Summary

Each fix ships with a test that was red before the change.

  • Truncate over-long ElevenLabs/xAI TTS text at a char boundary; byte slicing panicked on CJK text (release builds abort).
  • --rate is optional; the configured rate is no longer overwritten with 200.
  • An unknown --tts value errors instead of silently running the fallback chain.
  • --provider keeps the matching config entry's base_url and timeout.
  • Each playback gets its own temp file (pid + counter), shared by play_bytes and ElevenLabs.
  • Cloud TTS token client gets .no_proxy() like every other client (no test: reqwest exposes no proxy state).
  • Tests that read or remove API-key env vars hold one shared lock.

Not changed: OpenAI reasoning_effort gating (see the follow-up on #13); it stays tied to disable_thinking by design.

Test plan

  • cargo test, cargo clippy --all-targets -- -D warnings, cargo fmt --check
  • Every commit compiles
  • CI ubuntu + macOS

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Long text sent to ElevenLabs and xAI TTS is now truncated safely at character boundaries.
    • Playback uses unique temporary audio files, preventing conflicts during concurrent playback.
    • Google Cloud TTS token requests no longer use system proxy detection.
    • Unknown TTS selections now return a clear error instead of silently falling back.
    • Changing an LLM model preserves the selected provider’s configured URL and timeout.
  • Improvements
    • Omitting --rate now preserves the configured or engine-default speech rate; a supplied rate still overrides it.

…king

Slicing at a fixed byte offset panicked on CJK text, and release builds abort on panic.
OpenAI TTS already truncates by chars and is unaffected.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
--rate defaulted to 200 and always overwrote the configured rate. It is now optional,
so the configured value (or the engine's own default) applies when it is omitted.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
…to auto

A typo in --tts silently ran the whole fallback chain. It now accepts auto, a known
engine alias, or a configured provider name, and errors on anything else.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
… given

--provider rebuilt the provider with no base_url and a fixed timeout, ignoring the
matching config entry. The entry is now used, with only the model replaced by --model.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
play_bytes wrote to a fixed {prefix}.wav, so overlapping playbacks overwrote each other.
The path now includes the pid and a per-call counter; ElevenLabs' unnormalized MP3 path uses the same helper.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Every other HTTP client sets no_proxy() to avoid the CoreFoundation crash; this one did not.
No test: reqwest exposes no way to inspect a built client's proxy settings.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
remove_var in two tests raced concurrent env reads in other tests. They now share one
ENV_LOCK in test_support.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

TTS selection now rejects unknown names and resolves configured providers directly. Rate overrides are optional, and oversized ElevenLabs and xAI text is truncated at UTF-8 character boundaries. Temporary audio files use unique paths. Google Cloud token requests disable system proxy detection.

Changes

TTS behavior and provider fixes

Layer / File(s) Summary
TTS selection and provider configuration
src/pipeline.rs, src/provider_factory.rs, src/pipeline/tests.rs, tests/cli.rs, src/test_support.rs, src/main.rs, src/config.rs, CHANGELOG.md
TTS selection recognizes configured provider names and returns an error for unknown names. Provider creation retains matching configuration while allowing model and API-key overrides. Tests cover engine selection, provider configuration, and environment-variable synchronization.
Optional TTS rate overrides
src/cli.rs, src/pipeline.rs, src/tts/mod.rs
CLI and pipeline rate values are optional. Provider resolution applies a supplied rate and preserves the configured rate when no override is supplied.
UTF-8-safe text truncation
src/tts/elevenlabs.rs, src/tts/xai.rs
ElevenLabs and xAI truncate oversized text at a UTF-8 character boundary within their byte limits. Tests cover multibyte text.
Temporary audio file isolation
src/audio/player.rs, src/tts/elevenlabs.rs
Playback and ElevenLabs fallback audio use unique temporary paths. Temporary files are created exclusively with owner-only permissions, and playback cleanup remains in place.
Google Cloud token requests
src/tts/cloud_tts_auth.rs
The token HTTP client disables system proxy detection and retains its existing timeout.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 5ece8

The temporary-file overwrite concern is addressed. Failed audio writes can still leave partial files behind, but this is a bounded cleanup issue suitable for a small fix or owner-accepted follow-up.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 5ece8

The change strengthens temporary-file isolation and rejects invalid selections. However, repeated failed writes can leave separate partial files, increasing local storage pressure. Crash recovery and compatibility with proxy-enforced network policies remain unverified.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: Temporary-file creation has no rollback when creation succeeds but writing fails. Each repeated attempt now uses a distinct path, so partial artifacts can accumulate rather than reuse the base implementation's fixed WAV or MP3 path. This weakens failure containment for the host's temporary filesystem. Files remain owner-only, and the ability to induce repeated failures or defeat external reaping is unverified.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified accumulation risk affects the invoking process and its selected temporary filesystem. Other workloads could be affected if that filesystem is shared and storage is exhausted. The inspected ElevenLabs caller does not let response content choose paths or confer additional filesystem authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — Repeated playback attempts during write failures can retain distinct partial audio files and prolong storage pressure. This is a conditional resource-containment path: the inspected source establishes retention, but does not establish an independently exploitable remote trigger or actual host exhaustion.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Cloud token exchange now disables detected proxies while retaining its 30-second timeout. The destination remains the service-account token_uri override or the default Google OAuth endpoint. JWT signing, cloud-platform scope, and audience construction remain in the existing authentication flow; deployment requirements for proxy-enforced egress were not supplied.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The shared writer strengthens collision and overwrite protection across playback callers. Cleanup after ordinary playback errors is preserved, so the retained concern is specifically creation/write rollback and interruption recovery, not every playback failure.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Bind cleanup ownership to successful exclusive creation so failed writes remove only files created by that attempt. Preserve cleanup after playback, and define bounded orphan recovery for process interruption without deleting pre-existing paths that exclusive creation refused.

342-347: 🔒 Security & Privacy | 🛡️ Detected with Advanced Tier | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Reachability: Internal
Exploitability: Moderate
CWE: CWE-377 — Insecure Temporary File

Use tempfile::NamedTempFile for both playback paths.

File::create can follow an existing symlink. The PID/counter path remains predictable enough for a local attacker to pre-create on platforms or configurations without applicable symlink protection. Linux protected_symlinks limits some cross-user attacks, but it is not a portable control.

This is an insecure temporary-file issue (CWE-377), not path traversal. The merge base used the same unsafe creation with fixed names, so this PR does not introduce or materially worsen the issue. Use the existing tempfile dependency with an opaque name and the correct suffix, and retain the NamedTempFile through playback. Treat this as a recommended hardening refactor, not a new major regression.

Temp names are predictable (pid + counter) in a possibly shared temp dir.
Opening with create_new refuses a pre-existing path or planted symlink,
and mode 0600 keeps the audio private. A new dependency (tempfile) was
not needed for this.

Addressed the CWE-377 nitpick in the latest commit: temp audio is now opened with create_new (refuses an existing path or planted symlink) and mode 0600, shared by play_bytes and the ElevenLabs MP3 path. Kept the pid+counter naming instead of adding tempfile as a runtime dependency.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Remove the newly created file when writing fails.

If the temporary filesystem fills or a quota is reached, write_all can fail after writing part of the audio. (doc.rust-lang.org) The helper then returns an error without removing the file. Neither caller receives the path, so neither caller reaches its cleanup. Unique filenames let repeated failures accumulate partial audio files.

Remove the file after a write failure. Do not remove an existing path when open fails.
