Change

Three chat-send fixes for Claude panes reported against v0.4.6.

  • Send now steers a working Claude turn (Send now on a working Claude pane only queues the message in Claude Code (Enter vs Ctrl+Enter) #737). dispatchPendingText committed every pending message with Enter, and Claude Code queues what Enter commits during a turn. When Send now steers a working Claude pane (!automatic && beforeEnter.working), the committing key is now ctrl+enter, which Claude Code takes as "send now". herdr encodes that key as the pane asked: ESC[27;5;13~ under modifyOtherKeys (what Claude Code asks for), ESC[13;5u under the kitty protocol, and a plain CR for a program that asked for neither (measured on herdr 0.9.3). Automatic next-turn delivery, an idle agent and every other agent keep Enter.
  • The pending paste and its key carry the write-time guard (server: queued chat delivery (paste and Enter) skips #624's write-time authority check #666). Both RPCs now pass the lease-aware guard (authorizePending as a predicate) that fix(terminal): recheck the sender's right to type right before herdr is written to #624 gave the other input paths, so a sender that detaches, switches roles, disconnects or is revoked while herdr's connect is awaited writes nothing. A guard that refuses the paste leaves the message unsent (held, with the lease's own error code). One that refuses the key after the paste leaves it uncertain (submit_changed), as before.
  • A send stopped before Claude answers goes back to the composer. This carries fix(chat): a send stopped before Claude answers goes back to the composer #741 by @Haeminway1 (commit authored by them), rebased on main with conflicts resolved. See that PR for the full description. On top of it, two fixes from its review:
    • GET /api/pane/prompt took the viewport's ANSI read as both the box and its colors, so a pane scrolled to an older box holding the chat's last message answered it as restored, filling the composer and hiding the turn (CodeRabbit). The route now checks the read it already makes, then reads the live screen's box and takes the viewport's colors only where viewportShowsLive verifies them, as the send paths do.
    • The two Esc presses that empty Claude's restored copy now ask the sender's right before each press and pass it to herdr as a guard (CodeRabbit security review).

Fixes #666
Carries #741

Verification

Integration and contract tests ran on an isolated herdr session (HERDR_TEST_SESSION=herdr-web-ui-test-l2).

Not verified live against a real Claude Code: the key choice follows the issue's own live reproduction (Claude Code 2.1.294), and the bytes herdr sends were measured above.

…rites

Send now on a working Claude pane commits with ctrl+enter, which Claude Code
takes as send-now instead of queueing (#737). herdr encodes it as the pane
asked, and as a plain CR for a program that asked for nothing.

The pending paste and its committing key pass the lease-aware guard to herdr,
as the other input paths do since #624: a refusal before the paste leaves the
message unsent (held), one before the key leaves it uncertain (#666).
…oser

Stopping a chat message right after sending, before Claude Code answers,
makes Claude Code take the turn back and put the text in its own input
box. The chat kept showing the message as sent with an empty composer,
and the next send was refused with input_draft because the box was not
empty, while the terminal could simply edit and resend.

- server: noteSubmitted keeps the chat's last message per pane;
claudeRestoredDraft recognises exactly that text typed back in Claude's
box. freeClaudeBox (both send paths) empties that copy with two Esc
presses while the agent is not working, re-reads the box and sends; any
other draft, bash mode, clipped box or unverified colors still refuse.
- GET /api/pane/prompt answers `restored` from the same ANSI read; the
composer takes it back without focus, clears only an untouched fill, and
the chat does not render that trailing turn.
- transcript: Claude writes the re-send as a sibling of the cancelled
prompt (same parentUuid, no assistant between); parseClaudeTranscript
drops the cancelled one, and turnStarts does not open a turn at the
re-send so the incremental page reads both together.

…Esc presses

Review of #741: GET /api/pane/prompt took the viewport's ANSI read as both the
box and its colors, so a pane scrolled to an older box holding the chat's last
message answered it as restored. It now reads the live screen's box and takes
the viewport's colors only where viewportShowsLive verifies them, after a cheap
check on the read it already made.

