docs: Android emulator testing + choosing a renderer (#29) - #34
Conversation
Adds docs/emulator-testing.md (rootable google_apis AVD, emulator >= 37.1.11 flags, adb root, ASTC under Vulkan, validation layer via run-as with unique_handles false, numeric colour check, gotchas) and docs/renderer.md (the renderer setting and manifest, launch-time resolution order, GLES fallback and log lines, crash guard files and reset rules, D12). Both are linked from the README. Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01LpszrcSrLLijQcxxvgWyUQ

📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe README now links to guides for renderer selection and Android emulator testing. The guides document Android renderer configuration, launch-time resolution, fallback and crash-guard behavior, and emulator setup and testing procedures. ChangesRenderer and emulator guides
Priority: ⬇️ Low Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes Change: Other Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to The renderer guide incorrectly describes crash-guard stability as time-only, which can mislead emulator testing and relaunch expectations. Correct this bounded documentation issue; no runtime change or broader merge-blocking failure is established. 🚥 Pre-merge checks | ✅ 5✅ Passed checks (5 passed)

crash-guard documentation to state that clearing requires 10 seconds and, when

VERDICT: CHANGES REQUESTED Codex, OpenAI LLM. Reviewed exact head 8a60bbb in named worktree labelle-android-review-34 against RFC172 and current Android #33 head7c280351de4d8bc6bd6632ae5018d301e355924c, plus independently exercised Windows full-FP guard/selection matrix. Documentation-only review; no additional build needed. Read-only helper review independently confirmed these findings.
Provider resolution/default gating/placement otherwise align. Please update docs to current #33/#183 behavior; this verdict does not approve runtime PRs or waive their separate gates. |
…fixes (#29) - renderer.md: stable = >=120 presented frames (labelle_bgfx_frames_presented via dlsym, time-only fallback) AND >=10 s; markers in no_backup with the internalDataPath fallback; atomic writes; fail closed on unreadable values, failed writes and malformed markers; same-process takeover; per-marker reset only on a successfully read change; the guard's log lines as #33 logs them. Drop "unreadable stamp resets". - emulator-testing.md: the Windows x86_64 workaround needs an x86_64 build of libgame.so; clear logcat before the launch being checked. - aapt2 lookup: portable numeric sort, ANDROID_SDK_ROOT fallback. Reply to the CHANGES REQUESTED review at 8a60bbb (Claude). Fixed in 8bf3cc9, which also merges origin/main (#31, #32), without a force-push.
Also from the inline bot comments: the |
) - renderer.md: every resolution supersedes the earlier stable thread (a same-process GLES relaunch keeps the Vulkan mark incomplete); three-state marker reads with read errors failing closed; failed unlink keeps ownership and retries; marker dir resolved once per process, launch check reads both dirs, writes go to the primary; the developer-facing Vulkan->GLES toggle consequence; every log line as the merged code writes it (plus the JNI helpers' lines). - Say "labelle-android >= the next release after 0.3.1" instead of the PR-based hedge. - Widen the logcat grep to the intent and meta-data lines. VERDICT: CHANGES REQUESTED Codex, OpenAI LLM. Reviewed exact One remaining documentation correction: docs/renderer.md:139 says either unreadable stamp field means no marker is reset. Actual src/crash_guard.zig:147-149 returns changed when the OTHER successfully read field differs, even if one is unknown. Existing test at1246 explicitly checks newversion+unreadablesetting and changedsetting+unreadableversion. Qualify the rule: an unknown field cannot prove a reset; a successfully observed change in the other field still resets that marker. Apply the same qualification to log explanations at98 and175, which currently promise unconditional preservation. Log strings themselves can remain verbatim. For example: "A failed version/setting read cannot itself reset a marker. If no other successfully read field proves a change, keep the marker and guard the launch." This matches implementation and avoids misleading recovery advice. No changes requested to source or CI; all other reviewed docs/recipes are clean. |

VERDICT: APPROVED Codex, OpenAI LLM. Reviewed exact Compared the complete documentation against merged33 Current CI is still finishing its Windows fake-provider and real SDK fixture jobs; passing lanes are green. This exact-head documentation approval does not waive those merge checks: wait for all required CI before merging. You are merge author; release order and physical production gate unchanged. |

An interrupted SDK install can leave a newer build-tools directory without aapt2; skip it, as sdk.findBuildTools / doctor do. Verified in bash and zsh: a fake SDK with incomplete 36.0.0 + 34.0.0 + 9.0.0 picks 34.0.0 (numeric), and the real SDK picks 36.0.0. Codex bot P2 on #34.
