Thanks for this, and for the SSH fixture and the browser QA script. I read the full diff at 914f730 (there was no earlier maintainer review of this PR), merged it locally onto main at v0.4.2 (b82584d), and ran the checks below there. This is a comment, not a request for changes.
Merge state
- It conflicts with v0.4.2 in
CHANGELOG.mdonly. v0.4.2 was cut after this branch, so the entry has to go under## [Unreleased], above the new## [0.4.2]section. Everything else merges automatically. - "Fast checks" and "Integration and browser" have not run on this head. Only CodeRabbit ran.
What it does without the user asking
The rule this needs most is what happens on a PC whose owner never opens anything in the web UI, so I traced that first:
- At server start, and then every 5 s for as long as the server runs, it spawns
herdr machine list --json(server/index.ts:2378,server/machines.ts:139-156,server/herdr-profiles.ts:53). A failed read backs off to 5 minutes. On herdr 0.9.3 the command exists and answers[]on a PC without saved machines, so on such a PC it is one short process every 5 s and nothing else. - For every enabled saved machine with a supported address,
syncHerdrProfilescallsreconnectat once (server/machines.ts:196). That opens an SSH master with the server account's~/.ssh/config, keys and ssh-agent, runs the remote inspection (platform, home, herdr path and version, socket, a running bridge's descriptor), and connects to a compatible bridge if one runs. Before this PR the web UI opened SSH only to PCs added in its own Add PC dialog. - It does not install a bundle, generate or register a key, or start a bridge or daemon on its own. Without a recorded approval,
preparestops with "needs a web bridge" (server/machines.ts:548), and auto-updates are gated the same way (mayManageBridge,server/machines.ts:209). The test "a discovered PC with a preinstalled runtime still requires approval before starting a missing bridge" covers this, and I agree with it from the code. - It imports only
id,label, enabled, targetandsession. An unknown field (a password, say) is dropped, and the identity file cannot be overridden from the web UI for an inherited row. Unsupported addresses (option-like,$(), newlines, credentials or paths in anssh://URI) show as an error row and never connect. The parser tests cover these. - On disk it writes
herdr-profile-state.json(temp file, chmod 0600, rename, directory0700), the SSH control and askpass files it already wrote for manual PCs, and the cached snapshot of a connected PC. Removing or retargeting a profile deletes the generated local key; the remoteauthorized_keysline is left, as the docs say.
For the owner: point 2 makes the web server SSH into every machine saved in herdr as soon as it starts. That is the point of the feature, but the user is never asked whether the web UI should do it. An opt-in, such as a Settings → Remote PCs switch or a first-run prompt listing the machines found, would keep today's behaviour for anyone who does not want it.
Mutating requests
- No new endpoint.
PATCHandDELETEon an inherited row answer 400 "in herdr" (server/machines.tspatch/remove, asserted inserver/herdr-profiles.contract.test.ts). - Setup for an inherited row goes through the existing
POST /api/machines/setup. Its same-origin check andx-herdr-machine: 1header are unchanged, and the server replaces the request's address with the saved one (setup, theherdr_profile_idbranch). MachineDialogstarts the setup job as soon as it opens for an inherited PC (src/components/MachineDialog.tsx:59-63). It opens only from the user's Set up web access, and an install still waits for Approve, so this is consistent with the rules. Opening the dialog does start an SSH connection without a second press, though.- A remote bridge (
machines: false) never reads a catalog. There is a contract test for this.
Findings
Medium. SSH forwards from ~/.ssh/config now open without a user action (server/ssh.ts:95). The master is started with the account's config and without -o ClearAllForwardings=yes, so a LocalForward, RemoteForward or DynamicForward set for that alias in ~/.ssh/config opens along with it. I checked what OpenSSH resolves for the same arguments (-M -N -T -o ControlPersist=no -o ExitOnForwardFailure=yes) with ssh -G on a config holding RemoteForward 0.0.0.0:18080 127.0.0.1:8080 and a LocalForward. It reports clearallforwardings no and keeps both forwards. A manually added PC has the same behaviour on main today. What this PR changes is that it now happens at server start for every saved herdr machine, and with ExitOnForwardFailure=yes a forward whose port is taken also fails the connection. Fix: add -o ClearAllForwardings=yes to the master's arguments only, not to base(). The option also clears forwards given on the command line, and the app's own forward (server/ssh.ts:148, -O forward -L ...) is built from base(). I did not test that -O forward through a master started with the option still works. It should, since the option applies when the master starts and the mux request comes later, but it needs a run with the SSH fixture. This is a pre-existing gap that the PR makes automatic, not a new hole.
