perf(utils, auth, sdk): keep server-only code out of browser builds - #1030
The browser bundle grew with every feature of the M10–M21 stack (#1014–#1026): create() + one tool by about 17 KB minified since main 91531eb, and the budget of a Vite app's initial chunk from 960,000 to 964,390 bytes. Most of that is code a server in a web page can never run. This PR keeps it out of browser builds. Node and Cloudflare Workers resolve the same files as before, and every request still runs through the same hookable flows.
Measured first
Ranked by the esbuild metafile of create() + one tool (minified bytes, by package) and by the module list of the Vite build's initial chunk (rendered bytes before minification):

The cause is the shape of @frontmcp/utils and @frontmcp/auth: each publishes one bundled ES module.
Vite (Rollup) chunks by module. Anything a lazily loaded SDK chunk takes from utils or auth lands with the rest of the file in the initial chunk: the stdio bridge and process supervision of the shared local server (M20/M21), the storage change feed (M13, and the M17 raise), people sign-in (M16), the shared-server identity, the auth pages, the Redis and Vercel KV session stores. All of auth (245,921 bytes rendered) and most of utils was in the initial chunk.
esbuild can't drop a lazy import inside a bundled file. utils' and auth's own import()s (the storage adapters, the CIMD Redis cache) became __esm initializers that run with the file, so every bundler keeps them.
In the SDK itself, two server-only modules were still on create()'s path: the scope's dynamic import of task/index kept CliTaskRunner (it spawns detached workers through spawnOwned, pulling utils' process supervision), and FrontMcpInstance imported the file log transport for its Node entry points.
What changes
@frontmcp/utils and @frontmcp/auth ship a browser build of one ES module per source file, built by scripts/build-browser-modules.mjs, the script behind the SDK's browser build (perf(sdk): a shakeable per-module browser build, gated by size (#827, part 1 of 3) #856), under a browser export condition. A bundler keeps only the modules the page reaches and puts the ones lazy features use in their chunks. A worker condition listed first keeps Workers on the ESM bundle, whose #async-context, #crypto-provider and friends resolve to the Node implementations that run under nodejs_compat. Node's require and import resolve as before.
utils: rsaVerify imports its WebCrypto path from a new crypto/web-rsa.ts instead of require('./browser'), which the per-module build can't express. #crypto-provider's browser variant re-exports it, so its surface is unchanged. The Node bundles no longer inline the browser crypto provider and @noble/* behind that require.
SDK: the scope loads tasks from task/task-scope.runtime (the store factory, registry, in-process runner, notifier and the four task flows) and loads CliTaskRunner only with tasks.runner: 'cli'. @frontmcp/sdk's exports don't change.
SDK: the file log transport loads with the Node entry points that use it, createForCli() and runStdio(). The console redirect of runStdio() still happens synchronously, before anything else.
No feature's browser support changes: nothing that worked in a page stops working, and nothing is refused that wasn't before.
Not in this PR: the Redis, Upstash, Vercel KV and Cloudflare KV storage adapters (about 20 KB) are still in a non-splitting esbuild bundle, reached through createStorage() (from @frontmcp/guard and the task store), whose import()s a splitting bundler (Vite, webpack, esbuild with splitting: true) already puts in chunks of their own. Which store a browser build picks belongs to the store-selection change running in parallel.
Bundle size
Measured on the base (perf/p05-startup-heap at 3b92e82 with 05732fe's budgets) and on this branch, same machine, nx run-many -t build -p sdk plugin-webmcp --skip-nx-cache, then nx test demo-e2e-bundle-size (identical across two runs).

