feat(utils): a process supervision kit, and stdio servers that exit when orphaned - #999
Proposal item 4.6: a process supervision kit, so local servers and the workers they start do not outlive their owner.
The reported problem: a stdio server whose client died kept running. runStdio() exited only on SIGINT/SIGTERM.
Nothing watched for stdin ending or the parent dying, so a stdio server whose client was killed (or crashed, or
closed stdin as the MCP spec's stdio shutdown asks) stayed alive whenever anything held its event loop: a provider's
timer, a Redis or SQLite connection, a channel. Detached task workers (tasks.runner: 'cli') carried no mark, so
nothing could tell an orphaned worker from any other node process.
What this PR changes:
A Node-only process module in @frontmcp/utils, loaded the way the file system helpers are: child_process is required on first use, behind assertNode, and nothing touches process at import, so the browser and edge
builds are unaffected. The CLI's process-tree helpers move into it unchanged (processTreeSpawnOptions, signalProcessTree, isProcessTreeAlive, stopProcessTree, with their specs); frontmcp dev and the stdio
bridge's child supervisor import them from @frontmcp/utils. New:
spawnOwned(command, args, { marker, ...spawnOptions }) spawns a child carrying an ownership mark: FRONTMCP_OWNER=<marker>:<owner pid> in its environment and --frontmcp-owner=<marker>:<owner pid> as its last
argument. Returns { child, stop(signal?, graceMs?) }, where stop() stops the child (with its tree when it was
spawned detached, always on Windows) and kills what outlives graceMs. A marker is up to 64 letters, digits, ., _ and -; anything else throws OwnedProcessError.
reapOrphans(marker, { graceMs? }) reads the process table with ps -A -ww -o pid=,ppid=,pgid=,stat=,command=,
finds the processes tagged with that marker whose owner pid no longer runs (a pid this user may not signal counts
as running), and stops each one with the processes it started and the rest of its process group: SIGTERM, then SIGKILL after graceMs (default 2000). A process whose owner runs, with another marker, or with none is left
alone, and so are the calling process, its ancestors and the leader of its process group (a task worker started
through npx tsx that reaps would otherwise stop its own launchers). A stopped orphan that its new parent does not
collect (a zombie, as under a container's PID 1 without an init) counts as stopped. Resolves with the pids of the
orphans it stopped. On Windows it does nothing and resolves with [] (documented); a ps that fails throws OwnedProcessError with the reason (a slim Debian image has no ps, and Alpine's busybox ps refuses -ww).
watchParent({ onGone, intervalMs?, stdin? }) reports 'parent-exited' when this process is reparented (the
ppid changed) or the parent pid no longer runs (Windows does not reparent), polling every second by default, and 'stdin-ended' when the given stream ends or closes. Once, then it stops. A process started by init (ppid 0 or 1,
for example PID 1 in a container) has no parent to poll.
watchPath(path, { onGone, intervalMs? }) reports a removed path once, for example a deleted checkout (polls existsSync, default every second).
Every timer is unref'd and every watcher has close().
runStdio() shuts down when its client goes away. When stdin ends or the parent exits, it runs the same
shutdown as SIGTERM (frontMcp.shutdown(), so every scope is shut down and disposed and M01's provider onShutdown() hooks run in their order), closes the MCP server and exits 0, within the stdio deadline. There is no
second shutdown mechanism: exitOnShutdownSignals() gains a whenOrphaned option that triggers its existing
handler, and tells the shutdown what triggered it. When stdin ends, the requests still in flight are answered
first, for up to 2 seconds (STDIO_DRAIN_MS): a client that writes its requests and closes stdin
(cat requests.jsonl | node dist/main.js) still gets every reply. The stdio router tracks the requests it still
owes a reply (whenIdle()); a subscriptions/listen stream, which only a cancellation ends, is not waited for. Under frontmcp dev --stdio --serve (the IPC channel, with stdin ignored) only the parent is watched.
A line is logged: stdin ended; shutting down or The parent process exited; shutting down.
New option lifecycle.exitWhenOrphaned (boolean, Zod-validated: lifecycle.exitWhenOrphaned must be true or false). On by default for runStdio(); false turns it off. Off by default for runUnixSocket() and the HTTP
server (bootstrap()), because their daemons (frontmcp socket --background, a built CLI's daemon start)
are detached on purpose and outlive the process that started them; true turns it on (parent only, no stdin).
CliTaskRunner spawns its workers with spawnOwned under the new exported marker TASK_WORKER_MARKER
('frontmcp-task'), so reapOrphans(TASK_WORKER_MARKER) stops the workers whose server is gone. Workers are not
reaped automatically: a detached worker is meant to finish its task and write the outcome to the store after a
server restart.
