiting
questions (they expire with their TTL).
The inbox, routes added beside M16's sign-in routes when http.auth.people and elicitation.persistent are both
on, all through the http:route flow (IP filter, rate limit, same-origin check on the POST, people auth). They are auth: 'subject' routes, a new kind next to 'people' and 'public': they take only a session from a code made with createCode({ subject }), and a 'people' route now refuses such a session (401), so a code sent to a person for
their questions opens no other page (the dashboard, an app's own people routes):
GET /_frontmcp/inbox: a page that lists the questions and answers them (inline script under a per-response CSP
nonce, no-store, no-referrer; messages are rendered as text);
GET /_frontmcp/questions/events: the same view as SSE, sent again after every change;
POST /_frontmcp/questions/:id/answer with { "action": "accept" | "decline" | "cancel", "content"?: {...} }: 200, 400 for content that does not match the question's schema or a body that is not an answer, 404 for a
question the person may not see, 409 for a second answer.
How a person maps to a subject.LoopbackTokenAuth.createCode({ subject }) (libs/auth) makes a one-time code
bound to a subject; the session it buys carries PeopleSession.subject (this.person.subject). The inbox shows and
answers that subject's questions only. printQuestionInboxLink(this) makes such a code for the subject of the
current call and prints the link (/_frontmcp/people/login?code=…&next=/_frontmcp/inbox) on the server's stderr,
where the person at the machine reads it as they read the startup token; the call gets only { expiresAt }. By
default (elicitation.persistent.inboxLinks: 'terminal') it prints only while stderr is a terminal and otherwise
fails with ElicitationNotSupportedError, printing nothing: stderr that is a pipe or a file is what a stdio MCP client
captures into its logs, what frontmcp dev --stdio writes to its bridge log, what an agent that started the server
reads back, and what a log collector keeps, and whoever reads the link can answer the questions. 'stderr' prints it
always (for output only the person reads), 'off' never (for an app that sends createCode({ subject }) codes
itself). So the subject's own call is what grants a person access to its questions, and the agent never holds a code
it could spend to answer its own question. A session signed in for another subject gets an empty inbox and 404 for
every question id, the same answer as for an id that never existed; a session from the startup token gets 401.
frontmcp inbox [link] (CLI): spends the link's one-time code at POST /_frontmcp/people/login as a browser
does, then lists the waiting questions with that session (and asks for answers on a terminal), or answers one with --answer <id> and --content <json> / --decline / --cancel. Without link it reads it from FRONTMCP_INBOX_LINK, a terminal prompt or stdin, so the code shows in no process list (ps shows other users a
command line) or shell history. It follows no redirect (the session cookie and an answer never go to another server),
takes plain http for a loopback server only (elsewhere the code and the cookie would cross the network in the
clear), strips control characters and bidi overrides from what the server sends before printing (a question's text
cannot move the cursor, rewrite a line or set the clipboard), and never prints the cookie. It uses only the inbox
routes, so it adds no surface and needs no token: each run needs a fresh link from printQuestionInboxLink() (the
printed path works with --url <server>).
Config:elicitation: { enabled: true, persistent: true | { ttlMs?, storage?, inboxLinks? } }. A bad value fails startup with InvalidQuestionStoreError (INVALID_QUESTION_STORE, e.g. elicitation.persistent: ttlMs must be greater than 0),
and so does a store that cannot be opened (no silent fallback to memory). persistent without people auth starts, with
a warning that the inbox is off.
Threat model. The attacker is another MCP caller of the same server, a user of another identity provider or another
server on the same store, a person signed in to its web host for someone else, a page on another site in the person's
browser, another local user, an agent that sees what the server prints, or someone who can read the store.
Defended: reading or answering another subject's question (lookups are keyed by the subject's digest, so another
subject's id is "not found"; a person reaches a subject's questions only through a code that subject's own call made);
the same sub at another issuer, and the same subject and key on another server sharing the store (the issuer is in
the subject, the server's name in the keys); a subject's code opening anything but the inbox (auth: 'subject'
routes only); the agent answering its own approval (the link goes to stderr, never into a tool result, and by default
only to a terminal, never to a pipe, a file or a log an MCP client, a dev bridge or an agent can read);
a cross-site answer (M16's same-origin check on the POST, and the SameSite=Strict cookie); answering twice or two
calls taking one answer, also across processes on one SQLite file (compare-and-set and compare-and-delete in the
store; an answer taken after an abort is put back with a compare-and-set, so it is delivered once); an answer that
does not match the schema (validated server-side against the question's stored JSON schema, whatever the page sent,
and parsed with the call's Zod schema when delivered); the question and answer at rest when the elicitation secret is
set, a ciphertext moved to another question's key, and another local user reading or swapping the default file;
script in a question's message or schema on the inbox page (rendered with textContent, no JSON in the page, a
per-response nonce CSP with default-src 'none'); escape sequences in a question printed by frontmcp inbox; the
link's code raced by another local user through ps, or the session following a redirect.
Known limits: an agent that runs commands as the OS user of the server can read its terminal, its store and its
environment (the secret), so it can answer its own questions whatever inboxLinks says; such an agent gets no
persistent approval, unless the server runs as another user. Tool code can call createCode({ subject }) for any
subject, so the binding is as strong as the tools that call it (the catalog says to send a code to the person only).
The SSE view is sent again after any change to the store, so a person can tell that some question changed, not
which. A client that drops its connection without ending its session or cancelling the request is not seen by
