Give every operation a one-line summary (186/186, up from 0; 29% had any
description before) and add descriptions where the API documents
behavior beyond the summary. Summaries come from the operationId, path,
existing descriptions, and the bitballoon controller doc comments and
code.
Declare the response bodies of four operations that returned JSON with
no schema, each verified against the controller:
- createAgentRunnerUploadUrl: { upload_url, file_key }
- agentRunnerPullRequest, agentRunnerCommitToBranch: agentRunner
- markDevServerActivity: devServer
Regenerated the Go client: doc comments change, and the four responses
gain a Payload field and GetPayload() (additive; empty bodies still
decode).

A few inline comments for consideration.
Also: With summaries in place, Redoc uses them for the sidebar and headings, so operation IDs no longer show up anywhere on the docs page except the URL (compare prod with the preview). netlify api --help sends people to this page to find method names. Might be the right trade for agents, but it's a change for anyone browsing the docs.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
This isn't what the server does — the PR comes from the run's own diff, not the latest completed session's.
AgentRunner#create_pull_request only checks result_diff on the runner and returns 422 when it's empty, whatever the sessions have. latest_completed_session_with_diff exists but nothing calls it, so I think the controller comment this came from is stale. It also only queues the PR (GithubCreatePullRequestWorker.perform_async), so the agentRunner in the new 200 response won't have pr_url set yet.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Good catch, fixed in 28019cf. You're right that the PR uses the run's own result_diff (AgentRunner#create_pull_request returns 422 when it's empty) and that it's queued with GithubCreatePullRequestWorker.perform_async. The description now says that, notes that pr_url is usually unset in the response (pr_is_being_created is true), and says to poll getAgentRunner for pr_url or pr_error. I made the same fix for agentRunnerCommitToBranch, which is also queued, and pointed it at merge_commit_sha / merge_commit_error. One small note: latest_completed_session_with_diff does have a caller, but only GithubCreatePullRequestWorker#build_pr_description (for the agent/model line), so the controller comment is stale exactly as you said.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
Locking a deploy that isn't the published one also publishes it.
Deploy#lock! calls unlock_current_and_make_this_current! first, and when publishing is gated the controller returns 202 instead. Seems like something an agent picking this operation would want to know.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Agreed, fixed in 28019cf. The description now says that locking a deploy that isn't the published one publishes it first (unlock_current_and_make_this_current!), and that a gated publish queues the publish and lock and responds 202 with the deploy (poll getDeploy). Declaring that 202 response would change LockDeploy's Go return type, so it's on the follow-up list in the PR description along with restoreSiteDeploy and readyDeploy.

This one and updateSiteMetadata (line 995) are in the 43 the description calls correct as 204-only, but both return 200 with a body.
bitballoon renders the updated snippet and metadata in both update actions, and the generated Go client turns a 2xx it doesn't expect into an "unexpected success response" error. Not introduced here, and fixing it changes the Go return types, so it probably belongs with the submissions follow-up. I didn't check the rest of the 43.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
You're right, and my "43 are correct" claim was wrong. I audited all 47 operations with no 2xx schema against bitballoon and corrected the PR description. 35 really return no body. The spec bugs are updateSiteSnippet and updateSiteMetadata (200 with body vs declared 204), rollbackSiteDeploy (202 when gated vs declared 204), plus listFormSubmission and the deploy 202s. 2 service-instance ops go through helpers I didn't trace, and 8 are served outside bitballoon. I left the bugs out of this PR, as you suggested, since each changes a Go return type. They're listed together for the breaking-change follow-up.
…le in docs - agentRunnerPullRequest: the PR is built from the run's own result_diff and queued (GithubCreatePullRequestWorker), so pr_url is usually unset in the response; describe polling getAgentRunner for pr_url / pr_error. - agentRunnerCommitToBranch: also queued; describe polling for merge_commit_sha / merge_commit_error. - lockDeploy: locking an unpublished deploy publishes it first, and a gated publish responds 202 with the deploy. - Docs: Redoc headings now use summaries, which hid operationIds that `netlify api --help` points people to. A docs-only Redocly decorator (docs@latest) prefixes each heading with its operationId. swagger.json, openapi.json and index.d.ts keep plain summaries. Declare the 202 response for gated lockDeploy.
When publishing is gated, lockDeploy returns 202 with the deploy. The operation declares only 200 and default, so the generated Go client returns that 202 as LockDeployDefault. The deploy is not exposed through LockDeployOK, and the typed payload is models.Error. Declare the 202 response with the deploy schema, then regenerate the client.

