Fixes #5956

Summary

  • Propagate fatal non-retryable LLM model/request/auth configuration errors (LLMError, BudgetExceededError) across start(), run(), chat(), astart(), arun(), and achat() after Rich UI error display and chat_history rollback.
  • Propagate streaming errors from OpenAIClient.process_stream_response and process_stream_response_async instead of returning None.
  • Sanitize API keys/credentials in LLMError and Rich UI output while surfacing model_name in str(exc).
  • Preserve explicit empty/invalid llm= values and prevent duplicate chat() execution in TTY start() steering wrapper.
  • Add 23 unit/regression tests in src/praisonai-agents/tests/unit/agent/test_invalid_llm_propagation.py.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Invalid or non-retryable model configuration and authentication errors are now reported consistently across synchronous, asynchronous, and streaming interactions.
    • Error messages and logs redact API keys and other configured secrets while retaining useful model details.
    • A missing model setting now uses the default; other explicitly supplied values are no longer silently replaced.
    • Steering-message lookup issues no longer prevent normal chat from proceeding.

…chat (MervinPraison#5956)

- Sanitize API keys and credentials in LLMError messages and Rich UI display
  while surfacing model_name in LLMError.__str__().
- Re-raise fatal non-retryable LLM configuration/model/auth errors from sync
and async chat/start/run paths (including custom LLM and streaming paths)
after Rich UI rendering and chat_history rollback.
- Propagate stream errors from OpenAIClient.process_stream_response{,_async}
instead of returning None so async TTY streaming classifies and raises LLMError.
- Preserve explicit empty/invalid llm arguments instead of silently defaulting
to gpt-4o-mini, and isolate steering checks in TTY start() to avoid double calls.
- Add unit and regression tests covering sync/async start(), run(), chat(),
Rich UI error display + propagation, secret redaction, and non-zero exit codes.

📝 Walkthrough

Agent model validation and LLM error handling now distinguish fatal configuration failures from other errors. Error messages are sanitized across agent and provider paths. Sync, async, streaming, and execution entry points handle these errors, with regression tests covering propagation and secret redaction.

Changes: LLM error handling and propagation

Layer / File(s) Summary
LLM error sanitization and provider reporting
src/praisonai-agents/praisonaiagents/errors.py, src/praisonai-agents/praisonaiagents/llm/llm.py, src/praisonai-agents/praisonaiagents/llm/openai_client.py
Adds secret redaction for LLM error messages. Provider response and streaming handlers display or log sanitized text and re-raise exceptions.
Model validation and chat error handling
src/praisonai-agents/praisonaiagents/agent/agent.py, src/praisonai-agents/praisonaiagents/agent/chat_mixin.py
Validates default-provider model values and classifies LLM errors. Sync, async, and streaming chat paths handle fatal errors, history rollback, and durable-run finalization.
Execution entry points and regression coverage
src/praisonai-agents/praisonaiagents/agent/execution_mixin.py, src/praisonai-agents/tests/unit/agent/test_invalid_llm_propagation.py
Documents run() and start() error behavior. Separates steering lookup errors from chat errors and adds regression tests for propagation, invalid values, and secret redaction.

Explanation

Active direct link: #5956. Coding objectives, grouped:

