"5 ways to host PostgreSQL databases" compares local, self-managed, cloud-provider and third-party PostgreSQL hosting, with a "When to choose Prisma Postgres" list and an FAQ.

Changes

  • "When to choose Prisma Postgres", new first case: a Postgres database on your laptop to put online. From PostgreSQL 17 or older it takes three steps (create the database, pg_dump, pg_restore); the Free plan includes 2 GB of storage with no time limit and no credit card. It links Migrate a local Postgres database to the cloud (Prisma Postgres). The list named no case for moving an existing local database, although the FAQ below already covers the import.
  • Same list, the TypeScript case: it tied the fit to Prisma ORM ("It pairs directly with Prisma ORM"). It now reads "You want to keep your Postgres client. Any Postgres client works; in a TypeScript stack it also pairs with Prisma ORM for an end-to-end type-safe data layer", which matches the client-neutral line in "Third-party offerings" and the Prisma Postgres docs.
  • FAQ "Is there a free way to host PostgreSQL?": "a free tier" now gives the Free plan's terms and limits: $0 a month, no credit card, no time limit, 200k operations a month, 2 GB of storage and 50 databases.
  • No lastUpdated bump, per the repo's AGENTS.md ("Don't bump dates"), matching Describe Prisma Postgres in the PostgreSQL hosting guide with documented facts #527 and Link the Postgres import docs and describe Prisma Postgres client-neutrally #531. The page has no update-history list.

Checks

  • git diff --check: clean.
  • prettier --check on the changed file: pass.
  • npm test: 78/78 pass.
  • npm run typecheck: pass.
  • Full build not run; CI covers the build and the internal link and anchor check. The one new link points to prisma.io docs (200).
  • Claims check on the diff, this body and the commit message: 1 match, none a claim for Prisma. It is "docker" in the existing first sentence of the free-hosting FAQ ("a local install or Docker container is free"), which is about running PostgreSQL yourself.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

In "When to choose Prisma Postgres", add a first case for moving a
database from a laptop online: three steps (create the database,
pg_dump, pg_restore) from PostgreSQL 17 or older, the Free plan's 2 GB
of storage with no time limit and no credit card, and a link to the
Prisma Postgres import docs.

The TypeScript case tied the fit to Prisma ORM; it now says any Postgres
client works and that in a TypeScript stack it also pairs with Prisma
ORM, as the Prisma Postgres docs state.

The FAQ "Is there a free way to host PostgreSQL?" now gives the Free
plan's terms and limits from the pricing page instead of "a free tier".

Change walkthrough

Change walkthrough

This PR updates the 5 ways to host PostgreSQL article with three prose edits: a new first case in the "When to choose Prisma Postgres" list for migrating a laptop database online, a client-neutral rewording of the TypeScript case, and concrete Free plan terms in the free-hosting FAQ.

Claims verified. Every new factual statement traces to the live sources: the import docs page (returns 200) confirms the three steps (create the database, pg_dump, pg_restore), the PostgreSQL 17 ceiling ("cannot dump a PostgreSQL 18 server"), and the Free plan's 2 GB storage and no-credit-card terms; the pricing page confirms $0/month, "Free forever", 200k operations/month, 2 GB storage and 50 databases.

Internal consistency. The new bullet's "From PostgreSQL 17 or older" phrasing matches the article's own FAQ on local-to-hosted migration (line 331), which already explains the version-17 tool and source-server requirements and the PostgreSQL 18 caveat. The reworded TypeScript bullet aligns with the client-neutral line in the third-party offerings section (line 225) and the Prisma Postgres docs, and the comparison table's "Best for" entry for Prisma Postgres ("TypeScript stacks") remains supported since the bullet retains the Prisma ORM pairing for TypeScript stacks. The new docs link reuses the exact link text of the existing link at line 331, and follows the file's convention of bare prisma.io/docs/... URLs without utm parameters (product, console and pricing links carry utm; docs links do not).

Process compliance. The frontmatter has no lastUpdated field, complying with AGENTS.md's "Don't bump dates" rule. The article's content-verification.json record is level unreviewed, so no evidence-regeneration gate is triggered by this prose-only change.

Checks. Prettier and the test suite could not be run in the review sandbox (no node_modules; the prettier config requires prettier-plugin-prisma), but the changed lines match the file's single-line-paragraph formatting and CI covers the build plus internal link and anchor checks. The one new external link was verified directly and resolves with HTTP 200.
