feat(settings): share pins and device-independent settings across browsers - #854
Conversation
…wsers Settings and sidebar pins lived only in each browser's localStorage, so a PC and a phone disagreed. The server now keeps one shared document in preferences.json (GET/PUT /api/preferences) and announces each write as a preferences event on /api/machines/events. Every setting is marked shared or device in SETTING_SCOPE, checked at build time. A page applies what the server holds once the app is in and never writes on load; a change sends only the shared settings that changed (and the pins when they did), which the server lays over what it holds, so a setting nobody changed stays each device's own. Events at or below the last seen revision, or while a local change is unsent, are ignored. A watching device is refused writes and keeps receiving. 📝 Summary
Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to A watching browser can temporarily show its own settings instead of the latest shared values after a rejected save. The race is narrow and recoverable, but should be fixed or accepted before merge. Pre-merge checks |

Review findings (Codex, CodeRabbit) on the sync: - One path reads every document (the GET, an event, the answer to a save): a setting changed here and not yet sent stays and goes out next, a value this browser cannot read is left alone, the rest is taken. A document that arrives while a change is on its way is held and read after the answer, so a later write from elsewhere is never lost and an earlier one never undoes the change in flight. The baseline exists from the first render, so a change made before the first document arrives is kept and sent; a failed GET is retried. - The server sends its document when the event stream opens: a page that reconnects, or whose GET lost a race with an event, catches up. - Pins are absent from the document until a browser shares its own; a settings change no longer records an empty pin list that a reload would take. The browser that shares first carries its pins along, and the first pins a browser receives join its own, so none are lost in the move. After that the last write wins, as for settings. - Pins of panes gone from the server leave when the user next pins or unpins, not from an effect: a page that has not seen a pane yet (a PC still loading) must not delete everyone's pin of it. - The server keeps and announces a change only once it is on disk, a body announced over 64 KB is refused unread, and the document a change would make is held under the limit too (413). - A preferences event no longer invalidates the roster poll. Unit tests cover the reconcile rules; the browser regression adds the first-share pins, a write from elsewhere landing during an in-flight save, a later page taking the document, and a page whose GET fails catching up from the event stream. Apply read-only mode before settling a rejected save.
A watch browser can send a local setting or pin change before the server rejects its PUT with 403. If a newer preferences event arrives while that request is in flight, settled() clears inFlight.current before applying the held document. Because readOnly.current is still false, reconciliation preserves the local edit instead of applying the server values. The browser then becomes read-only, so it does not apply that event until another event arrives.
Set readOnly.current before settling a 403 response.

… under Unreleased main's devswha#854 classifies every setting as shared or device (SETTING_SCOPE, SHARED_SETTING_KEYS), and the build refuses an unclassified one. The logo colouring is an appearance choice like the theme, so it is shared. The merge had placed the changelog entry under 0.4.8. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
## Change On a PC where nearly every agent is Claude Code, the sidebar's leading column is a stripe of orange 18px tiles. Claude's mark is the only filled one (Codex, pi, Cursor and the rest already draw in the text color), so the tiles carry no information there, and they are louder than the waiting and finished states next to them. **Settings → Appearance → Agent logos: Color | Mono.** Color, today's look, stays the default. Mono: - draws Claude's asterisk in `currentColor`, without its tile; - greys out the other marks that have a brand fill (`filter: grayscale(1)`); - leaves the marks that already ride `currentColor` as they are. The cell's size, its place and the tooltip don't change. The setting is a `data-marks` attribute on `<html>` (as `lib/settings.ts` already does for other appearance settings), and the CSS is a new `AgentMark.css` keyed on it, so `AgentMark.tsx` only gains two class names on Claude's paths. Strings are added to ko, ja, zh and tr. Changelog: a line under Unreleased → Added. One question: #820's anonymous counts name the appearance settings changed from their defaults (`REPORTED_SETTINGS`). I left `agentMarks` out of that list, since adding it touches the telemetry worker and its schema. Happy to add it here or in a follow-up if you want it counted. ## Validation - `bun run check fast browser`: everything passes except `recent-folders-regression.ts`, which fails the same way on `main`. Under a local check with no evidence folder, `ci-browser-parallel.ts` sets `UI_EVIDENCE_DIR=""`, and the script's `process.env["UI_EVIDENCE_DIR"] ?? join(root, "evidence")` keeps the empty string, so `mkdirSync("")` throws `ENOENT` in its first second (`UI_EVIDENCE_DIR="" bun scripts/recent-folders-regression.ts` reproduces it on `main`). CI passes a real folder, so it doesn't hit this. A `||` there, as the other scripts test it, would fix it; I left it out of this PR. - `src/lib/settings.test.ts`: a new case — Color by default, `mono` kept, anything else falls back to Color. - `src/lib/i18n.test.ts`: the four new strings are in all four dictionaries. - I've used Mono on my own install for a few days, with ~40 workspaces nearly all running Claude Code. 