Summary

  • Default cargo test is now hermetic: no network, no audio, no config/e2e_test.toml. Tests needing keys or audio are #[ignore = "e2e-network" | "e2e-audio"] and run in the e2e job.
  • Dropped the unused lib target, so src unit tests compile and run once instead of twice (four times in CI with the removed --all-features step).
  • Deleted or merged tests that asserted copied logic, derive/default literals, or duplicates; moved offline e2e tests into tests/cli.rs with temp HOME and inline config.
  • Added seams and tests for previously untested branches: pipeline LLM/TTS fallback switching, queue lock timeout, required-field errors, stop hook summarization (std-only fake Ollama), SUMVOX_DISABLE, stdin auto-detect.
  • Extracted build_request in the OpenAI provider and build_piper in the TTS factory so tests call production code.

Coverage receipt (default tier, independent review vs 0399b39)

  • Production regions covered: 2281 → 2754; none lost.
  • Branch sides covered on files llvm-cov can measure: 163 → 200 of 292; none lost.
  • Default tier passing tests: 322 → 168.
  • 12 provider files segfault llvm-cov --branch (LLVM 22.1.x), so branch numbers exclude them.

Notes

  • Trying LLM provider / Using TTS provider info logs no longer include model and voice.
  • Known bugs found during the audit are out of scope and go to a separate fix branch.

Test plan

  • cargo test passes locally on macOS without config/e2e_test.toml
  • cargo clippy --all-targets -- -D warnings, cargo fmt --check
  • Each commit compiles (cargo check --all-targets)
  • CI ubuntu + macOS

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements

    • LLM and speech playback can continue to another configured provider when an earlier provider is unavailable or fails. Successful LLM responses are trimmed, and audio tags are preserved for speech providers that support them.
    • Piper setup can resolve a model from the configured voice, model, or path, and applies the configured or default speech rate.
  • Testing

    • Expanded automated coverage for CLI behavior and provider fallback. End-to-end tests now include audio playback checks.

Tests that replicated production branches inline now either go away or build
the wire struct directly and assert its serialized shape.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Drops tests that only read back constructor arguments, Default literals,
derive output and constants. Assertions that kept trivial trait methods
covered moved into the surviving tests of the same file.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Folds repeated provider availability, engine alias, arg-builder, validation
and transcript cases into their surviving tests as table rows, and drops
e2e and unit tests that only repeated another test's path.

The LLM and TTS fallback loops now take already-built providers so
tests can inject fakes. Provider creation stays lazy in the callers.
The "Trying LLM provider" and "Using TTS provider" info logs no longer
include the model and voice, since the loops only see the provider.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The PR changes LLM and TTS provider handling, adds hermetic CLI integration tests, and updates test execution. It also consolidates or removes unit and E2E tests across audio, configuration, hooks, and provider modules.

Changes

Provider fallback and tests

Layer / File(s) Summary
Provider fallback and tests
src/pipeline.rs, src/pipeline/tests.rs
The pipeline processes LLM and TTS providers in order, continuing after creation, availability, or generation failures. Tests cover fallback outcomes, first-success behavior, and audio-tag support.

CLI integration coverage

Layer / File(s) Summary
CLI integration coverage
src/cli.rs, tests/cli.rs
Adds isolated CLI tests for configuration, command outcomes, notification and stop-hook flows, disabled and muted behavior, and generic JSON input. The CLI unit test retains a Clap command-definition assertion.

LLM request construction and provider tests

Layer / File(s) Summary
LLM request construction and provider tests
src/llm/*
OpenAI request construction selects reasoning, token, and temperature fields by configuration and model family. Provider tests consolidate availability and model-name cases, check Gemini and Ollama serialization, and label network tests with an ignore reason.

TTS factory and provider tests

Layer / File(s) Summary
TTS factory and provider tests
src/tts/*
The Piper factory delegates model-path resolution and rate selection to build_piper. TTS provider tests are consolidated or removed; remaining cases cover provider configuration, availability, text handling, and cost estimates.

Audio provider and playback tests

Layer / File(s) Summary
Audio provider and playback tests
src/audio/*
Audio tests consolidate WAV checks and update coverage for playback-file availability, player selection, volume arguments, and ignored macOS playback.

Configuration, hooks, and data-path tests

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configuration, hooks, and data-path tests
src/config.rs, src/hooks/*, src/error.rs, src/main.rs, src/notify_log.rs, src/queue.rs, src/transcript.rs
Tests are consolidated or removed. Remaining checks cover configuration validation and override precedence, hook input selection, lock timeout behavior, and transcript limits.

Test execution and E2E organization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Test execution and E2E organization
.github/workflows/ci.yml, justfile, Cargo.toml, CONTRIBUTING.md, src/lib.rs, tests/e2e.rs, tests/recommended_config.rs
The workflow and justfile distinguish default tests from ignored E2E and audio tests. The explicit library target and its project-structure entry are removed, and E2E coverage and fixtures are reduced.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Change: Refactor

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to a036e

The test reorganization has no established merge-blocking regression. The OpenAI parameter concern predates this change and does not block this PR on the available evidence.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to a036e

The reviewed changes do not establish a new security exposure. Provider ordering and failure handling remain equivalent, and the new CLI helpers are test-only. Risk is limited, but downstream use of the removed library contract remains unconfirmed.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The flagged CLI entrypoints and high-fanout helpers are private integration-test code. They launch the existing binary with temporary HOME configuration; the fake Ollama server binds only to loopback. They do not create a production listener or public Rust API.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The E2E job remains push-only and retains its E2E_CONFIG environment. The newly added audio step precedes secret configuration writing and does not receive E2E_CONFIG in its step environment. The credential-bearing E2E command remains conditional on configuration availability.

612-612: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Assert the LLM request count before indexing bodies[0].

At Line 612 and Line 700, the test indexes bodies[0] directly. If the binary never calls the LLM, the test panics with an index-out-of-bounds message. That message hides the real failure. test_stop_hook_summarizes_transcript_and_speaks_summary already asserts bodies.len() first. Use the same pattern here.

♻️ Proposed fix
-    assert!(bodies.lock().unwrap()[0].contains("message from hook input"));
+    let bodies = bodies.lock().unwrap();
+    assert_eq!(bodies.len(), 1, "LLM should be called once");
+    assert!(bodies[0].contains("message from hook input"));

761-761: 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Isolate credential removal from the shared test process.

If these credentials are inherited, remove_var permanently deletes them from the test process. Concurrent tests that read these variables can observe different values depending on execution order. Removing variables without setting them still changes shared state.

Run this fallback test in a child process and remove the variables through Command::env_remove. Keep the parent environment unchanged.

Based on learnings: “environment variables are process-global state shared across all threads”; isolate environment changes through a child process.