Agreed on the behavior, but not in this PR. A second declared success response makes go-swagger change LockDeploy's signature to return both *LockDeployOK and *LockDeployAccepted, which breaks every existing caller. It's on the PR description's follow-up list for the breaking-change PR, together with restoreSiteDeploy, readyDeploy, rollbackSiteDeploy, updateSiteSnippet/updateSiteMetadata and listFormSubmission. Until then, the description tells callers about the gated 202.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
@sean-roberts Understood. Preserving the existing LockDeploy signature is a valid reason to defer the 202 response declaration to the breaking-change PR. The description documents the gated 202 behavior in the meantime.
The schema mismatch remains, but no change is needed in this PR. Would you like me to open a GitHub issue for the follow-up?

Each docs build now bundles docs@latest into its own mkdtemp directory and removes it afterwards, so concurrent builds can't render each other's spec. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Why
Ora's agent-readiness scan of netlify.com (report) flags the API spec on two checks:
api-schema-analysis: "only 29% of operations carry a description or summary"function-calling-compat: "94/173 typed schemas"Summaries are what LLM function-calling, SDK generators, and docs show first. Without them, an agent picking an operation has only the
operationIdto go on. The Redoc sidebar uses them as titles too. What

Each one is a single line inserted afteroperationId, so the diff is purely additive.descriptionon 22 previously undocumented operations, only where the API has behavior worth stating. Examples:lockDeploy(later deploys build but aren't published),rollbackSiteDeploy(usesrollback_id),deleteSiteForm(also deletes submissions), and the asset endpoints (only available to certain sites).createAgentRunnerUploadUrl→{ upload_url, file_key }(render json: { upload_url:, file_key: }, presigned PUT that expires in 1 hour)agentRunnerPullRequest, agentRunnerCommitToBranch→agentRunner(render json: @agent_runner)markDevServerActivity→devServer(render json: @dev_server)Numbers (built

The Go client treats that as an "unexpected success response".rollbackSiteDeployis declared 204 but returns 202 when publishing is gated.listFormSubmissiondeclares an array but returns one submission.lockDeploy, restoreSiteDeployandreadyDeploycan return 202 with the deploy, but only 200 is declared.updateServiceInstance, deleteServiceInstance) go through shared helpers I didn't trace.uploadDeployServer,uploadDeployEdgeFunction,runSiteDatabaseMigrations,restoreSiteDatabaseSnapshot,deleteSiteDatabase,deleteSiteDatabaseBranch,clearSiteDatabaseComputeSettings,deleteSiteDatabaseSnapshot.Docs page
Redoc uses
summaryfor headings and sidebar labels, so adding summaries would have hidden the operationIds thatnetlify api --helppoints people to. A docs-only Redocly entry (docs@latestinredocly.yml) runs a small decorator (src/docs/redocly-plugin.js) that renders headings aslistSiteDeploys: List a site's deploys. The sidebar stays sorted by operationId, and the docs list the same operations as before.swagger.json,openapi.jsonandindex.d.tskeep the plain summaries.I couldn't exactly reproduce Ora's "typed schemas" count. Its operation total (173) also differs from the current spec's 186.
How accuracy was checked
Summaries come from the
operationId, the path, existing descriptions, and the doc comments (@operation_id) and code in bitballoon's API controllers. Where a doc comment was wrong, I followed the code:updateSiteSnippet's comment says "Creates", but the action updates.archiveAgentRunnerreturns 202, but the archive runs synchronously, so its description makes no "background" claim.agentRunnerPullRequest's doc comment says the PR comes from the latest completed session. It actually uses the run's ownresult_diff, and both it andagentRunnerCommitToBranchqueue the work in a background worker. The descriptions now say so and point at the fields to poll.Generated code
