docs: describe how to follow up on 202 Accepted responses - #671
Conversation
Each 202 now says what the response contains (no body for any of them), what has already happened by the time it returns, and which operation and `state` value to poll to confirm completion. purgeCache states plainly that there is nothing to poll. Descriptions only, matching current API behavior; the regenerated Go client changes in doc comments only. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

| Accepted. The response has no body. The branch's active dev servers are set to `stopping` before this returns and shut down in the background. Poll `getSiteDevServer` (`GET /sites/{site_id}/dev_servers/{dev_server_id}`) or `listSiteDevServers` (`GET /sites/{site_id}/dev_servers`) until `state` is `done` (or `error`). |

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Document the completion condition for every affected dev server.
listSiteDevServers returns multiple DevServer records. State that clients must wait until every affected server reaches done or error; otherwise, a client could stop after one server reaches a terminal state while another remains stopping.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Do not present cancelled as confirmation of sandbox shutdown.
The description says sessions become cancelled before the 202 response returns. A subsequent GET can therefore report cancelled while the sandbox is still shutting down. Clarify that this check confirms session cancellation only, not shutdown completion. Apply the same clarification to the delete and session-stop descriptions and their generated Go comments.

## Why Ora's agent-readiness scan of netlify.com ([report](https://ora.ai/score/netlify.com)) flags the API spec on two checks: - **`api-schema-analysis`**: "only 29% of operations carry a description or summary" - **`function-calling-compat`**: "94/173 typed schemas" Summaries are what LLM function-calling, SDK generators, and docs show first. Without them, an agent picking an operation has only the `operationId` to go on. The Redoc sidebar uses them as titles too. ## What - **A `summary` on every operation** (186/186), e.g. "List a site's deploys" or "Roll back a site's production deploy". Each one is a single line inserted after `operationId`, so the diff is purely additive. - **A `description` on 22 previously undocumented operations**, only where the API has behavior worth stating. Examples: `lockDeploy` (later deploys build but aren't published), `rollbackSiteDeploy` (uses `rollback_id`), `deleteSiteForm` (also deletes submissions), and the asset endpoints (only available to certain sites). - **Response schemas for 4 operations that return JSON but declared none**, each checked against the controller: - `createAgentRunnerUploadUrl` → `{ upload_url, file_key }` (`render json: { upload_url:, file_key: }`, presigned PUT that expires in 1 hour) - `agentRunnerPullRequest`, `agentRunnerCommitToBranch` → `agentRunner` (`render json: @agent_runner`) - `markDevServerActivity` → `devServer` (`render json: @dev_server`) ## Numbers (built `dist/swagger.json`) | | Before | After | |---|---|---| | Operations with a summary or description | 55/186 (29%) | **186/186 (100%)** | | Operations with a `summary` | 0 | 186 | | Operations with a 2xx response schema | 135 | 139 | The other 47 without a 2xx schema, audited against bitballoon (corrected after review; the first version wrongly called 43 of these correct): - **35** really return no body (`head :no_content` / `head :accepted`, or no render). - **Existing spec bugs, not fixed here.** Each one changes a generated Go return type, so they need a separate breaking-change PR: - `updateSiteSnippet` and `updateSiteMetadata` are declared 204 but return 200 with the updated snippet/metadata. The Go client treats that as an "unexpected success response". - `rollbackSiteDeploy` is declared 204 but returns 202 when publishing is gated. - `listFormSubmission` declares an array but returns one submission. - `lockDeploy`, `restoreSiteDeploy` and `readyDeploy` can return 202 with the deploy, but only 200 is declared. - **2** (`updateServiceInstance`, `deleteServiceInstance`) go through shared helpers I didn't trace. - **8** are served outside bitballoon's controllers, so I couldn't verify them and didn't guess: `uploadDeployServer`, `uploadDeployEdgeFunction`, `runSiteDatabaseMigrations`, `restoreSiteDatabaseSnapshot`, `deleteSiteDatabase`, `deleteSiteDatabaseBranch`, `clearSiteDatabaseComputeSettings`, `deleteSiteDatabaseSnapshot`. ## Docs page Redoc uses `summary` for headings and sidebar labels, so adding summaries would have hidden the operationIds that `netlify api --help` points people to. A docs-only Redocly entry (`docs@latest` in `redocly.yml`) runs a small decorator (`src/docs/redocly-plugin.js`) that renders headings as `listSiteDeploys: List a site's deploys`. The sidebar stays sorted by operationId, and the docs list the same operations as before. `swagger.json`, `openapi.json` and `index.d.ts` keep the plain summaries. I couldn't exactly reproduce Ora's "typed schemas" count. Its operation total (173) also differs from the current spec's 186. ## How accuracy was checked Summaries come from the `operationId`, the path, existing descriptions, and the doc comments (`@operation_id`) and code in bitballoon's API controllers. Where a doc comment was wrong, I followed the code: - `updateSiteSnippet`'s comment says "Creates", but the action updates. - `archiveAgentRunner` returns 202, but the archive runs synchronously, so its description makes no "background" claim. - `agentRunnerPullRequest`'s doc comment says the PR comes from the latest completed session. It actually uses the run's own `result_diff`, and both it and `agentRunnerCommitToBranch` queue the work in a background worker. The descriptions now say so and point at the fields to poll. ## Generated code `make generate` was rerun: - Go doc comments now use the summaries. - The 4 responses gain a `Payload` field and `GetPayload()`, plus one new model, `CreateAgentRunnerUploadURLOKBody`. - No method signatures change, and the generated readers still accept an empty body (EOF), so nothing breaks. ## Testing - `make validate` passes, with only the existing unused `buildSetup` warning. - `make generate` and `go build ./go/...` pass. - `go test ./...` passes. - `npm test` (lint, prettier, docs build, unit) passes. Prettier made no changes. Rebased onto #671 (202 polling docs). Regenerating after the rebase produced no diff. 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) --------- Co-authored-by: Sean Roberts <sean.roberts@netlify.com> Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Why
Ora's agent-readiness scan of netlify.com (report) gives partial credit on async-job-pattern: "202 Accepted responses found but no clear polling pattern". Every 202 in the spec just says
OKorAccepted, so an agent that gets one can't tell whether the work is done, still running, or how to check. What
This changes descriptions only. Each 202 now states:
statevalue means the work is doneNo schemas, headers or status codes change. The regenerated Go client differs only in doc comments.
purgeCachestopAgentRunner/deleteAgentRunnerhead :accepted.AgentRunner#stop!sets each active session'sstatetocancelledbefore returning; the sandbox/dev server shuts down in a background worker.getAgentRunnerSession→state: cancelledstopAgentRunnerSession/deleteAgentRunnerSessionhead :accepted.AgentRunnerSession#stop!setsstate: cancelled(anddone_at) before returning.getAgentRunnerSession→state: cancelledarchiveAgentRunnerhead :accepted.archive!setsstate: archivedbefore returning.getAgentRunner→state: archiveddeleteSiteDevServershead :accepted.DevServer.stop_env!setsstate: stopping, andStopTaskWorkerfinishes in the background.getSiteDevServer/listSiteDevServers→state: done(orerror)I verified each row by reading the controller action and model method in netlify/bitballoon.
Not included
Locationheader is documented. None of these actions set one. AddingLocation(pointing at the session or dev server) in the API would let clients follow up without already knowing the poll URL. That's an API change, so it isn't in this PR.restoreSiteDeploy,lockDeployandreadyDeployreturn202with the Deploy body when publishing is gated (server_publish_gated?), but the spec only declares200. Declaring the 202 would change these Go client method signatures (go-swagger returns(*OK, *Accepted, error)when an operation has two success responses), so it's left for a deliberate breaking change. Until then, the Go client probably treats those 202s as errors.Testing