Low. A key generated during a retarget or removal can be left behind (server/machines.ts:517). ssh-keygen is spawned and awaited inside the setup job, and it is not tracked by cancelJob. If the profile is removed or retargeted while it runs, removeKey finds no file yet (ENOENT counts as clean), and then ssh-keygen writes the pair. The job fails afterwards on the closed SSH connection, but the private key stays in the state directory's ssh/ folder (0600, inside 0700). A later setup for the same profile ID reuses it, since existsSync(path) skips generation. The window is the few milliseconds ssh-keygen runs. I traced this in the code and did not reproduce it.
What I ran
On the merged tree (b82584d + 914f730, CHANGELOG.md resolved by hand with the entry under ## [Unreleased]):
bun run check fast: workflow lint, generated types, typecheck and build pass; unit suite 1950 pass, 6 skip, 0 fail across 146 files.bun run check run bun test ./server/herdr-profiles.contract.test.ts: 2 pass, 0 fail.bun run check run bun scripts/herdr-profiles-browser-qa.ts: desktop and phone both PASS (automatic row, inherited controls, no address entry, approval, rename, disable and removal).bun run check run bun scripts/machine-dialog-regression.ts(the dialog this PR changes): 1280px and 390px both PASS.herdr machine list --jsonon herdr 0.9.3: answers[]here, so the parser's field names (id,label, target, session, enabled) are checked only through the PR's own fixture, not against a real saved machine.- Not run:
scripts/herdr-profiles-ssh-qa.ts(it needs a Docker host and a verified Linux bundle). - An adversarial review pass with another agent (Codex) over the diff. Its two findings are the Medium and the first Low above. I confirmed the Medium with
ssh -Gand rated its second Medium as Low after tracing the window.
For the owner to decide
- Whether inheriting saved herdr machines should be automatic (as here) or opt-in. With the Medium above fixed, automatic is safe in what it does, but it is still an SSH connection the user did not ask the web UI to make.
- Whether to take the
ClearAllForwardingsfix in this PR or separately; it also applies to manually added PCs. - Any
server/change here reaches a remote PC only through the remote bundle. This PR's discovery runs on the local server only, so no bundle bump is needed for it.

A key removal that failed left the old binding in place, so a profile that went back to that target, or was removed and added again with it, read as unchanged and the key was never removed. The pending removal is now saved with the binding and retried on the next reconcile, also after a restart. A PC saved in herdr that has not connected yet is refused a direct bridge update. The sidebar's Update bridge button now opens that PC's dialog instead of repeating the refusal. The polling test asserts the delays the watch schedules rather than elapsed time, which also failed on a busy worker.
main gained a Turkish dictionary (devswha#815) after this branch was synced. The strings this change adds and renames get their Turkish entries here, so the dictionary check passes on the merged tree.
main added a browser script (devswha#824) and raised the lane's expected count to 34, the same number this branch already used for its own script, so the two edits merged without a conflict and left the count one short. It is 35 now.

… spots main added another browser script (devswha#816), so the lane count is 36. This change's entries sat where every other change adds its own: the top of the three dictionaries and the end of the changelog lists. Each new commit on main therefore conflicted. The dictionary entries now sit with the other machine strings, and the changelog entries one place up from the end.
## Change Release 0.4.7, from main at 80ca9bb (47 PRs since v0.4.6). - `package.json` and `herdr-plugin.toml`: 0.4.7. - CHANGELOG: `[Unreleased]` becomes `[0.4.7] - 2026-10-12`, with the compare links. - #513's entry moves out of the 0.4.0 section, where its branch's merge left it, and gets its credit; it says the pace is a setting, off by default (#834). - A Maintenance section covers the PRs that had no entry: #743, #756, #767, #795, #805, #810, #813, #821, #826, #831. - The note under the Hermes entry that asked for a runtime bump at release now says what a remote PC needs. - `release-summaries.json`: 0.4.7 in en/ko/ja/zh/tr (6 new, 6 improved, 5 fixed). The Turkish lines are not checked by a native speaker. - `REMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSION` 25 -> 26. Since v0.4.5's runtime the bridge gained Hermes transcripts (#604), conversation pushes (#689) and Grok/Antigravity activity (#816), so `remote-v26` is published before the app release. Not in this release: #606. ## Validation - `bun scripts/release-notes.ts 0.4.7` renders the summaries and the full changelog (235 lines). - `bun run typecheck` and `bun run build`: pass. - `TMPDIR=/tmp bun run test:unit`: one failure, `server/voice.test.ts` ("audio.webm" vs "clip.webm"), which fails the same way on unmodified `main` on this Mac (Bun 1.4.0); CI runs Bun 1.4.2. - Every PR merged since v0.4.6 was checked against the changelog section: all 47 are linked. ## Release After this merges and its CI on `main` passes: push `remote-v26`, wait for its release, then run the Release workflow with `0.4.7`.