the server, so its call keeps waiting until its ttl or until a newer call of the subject asks; an answer given in
that window goes to that call, and an answer delivered to a call whose result never reaches the client is spent.
An answer nobody takes is dropped with its question when ttlMs passes. Ending the session (DELETE), notifications/cancelled, or a newer call stop it (the
e2e covers the session end). Questions are shared by the scopes of one server that open the same store (same subject
and key, same question). People sign in only with loopback-token, whose model is one person at the machine: every
subject's link is printed on the one server console, so a server for several people should send LoopbackTokenAuth.createCode({ subject }) codes through its own channel to each of them, and set inboxLinks: 'off'. A link's code is single use
and lives codeTtlMs (60 s by default, at most 10 min).
Deviations from the plan, with the reason:
A persistent question is answered in the inbox and is not also sent to the client as elicitation/create. Two answer
paths would race for one answer, and the case this serves (a person who is not at the client) has nobody to answer
the client's form; a plain this.elicit() still asks the client.
Subjects are the signed-in principal first, not the session: the next call "after a reconnect" is a new session.
elicitation.persistent is checked when the server opens the store rather than in the eager options schema, and the
question modules are loaded on first use, so a browser bundle that does not use them carries neither (the same choice
M16 made for http.auth.people). The question errors live with the questions (elicitation/questions/question.errors.ts)
for the same reason, and are exported from @frontmcp/sdk like the others.
User-facing change
What changed: new persist option of this.elicit() (PersistOptions); elicitation.persistent (with inboxLinks and its InboxLinks type); the inbox routes /_frontmcp/inbox and /_frontmcp/questions*; printQuestionInboxLink(); frontmcp inbox [link] and FRONTMCP_INBOX_LINK; LoopbackTokenAuth.createCode({ subject })
and PeopleSession.subject; @HttpRoute({ auth: 'subject' }); errors QuestionPendingError, QuestionSupersededError, QuestionNotFoundError, QuestionAlreadyAnsweredError, QuestionStoreBusyError, InvalidQuestionStoreError; exports QuestionStore, createQuestionStore, resolveQuestionStorage, questionSubjectOf, questionInboxRoutes, QUESTIONS_TOPIC, PersistentQuestion, QuestionOutcome, AskOutcome, DEFAULT_QUESTION_TTL_MS.
Before → after:
A question a call asked died with the call's timer and session → with persist it waits in the store, answered in
the inbox, for the waiting call or the next call of the same user.
New reserved paths when http.auth.people and elicitation.persistent are on: /_frontmcp/inbox, /_frontmcp/questions, /_frontmcp/questions/events, /_frontmcp/questions/:id/answer (a user route there fails
startup with InvalidHttpRouteError).
frontmcp --help lists inbox under Development.
A people session signed in with a subject-bound code carries subject and opens only auth: 'subject' routes
(401 on a 'people' route); sessions from the startup token are unchanged on 'people' routes and get 401 on 'subject' routes.
HttpRouteAuth is 'people' | 'subject' | 'public'; the decorator's message reads auth must be 'people', 'subject' or 'public'.
A Redis named only in elicitation.persistent.storage (no elicitation.redis, no server redis) keeps the
elicitation state too, under mcp:elicit:; a server sqlite still keeps the elicitation state.
On an edge runtime, elicitation.persistent fails startup with InvalidQuestionStoreError
(elicitation.persistent: it is not available on an edge runtime: ..., naming why each store cannot run there and
the remedy: Node.js, or turn it off), before either store opens. Why this design (rejecting) and not an
edge-capable backend: StorageConfig already has upstash (HTTP), but its adapter, like vercel-kv's, has no
atomic setIfEquals, which answering and handing over a question needs; supporting it would mean a new
compare-and-set in @frontmcp/utils, not a reuse of existing types. redis needs TCP, sqlite a local file, and memory ends with the isolate, so no store a question can use runs there.
A call cancelled before or while it takes an answer (store.ask, the wait, or an async schema check) puts the
answer back for the next call with its question's expiry, and gets QuestionPendingError; QuestionOutcome's answered carries expiresAt, and QuestionStore.restore() takes it (an answer past it is dropped).
An agent's this.signal was always undefined → it aborts when the call is cancelled or fails, its timeout.executeMs and its run loop's execution.timeout included; the tools the agent's model calls get it too.
The scope closes the elicitation store's storage when it is disposed (it stayed connected).
frontmcp.dev pages affected (if known): the elicitation reference (/reference/sdk/elicit), the elicitation
configuration page (elicitation.persistent, inboxLinks), the HTTP routes page (people auth, auth: 'subject', createCode({ subject }), the inbox routes), the CLI reference (frontmcp inbox), the errors reference.
Skills catalog entries updated:frontmcp-config/references/configure-elicitation.md (a "Persistent Questions"
section, patterns and troubleshooting rows), frontmcp-config/examples/configure-elicitation/persistent-questions-inbox.md
(new, with its manifest row), create-tool/references/elicitation.md, frontmcp-development/references/create-http-route.md, frontmcp-config/references/configure-http.md, frontmcp-development/references/create-agent.md and offload-cpu-work.md (an agent's this.signal).
Bundle size
The question options and the 'subject' route kind reach both measured esbuild bundles; the question store, inbox routes and CLI stay out. The utils change feed (M13), which the question notifications use, now lands in the shared chunk a Vite app loads first. Measured against #1025's head (on today's main):
Each budget moves up by exactly the measured growth. The esbuild figures include what review added: the scope's use of a Redis named only in elicitation.persistent.storage for the elicitation state (+101 bytes each), then the agent flow's own abort controller and closing that store on dispose (+109 bytes each), then refusing persistent questions on an edge runtime and putting back an answer a cancelled call took (+16 bytes each). The Vite growth is the largest single step in the stack for that chunk; keeping the change feed out of the initial chunk (a dynamic import on first subscribe) is a candidate for the browser-size follow-up.