Different from the plan, and why:
watchRoot is named watchPath, as in the brief, and is a utility only: nothing in the SDK calls it yet (M21 uses
it for the shared server's checkout).
The owner tag is a trailing argument, so a command must accept it as an argument. A script run by node does; node -e <code> reads it as a node option unless the arguments end with -- (documented on spawnOwned). Finding
processes by argument keeps reapOrphans on plain ps on macOS and Linux: the environment of another process is
not portably readable, and a child's children inherit the environment variable but not the argument, so an
unmarked grandchild is never mistaken for an owned process (it is still stopped as part of its orphaned parent's
tree).
The Windows fallback is a no-op, not a PowerShell process query: the CLI's Windows tree helpers still cover the
processes FrontMCP stops itself.
One change outside the plan, to keep the browser bundle within its budget: Scope loaded mkdir with a lazy import('@frontmcp/utils'), which made a bundler keep every export of @frontmcp/utils in an app's browser bundle,
so the new process module alone pushed create() + one tool 5.8 KB over its 1,315,000-byte budget. mkdir already
loads fs on first use, so Scope now imports it statically like its other @frontmcp/utils imports. The bundle
went from 1,313,808 bytes (parent branch) to 1,287,662 (create() + one tool) and from 1,321,121 to 1,294,962
(with WebMcpPlugin); what remains of the process module there is what CliTaskRunner and the shutdown helper
reference.
User-facing change
What changed:
New @frontmcp/utils exports: spawnOwned, reapOrphans, watchParent, watchPath, OwnedProcessError, and
the types SpawnOwnedOptions, OwnedProcess, ReapOrphansOptions, ParentGoneReason, ProcessWatcher, WatchParentOptions, WatchPathOptions; processTreeSpawnOptions, signalProcessTree, isProcessTreeAlive, stopProcessTree and ProcessTreeDeps move there from the CLI's internals.
New option @FrontMcp({ lifecycle: { exitWhenOrphaned } }).
New @frontmcp/sdk export TASK_WORKER_MARKER.
New log lines (info): stdin ended; shutting down, The parent process exited; shutting down.
Before → after:
A stdio server whose stdin ends (client closed it or exited): ran on while anything held its event loop, and
otherwise ended without running onShutdown() or onDispose() → the replies still owed are written (up to 2 s),
then a graceful shutdown with every provider's onShutdown(), exit 0.
A stdio server whose parent dies while stdin stays open (a shared pipe, a wrapper): ran on → the same shutdown
within about a second.
To keep the old behaviour: lifecycle: { exitWhenOrphaned: false }.
The HTTP server and runUnixSocket(): unchanged unless lifecycle.exitWhenOrphaned: true.
A CLI task worker's command line gains a trailing --frontmcp-owner=frontmcp-task:<server pid> and its
environment FRONTMCP_OWNER; a tasks.cliRunnerCommand that refuses unknown arguments must accept it.
frontmcp.dev pages affected (if known): the stdio transport and MCP client integration pages, the @FrontMcp
configuration reference (lifecycle), the provider lifecycle page (onShutdown() on a stdio client leaving), the
CLI binary and daemon production pages, the background tasks page (TASK_WORKER_MARKER, reaping), and the @frontmcp/utils reference (process helpers).
Skills catalog entries updated:
frontmcp-deployment/references/mcp-client-integration.md: stdio key points (no orphans, the replies owed when
stdin ends, the option).
frontmcp-development/references/create-provider.md: onShutdown() row and lifecycle.exitWhenOrphaned.
frontmcp-production-readiness/references/production-cli-binary.md (EOF handled by the framework), references/production-cli-daemon.md (opt-in for daemons, reaping task workers, what the reaper spares, where ps is missing), examples/production-cli-binary/stdio-transport-error-handling.md (drops the manual process.stdin.on('end', () => process.exit(0)), which skipped onShutdown()); skills-manifest.json.
Tests
Red first: the unit specs and both e2e specs were written before the code and run against the parent's sources. The
SDK specs failed (8 of 9); the stdio e2e failed both cases (still running after stdin closed, the server still alive
10 s after its parent died), using an entrypoint whose provider keeps a timer until onShutdown(), as a pool would.
The fixes from the second review were red first too: the in-flight e2e case lost its reply; the router specs had no whenIdle(); the reaper stopped the caller's marked ancestors and its group, and reported [] after 3 s for an orphan
left a zombie; stop() on a child without its own process group resolved true in 3 ms with the child still running.
