Closes #1817 — AI-4223

What & why

User turns went through the same full markdown pipeline as agent replies, so C:\Users\timot\.config lost the backslash before .config, typed lines ran together and blank lines collapsed. User turns now use a Prompt flavor: an allowlist of Markdig parsers (quotes, lists, fenced code, paragraphs; emphasis, code spans, line breaks) plus bare URLs and ~~strikethrough~~. Every newline is a line break and a run of blank lines between paragraphs is kept. Agent text is unchanged

Where to look

  • ChatPipeline.Prompt clears Markdig's parser lists rather than removing from them, so a parser a Markdig upgrade adds stays off in user turns
  • Two parsing quirks remain: * and _ still delimit emphasis without escapes, so \*x\* renders as italics, and a line like [1]: https://… is still taken as a link definition, which the paragraph parser has no switch for

Verification

  • Desktop app run with a pasted sample covering each rendered and suppressed construct
  • Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit on Linux: 4159 total, 0 failed, 13 skipped (platform-only). The four MarkdownViewTests.A_prompt_* tests pass, and two of them fail with Markdig's stock ListBlockParser swapped back in

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • User-authored prompt text now renders emphasis, strikethrough, code, lists, quotes, and bare URLs as Markdown.
    • Line breaks and blank lines in prompt text are preserved.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Rule-like lines remain text instead of rendering as horizontal rules. Headings, HTML, link syntax, and other unsupported Markdown remain literal.
    • Default chat rendering continues to join lines within paragraphs and treat blank lines as paragraph separators.

📝 Walkthrough

User chat turns now use a prompt-specific Markdown pipeline. It renders selected formatting and bare URLs, preserves source newlines and blank lines, and leaves other Markdown constructs as typed text.

Changes: User prompt rendering

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title states the main change: user chat turns now render as typed, with only Slack-style formatting. The changeset adds a Prompt markdown flavor and a ChatPipeline.Prompt allowlist of Markdig parsers, and applies it to the user-turn MarkdownView. The title is specific and matches the objectives from PR #1818 and issue #1817. It is 71 characters, within a reasonable length for a single-sentence title.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #1817 requires user turns to preserve typed backslashes and ordinary link syntax. The Prompt pipeline preserves newlines and limits most Markdown parsing, but the current PR description and ChatPipeline.Prompt comment identify two remaining violations: \*x\* and \_x\_ can still become emphasis, and [1]: https://… can still become a link definition. These inputs change the user's typed text.

Resolution

Update Prompt parsing so escaped * and _ remain literal and link-definition lines remain source text. Add regression tests for both cases. Keep intentional emphasis and bare-URL links working.

High-Level Assessment

The following are alternative approaches to this PR:

1. Dedicated literal-text formatter
  • ➕ Could guarantee that markdown definitions and delimiter quirks never alter typed text.
  • ➖ Would duplicate parsing and rendering behavior already supplied by Markdig and MarkView.

Recommendation: Keep the restricted Markdig pipeline: it reuses the existing renderer while isolating user turns from full markdown. Consider a dedicated formatter only if the documented emphasis-escape or link-definition quirks become unacceptable.

Action required

1. Escaped stars still become italics ✗ Dismissed
Description
The prompt pipeline still lets EmphasisInlineParser interpret escaped * and _ delimiters
instead of preserving the typed backslashes. When a user enters paired escaped emphasis markers such
as \*x\*, the prompt renderer formats the text as italics rather than displaying the original
characters.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/GitHubHtml/ChatPipeline.cs[R36-40]

+        builder.InlineParsers.Clear();
+ builder.InlineParsers.AddRange([
+            new EmphasisInlineParser(),
+            new CodeInlineParser(),
+ new LineBreakInlineParser { EnableSoftAsHard = true },
Relevance

●●● Strong

Explicitly acknowledged escaped emphasis remains broken, contradicting the prompt’s typed-content
requirement.

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The prompt pipeline explicitly enables the emphasis parser while the prompt contract requires
backslashes before punctuation to remain visible. The changed prompt documentation states that
backslashes are never escapes, but the known paired-escape case remains vulnerable to emphasis
parsing.

src/Capacitor.App/GitHubHtml/ChatPipeline.cs[36-40]

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
The prompt pipeline allows the emphasis parser to reinterpret escaped `*` and `_` characters, so typed punctuation can become italics instead of remaining visible.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/GitHubHtml/ChatPipeline.cs[36-40]
- test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/MarkdownViewTests.cs[549-563]

## Recommended Fix
Adjust the prompt inline-parser configuration or preprocessing so backslashes before punctuation remain visible and escaped emphasis markers cannot activate italics, then add coverage for paired inputs such as `\\*x\\*` and `\\_x\\_`.