demo-e2e-elicitation 45/45, with persistent-questions.e2e.spec.ts (new, 7/7) against main.questions.ts
(transparent auth on the mock IdP, so alice and bob are real subjects; the default SQLite file in a temporary FRONTMCP_HOME; the person reads each inbox link from the server's logs, and the tool result is checked to carry no
code): the waiting call gets the inbox answer; ask, the call gives up, disconnect, answer through the
route, reconnect as a new session, the call gets the answer, and the next call does not; the waiting session ended
with DELETE, the answer, and the next session gets it; bob neither sees nor answers alice's question (404)
and his own call is not answered by hers; a cross-site answer refused (403); a session from the startup token's code
gets 401 at the inbox; frontmcp inbox (the built CLI) lists with a link piped to stdin, answers with one in FRONTMCP_INBOX_LINK, and a spent link is refused. The app sets inboxLinks: 'stderr', since the test reads the
links from the server's piped stderr. The project's test targets now depend on cli:build.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Persistent elicitation questions can remain available after a call stops waiting, with configurable expiration and storage. Answers are scoped to the caller and can be retrieved by a later call.
View and answer questions using a sign-in link and the frontmcp inbox command, or through the web inbox.
HTTP routes can require a caller-bound session, keeping subject-specific access separate from regular people authentication.
Agent and tool operations now receive cancellation signals when calls fail or time out.
Documentation
Added configuration guidance and an example for persistent questions and inbox links.
…ked, with an inbox to answer them
this.elicit(message, schema, { persist: { key } }) keeps the question for its
subject (the signed-in user, else the verified session) in a store opened
through the storage factory, with a TTL longer than the call's wait. A person
signed in for that subject answers it at /_frontmcp/inbox or with
frontmcp inbox; the answer reaches the waiting call, or the next call of the
subject, once.
…of handing it to the caller
A code in a tool result let the agent sign in for its own subject and answer
its own question. printQuestionInboxLink() prints the link on stderr, where the
person at the machine reads it as they read the startup token, and returns only
its expiry.
…ow no redirect, and print no control characters
frontmcp inbox takes the link from FRONTMCP_INBOX_LINK, a terminal prompt or stdin when the command line gives none,
so the one-time code shows in no process list or shell history. Every request refuses redirects, so the session
cookie and an answer never follow a redirect to another server. Plain http is taken for a loopback server only, and
control characters and bidi overrides the server sends are stripped before printing.
…e subject sign-ins, and print inbox links only on a terminal
- A signed-in caller's subject is principal:<iss>#, so the same sub at another issuer is another subject.
- The store is keyed by the server's info.name, so servers that share a Redis, a SQLite file or the default
questions.sqlite do not share questions; a record found at a key it does not belong at is dropped, so a ciphertext
moved to another question's place is never delivered.
- The default questions.sqlite is refused when another user could replace it or read it (M12's directory guard, a
regular owner-only file).
- New route auth 'subject': the inbox routes take only a session from a createCode({ subject }) code, and a 'people'
route refuses such a session, so a code sent for one caller's questions opens no other page. The startup token's
session gets 401 at the inbox. GET /_frontmcp/questions is no-store.
- elicitation.persistent.inboxLinks: 'terminal' (default) prints an inbox link only while stderr is a terminal, since
a link in a log, a stdio client's capture or an agent's output lets its reader answer; 'stderr' prints it always,
'off' never.
…top of #1025
The question options and the 'subject' route kind reach both measured bundles (+661 bytes minified each over #1025's head), and the utils change feed now joins the Vite initial chunk (+3,462). The three budgets move up by exactly that.