Unit, @frontmcp/utils (69 suites, 1999 pass; the process module: 99.0% statements, 100% functions, 99.6%
lines):
process/__tests__/process-tree.spec.ts and process-tree.windows.spec.ts: moved from the CLI unchanged.
process/__tests__/owned-process.spec.ts (24): the child sees FRONTMCP_OWNER and the trailing tag with the
caller's environment kept; stop() stops a running child's tree; stop() on a child without its own process
group stops it alone and kills it when it ignores SIGTERM; a command that could not start has nothing to stop;
invalid markers refused; ps output parsing, zombie state included; an orphan stopped with its descendants and
its group, unmarked processes and other markers untouched; an owner that still runs, or that this user may not
signal, keeps its processes; the calling process, its marked ancestors (an npx → tsx → node worker chain) and
the leader of its group are never stopped; SIGKILL after the grace period; an orphan left a zombie counts as
stopped without SIGKILL; an orphan that survives SIGKILL is not reported; Windows does nothing; ps failures
(stderr, exit code, spawn error) reject with OwnedProcessError; a real orphan found with ps and stopped while
a live owned child of the test is left running. The real-ps case was also run on Linux (node:24, procps-ng
4.0.2), with the reaper as PID 1 (the orphan stays a zombie) and under --init.
process/__tests__/process-watch.spec.ts (11): reparenting, a parent pid that stops running, EPERM treated as
running, stdin end, stdin close without end, stdin that ended before the watch started, ppid 1 not polled, close(), the real defaults; watchPath on a removed directory and after close().
Unit, @frontmcp/sdk (579 suites, 7479 pass):
front-mcp/__tests__/run-stdio-orphaned.spec.ts: by default runStdio() watches the parent with process.stdin; on stdin-ended it runs the provider's onShutdown() and exits 0.
front-mcp/__tests__/exit-when-orphaned.spec.ts (9): exitOnShutdownSignals({ whenOrphaned }) shuts down once and
exits 0 for either reason (a later SIGTERM does nothing), tells the shutdown its trigger and logs the reason; a
signal closes the watch; no watch unless asked; the remover closes the watch; lifecycle.exitWhenOrphaned accepted as a boolean and refused otherwise with its message; false turns the stdio watch off; runUnixSocket() watches only with true (and without stdin); bootstrap()
watches with true.
transport/__tests__/stdio-revision-router.spec.ts (7 new, whenIdle()): resolves at once with nothing owed;
waits for the session-era server's reply and for a 2026-07-28 reply; stops waiting for a cancelled request and when
the connection closes; does not wait for a subscriptions/listen stream; gives up after the timeout.
task/helpers/__tests__/cli-task-runner.spec.ts: a real worker spawned by CliTaskRunner receives __run-task <id>, the owner tag and FRONTMCP_OWNER=frontmcp-task:<pid>.
Unit, CLI (122 suites, 2083 pass): frontmcp dev and the bridge's child supervisor on the moved helpers.
E2E:
apps/e2e/demo-e2e-stdio-transport/e2e/stdio-orphaned.e2e.spec.ts (3): closing stdin runs the shutdown phase
(marker file from onShutdown()) and exits 0; a slow-echo call (500 ms) still in flight when stdin closes gets
its reply before the shutdown phase; killing the parent (src/stdio-orphan-parent.ts, whose relay keeps
the server's stdin open after it dies) makes the server run its shutdown phase and exit within 10 s (about 1 s).
The helper gains closeStdin() and kill().
apps/e2e/demo-e2e-local-runtime/e2e/reap-orphans.e2e.spec.ts: a fixture owner spawns a marked and an unmarked
detached child and exits; reapOrphans(marker) stops the marked one only, leaves the unmarked one and a marked
child of the live test process running, and finds nothing the second time.
apps/e2e/demo-e2e-dts-consumer/fixture/process-kit-must-compile.ts: lifecycle.exitWhenOrphaned (a string is a
type error), spawnOwned (the marker is required), reapOrphans(TASK_WORKER_MARKER), OwnedProcessError, watchParent / watchPath and their types, against the built declarations.
Run:nx affected -t lint test build --base=origin/feat/m02-local-sqlite for the 23 affected libraries: all pass,
no new lint warnings in the changed files. nx test for demo-e2e-stdio-transport (29), demo-e2e-local-runtime
(4), demo-e2e-dts-consumer (14), demo-e2e-bundle-size (10), demo-e2e-direct (89), demo-e2e-providers (30),
and demo-e2e-cli-exec's cli-dev-stdio (8, including --serve over IPC, where only the parent is watched) and cli-stdio (2): all pass. nx test skills (249). tsc --noEmit for utils, cli and sdk (with specs) and the touched
e2e apps: no new errors. fix-unused-imports and prettier on the changed files. After the second review: nx run-many -t test lint -p utils sdk skills (1999, 7479 and 249 pass; no new lint warnings), nx test for demo-e2e-stdio-transport (30), demo-e2e-local-runtime (4), demo-e2e-dts-consumer (14) and demo-e2e-bundle-size (10: 1,288,136 and 1,295,436 bytes), tsc --noEmit for utils and sdk with specs.

