Repository navigation
docs(examples): add model-free Sem MCP code lookup - #5979
Add a standalone example alongside the existing Python MCP examples showing local code navigation through the existing MCP client. It exposes only sem_find, looks up an entity without model credentials by default, and offers an optional agent explanation mode.
No SDK APIs, dependencies, default providers, or transports are changed. The example validates the repository and executable, restores the working directory, and shuts down the MCP connection with its context manager. It documents source disclosure in model-backed mode and that scope is not a security boundary.
Validation
Live lookup through PraisonAI built from this checkout and released Sem 0.28.1 in an Ubuntu 24.04 Modal sandbox: found greeting in example.py.
Optional --ask model-backed mode was not run; no model credentials were used. Full SDK test suite not run for this standalone example.

New Features
Added a Python command-line example for looking up an exact entity name in a Git working tree.
The example supports direct lookups without model credentials, plus an optional AI-assisted mode that requires an API key.
It verifies that the selected directory is inside a Git working tree and restores the original working directory after a lookup.
Lookup requires the Sem and Git command-line tools to be available.

Summary
CLI setup and validation examples/python/mcp/sem-mcp.py
Documents CLI use and validates the repository directory, Git working tree, required executables, and the model key when --ask is set.
Requires exactly one MCP tool named sem_find. Runs a direct tool call or an agent query, raises RuntimeError for a returned mcp_error, restores the prior working directory, and invokes main() when run directly.

Redirected explanations disappear
With --ask, redirecting stdout to a file or pipe loses the explanation. Agent defaults to silent output and only enables its display for an interactive terminal. This call discards the returned answer. Capture and print it with the agent display disabled, so both terminal and redirected runs produce one answer.

Failed lookups report success
A lookup timeout or broken MCP connection returns a string beginning with Error:, not a dictionary with mcp_error. Those failures bypass this check, get printed to stdout, and leave the script with a successful exit status. Handle the client's string-form failures too, so callers can tell that the lookup failed.
@claude You are the FINAL architecture reviewer. If the branch is under MervinPraison/PraisonAI (not a fork), you are able to make modifications to this branch and push directly. SCOPE: Review changes in this PR. Python SDK: praisonaiagents, praisonai. TypeScript SDK: src/praisonai-ts/. Do NOT modify src/praisonai-rust. Read ALL comments above from Gemini, Qodo, CodeRabbit, and Copilot carefully before responding.
MANDATORY READ (before reviewing):
Always read src/praisonai-agents/AGENTS.md
If this PR touches src/praisonai-ts/, also read src/praisonai-ts/AGENTS.md §2.1.2 (TS triage + PR review checklist)
Phase 1: Review per AGENTS.md
Protocol-driven: check heavy implementations vs core SDK
Backward compatible: ensure zero feature regressions
Performance: no hot-path regressions
SDK value: review in depth whether the change genuinely adds value to the SDK — never add features for the sake of adding them. It must strengthen the SDK (simpler, more user-friendly, robust, world-class, secure). If it does not clearly add value, request changes or recommend rejecting/closing rather than merging scope creep
Do not bloat the Agent class with additional params — only if absolutely required; we already support many params.
Repo routing: agent-callable tools → PraisonAI-Tools; lifecycle plugins → PraisonAI-Plugins; optional sandbox backends → PraisonAI-Plugins (praisonai.sandbox entry point) — request changes if wrongly added to praisonaiagents/
6b. External tool examples (examples/tools/external/**): If the diff is confined to that path, mark SDK value ❌ for monorepo merge — redirect the contributor to PraisonAI-Tools; do not Approve for merge unless the PR has the maintainer-accept-example label.
6c. New vendor *_tools.py in core (src/praisonai-agents/praisonaiagents/tools/): If the PR adds a new *_tools.py for a third-party API/SaaS/dataset (e.g. FXMacroData), mark Repo routing ❌ and SDK value ❌ — redirect to MervinPraison/PraisonAI-Tools. Do not Approve because legacy bundled tools (Tavily/Exa/You.com/etc.) already in core are not precedent for new vendor modules. Request changes or recommend closing unless the PR has maintainer-accept-core-tools.
MANDATORY COMMENT FORMAT — include this Phase 1 table in your review comment:

Phase 2: FIX Valid Issues
7. For any VALID bugs or architectural flaws found by Gemini, CodeRabbit, Qodo, Copilot, or any other reviewer: implement the fix
8. Also independently identify and fix any gaps or issues you find in the changed code — do not rely only on prior reviewer feedback
9. Push all code fixes directly to THIS branch (do NOT create a new PR)
10. Comment a summary of exact files modified and what you skipped
Phase 3: Final Verdict
11. Never Approve or write “Approve for merge” if any Phase 1 row is ❌, if rule 6b/6c applies, or if the change belongs in PraisonAI-Tools/PraisonAI-Plugins. Use Request changes, redirect to the external repo, and recommend closing the monorepo PR when routing is wrong.
12. Approve only when every Phase 1 row is ✅ (including Repo routing and SDK value) and blocking issues are resolved; otherwise request changes with clear action items
Security review: PASS (advisory — a maintainer still has to decide on merge)
I reviewed this from the PR data alone. I ran nothing and fetched nothing from the fork. The diff adds one new file, examples/python/mcp/sem-mcp.py (+73 lines), and changes nothing else.

Check
Result
1
Scope
One example file that matches the stated purpose. No SDK, wrapper, manifest or CI changes.
2
Network / exfiltration
The code makes no direct network calls. The docstring has one URL (github.com/Ataraxy-Labs/sem), which is only an install pointer and is never fetched. With --ask, repository context goes to OpenAI through the normal Agent/LLM path. The docstring says so.
3
Code execution
subprocess.run(["git","-C",repo,"rev-parse","--show-toplevel"]) uses a list of arguments with no shell=True, and the user path is passed as one argument. It's safe. The MCP stdio client starts the sem binary from the user's PATH. That is a third-party, unpinned executable the user installs themselves. This is expected for an MCP example, but maintainers should know the example promotes an external binary. No eval/exec/pickle/dynamic imports beyond a normal lazy from praisonaiagents import Agent.
4
Secrets
It reads OPENAI_API_KEY only to check that it exists. The value is never logged or printed.
5
Weakened controls
None. The example narrows the tool surface (allowed_tools=["sem_find"] plus a check that exactly that one tool is exposed).
6
Supply chain
No dependency, lockfile, entry point, conftest or workflow changes.
7
Obfuscation
None seen: plain ASCII, short lines, no blobs.
8
Tests
None removed or loosened. The example has no tests, which is normal for examples/.
9
Backdoors
No hard-coded credentials, magic values or user/date/host-keyed behaviour.
10
Injection artifacts
The only text addressed to an LLM is the Agent instructions/prompt, which is legitimate example content. I found no text aimed at reviewers or AI tools in the code, docstring or PR body.
Deterministic flags:subprocess (#3) and the OPENAI_API_KEY env read (#4) are both covered above and are safe as written.
Disclosure: the author says they are affiliated with Ataraxy Labs, the project behind Sem. This is a vendor-specific integration example. Whether to accept it is a product/routing decision for the maintainer, not a security issue.
Code review
Architecture / routing. This is example-only and adds no SDK surface, params or dependencies, so it passes the lightweight checks. Two caveats:
It is a vendor-specific integration example. Per AGENTS.md, vendor integrations usually belong in PraisonAI-Tools or PraisonAIDocs rather than this repo. The maintainer should decide whether vendor MCP examples are wanted in examples/python/mcp/.
If kept, the matching docs page belongs in PraisonAIDocs, not here.
Items to check before merge:
allowed_tools= kwarg on MCP(...): I couldn't confirm that praisonaiagents.MCP accepts this parameter (I had no repo search access). If it doesn't, the call raises TypeError or silently ignores the argument. The later len(tools) != 1 check would still catch the second case, but please confirm the parameter exists.
tools[0].__name__ and tools[0](query=...): these assume get_tools() returns plain callables named after the MCP tool, and that sem_find's argument is called query. Both depend on the Sem server schema and the MCP wrapper, and neither is checked anywhere in this repo.
os.chdir(repository): changing the working directory is process-global. It's acceptable for a standalone script, and it's restored in finally. If MCP supports a cwd/env option for the stdio child, passing that instead would be cleaner.
Parsed-but-unused output:probe.stdout (the repo top-level) is never used. The script still runs Sem from whatever subdirectory was given, which is fine, but resolving to --show-toplevel would match the docstring's "repository" wording better.
Untested --ask mode: the author says the model-backed mode was not run. Hard-coding llm="gpt-4o-mini" is fine for an example.
Verdict: there are no security concerns. Merging is a maintainer call on whether a vendor-affiliated example belongs in this repo. If it stays, please confirm item 1 first.

Return a failure status for MCP tool-call errors.
The PraisonAI MCP client can return a failed tool call as an "Error: ..." string. This check handles only dictionary errors. If Sem fails during a lookup, the CLI can print the error and exit with status zero. Handle the client’s string error form before printing so callers can detect the failed lookup.