The PR adds persistent elicitation questions with configurable storage and TTLs, subject-scoped inbox routes, and a frontmcp inbox CLI command. It also propagates abort signals through agent execution and adds SDK, CLI, and end-to-end coverage and documentation.
Changes: Persistent elicitation questions and inbox
Passes abort signals through agent execution and model-called tools. Execution failures abort the linked controller. Tests and documentation cover timeout and cancellation behavior.
Adds routes to list, stream, answer, and render questions. Route authentication checks whether the session is subject-bound, and route registration depends on people authentication.

forwards the call's signal into the constructor arguments. `this.signal`
was always undefined in an agent, so a cancelled or timed-out agent call
kept waiting on its persistent question and could take an answer meant
for the next call.
- Docs: only a signed-in caller's question reaches its other sessions; a
session-scoped caller's stays with its session. The inbox example's
features name `frontmcp inbox --url <server>`, which keeps the one-time
code out of shell history and process lists.
… on edge with only a persistent-questions Redis
- AgentInstance.callToolThrough passes the agent call's signal into the
tools:call-tool ctx, so a tool the model calls (or a nested agent's
invoke tool) aborts with the agent's call, and a persistent question it
waits on stops waiting instead of taking an answer after the call ended.
- Scope: a Redis named only in elicitation.persistent.storage (no
elicitation.redis, no server redis) is passed to createElicitationStore
as its storage, so an edge server with it starts instead of failing the
distributed-storage check before the questions open. A server sqlite
still wins, and memory or sqlite question stores are not shared.
- Docs: configure-elicitation says where the elicitation state goes; the
persistent-questions examples declare their tools' outputSchema.
- Bundle budgets re-fitted to the measured growth over #1025's head.
On the review of da6f7ab: its two outside-diff findings, and the follow-up in the review of ddda7cb, are all handled in e8ffe39.
agent.instance.tscallToolThrough (forward the parent signal): confirmed and fixed.da6f7ab gave the agent its call's signal (this.signal), but callToolThrough still built the tools:call-tool ctx without it. The tool's flow then linked its abort controller to nothing, so a tool the model called, or a nested agent's invoke_<agent> tool, kept running after the agent's call stopped. A persistent question it waited on could then take an answer meant for the next call. The ctx now carries signal: ctx.signal. The direct path (useToolFlow: false) already passed it. Test: "aborts the signal of a tool the agent's model called when the agent's call stops" in agent-context-wiring.spec.ts (agent timeout.executeMs: 50, tool outlasting it). It saw an un-aborted signal before the change and sees an aborted one now.
scope.instance.ts elicitation store on edge: confirmed and fixed, narrower than suggested. With elicitation.enabled on Edge and Redis named only in elicitation.persistent.storage, createElicitationStore got no backend and threw the distributed-storage error before openPersistentQuestions ran, although the docs say edge needs a question store named. The scope now passes that storage to the factory only when it names Redis and neither elicitation.redis nor the server's redis is set. A server sqlite still wins (the factory checks it first). A memory or sqlite question store is not shared: SQLite through createStorage has no pub/sub, which the elicitation store requires, so passing every persistent.storage would have broken Node servers that keep questions in SQLite. Edge with a memory question store is still refused, as before. Tests in the new scope-edge-persistent-questions.spec.ts (Edge runtime on, both store factories recording what they were asked for, with memory standing in for the Redis):
"keeps the elicitation state in the Redis named for persistent questions, and starts": failed with ElicitationNotSupportedError before the change.
"still refuses persistent questions kept in memory, which an edge runtime cannot share".
configure-elicitation now says where the elicitation state goes, and the PR body's "User-facing change" lists it.
Follow-up (outputSchema in the examples): applied. The catalog requires outputSchema on every tool, so approve_deploy ({ approved: z.boolean() }) and inbox_link ({ expiresAt: z.number() }, what printQuestionInboxLink returns) declare it in both configure-elicitation.md and persistent-questions-inbox.md.
Bundle size: the scope change adds 101 bytes to each esbuild bundle and nothing to the Vite initial chunk. The budgets are 1,339,931 and 1,346,796 (#1025's plus the measured +762 each); the Vite chunk's stays 964,390. This is in the body's "Bundle size" section.