ⓘ Copy this prompt and use it to remediate the issue with your preferred AI generation tools

2. Typed link definitions still become links ✗ Dismissed
Description
The prompt pipeline leaves ParagraphBlockParser able to interpret lines such as `[label]:
https://…` as link definitions. When a user types that syntax, the paragraph parser consumes it as
markdown instead of preserving the ordinary typed line, so unsupported link syntax is transformed or
removed from the displayed prompt.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/GitHubHtml/ChatPipeline.cs[R24-26]

+ /// Only the parsers named here run, so a parser a Markdig upgrade adds stays off. Markdig's own
+ /// order is kept: a paragraph, and plain text after every inline parser, take what nothing
+ /// earlier claimed. The paragraph parser still reads a `[label]: url` line as a definition.
Relevance

●●● Strong

Explicitly acknowledged parser quirk violates the prompt’s typed-text preservation contract.

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The changed prompt pipeline documentation explicitly acknowledges that the paragraph parser still
reads [label]: url as a definition, while the prompt compliance rule requires unsupported link
syntax not to transform ordinary typed text.

Support only intended formatting in user chat turns
src/Capacitor.App/GitHubHtml/ChatPipeline.cs[24-35]

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
Prompt paragraphs still interpret `[label]: url` as a reference-link definition, causing unsupported link syntax typed by users to be transformed instead of displayed literally.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/GitHubHtml/ChatPipeline.cs[28-35]
- test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/MarkdownViewTests.cs[544-572]

## Recommended Fix
Configure or replace the prompt paragraph parsing so link-definition lines remain literal text while bare URL autolinking continues to work, and add a regression test for `[1]: https://example.com`.

Remediation recommended

3. Multiline code adds an extra blank line ✓ Resolved
Description
BlankLines.Keep estimates a paragraph's last source line by counting only LineBreakInline
descendants, but a multiline CodeInline contains a newline without one of those nodes. For a
prompt such as ` x\ny\n\nz `, it starts inserting breaks from the paragraph's first line rather
than after the code span, adding a break before z.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/GitHubHtml/ChatPipeline.cs[R62-63]

+                    var lastLine = before.Line + into.Descendants<LineBreakInline>().Count();
+                    for (var line = lastLine; line < after.Line; line++) into.AppendChild(new LineBreakInline { IsHard = true });
Relevance

●●● Strong

Line counting ignores newlines inside CodeInline, causing deterministic extra spacing in multiline
prompts.

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The prompt pipeline enables code spans, but the new gap calculation counts only line-break inline
nodes. The repository's syntax dump and text extraction handle CodeInline.Content as one inline
value, so a newline within it is absent from that count.

src/Capacitor.App/GitHubHtml/ChatPipeline.cs[36-41]
src/Capacitor.App/GitHubHtml/ChatPipeline.cs[60-68]
test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/GitHubHtml/TreeDump.cs[38-45]
src/Capacitor.App/GitHubHtml/InlineText.cs[40-45]

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
Counting rendered line-break nodes miscalculates the source line occupied by a multiline code span and inserts too many breaks before the next paragraph.
## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/GitHubHtml/ChatPipeline.cs[60-68]
- test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/MarkdownViewTests.cs[574-593]
## Recommended Fix
Determine the previous paragraph's end line from its source span or source lines rather than its inline break count. Add a prompt-rendering regression test with a multiline inline code span followed by a blank line and another paragraph.

ⓘ Copy this prompt and use it to remediate the issue with your preferred AI generation tools

4. Blank lines disappear around code blocks ✗ Dismissed
Description
BlankLines.Keep inserts missing breaks only when two adjacent blocks are paragraphs. When a user
types several blank lines before a fenced code block, list, or quote—or at the start or end of a
turn—those lines reach the prompt renderer without any corresponding breaks, so different typed
spacing renders identically.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/GitHubHtml/ChatPipeline.cs[R60-61]

+ if (container[i - 1] is not ParagraphBlock { Inline: { } into } before
+                        || container[i] is not ParagraphBlock { Inline: { } from } after) continue;
Relevance

●●● Strong

BlankLines.Keep demonstrably handles only adjacent paragraphs, losing required spacing at other
block boundaries.

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The new loop skips every boundary that is not a pair of paragraphs and cannot visit a boundary
before the first or after the last block. User turns select this pipeline, while the local paragraph
and code-block styles specify zero margins; the added spacing test covers only a
paragraph-to-paragraph gap.

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
Prompt rendering restores blank lines only between adjacent paragraphs, dropping typed spacing around other blocks and at message boundaries.
## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/GitHubHtml/ChatPipeline.cs[55-69]
- test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/MarkdownViewTests.cs[574-593]
## Recommended Fix
Use source positions to preserve newline gaps across paragraph, code, list, and quote boundaries and at the beginning and end of a prompt. Add rendering tests that vary the number of blank lines at each boundary.

Markdig's list parser opens a thematic break itself, and a paragraph's source lines are released before the blank-line pass runs, so neither can be left to the parser allowlist

Joining from the end moved the inlines gathered so far again at every join, quadratic in the paragraph count of a long paste; the kept paragraph now takes over the joined one's last line