  1. [#5956] Hard LLM failures propagate as LLMError across TTY, non-TTY, and streaming paths.
  • Non-TTY sync: test_start_raises_on_invalid_model_non_tty.
  • TTY sync after Rich display: test_start_raises_on_invalid_model_tty_after_rich_display. The test records the displayed error and asserts it is raised anyway. It also asserts one provider call.
  • Streaming: test_start_stream_raises_on_invalid_model and test_astart_tty_streaming_raises_llm_error_via_real_openai_client.
  • Code: the openai_client.py diff at head replaces the return None in process_stream_response (sync) and process_stream_response_async with a bare raise. This closes the silent-success path.
  1. [#5956] Consistent start(), run(), and chat() behavior, plus async counterparts.
  • Tests cover start, run, chat, astart, arun, and achat for invalid model errors, custom LLM strings and dicts, and invalid llm values ("", whitespace, 12345, object()).
  • Chat history rollback is asserted (chat_history == []).
  • run(return_outcome=True) reports reason "failed".
  1. [#5956] Unhandled failures produce a non-zero exit.
  • test_unhandled_start_exits_nonzero_in_subprocess runs a child process and asserts returncode != 0 and "LLMError" in stderr.
  • The test uses an invalid blank llm value, not a provider 404. The propagation tests in group 1 cover the provider path.
  1. [#5956] Error messages do not expose API keys.
  • test_no_api_key_in_str_exc, test_sanitize_llm_error_message_preserves_model_name, and the Rich display assertion check redaction.
  • openai_client.py now sanitizes logged stream errors with the client API key as an extra secret and the model as a preserved token.
  • The summary reports matching sanitization in llm.py and errors.py. I did not read those hunks directly.
  1. [#5956] Documentation that run() is for automation and start() for interactive use.
  • This is a documentation task. It is non-coding and is not assessed. The summary reports docstring changes in execution_mixin.py.

Limits: I did not execute the test suite. The chat_mixin.py and execution_mixin.py behavior rests on the change summary and the test assertions. The openai_client.py diff was read directly. Coding requirements appear covered by the reviewed head.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Changes at the reviewed head (whole-PR diff from merge base e22d74a to head b5619d8) map to the #5956 objectives or the PR's stated secondary goals:

  • agent.py: default-model fallback applies only when llm is None. This preserves explicit falsy llm values. It is tied to the invalid llm= objective.
  • chat_mixin.py: LLM error classification, propagation, sanitization, and durable-run finalization for LLMError. This is the core propagation change.
  • errors.py: sanitize_llm_error_message, LLMError extra_secrets, model name in str. This implements secret hygiene and surfaces model_name.
  • llm.py and openai_client.py: sanitized error logging and re-raise. These implement streaming propagation and secret hygiene.
  • execution_mixin.py: the start() TTY steering wrapper. It prevents duplicate chat() execution and re-raises errors. The steering-lookup isolation, which lets chat proceed, and the appended steering message are adjacent to the wrapper fix. They are not clearly unrelated, so this is not a FAIL. Reviewers should confirm the steering behavior is intended.
  • test_invalid_llm_propagation.py: regression tests for the objectives.

No change was found that is clearly unrelated to #5956 or to the PR's stated scope.

P1 security Error output exposes credentials

LLMError.__str__() prints model_name without redacting it. With OpenAI credentials configured, Agent(llm={'api_key': 'private-provider-key'}) reaches _validate_default_llm_model(), which uses the whole dictionary's repr() as model_name. The message is scrubbed, but the appended model field exposes the key in the exception and Rich output.

Sanitize the displayed model field, and avoid using whole configuration objects as model names.

How this was verified: An invalid configuration dictionary reaches model_name=repr(self.llm), and LLMError.__str__() prints that value without redaction.

P1 Rejected turns remain in history

The new BudgetExceededError branches re-raise before rolling back chat_history. In the default backend, the user message is already appended when the pre-call budget check raises. Both chat() and achat() now leave that unanswered message behind, unlike the previous generic error handlers. Later turns receive a message from a request that never ran.

Roll back this turn's history before propagating budget errors, and add sync and async regression tests.

@claude You are the FINAL architecture reviewer. If the branch is under MervinPraison/PraisonAI (not a fork), you are able to make modifications to this branch and push directly. SCOPE: Review changes in this PR. Python SDK: praisonaiagents, praisonai. TypeScript SDK: src/praisonai-ts/. Do NOT modify src/praisonai-rust. Read ALL comments above from Gemini, Qodo, CodeRabbit, and Copilot carefully before responding.

