What problem does this PR solve?

Issue Number: close #70251

Problem Summary:

EXPLAIN ANALYZE, slow logs, and INFORMATION_SCHEMA.SLOW_QUERY report a statement's total RU consumption, but RU v1 users cannot see which request inputs and configured coefficients produced it.

What changed and how does it work?

  • Show the same RU v1 formula in EXPLAIN ANALYZE, slow-log Request_unit_detail, and INFORMATION_SCHEMA.SLOW_QUERY.REQUEST_UNIT_DETAIL.
  • Use the factor snapshot, inputs, and actual RRU/WRU captured by PD through client-go. Validate the formula components and statement total at six-decimal display precision; suppress incomplete or inconsistent formulas while retaining authoritative totals.
  • Subtract failed-write base-cost and byte refunds using FailedWriteBaseCostRefundCount and FailedWriteRefundBytes. Per-batch write cost remains charged. The refund test uses a nonzero per-batch coefficient to verify this distinction.
  • Snapshot the RU version once at statement start and share it between EXPLAIN and slow logs. RU v2 output remains unchanged, and mixed coefficient snapshots suppress the formula.
  • Show TiFlash's final consumption as tiflash_ru(...), since its coefficient inputs are unavailable.

Dependencies:

  • PD #11165 is merged. Use the official github.com/tikv/pd/client v0.0.0-20260908055558-001881051f7e; remove the PD fork replacement.
  • client-go #2046 remains open. Pin its current head with replace github.com/tikv/client-go/v2 => github.com/JmPotato/client-go/v2 v2.0.0-20260908070927-5ec8cbd82875 until it merges.
  • Align kvproto to v0.0.0-20260903054228-107095f1d250 and regenerate Bazel metadata.

Validation on 2026-09-08 used the tree of bffd18ce574c0fce8752983fddca6df206387df0, including current master e2cbef3658386ff7c6bb0436695101516623175f, with the dependency revisions above. All commands used GOTOOLCHAIN=go1.25.12 GOWORK=off.

All checks passed. The integration groups passed 31 and 1,598 cases. Their results were generated with -r and then checked with -t; only the CBO formula needed an update because the current mock coprocessor exposes 386 charged read bytes. Failpoint refcounts returned to zero. The integration/E2E server was a regular build; the named execdetails tests ran with the race detector.

Manual E2E used a fresh local Linux/amd64 cluster: the official PD commit 001881051f7e, the TiDB binary above, and official TiKV/TiFlash images pinned by digest:

pingcap/tikv@sha256:a5069daecdbe8c6b83b8bce595f301c1eb070b7310436f15a1e745fe1bbda84d

Steps and assertions:

  1. Enable Resource Control and set tidb_slow_log_threshold=0. Populate 80 customers, 600 orders and 1,000 items, including JSON/ENUM columns and unique/composite indexes; analyze all three tables.
  2. Run the join/aggregate below, INSERT INTO orders SELECT id+10000,customer_id,item_id,amount+1 FROM orders WHERE id<=120, and UPDATE customers SET tier='vip' WHERE id<=65, each through EXPLAIN ANALYZE. Verify 120 inserted rows and 65 updated rows.
  3. Independently evaluate each displayed arithmetic expression with Decimal arithmetic. Compare RRU and WRU separately with REQUEST_UNIT_READ and REQUEST_UNIT_WRITE at six decimals. Require byte-identical detail strings across the plan, raw slow log and SLOW_QUERY.
  4. POST {"ru-version-policy":{"default":2}} to PD /resource-manager/api/v1/config/controller. Verify RU_detail is absent and REQUEST_UNIT_DETAIL is empty. Restore default 1 and verify the formula returns.
  5. Set TiFlash replica count to 1 for all three tables and wait for INFORMATION_SCHEMA.TIFLASH_REPLICA.AVAILABLE=1. Set tidb_isolation_read_engines='tiflash', tidb_allow_mpp=1, and tidb_enforce_mpp=1; repeat the read. Require actual mpp[tiflash] scans, STORAGE_FROM_MPP=1, and a matching tiflash_ru(...) term.
EXPLAIN ANALYZE
SELECT c.tier, JSON_UNQUOTE(JSON_EXTRACT(c.profile,'$.region')) region,
       COUNT(*) n, SUM(o.amount+i.price) total
FROM customers c JOIN orders o ON c.id=o.customer_id
JOIN items i ON i.id=o.item_id
WHERE c.id<=80 AND o.amount>=10
GROUP BY c.tier,region ORDER BY total DESC;

Observed RU components:

Statement RRU WRU Formula/three output paths
TiKV read 4.624455 0 passed
TiKV INSERT SELECT 0.601016 16.862109 passed
TiKV UPDATE 0.592554 11.375781 passed
Restored RU v1 read 5.440692 0 passed
TiFlash MPP read 1.663752 0 passed (tiflash_ru)

RU v2 suppression also passed. No fatal or panic records were found in the four server logs. The owned test processes and containers were stopped after collecting the evidence. Failed-write refund fault injection was not part of this distributed E2E; its formula contract is covered by the deterministic unit test.