Abort the agent signal for the inner execution timeout.
792-792: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Abort the agent signal for the inner execution timeout.
If an agent sets execution.timeout without timeout.executeMs, CallAgentFlow.execute times out through withTimeout after this line passes ctx.signal to the agent. That timeout does not abort ctx.signal. A persistent-question waiter can then take a later answer after the call has failed, leaving no answer for the next call. Tie the inner timeout to an abort signal before passing it to the agent context. The new tests exercise timeout.executeMs, not this timeout path. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the signal passed to the agent context in CallAgentFlow.execute so the
inner execution timeout aborts it, while preserving cancellation from
ctx.signal. Ensure the timeout signal reaches persistent-question waiters so
they stop accepting answers after the call times out.
Define the tool metadata separately and derive the execute() input and output types from it. The example in references/configure-elicitation.md, Line 144, needs the same change.
As per path instructions, tool changes must “derive execute() types with ToolInputOf/ToolOutputOf.”

…elicitation store on dispose
- agents:call-agent gives the agent a controller linked to the call's
signal, as tools:call-tool does, and aborts it when execute() fails.
The run loop enforces execution.timeout itself and rejects with a plain
Error, which neither flow treated as a timeout, so a step it cut short
(a tool the model called, a persistent question) kept going and could
take an answer meant for the next call. linkedAbortController moves to
utils/abort.utils so both flows share it.
- The scope destroys the elicitation store and disconnects its storage on
dispose; a Redis opened for it stayed connected after the scope ended.
- Docs: the question storage precedence lists elicitation.redis; an
agent's this.signal is described in create-agent and offload-cpu-work.
- Bundle budgets re-fitted to the measured growth over #1025's head.
On the review of c6d2146: the two threads are answered on their lines, and here are the two findings from the review body.
Abort the agent signal for the inner execution timeout (agent.instance.ts:792): confirmed and fixed in a0d7adf. The test "aborts the agent's this.signal when its own execution.timeout stops the call" (execution: { timeout: 50 }, no timeout.executeMs) failed: the agent's signal stayed live. The cause was one layer deeper than the call-agent flow's withTimeout. The agent's run loop enforces execution.timeout itself and rejects with a plain Error, so neither the agent flow nor the invoke tool's flow saw an ExecutionTimeoutError to abort on. The step it cut short (a tool the model called, a persistent question) went on and could take an answer meant for the next call.
agents:call-agent now gives the agent a controller linked to the call's signal, as tools:call-tool does. It passes that controller's signal to the agent context, so the tools the model calls are linked to it too through callToolThrough. It aborts the controller whenever execute() fails: timeouts, the loop's own timeout, or any other failure, since the run is over either way. linkedAbortController moved from call-tool.flow.ts to utils/abort.utils.ts so both flows share it. The test passes now, as do the agent, tool, scope and elicitation suites (99 suites, 1,171 tests). create-agent and offload-cpu-work now describe an agent's this.signal.
Derive the tool types from their schemas (examples): declined. It's a style choice, not a defect. The examples' inline execute(input: { version: string }) types match their schemas, and that's the form most of the catalog uses: 122 files declare execute() inputs inline, 17 use ToolInputOf. create-tool/references/derived-types.md already teaches the derived form. The libs/skills/** path instructions in .coderabbit.yaml don't contain the rule cited. Changing only these two examples would make them differ from their neighbours without making them more correct.
Bundle size: these fixes add 109 bytes to each esbuild bundle and nothing to the Vite initial chunk. The budgets are now 1,340,040 and 1,346,905 (#1025's plus the measured +871 each); the Vite chunk's stays 964,390. The body's "Bundle size" section and "User-facing change" are updated.

Persistent Redis on Edge still fails at startup, in both stores.
401-407: 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Persistent Redis on Edge still fails at startup, in both stores.
With elicitation.persistent.storage set to Redis, and no elicitation.redis or server redis, the question store and the elicitation store both pass type: 'redis' to createStorage with fallback: 'error'. That creates RedisStorageAdapter, which needs ioredis and a TCP connection. Edge runtimes do not provide that transport. The load or connect error is rethrown, so startup fails.
Changing only the elicitation call does not fix this. The question store fails the same way.
A clearer rejection does not satisfy the documented contract. configure-elicitation.md:196-199 says a Redis-only persistent store keeps Edge servers working with no other store. The persistent-storage schema also accepts only memory, redis, and sqlite. No Edge-capable backend (upstash or vercel-kv) can be selected for persistent questions.
Choose one design, and apply it to both stores through their shared storage selection:
Accept an Edge-capable backend (upstash or vercel-kv) in the persistent-storage types, and map its config for both stores.
Or reject redis on Edge with a clear error, and update the configure-elicitation.md text to match.
Do not change only the fallback. No patch is proposed, because the Edge-capable storage config shape is not established by the inspected source.

