Summary

Fixes #205. PHP class/interface/trait declarations preceded by attributes were registered under an attribute's name, making the real class unavailable to symbol lookup and impact analysis.

Changes

  • Read the declaration's name field instead of searching its descendants for a name node, matching the existing method-ownership logic.
  • Add regressions for attributed and unattributed declarations, declaration identifiers, method ownership, cross-file references, symbol lookup and impact.
  • Exercise rebuilding the persisted symbol graph in place using the existing in-memory Qdrant test harness. Stored graph formats, declaration ranges, public APIs, file-level import resolution and embedding formats remain unchanged. No new enum support.

The stale-graph regression seeds the old attribute-named symbol using the existing persistence APIs, verifies the stored graph is readable, then rebuilds and verifies lookup and impact under the real class name with the stale entry gone. This is mocked-storage evidence, not a live integration. The existing builtByVersion check triggers a graph rebuild on the first update after a release upgrade; no schema bump or embedding reindex is introduced here.

Attributed method/function naming remains outside this PR, following the maintainer's requested class/interface/trait scope.

Type of change

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change that fixes an issue)
  • New feature (non-breaking change that adds functionality)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to not work as expected)
  • Documentation update
  • Refactoring (no functional changes)
  • Test coverage improvement

Testing

  • Unit tests pass (npm run test:unit)
  • Integration tests pass (npm run test:integration) — if applicable
  • TypeScript compiles cleanly (npx tsc --noEmit)
  • New tests added for new/changed functionality

On Windows with Node 22.23.2, all 81 tests in the three changed suites pass. The full unit suite reports 2,569 passing, 23 failing and 14 skipped tests. The same 23 failing tests were reproduced with the baseline production file in the nine affected suites; the captured failing-test lists and assertion summaries are identical. The failures include Windows path/symlink assumptions and existing environment/configuration expectations. No tests were weakened or skipped as part of this change.

npm run lint, npx tsc --noEmit, npm run build and npm run check:release-versions pass. Docker integration and E2E were not run because the local Docker engine is unavailable. Persisted-pipeline tests use mocked in-memory Qdrant, not a live service.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • PHP classes, interfaces, and traits preceded by attributes are now identified by their declared names. This prevents attribute names from being mistaken for declaration names, keeps related methods associated with the correct declaration, and allows type references and impact results to resolve correctly.
    • Refreshed indexes replace stale attribute-based entries, restoring lookup by the correct declaration name.

📝 Walkthrough

PHP class-like declarations preceded by attributes now use their declared names in the symbol graph. Tests cover extraction, reference resolution, impact lookup, and refresh of a persisted graph.

Changes: PHP symbol extraction and lookup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Extract declared names
src/services/graph-symbols.ts, tests/unit/graph-symbols-php-qualifiers.test.ts
Class, interface, and trait extraction reads the declaration’s direct name. Tests check names, IDs, owners, and method ownership for attributed declarations, and verify that unattributed declarations retain their prior registration details.
Resolve attributed class references
tests/unit/code-graph-php-symbol-edges.test.ts
A graph test checks that an attributed Post class is registered under its declared name and that PostObserver’s Post reference resolves to it.
Verify persisted graph behavior
tests/unit/symbol-graph-contract.test.ts
Persisted-pipeline tests check symbol lookup and impact results for the attributed class. A refresh test seeds a stale graph and checks that it resolves Post after a version-triggered refresh, without generating embeddings.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 3ca66

Attributed PHP declarations should be found under their declared names, including after a graph refresh. No actionable issue remains before merge.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 3ca66

The change corrects PHP declaration names without adding external access or changing storage formats. Successful refresh is covered by regression tests, but recovery after storage failures is not established by those tests.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated effect is on symbol names, identifiers, references, and impact results for analyzed PHP projects. Corrected records flow through the existing project-scoped persistence path; no increased datastore authority is demonstrated.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The supplied public-entrypoint ranges are test doubles and test consumers of production APIs, not externally exposed entrypoints. Existing graph writes use project-identity writer locks and reclamation checks; the lock implementation explicitly limits coordination to one host.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The existing symbol writer attempts to delete an incomplete generation on staging failure and treats stale-generation cleanup failure as non-fatal after publication. These source-level controls do not establish live storage visibility or interruption guarantees.

Exercise the release-upgrade update path

runPipeline() calls rebuildGraph(tmpDir) directly. The test does not persist builtByVersion or graphInputs, so it bypasses shouldRebuildGraph and the incremental update entrypoint. The related tests cover the rebuild decision and mocked caller wiring, but not stale graph data flowing through a real first update after a release upgrade. A regression in that wiring could pass this test.

If this test is intended only to cover forced symbol-graph replacement, narrow its name and comments. If it is intended to cover the stated upgrade behavior, seed the actual graph-input record and invoke the incremental update entrypoint.

Please add the remaining upgrade-path regression before merge. runPipeline() calls rebuildGraph() directly, so it does not exercise the first incremental update.

Seed a persisted graph-input record with an older builtByVersion and unchanged file hashes, then call updateProjectIndex(). Assert that Post lookup/impact is restored, the stale ObservedBy symbol is removed, and no embedding regeneration occurs.

Keep the production fix and stored formats unchanged.

Added in 3ca6659.

The regression seeds the stale ObservedBy symbol graph and a persisted graph-input record with unchanged file hashes. It first verifies that the same-version record requires no rebuild, then changes only builtByVersion to an older version and calls the real updateProjectIndex(). It asserts restored Post lookup/impact, removal of the stale ObservedBy entry, the current version in the refreshed record, and zero calls to generateEmbeddings.

Production code and stored formats are unchanged. Storage and embedding services are mocked at their boundaries; the update, rebuild decision, graph rebuild and persistence paths run for real.

Local validation: 130 tests passed, 3 pre-existing skips across the five relevant suites; lint, TypeScript and build passed. The full local unit run retained the same 23 pre-existing Windows/environment failures (2,570 passed, 14 skipped). Remote CI for this new commit remains to be run.

The upgrade-path regression in 3ca6659 addresses the remaining request, including unchanged hashes, restored lookup/impact, stale-symbol removal and zero embedding regeneration. All 10 CI jobs passed, and the CodeRabbit review completed for this head with no actionable findings. No further corrections requested.