Side effects

  • Performance regression: Consumes more CPU
  • Performance regression: Consumes more Memory
  • Breaking backward compatibility

The request wrapper and calculation aggregation are enabled only for RU v1 statements that collect RUDetails. Existing authoritative totals and limiting behavior are unchanged.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The PR formats RU v1 calculation details, records statement RU versions, adds details to runtime statistics and EXPLAIN ANALYZE, emits and parses Request_unit_detail, exposes it in INFORMATION_SCHEMA.SLOW_QUERY, and updates dependency pins.

Changes

RU detail observability

Layer / File(s) Summary
Dependency and RU version contract
DEPS.bzl, go.mod, pkg/sessionctx/variable/slow_log.go, pkg/util/execdetails/*, pkg/sessionctx/variable/BUILD.bazel, pkg/sessionctx/variable/tests/BUILD.bazel
Dependencies are updated. Statement execution details store the first RU version. Slow-log items define RU version metadata and the request-unit detail field.
RU calculation formatting and runtime output
pkg/util/execdetails/ruv2_metrics.go, pkg/util/execdetails/runtime_stats.go, pkg/util/execdetails/execdetails_test.go, pkg/executor/explain_unit_test.go, tests/integrationtest/r/planner/core/*
RU v1 calculation details are validated and formatted for read, write, and TiFlash costs. Valid details appear in runtime statistics and explain output.
Statement RU version propagation
pkg/executor/adapter.go, pkg/executor/adapter_slow_log.go, pkg/executor/explain.go, pkg/executor/adapter_internal_test.go, pkg/sessionctx/variable/tests/session_test.go
Statement execution records the first RU version. Explain and slow-log paths prefer that value and fall back to the current RU version.
Slow-log output, parsing, and schema
pkg/sessionctx/variable/slow_log.go, pkg/executor/slow_query.go, pkg/infoschema/tables.go, pkg/executor/slow_query_sql_test.go, pkg/executor/slow_query_test.go, pkg/infoschema/test/clustertablestest/tables_test.go
RU v1 emits Request_unit_detail; RU v2 omits the legacy detail. The parser and slow-query schema store the new field. Tests update fixtures and expected results.

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to bffd1

Invalid negative RU inputs may expose misleading calculation details. This is a bounded observability issue with a straightforward fix.

Explanation

The PR satisfies the main RU v1 objectives, including formula output, statement-level version snapshots, validation, suppression of inconsistent details, consistent EXPLAIN/slow-log outputs, TiFlash opaque reporting, and backward-compatible totals. However, issue #70251 also requires RU v2 output to include the weights needed to reproduce TiDB and TiKV component totals. The description explicitly states that RU v2 output remains unchanged, and the reviewable summaries show no RU v2 weight output.

Resolution

Add the required RU v2 calculation weights to EXPLAIN ANALYZE, slow logs, and INFORMATION_SCHEMA.SLOW_QUERY, or update the linked issue and acceptance criteria to remove that requirement. Add regression tests proving that the emitted RU v2 details reproduce tidb_ru, tikv_ru, and the total RU value while preserving existing fields and behavior. Also provide evidence that all required RU v1 inputs, factors, contributions, and source/version metadata are emitted where applicable: #70251.

Make the RU-version precedence test use opposing versions.

The test sets the statement snapshot to V2 but does not explicitly set the current domain to V1. If the current domain already returns V2, fallback behavior can satisfy the expected value and the test will not prove statement snapshot precedence. Configure the current domain for RU v1 before setting the statement snapshot to RU v2.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject negative RU calculation inputs before formatting.

FormatRUCalculationDetail can emit RRU=charged_read_bytes(-5)*READ_BYTES_COST(0.2)=-1.000000, because addRUFormulaTerm skips only zero inputs. Reject negative non-refund inputs so the formatter returns an empty detail.

FormatRUCalculationDetail and its addRUFormulaTerm path to ignore negative
non-refund RU calculation inputs before constructing formula terms, so cases
such as negative ReadBytes produce an empty detail rather than formatted
negative charges; preserve handling of valid positive inputs and legitimate
refunds.