The two Esc presses that empty Claude's restored copy ask the sender's right
before each press and pass it to herdr as a guard, as the paste and key do.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Cancelled Claude Code messages can be restored to the composer and resent in the same conversation.
    • Restored messages are not displayed as sent chat turns. Before resending, Claude Code clears the matching restored copy.
    • Restored text fills only an empty composer; existing drafts and edits are preserved.
    • Send now delivers immediately during an active turn.
    • If permission to send is lost before a message is pasted, it remains unsent. If permission is lost after pasting, the message is flagged for terminal verification.

Walkthrough

The change detects Claude messages restored in the terminal, reports them to the chat UI, and fills an eligible empty composer. Submission clears an exact restored copy. Transcript parsing and rendering omit a cancelled prompt when its unanswered same-parent resend arrives.

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to e5612

The change restores Claude chat sends after a cancelled message and guards pending delivery against lease changes. No actionable merge-blocking risk is evident from the reviewed context. Live verification against Claude Code was not reported by the author.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟠 High · up to 46132

Restoring stopped messages introduces expensive processing that can make the shared service unresponsive beyond the affected session. Access controls and stronger write-time permission checks narrow the exposure, but do not contain this availability risk.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · observed: The new restored-message matcher exposes a verified synchronous backtracking condition through shared request and send-preparation paths. Adversarial pane rows and submitted text can make a per-pane operation consume shared execution time, defeating failure containment between panes.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated architecture scope is shared-service availability: an expensive match can delay requests and input scheduling for other panes in the same server process. Preparing adversarial submitted text requires a write-capable path or equivalent pane influence; subsequent prompt reads are available to callers granted normal service access, including watchers, and to bridge-authorized callers. No new credential authority, tenant boundary crossing, or independent remote-server compromise was established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The retained security finding concerns rows joined with optional whitespace terms and tested synchronously against prior submitted text. Ambiguous separators, including adjacent terms from empty rows, can cause expensive backtracking on a mismatch. This PR introduces the matcher and its callers; the condition is not merely unchanged code receiving the same exposure. The supplied verification reports a successful proof of concept, while exact deployed pane dimensions and worst-case duration remain unconfirmed.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The existing access wrapper remains in place; watch-role mutation restrictions do not exclude the prompt GET. Detection rejects blank provenance, clipped or non-input boxes, and paste/image placeholders, and escapes regex metacharacters. Live-screen checks protect restoration identity, but the first synchronous match occurs before those checks. Read timeouts and exception-to-null handling do not interrupt CPU-bound regex evaluation.
  • observed — Pending paste and commit now recheck the captured lease immediately before the RPC write, after connection establishment. The lease checks revocation, role, connection, attachment, and authority generation. Both restored-copy Esc operations also carry write-time authorization guards; only a matching non-working draft is eligible for clearing, followed by another box read.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Pending submissions have a 20,000-character bound, queue limits, and explicit uncertain-state recovery. Immediate submissions do not use that validator, and the restored matcher has no explicit row or work bound in the inspected code. Consequently, queue safety and read deadlines do not provide a common resource-containment guarantee for restored-message processing.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Replace backtracking-based wrap recognition with a deterministically bounded matcher, and define explicit input-size and row limits shared by submission and restoration paths. Request throttling could add containment, but should not substitute for bounding the cost of one match.

…s in its regression

Review of #760: claudeRestoredDraft dropped every space before comparing, so an
edit in the terminal that only took out or put in a space still matched and
the two Esc presses erased it. Each row's own spaces now count; only a wrap
joins rows, with nothing (a split word) or one space or line break between.

The browser regression waited fixed times before its negative assertions; it
now waits for the next serial prompt or conversation read to have landed.

…y with time to send

Review of #760:
- claudeRestoredDraft built a regex joining the box's rows with \s?, which
backtracks exponentially over a box of blank rows against a near miss
(1.3 s at 30 rows here). It now walks the rows over the set of places the
sent text can be at, with the same matching rules.
- freeClaudeBox could press its two Esc with too little of the send's deadline
left, erase Claude's restored copy, then time out without sending. A send
with less than RESTORED_CLEAR_RESERVE_MS (2 s) left now clears nothing and
answers submit_timeout; both send paths pass their deadline.