New Features
Stdio servers now shut down gracefully when stdin closes or their parent process exits, allowing in-flight requests up to two seconds to finish. This behavior can be disabled with a lifecycle option.
Added process management capabilities to track parent processes, stop owned workers, and reap orphaned workers. Task workers can now be reaped when their server exits.
Documentation
Updated guidance on stdio shutdown behavior and process management.
…n when orphaned
Move the CLI's process-tree helpers into a Node-only process module in
@frontmcp/utils, with spawnOwned, reapOrphans, watchParent and watchPath.
runStdio shuts down through the normal shutdown path when stdin ends or
the parent exits (lifecycle.exitWhenOrphaned, on by default for stdio,
opt-in for the HTTP and Unix socket servers). CliTaskRunner spawns its
workers owned under TASK_WORKER_MARKER so orphaned ones can be reaped.
…ke @frontmcp/utils
The lazy import('@frontmcp/utils') in Scope kept every export of the
barrel in an app's browser bundle, the new process helpers included.
mkdir already loads fs on first use, so a static import is enough.
runStdio attaches the watcher after the providers' onReady() hooks, so a
client that closed stdin meanwhile left the server running. Also document
the orphan behaviour on runStdio and runUnixSocket.
…opped, and stop a child without its own group
- reapOrphans never stops the calling process, its ancestors or the leader of its process group. A task worker
started through `npx tsx` carries the owner tag on its launchers too, so a worker that reaped after its server
died stopped its own launchers and their group.
- A stopped orphan that its new parent does not collect (a zombie, as under a container's PID 1 without an init)
counts as stopped: `kill(pid, 0)` still reaches a zombie, so the reaper waited out the grace period, sent SIGKILL
and reported nothing. `ps` now reads the `stat` column.
- OwnedProcess.stop() on a child spawned without `detached` signals the child itself and kills it after the grace
period. It resolved `true` at once while the child was still running, since such a child leads no process group.
…before shutting down
A stdio client that writes its requests and closes stdin (`cat requests.jsonl | node dist/main.js`) lost the reply
to any request still running: the orphan watch started the shutdown as soon as stdin ended, and closed the server
under it. Now `exitOnShutdownSignals()` tells the shutdown what triggered it, and on `stdin-ended` `runStdio()`
first waits, for up to 2 seconds (`STDIO_DRAIN_MS`), until the stdio router has written every reply it owes
(`StdioRevisionRouter.whenIdle()`; a cancelled request and a `subscriptions/listen` stream owe none). A signal
also stops the orphan watch, so a shutdown already under way logs no second reason.

Walkthrough
The PR adds process ownership, orphan reaping, and parent and path watchers to the utilities. The SDK uses orphan watchers to trigger shutdown, drains pending stdio requests after stdin ends, and marks task workers for reaping. E2E tests and documentation cover these changes.

Summary
Owned process tools and exports libs/utils/src/process/*, libs/utils/src/index.ts, libs/utils/README.md, libs/utils/src/fs/fs.ts, libs/cli/src/commands/dev/*
Adds owned-process spawning and orphan reaping, updates lazy loading for process operations, exports the process APIs, and updates CLI imports to use @frontmcp/utils.
Parent and path watchers libs/utils/src/process/process-watch.ts, libs/utils/src/process/__tests__/process-watch.spec.ts
Adds closable watchers for parent-process changes, stdin ending, and path removal, with tests for trigger and cleanup behavior.
The new orphan-reaping test can fail even when reaping works. Adjust that assertion and bring the SDK test into line with its filesystem rule; the remaining identified risk is bounded.

Review comment at @libs/sdk/src/task/helpers/__tests__/cli-task-runner.spec.ts
at line 1:
Replace the `node:fs` imports in the test with `mkdtemp`, `readFile`, and `rm`
from `@frontmcp/utils`; update their call sites to await the asynchronous
operations while preserving the existing test behavior.
reapOrphans() counts a stopped orphan its new parent has not reaped yet (a
zombie) as stopped, but the spec then checked it with kill(pid, 0), which
still succeeds on a zombie. The result of reapOrphans() already asserts it.
Answer to the review-body finding of the review on 9e00c9b:
node:fs in libs/sdk/src/task/helpers/__tests__/cli-task-runner.spec.ts: not changed. The @frontmcp/utils file-system rule covers library code; a spec that needs a throwaway directory uses mkdtempSync/rmSync from node:fs across the repo (the storage-sqlite and SDK storage specs do the same).
Also merged feat/m02-local-sqlite (db4b9bf) into this branch. Local runs on cb55f70: nx test storage-sqlite 239/239, nx test demo-e2e-local-runtime 4/4.