Restore answers claimed by a cancelled call.
When signal is already aborted, or aborts while store.ask(request) resolves, QuestionStore.ask can claim the stored answer before askPersistentQuestion checks cancellation. The current answered path then returns the answer without restoring it. This loses the answer for the next live call.
Make the answered outcome retain its record expiry. After store.ask resolves, check the signal before delivery. If cancellation won, restore the claimed answer and reject with QuestionPendingError. Cover both cancellation cases with tests. The same cancellation-safe handling must cover asynchronous answer validation.

Update the answered flow in askPersistentQuestion so QuestionStore.ask retains
the claimed answer’s record expiry, then check the signal before delivery and
restore the answer before rejecting with QuestionPendingError if cancellation
has occurred. Apply the same cancellation-safe restore behavior when
asynchronous answer validation is interrupted, and add tests for cancellation
both before and during store.ask resolution.
…k an answer a cancelled call took
- An edge runtime has no store a question can be kept in: redis needs a
TCP connection, sqlite a local file, memory ends with the isolate, and
the HTTP stores (upstash, vercel-kv) have no atomic setIfEquals. The
shared persistentQuestionsSettings() now refuses elicitation.persistent
there with InvalidQuestionStoreError and the reason, before the scope
opens either store; the docs no longer promise a Redis-only edge server.
- askPersistentQuestion checks the call's signal after store.ask and after
the async schema check: when the call was cancelled first, the answer it
took is put back for the next call and it gets QuestionPendingError. The
answered outcome carries the question's expiresAt, and restore() keeps
it (an answer past it is dropped) instead of starting a new TTL.
- Docs: create-agent and offload-cpu-work say where execution.timeout
applies (the default run loop, and the call when timeout.executeMs is
unset).
- Bundle budgets re-fitted to the measured growth over #1025's head.
On the review of a0d7adf: its two follow-up findings are fixed in 5e8fb3e, and the create-agent thread is answered on its line.
Persistent Redis on Edge still fails at startup, in both stores: confirmed. I chose to reject persistent questions on an edge runtime, and corrected the docs. I considered an edge-capable backend first. persistent.storage is already a StorageConfig, and that type already has upstash (Upstash Redis over HTTP), so the shape exists. But the Upstash adapter, like vercel-kv's, implements deleteIfEquals and expireIfEquals and not setIfEquals, which answering and handing over a question needs. Supporting it would mean writing a new atomic compare-and-set in @frontmcp/utils, not reusing existing types and factories.
The other stores can't run there either: redis needs TCP, sqlite a local file, and memory ends with the isolate, so an answer given through the inbox in another isolate is never found. So the rejection covers persistent questions on an edge runtime, not only redis. Refusing redis alone would let memory start and silently lose questions.
The shared persistentQuestionsSettings() in question-scope.helper makes the check, and both selection paths use it. The scope calls it before it opens either store, so no ioredis load is attempted, and openPersistentQuestions calls it too. It fails startup with InvalidQuestionStoreError: elicitation.persistent: it is not available on an edge runtime: a question must outlive the isolate that asked it, and none of its stores runs there (...). Run the server on Node.js to keep questions, or turn elicitation.persistent off.
configure-elicitation no longer says an edge server works with a Redis-only persistent store, and the persistent.storage JSDoc says the same. The body's "User-facing change" states the choice and why.
Tests:
scope-persistent-questions.spec.ts (renamed from scope-edge-…):
"refuses persistent questions on an edge runtime, with the reason, before opening a store" runs for redis and memory. Before the change, redis started (the test stands memory in for Redis), and memory failed later with the elicitation factory's message.
The Node.js cases (the shared Redis, closing it on dispose) stay.
Restore answers claimed by a cancelled call: confirmed and fixed.
Signal checks:askPersistentQuestion checks the call's signal after store.ask resolves, and again after the asynchronous schema check, on both the answered-at-once path and the wait path. When cancellation won, the answer it took is put back for the next call, and the call gets QuestionPendingError.
Expiry kept: the answered outcome of ask and take now carries the question's expiresAt, and QuestionStore.restore(request, answer, expiresAt) recreates the record with that expiry. Before, it started a new TTL, which could keep an answer past its question. An answer whose question has expired is dropped. The wait path's existing put-back passes the expiry too.
Tests in ask-question.spec.ts: cancelled before it asked, cancelled while store.ask resolves, and cancelled during an async refine. All three were red before: the answer went to the cancelled call. All three check that the answer is still waiting with its original expiresAt, and that the next call gets it.
Tests in question.store.spec.ts:restore keeps the expiry, and drops an answer past it.
Agent, tool, scope and elicitation suites: 100 suites, 1,185 tests pass. Bundle size: +16 bytes each esbuild bundle, nothing on the Vite chunk. The budgets are 1,340,056 and 1,346,921 (#1025's plus the measured +887 each); the Vite chunk's stays 964,390. This is in the body's "Bundle size" section.