main added three browser scripts, so the lane count is 39. v0.4.7 and v0.4.8 were cut after this branch. Git merged the two changelog entries without a conflict, but into the released 0.4.7 section; they now sit under Unreleased.
…s dialog A saved herdr machine approved only for connection could take Update bridge from the sidebar or the app-wide line: the update ran as an automatic job, without the approval step, and its success recorded the separate bridge approval, so later updates and bridge starts went unattended. The server now refuses that direct update, and the existing fallback opens the machine's dialog, where the update waits for Approve.
…wser lanes are 40
…s catalog label Review finding (Codex): the catalog accepts a label of any length, the dialog sent it as the PC name, and setup refused a name over 100 characters, so such a PC could never connect from the web UI. The dialog no longer sends a name for an inherited PC, and the server does not read one for it: the catalog names it. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>

… notice end to end Review follow-ups on devswha#698 (Codex astra medium, 2026-10-12): - `isLoopbackBind` replaces the three-string list: `127.0.0.2`, `[::1]`, `LOCALHOST`, `::ffff:127.0.0.1` and `*.localhost` are loopback too, so neither the UI notice nor the startup warning cries wolf there. The startup warning in server/index.ts shares the predicate. Tests cover both sides, including `::`, `[::]`, a LAN and a tailnet address. - The health contract test now proves the authenticated-only guard with a request that is refused (Funnel) on the exposed, tokenless server, and that pairing one device takes the field away. Each case runs on its own state dir. - The browser regression waits for the health answer and the live session before looking, so the loopback case cannot pass on a page that never asked; the background is compared with the resolved `--danger-tint` instead of "not null"; the notice's button is clicked and must open Settings on Phone & devices. - Browser lane count 41 after devswha#606 landed on main. - ko/ja/zh/tr strings use each dictionary's fixed terms (패널/페어링/접속 토큰, ペイン/デバイス, 窗格/访问 Token, erişim anahtarı). - Trailing newlines on the new files. Change
Machines saved in herdr appear in the web UI without entering their SSH details again. Discovery does not open SSH: each machine first offers Connect. A successful connection enables reconnection for that destination, explicit port and herdr session. Installing, starting or updating a bridge requires separate approval; connecting to an already running bridge does not grant that permission.
The roster follows renames, enabled state, removal and target changes. Retargeting revokes both approvals, drops cached panes and removes the generated local SSH key. A cleanup failure remains retryable across restart and does not prevent other machines from being disabled, retargeted or removed, or slow subsequent catalog polling. A cancelled key-generation job cannot publish credentials after retarget/removal.
SSH masters and command clients suppress configured forwards. The bridge's explicit mux forward uses its existing control socket with
-F none, so it keeps its own loopback tunnel without importing LocalForward, RemoteForward or DynamicForward entries. This is covered with real OpenSSH, including an SSH alias.Manual registrations retain their existing behavior. The CLI catalog stays authoritative; web-owned connection/install permissions and cached panes live separately. Existing HTTP/SSE contracts gain optional
herdr_profile_idand theconnectaction; no endpoint is added. Rename, disable and remove inherited PCs in herdr.Review entry points:

The fixture uses a closed loopback SSH port and a synthetic installation-approval response; real SSH is exercised separately in Docker.
Compatibility and rollback
Old/missing catalog commands leave manual setup available, and read failures retain the last roster. Remote bridge instances do not discover another catalog. Reverting removes inherited rows without stopping remote herdr sessions or modifying manual registrations. Remote authorized-key entries remain for explicit cleanup.
