"5 ways to host PostgreSQL databases" compares local, self-managed, cloud-provider and third-party PostgreSQL hosting, with a "When to choose Prisma Postgres" list and an FAQ.

Changes

  • FAQ "Can I develop locally and deploy to a hosted database?" is now "How do I move a Postgres database from my laptop online?". The old answer opened with the development workflow and reached the data move only in its second paragraph.
  • The answer now opens with the move: with Prisma Postgres, from PostgreSQL 17 or older, it takes three steps (create the database, pg_dump, pg_restore), and the Free plan includes 2 GB of storage with no time limit and no credit card. This matches the laptop bullet in "When to choose Prisma Postgres".
  • It links the import docs page (already linked before) and the blog post that compares Prisma Postgres with Neon, Render, Railway and Supabase by database size.
  • Kept from the old answer: the PostgreSQL 17 tools requirement, the note that moving from PostgreSQL 18 needs a separate process, and the local or Docker development workflow with a connection-string swap.
  • The heading's anchor changes from #can-i-develop-locally-and-deploy-to-a-hosted-database to #how-do-i-move-a-postgres-database-from-my-laptop-online. No page in this repo links the old anchor.
  • No lastUpdated bump, per AGENTS.md ("Don't bump dates"), matching 5 ways to host PostgreSQL: laptop database case and Free plan limits #532 and 5 ways to host PostgreSQL: Prisma Postgres best-for cell leads with the laptop case #535. The page has no update-history list.

Checks

  • git diff --check: clean; additions are ASCII.
  • prettier --check on the changed file: pass (the pre-commit hook changed nothing).
  • npm test: 78/78 pass.
  • npm run typecheck: pass.
  • Full build not run; CI covers the build and the internal link and anchor check.
  • Claims check on the diff, this body and the commit message: 2 matches, none a claim for Prisma. Both are "Docker" in the kept development-workflow sentence ("a local or Docker PostgreSQL instance") and in this body's description of it; it is about running PostgreSQL yourself on your machine.

… steps

The FAQ "Can I develop locally and deploy to a hosted database?" becomes
"How do I move a Postgres database from my laptop online?". The answer now
opens with the three import steps (create, pg_dump, pg_restore) and the Free
plan's 2 GB with no time limit and no credit card, links the import docs and
the blog post that compares five services by database size, and keeps the
PostgreSQL 17/18 requirements and the local-development workflow.

Change walkthrough

This PR rewrites one FAQ answer in the PostgreSQL hosting article so the Prisma Postgres migration path leads instead of trailing. The question changes from "Can I develop locally and deploy to a hosted database?" to "How do I move a Postgres database from my laptop online?", and the answer now opens with the three-step import (create the database, pg_dump, pg_restore) plus the Free plan's 2 GB / no-time-limit / no-credit-card terms, before preserving the older material: the PostgreSQL 17 tool requirement, the PostgreSQL 18 caveat, and the local-or-Docker development workflow with the connection-string swap.

How it fits the article. The new opening mirrors the existing "You have a Postgres database on your laptop to put online" bullet in the "When to choose Prisma Postgres" list (line 291) and the comparison-table row (line 283) almost claim-for-claim, so the FAQ and the recommendation section now make the same case with the same numbers. The kept development-workflow paragraph keeps the answer relevant to readers who only wanted the old question answered.