On the review of 5e8fb3e (outside the diff, configure-elicitation.md:144, examples' execute() types): fixed in e42fbe2, and this corrects my earlier answer.
When this came up on c6d2146 I declined it as a style choice, saying the cited rule wasn't in the path instructions. That missed create-tool/rules/derive-execute-types.md (severity: required): "execute() parameter and return types come from ToolInputOf<> / ToolOutputOf<> — never duplicated inline." Older catalog examples still type inputs inline, but the examples this PR adds shouldn't add to that, since agents copy them.
Both persistent-question examples (configure-elicitation.md and persistent-questions-inbox.md) now:
hoist their schemas: approveDeployInput, approveDeployOutput, inboxLinkOutput;
derive ApproveDeployInput / ApproveDeployOutput / InboxLinkOutput with ToolInputOf / ToolOutputOf;
annotate execute() with them.
The inbox example type-checks against the SDK source with no errors, and a wrong return type on inbox_link is caught (2 errors), so the derived types are live. Docs only: no bundle change.

What and why
Proposal item 5.1: questions that outlive the session.
The reported problem: an agent asks a question in one session, and the person answers it later, on a web page or in a
terminal, and the answer must reach the call that is waiting, or the next one. Elicitation could not do this: a pending
elicitation lived only as long as its in-process timer and its session, keyed by session id, and only the client that
was asked could answer it. A server that wanted it built its own question store, inbox and delivery.
What this PR adds:
this.elicit(message, schema, { ttl, persist: { key, ttlMs? } })(tools and agents). The question is kept forthe caller in a store, under
key, forpersist.ttlMs(defaultelicitation.persistent.ttlMs, 24 h), which must belonger than
ttl, the time this call waits. It is answered in the inbox, not by the client's form, so it works withany client. Asking a key that is waiting asks the same question.
principal:<iss>#for a signed-in caller (principal:whenits token names no issuer), so another session of the same user (a reconnect) gets the answer and the same
subatanother issuer (an app of the server with its own identity provider) does not; else
session:<id>for the sessionthe server verified (the same rule as the elicitation fallback's owner); an anonymous caller with neither is refused
(
ELICITATION_NOT_SUPPORTED). Questions are kept per server: the store's keys carry a digest ofinfo.name, soservers that share a Redis, a SQLite file or the default
questions.sqlitedo not share questions.ttlpasses, the request iscancelled, or its session ends), it fails with
QuestionPendingError(QUESTION_PENDING, 408) and the answer waits inthe store for the next call of the subject that asks the key, which returns it at once. When a newer call of the
subject asks while one waits, the newer call holds the question and the older fails with
QuestionSupersededError(
QUESTION_SUPERSEDED, 409). Each answer is handed to one call: answering is a compare-and-set from "pending" to"answered", taking is a compare-and-delete of that record, and a call that takes an answer after it was aborted puts it
back. Waiting calls and inbox streams hear changes through M13's change feed (
createChangeFeed), so a SQLite or Redisstore wakes calls in other processes too.
QuestionStore,createQuestionStore()), opened throughcreateStorage()on a backend with atomiccompare-and-set:

InvalidQuestionStoreError) when anotheruser could replace it (M12's directory guard over
$FRONTMCP_HOMEand the folders above it) or read it (not aregular
0600file of this user). One record per subject and key, with the storage TTL and anexpiresAtchecked onevery read; a record found at a key that its own subject and key do not name is dropped. With
MCP_ELICITATION_SECRET(orMCP_SESSION_SECRET/MCP_SERVER_SECRET) set, each record (message, schema, answer, subject) is AES-256-GCM encrypted (random 96-bit IV per write) with a key derived by HKDF-SHA256 from the secret and
the subject, and the storage keys are HMACs of the subject and the key, so neither shows in the store; without it the
records are in the clear, which is why the default file must be owner-only. Changing the secret drops the waiting
questions (they expire with their TTL).