MANDATORY READ (before reviewing):

  • Always read src/praisonai-agents/AGENTS.md
  • If this PR touches src/praisonai-ts/, also read src/praisonai-ts/AGENTS.md §2.1.2 (TS triage + PR review checklist)

Phase 1: Review per AGENTS.md

  1. Protocol-driven: check heavy implementations vs core SDK
  2. Backward compatible: ensure zero feature regressions
  3. Performance: no hot-path regressions
  4. SDK value: review in depth whether the change genuinely adds value to the SDK — never add features for the sake of adding them. It must strengthen the SDK (simpler, more user-friendly, robust, world-class, secure). If it does not clearly add value, request changes or recommend rejecting/closing rather than merging scope creep
  5. Do not bloat the Agent class with additional params — only if absolutely required; we already support many params.
  6. Repo routing: agent-callable tools → PraisonAI-Tools; lifecycle plugins → PraisonAI-Plugins; optional sandbox backends → PraisonAI-Plugins (praisonai.sandbox entry point) — request changes if wrongly added to praisonaiagents/
6b. External tool examples (examples/tools/external/**): If the diff is confined to that path, mark SDK value ❌ for monorepo merge — redirect the contributor to PraisonAI-Tools; do not Approve for merge unless the PR has the maintainer-accept-example label.
6c. New vendor *_tools.py in core (src/praisonai-agents/praisonaiagents/tools/): If the PR adds a new *_tools.py for a third-party API/SaaS/dataset (e.g. FXMacroData), mark Repo routing ❌ and SDK value ❌ — redirect to MervinPraison/PraisonAI-Tools. Do not Approve because legacy bundled tools (Tavily/Exa/You.com/etc.) already in core are not precedent for new vendor modules. Request changes or recommend closing unless the PR has maintainer-accept-core-tools.

Security review: FAIL

This FAIL is about review coverage. I did not find anything malicious. I could not read the whole diff, and for an outsider fork PR an incomplete review has to fail.

Why I couldn't finish: The output of get_pull_request_files was 60.5 KB, so the tool cut it off. I could only see the first ~2 KB. I tried two ways to read the rest in smaller pieces (get_commit with pagination, and get_file_contents on the fork branch), and both calls were denied permission in this run. That leaves most of the 748 added and 60 removed lines across 7 files unread. That includes chat_mixin.py (+224/−34), the OpenAI client streaming path, errors.py (new sanitize_llm_error_message), and the new test file.

What I did see:

  • agent.py (+1/−1): model_name = llm or Agent._get_default_model() becomes Agent._get_default_model() if llm is None else llm. This is safe in itself: no network, exec or secrets involved. It does change behaviour, though. llm="" (or any falsy value other than None) used to fall back to the default model. Now it is passed through and the call fails. That fits the issue (Agent.start() with invalid llm= may not raise to callers — Rich UI shows error but scripts see success #5956), but it can break users who pass llm="" or llm=os.getenv("MODEL", "") and relied on the fallback. It needs a maintainer decision and a changelog note.
  • chat_mixin.py, first lines only: new imports of AgentErrorKind, LLMError and sanitize_llm_error_message from ..errors. These are internal modules, so the imports are harmless.

Checklist (based on the PR description plus the visible lines):

# Item Status
1 Scope ⚠️ Partly unverified. The description bundles several changes on top of the issue: credential redaction in LLMError and the Rich UI output, streaming error propagation in OpenAIClient, the llm= handling change, and a change to the TTY start() steering wrapper ("prevent duplicate chat() execution"; "steering-message lookup issues no longer prevent normal chat"). The steering-wrapper change is a likely "while I was here" change and needs justification.
2 Exfiltration / network ❓ Not verified for unseen lines
3 Code execution ❓ Not verified for unseen lines
4 Secrets ⚠️ The PR adds secret-redaction logic, so this is directly security-relevant. Redaction that is incomplete or reads env vars to "find" secrets has to be checked line by line. I could not do that.
5 Weakened controls ❓ Error handling in start/run/chat/astart/arun/achat changes. I could not confirm whether BudgetExceededError and the approval/guardrail exceptions still propagate unchanged.
6 Supply chain ✅ The 7 files listed are all source and test files under src/praisonai-agents/. No visible manifest, CI or conftest.py changes, but I could not inspect the full file list.
7 Obfuscation ❓ Not verified
8 Tests ❓ 23 new tests, contents not inspected
9 Backdoors ❓ Not verified
10 Injection artifacts The PR body contains only normal CodeRabbit boilerplate. Code comments not inspected.