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) Maintainer commits: b58d940 (agentMarks is a shared setting under #854; changelog under Unreleased), b1fd49a (Mono greys only the marks with brand colors). by @phirschybar Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
## Change Machines saved in herdr appear in the web UI without entering their SSH details again. Discovery does not open SSH: each machine first offers **Connect**. A successful connection enables reconnection for that destination, explicit port and herdr session. Installing, starting or updating a bridge requires separate approval; connecting to an already running bridge does not grant that permission. The roster follows renames, enabled state, removal and target changes. Retargeting revokes both approvals, drops cached panes and removes the generated local SSH key. A cleanup failure remains retryable across restart and does not prevent other machines from being disabled, retargeted or removed, or slow subsequent catalog polling. A cancelled key-generation job cannot publish credentials after retarget/removal. SSH masters and command clients suppress configured forwards. The bridge's explicit mux forward uses its existing control socket with `-F none`, so it keeps its own loopback tunnel without importing LocalForward, RemoteForward or DynamicForward entries. This is covered with real OpenSSH, including an SSH alias. Manual registrations retain their existing behavior. The CLI catalog stays authoritative; web-owned connection/install permissions and cached panes live separately. Existing HTTP/SSE contracts gain optional `herdr_profile_id` and the `connect` action; no endpoint is added. Rename, disable and remove inherited PCs in herdr. Review entry points: `server/herdr-profiles.ts`, `server/herdr-profile-state.ts`, `MachineManager.syncHerdrProfiles` and `watchHerdrProfiles` in `server/machines.ts`, and `server/ssh.ts`. ## Validation - Revision `6552d6d`: Fast checks passed (workflow syntax, generated types, TypeScript, build, **2,483 unit tests passed**, eight skipped). The **entire browser lane passed**, all 26 steps, including the profile desktop/phone regression. The source and built artifact were unchanged through the run. - Integration: **392 tests passed, zero failed, across 34 files**. `CHECK_DIR=/tmp/h606-clean-shell SHELL=/tmp/herdr-606-bash HERDR_WEB_HERDR_BIN=/tmp/herdr-review-bin/herdr bun run check integration` passed on an isolated copy of the same `main` commit, with its own build output. The report verifies unchanged source and exit 0. The disposable shell wrapper runs `/bin/bash --noprofile --norc`. - Final profile-sync regression run: 21 passed, including repeated cleanup failure across polls, direct update before Connect, preserved connection errors and late key generation. - Desktop/phone profile browser regression passed after the final UI changes; screenshots below use an isolated test session. The check runs in the standard browser lane. - Real Docker SSH lifecycle passed again on `6552d6d` against the official remote-v25 Linux x64 bundle, verified against SHA-256 `c770267f98bfff27669bbbc9a65c1ce56c4f772ef9eda628bbb65eba4d686a94`. Covers real CLI catalog parsing, SSH alias/config forwards, explicit first connection, fingerprint/password/install approval, dedicated-key authentication, terminal input/resize, manager/bridge restart, connection-only consent, disable/re-enable, named-session retarget and removal. Only disposable container state was changed. - Opus independently reviewed a self-contained source bundle. Its polling-backoff, direct-update and error-preservation findings are addressed with regression tests. - `git diff origin/main...HEAD --check` passed. The initial full run had one existing terminal assertion fail and stopped the browser lane at `Cannot fast-forward to the past`. The final full run's browser lane passed; its integration lane repeated the terminal failure. This laptop's `.bashrc` replaces interactive Bash with zsh, whose cursor-positioned updates do not contain the assertion's contiguous `size=27x91`. A disposable Bash wrapper using `--noprofile --norc` resolves it: all 108 API tests and all 392 integration tests pass without changing the assertion or product code. These initial failures remain disclosed rather than counted as successful full runs. Upstream CI and Remote PC bundles runs on this head currently require maintainer approval. Approval is requested in the PR discussion. CodeRabbit completed a fresh full review of `6552d6d` with **no actionable comments**, no retained architecture concerns, and zero unresolved review threads. Its generic docstring-coverage warning is advisory; the repository does not require an 80% threshold. The initial review attempt was skipped because GitHub retained the old base SHA; refreshing the existing `main` base corrected the comparison to 28 changed files. ### Screenshots The fixture uses a closed loopback SSH port and a synthetic installation-approval response; real SSH is exercised separately in Docker. <img alt="Separate installation approval on a phone" width="390" src="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/sobir-git/herdr-web-ui/6552d6d/docs/screenshots/machine-inheritance/phone-approval.png"> ### Compatibility and rollback Old/missing catalog commands leave manual setup available, and read failures retain the last roster. Remote bridge instances do not discover another catalog. Reverting removes inherited rows without stopping remote herdr sessions or modifying manual registrations. Remote authorized-key entries remain for explicit cleanup. Maintainer commits (merge session, 2026-10-12): main merged through v0.4.8, #854, #850 and #691; bfe9d09 lets an inherited PC connect whatever its catalog label's length (the catalog names it, the dialog sends no name); the browser lane count is 40. by @sobir-git Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Why
From 0.4.7 mobile testing: a star pinned on the PC did not show on the phone, and settings changed on one device did not reach the other — both lived only in each browser's