They areauth: 'subject'routes, a new kind next to'people'and'public': they take only a session from a code made withcreateCode({ subject }), and a'people'route now refuses such a session (401), so a code sent to a person fortheir questions opens no other page (the dashboard, an app's own people routes):

PeopleSession.subject(this.person.subject). The inbox shows andanswers that subject's questions only.
printQuestionInboxLink(this)makes such a code for the subject of thecurrent call and prints the link (
/_frontmcp/people/login?code=…&next=/_frontmcp/inbox) on the server's stderr, where the person at the machine reads it as they read the startup token; the call gets only
{ expiresAt }. Bydefault (
elicitation.persistent.inboxLinks: 'terminal') it prints only while stderr is a terminal and otherwisefails with
ElicitationNotSupportedError, printing nothing: stderr that is a pipe or a file is what a stdio MCP clientcaptures into its logs, what
frontmcp dev --stdiowrites to its bridge log, what an agent that started the serverreads back, and what a log collector keeps, and whoever reads the link can answer the questions.
'stderr'prints italways (for output only the person reads),
'off'never (for an app that sendscreateCode({ subject })codesitself). So the subject's own call is what grants a person access to its questions, and the agent never holds a code
it could spend to answer its own question. A session signed in for another subject gets an empty inbox and
404forevery question id, the same answer as for an id that never existed; a session from the startup token gets
401.frontmcp inbox [link](CLI): spends the link's one-time code atPOST /_frontmcp/people/loginas a browserdoes, then lists the waiting questions with that session (and asks for answers on a terminal), or answers one with
--answer <id>and--content <json>/--decline/--cancel. Withoutlinkit reads it fromFRONTMCP_INBOX_LINK, a terminal prompt or stdin, so the code shows in no process list (psshows other users acommand line) or shell history. It follows no redirect (the session cookie and an answer never go to another server),
takes plain
httpfor a loopback server only (elsewhere the code and the cookie would cross the network in theclear), strips control characters and bidi overrides from what the server sends before printing (a question's text
cannot move the cursor, rewrite a line or set the clipboard), and never prints the cookie. It uses only the inbox
routes, so it adds no surface and needs no token: each run needs a fresh link from
printQuestionInboxLink()(theprinted path works with
--url <server>).elicitation: { enabled: true, persistent: true | { ttlMs?, storage?, inboxLinks? } }. A bad value fails startup withInvalidQuestionStoreError(INVALID_QUESTION_STORE, e.g.elicitation.persistent: ttlMs must be greater than 0),and so does a store that cannot be opened (no silent fallback to memory).

and parsed with the call's Zod schema when delivered); the question and answer at rest when the elicitation secret is
set, a ciphertext moved to another question's key, and another local user reading or swapping the default file;
script in a question's message or schema on the inbox page (rendered with
textContent, no JSON in the page, aper-response nonce CSP with
default-src 'none'); escape sequences in a question printed byfrontmcp inbox; thelink's code raced by another local user through
ps, or the session following a redirect.environment (the secret), so it can answer its own questions whatever
inboxLinkssays; such an agent gets nopersistent approval, unless the server runs as another user. Tool code can call
createCode({ subject })for anysubject, so the binding is as strong as the tools that call it (the catalog says to send a code to the person only).
The SSE view is sent again after any change to the store, so a person can tell that some question changed, not
which. A client that drops its connection without ending its session or cancelling the request is not seen by
the server, so its call keeps waiting until its
ttlor until a newer call of the subject asks; an answer given inthat window goes to that call, and an answer delivered to a call whose result never reaches the client is spent.
An answer nobody takes is dropped with its question when
ttlMspasses. Ending the session (DELETE),notifications/cancelled, or a newer call stop it (thee2e covers the session end). Questions are shared by the scopes of one server that open the same store (same subject
and key, same question). People sign in only with
loopback-token, whose model is one person at the machine: everysubject's link is printed on the one server console, so a server for several people should send
LoopbackTokenAuth.createCode({ subject })codes through its own channel to each of them, and setinboxLinks: 'off'. A link's code is single useand lives
codeTtlMs(60 s by default, at most 10 min).Deviations from the plan, with the reason:
elicitation/create. Two answerpaths would race for one answer, and the case this serves (a person who is not at the client) has nobody to answer
the client's form; a plain
this.elicit()still asks the client.elicitation.persistentis checked when the server opens the store rather than in the eager options schema, and thequestion modules are loaded on first use, so a browser bundle that does not use them carries neither (the same choice
M16 made for

The question options and the
'subject'route kind reach both measured esbuild bundles; the question store, inbox routes and CLI stay out. The utils change feed (M13), which the question notifications use, now lands in the shared chunk a Vite app loads first. Measured against #1025's head (on today'smain):create()+ one toolcreate()+ WebMcpPlugin + one toolEach budget moves up by exactly the measured growth. The esbuild figures include what review added: the scope's use of a Redis named only in
elicitation.persistent.storagefor the elicitation state (+101 bytes each), then the agent flow's own abort controller and closing that store on dispose (+109 bytes each), then refusing persistent questions on an edge runtime and putting back an answer a cancelled call took (+16 bytes each). The Vite growth is the largest single step in the stack for that chunk; keeping the change feed out of the initial chunk (a dynamic import on first subscribe) is a candidate for the browser-size follow-up.Tests