Deterministic risk flags: no flag list was included in this request, so there was none to address.

Normal review (limited to what I could see)

  • Architecture: The change stays in the core SDK with no new dependencies, Agent params or exports. That is in line with AGENTS.md. agent.py grows by 0 net lines. ✅
  • Size: +748 lines for "invalid llm should raise instead of returning None" is large. A minimal fix would re-raise the fatal LLMError in the chat paths and in process_stream_response. The secret sanitizer and the steering-wrapper rework would be better as separate PRs so each can be reviewed alone.
  • Behaviour change: Errors that used to come back as None from start()/chat() will now raise. Downstream code (workflows, AgentTeam, the CLI) that checks for None should be audited, and this should be called out as a breaking change.
  • CI: The PR is labelled pipeline/blocked:ci (merge_state UNSTABLE). CI should be green before merging.

Recommendation: A maintainer should review the full diff by hand, especially chat_mixin.py, the sanitizer in errors.py, and the streaming changes in the OpenAI client. Or re-run this review with file-content or commit access so the whole diff can be checked.

Sanitize the remaining raw exception logs in this client.

This PR sanitizes the stream-processing error logs. create_completion and acreate_completion still log the raw {e}. chat_completion_with_tools and achat_completion_with_tools call these methods in their non-streaming branches. A provider or local server that echoes a credential in its error text can still write that credential to the log. The same applies to the logs in parse_structured_output and aparse_structured_output.

Apply the same sanitize_llm_error_message call used in the stream handlers. This keeps the secret-hygiene goal of the PR consistent across all client entry points.

🛡️ Proposed fix for create_completion (apply the same change to the other three sites)
         except Exception as e:
- self.logger.error(f"Error creating completion: {e}")
+ from ..errors import sanitize_llm_error_message
+ self.logger.error(
+ "Error creating completion: "
+ f"{sanitize_llm_error_message(str(e), extra_secrets=(self.api_key,), preserve_tokens=(model,))}"
+ )
             raise

Based on learnings: "Flag catch blocks or logging statements that directly log full exception objects ... without sanitization, since these can leak secrets into logs."

Normalize an empty PRAISONAI_MODEL value in the wrapper.

When PRAISONAI_MODEL is set to an empty string, the wrapper passes llm="" to Agent. The changed branch retains it, and the first chat() raises a non-retryable LLMError instead of using gpt-4o-mini. Normalize the wrapper value while preserving explicit empty-value validation in Agent.

Normalize empty PRAISONAI_MODEL values in the wrapper defaults before they are
passed to Agent, using gpt-4o-mini when the environment value is empty or unset.
Update each wrapper model configuration that reads PRAISONAI_MODEL, while
preserving Agent’s explicit validation of empty llm values supplied directly.

Suppress the raw provider exception when propagating fatal LLM errors.

LLMError sanitizes its own message, but raise error from e and the equivalent custom-LLM and async raises preserve the unsanitized provider exception as __cause__. Python’s unhandled traceback prints that cause, so a provider message containing the configured API key can reach stderr through start(), run(), or chat().

Apply the same correction to all fatal OpenAI and custom-LLM wrapping sites:

Suggested fix
-raise error from e
+raise error from None

-raise error from exc
+raise error from None

-raise llm_error from e
+raise llm_error from None

Update the fatal OpenAI and custom-LLM exception wrapping paths that construct
LLMError to suppress exception chaining, including synchronous and asynchronous
raises, so the unsanitized provider exception is not exposed as the cause.
