Description

This feature allows users to customize the Networks and Studios sliders that are default on the Seerr home screen. Similar to how you can add a single TMDB network slider or TMDB studio slider by referencing a TMBD network or studio ID, this allows you to add up to 50 total networks or studios to the respective slider with their TMDB IDs.

This stemmed from my household wanting to browse different networks. At first, I added custom TMDB Network sliders to the homepage, but as all users share a home page setup, I wasn't enjoying scrolling through all those different sliders my household requested, and wanted a cleaner alternative.

  • The default behavior, and data, is the same as the current default behavior, using the same hardcoded list of networks.
  • The code is intentionally written to fall back to the original default list if there is ever invalid data stored. Only valid custom network lists or studio lists will show. This is mostly in case there ever is an issue with the TMDB connection and anything changes on their end.
  • Up to 50 networks or studios are allowed to be shown
  • When multiple sliders are updated in a single batch request, all sliders are validated before any are saved. If any slider fails validation, the entire batch is rejected and no changes are saved.

The majority of the changes are UX / cosmetic:

  • a new editable version of the NetworkSlider and StudioSlider component, that provides a list of networks or studios, and allows re-ordering, and removing
  • an input field that allows input of a TMDB ID to add that network or studio to the list
  • Pop-up feedback that alert the user to successful and unsuccessful actions
  • A button to revert back to the original network or studio list

There is one update to data storage, and that is filling in the data column of the row in the discover_slider table. The column seems to previously be unused. The column is reset back to its current state if the user chooses to "Reset Networks (or studios) to Default", it clears that column and shows the original list. One thing to note is there is a difference between a null value, and a saved empty array value [] in this column: null or empty string will fall back to the default network list, while an empty array will show "No networks selected" (unlikely but possible if a user deletes all networks).

AI Disclosure: I designed the approach and wrote the original implementation myself. I asked Claude questions about how the repository was set up, where to find components I needed to modify, where to place new components, where shared constants and translations were located, how UX / styling was used in similar components to match UX, and how the database stores information about the existing sliders. AI was used to write tests and comments, and once the code was implemented, I used AI to review the code and suggest improvements, some of which, like regex for image paths, I implemented. The original work was only for networks. I updated the code to include studios as well, and used Claude to help port my networks code to use with studios.

How Has This Been Tested?

  • I ran all tests locally using pnpm test
  • I tested my changes by running the app locally at localhost:5055, starting from a scratch db, and testing it in the UI.
  • I tested my changes by building a docker image. I have been using this docker image for a few weeks now as my primary Seerr app, and swapping my image for the official image caused no issues. I pushed that image up to Docker Hub, and that image can be found here for testing.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Customize Discover Networks and Studios by adding entries by TMDB ID, reordering or removing them, and restoring the default lists.
    • Each list supports up to 50 entries, with feedback for invalid, duplicate, unavailable, or logo-less entries.
    • Empty custom lists display no entries; unset lists use the defaults.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Invalid slider updates are rejected before saving, preventing partially applied bulk updates.
    • Adding a studio no longer adds it to the Networks list.

Walkthrough

The Networks and Studios sliders now support editable custom brand lists. The settings API validates and stores list data, returns errors for invalid or oversized lists, and supports clearing custom data to use defaults.

Changes: Discover Brand Lists

Layer / File(s) Summary
Brand list contracts and normalization
server/constants/discover.ts, server/constants/error.ts, server/lib/discoverBrands.ts, server/lib/discoverNetworks.ts, server/lib/discoverStudios.ts, server/lib/*.test.ts, src/components/Discover/brandLists.ts, src/components/Discover/networks.ts, src/components/Discover/studios.ts
Shared schemas and utilities define brand fields, validate logo paths, deduplicate IDs, enforce 50-item limits, and parse or serialize Networks and Studios lists.
Settings validation and persistence
server/routes/settings/discover.ts, server/routes/settings/discover.test.ts, server/entity/DiscoverSlider.ts, server/migration/..., seerr-api.yml
Settings routes validate built-in Networks and Studios data before saving. Slider data uses nullable text storage. Tests cover validation, batch updates, clearing data, and separate network and studio lists. The API specification documents the data format and error responses.
Brand list editors and sliders
src/components/Discover/BrandListEditor/index.tsx, src/components/Discover/NetworkSlider/*, src/components/Discover/StudioSlider/*, src/components/BrandCard/index.tsx, src/components/Discover/DiscoverSliderEdit/index.tsx, src/i18n/locale/en.json
A shared editor supports adding, removing, reordering, and resetting brands. Networks and Studios sliders render parsed lists and show the editor when editing is enabled. Localized messages cover editor actions, validation, and empty lists.
Discover state integration and coverage
src/components/Discover/index.tsx, cypress/e2e/settings/discover-customization.cy.ts
Discover passes stored data to each slider, handles list-validation errors, and merges refreshed slider state. Cypress tests cover adding entries, duplicate entries, missing logos, and lookup errors.

Merge Risk: Minimal · previous review 2ac05

This change adds customizable Networks and Studios sliders with validated, saved lists that fall back to the defaults. No concrete merge-blocking risk was identified in the supplied context.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 23915

Editing remains administrator-only, and validation restricts network values and image paths. No introduced security defect was established, but interrupted updates, concurrent edits, and rollback behavior remain incompletely verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Configuration changes affect the shared Discover experience for authenticated users of the installation, rather than a single user's private preferences. Exploiting the inspected write paths requires administrator authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Stored network metadata crosses into browser navigation and image rendering only after entry-schema parsing. Numeric IDs form application-relative links; restricted logo paths extend a fixed TMDB image URL; names reach React text or image attributes rather than an inspected raw-HTML sink.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Malformed persisted entries fall back to defaults, and asynchronous editor lookups recheck the latest list and mounted state before applying results. These controls contain malformed-data and late-response effects, but do not establish recovery guarantees for interrupted database writes.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — If the 50-network contract is intended for every Networks-type slider, enforce it across generic creation, non-built-in updates, and the shared reader. Currently, the count limit is applied by the built-in server sanitizer rather than the shared array schema. This is a contract-hardening proposal, not a verified security finding.

I noticed the existing batch slider update doesn't validate before saving (so partial saves are possible). Should my changes stay, or would you prefer to keep the existing behavior for backward compatibility?

My changes surfaced this for me when I was testing errors, and would see that sliders saved prior to the network slider changes saved, but the network slider and those after the network slider didn't.

Assert persisted data for both sliders.

The test currently checks only the response length. A regression that omits or miswrites either slider's data can still pass. Read both rows from the repository and compare their distinct values.

Suggested fix
     assert.equal(response.status, 200);
     assert.equal(response.body.length, 2);

Make the first batch update differ from its stored value.

The first slider uses the same data, enabled, and order values as its stored state. An early save before the second slider is rejected would pass the current assertions. No related test covers this partial-write path.

Just to note, I updated this PR to include Studios as well. It originally only included networks as that was my household usage, but after discussion on discord and a few other forums, studios were requested and it was a simple addition here.

The Studios row shows the same kind of list as the Networks row: brands
with an id, a name and a logo. Move the parts that do not depend on
networks into shared code so both rows can use it.
Let the built-in Studios slider keep an admin-edited list, the same way
the Networks slider does.
Let admins choose which studios the Studios row shows, the same way
they choose networks. While customizing Discover, the row shows an
editor to add a studio by its TMDB ID, remove or reorder studios, and
reset to the default studios.