User-facing change
What changed: a browser bundler (the browser condition: Vite, webpack, esbuild with platform: 'browser') now resolves @frontmcp/utils and @frontmcp/auth to a build of one ES module per source file, as it already did for @frontmcp/sdk. Server-only code (the stdio bridge, process supervision, people sign-in, the auth pages, the Redis session stores) stays out of the page. Node (require, import) and Workers (worker) resolve the same files as before. @frontmcp/sdk loads CliTaskRunner only with tasks.runner: 'cli', and the file log transport only in createForCli() and runStdio(); its exports don't change.
Before → after:create() + one tool in a browser bundle (esbuild, minified) 1,339,977 → 1,292,553 bytes; the initial chunk of a Vite app 964,695 → 761,067 bytes.
frontmcp.dev pages affected (if known): the browser build / deploy-to-browser page (its note on the per-module browser build).
Skills catalog entries updated:frontmcp-deployment/references/build-for-browser.md (the browser builds of sdk, utils and auth are per module; server-only code stays out of the page).
Tests
apps/e2e/demo-e2e-bundle-size: NEVER_BUNDLED (what create() never needs) gains the single-file utils and auth builds (the ESM bundle, and the CommonJS one a require() without the module condition resolves), the CLI task runner with utils' process supervision, the file log transport, the stdio bridge, the storage change feed, people sign-in, the shared-server identity, the auth pages and the Redis / Vercel KV auth stores. It was checked against both esbuild bundles; it is now also checked against the Vite initial chunk, whose helper reports the modules it renders. Against the base export maps: 3 failed (the single-file utils and auth in both esbuild bundles and in the Vite initial chunk). The three budgets are lowered. DEFAULT_CONFIG_MODULES follows the scope's task import to task/task-scope.runtime.mjs. nx test demo-e2e-bundle-size: 7 suites, 24 tests passed (the Worker bundle, the shared-chunks page bundle and module order included).
scripts/worker-export-conditions.test.mjs: for utils and auth, a browser import gets the per-module build, a browser require() without module (jest-environment-jsdom) the CommonJS build it got before, and a worker and Node the files they got before. 11 passed.
Unit: libs/utils/src/crypto/__tests__/web-rsa.spec.ts (RS256 and PS256/384/512 verified with WebCrypto, tampered data refused, no WebCrypto, rsaVerify outside Node); libs/sdk/src/task/__tests__/task-runner-selection.spec.ts (in-process by default, the CLI runner with tasks.runner: 'cli', refused without a shared store).
nx test utils 2,117 passed, nx test auth 2,855 passed, nx test sdk 661 suites, 9,260 tests passed, nx test demo-e2e-dts-consumer 33 passed.
nx run-many -t lint -p utils auth sdk: no errors. tsc --noEmit over the utils and sdk spec projects and the e2e project: no errors in the changed files. Prettier clean.
@frontmcp/utils and @frontmcp/auth now ship a browser build of one ES
module per source file, under a `browser` export condition, built like the
SDK's. A bundler keeps only the modules a page reaches, so the stdio
bridge, process supervision, the change feed, people sign-in, the auth
pages and the Redis session stores stay out of it. A `worker` condition
listed first keeps Workers on the ESM bundle; Node resolves as before.
utils' rsaVerify imports its WebCrypto path instead of require('./browser').
The SDK loads CliTaskRunner only with tasks.runner: 'cli', and the file log
transport only in createForCli() and runStdio().
create() + one tool: 1,339,977 -> 1,292,553 bytes (esbuild, minified);
with WebMcpPlugin 1,347,154 -> 1,299,736; Vite initial chunk
964,695 -> 761,067. The budgets follow, and the bundle-size e2e checks
that none of these modules reach either bundle or the initial chunk.
… browser bundles
A require() of @frontmcp/utils or @frontmcp/auth in a bundler with the browser
condition and without `module` (the bundle-size e2e's esbuild config) resolves
dist/index.js. The never-bundled list only named dist/esm/index.mjs, so a second
copy pulled in that way went unnoticed. It now names both single-file builds.
The export-condition check also pins the require() side: a browser require()
without `module` (jest-environment-jsdom) keeps the CommonJS build, and a worker
gets the same files as Node.
…3-browser-size
scope.instance.ts keeps this branch's lazily loaded task runtime and CLI runner with F02's tasks.store: false handling (serverRedisForTasks). The browser budgets are re-fitted from a fresh measurement in the next commit.
…1028
With #1028 merged in, create() + one tool is 1,294,971 bytes, with WebMcpPlugin 1,302,155, and Vite's initial chunk 761,771. Each budget is that size plus the headroom it was set with (536, 224 and 132 bytes): 1,295,507, 1,302,379 and 761,903.

Walkthrough
The change adds browser ESM builds and conditional exports for auth and utils, routes browser RSA verification through WebCrypto, and loads selected SDK logging and task-runner modules dynamically. The bundle-size test now checks Vite initial-chunk contents and size against updated budgets and exclusions.
Changes: Browser module boundaries and bundle checks
Browser RSA verification uses crypto.subtle for RS256, PS256, PS384, and PS512. Tests cover valid and tampered data, missing WebCrypto, and the non-Node rsaVerify path.
Auth and utils add browser ESM build targets and browser and worker export conditions. Tests check export resolution, and the browser build guidance covers both packages.
SDK task and logging runtime loading libs/sdk/src/task/task-scope.runtime.ts, libs/sdk/src/scope/scope.instance.ts, libs/sdk/src/task/__tests__/task-runner-selection.spec.ts, libs/sdk/src/front-mcp/front-mcp.ts
Task setup loads task runtime APIs and loads the CLI runner only when configured for a non-worker scope. CLI and stdio startup load the file-log transport asynchronously. Tests cover task-runner selection and the persistent-backend requirement.
Vite bundle measurement and checks apps/e2e/demo-e2e-bundle-size/e2e/helpers/browser-bundle.ts, apps/e2e/demo-e2e-bundle-size/e2e/helpers/vite-initial-chunk.mjs, apps/e2e/demo-e2e-bundle-size/e2e/browser-bundle-size.e2e.spec.ts
The Vite helper reports initial module paths and byte totals. The test uses those results, updates bundle budgets and exclusions, and checks that excluded modules are not in the initial chunk.
The change is mergeable with a bounded test-coverage risk: on Windows, the bundle check may miss server-only code in the initial chunk.
