Change

Stopping a chat message right after sending it, before Claude Code answers, left the chat stuck. Claude Code takes such a turn back and puts the text back in its own input box, so the terminal can edit and resend it. The chat kept showing the message as sent, left the composer empty, and refused the next send with input_draft ("Claude Code's input box in the terminal is not empty"), because the box now held the chat's own message.

Reproduced on Claude Code 2.1.296 with herdr 0.9.3: send from the chat, press Stop before any reply, then send again.

  • Server: noteSubmitted now keeps the chat's last message per pane (lastChatSubmitted). claudeRestoredDraft recognizes that exact text as typed text back in Claude's box: whitespace-insensitive, since the terminal wraps it, and only with verified colors. Both send paths go through freeClaudeBox. While the agent is not working, it empties that copy with two Esc presses, reads the box again, and only then sends. Any other draft is refused with input_draft as before: text typed or changed in the terminal, bash mode, a clipped box, a placeholder, or a box without verified colors (chat: a queued message is pasted over a draft already in the agent's input #609, fix(chat): refuse immediate sends over Claude input drafts #677). Ctrl+C is never used, because it would arm "press Ctrl-C again to exit".
  • GET /api/pane/prompt answers restored from the ANSI read it already makes for suggestion, and older servers omit it. The composer takes the text back without focus, so a phone's keyboard stays down. It clears only a fill the user has not touched and never replaces text the user typed. While the text is restored, the chat does not draw that trailing user turn, which matches the terminal.
  • Transcript: Claude Code writes the re-send as a sibling of the cancelled prompt: the same parentUuid, with no assistant entry between them. parseClaudeTranscript drops the cancelled prompt. turnStarts does not open a turn at such a re-send, so the incremental newest-page read (settled/live) parses both together. Without this, the cancelled message showed up again beside the sent one after the resend.
  • shared/protocol.ts, server/AGENTS.md and CHANGELOG.md are updated.

Related: #728 offers to clear an arbitrary terminal draft after the user confirms. This PR covers only the chat's own cancelled message, needs no confirmation, and works on several rows. The two complement each other. They touch the same check in server/index.ts, so whichever lands second needs a small rebase.

Validation

  • Unit: server/prompt.test.ts covers claudeRestoredDraft (exact match, wrapped rows, an edit, grey text, unverified colors, a placeholder, nothing sent). server/conversation.test.ts covers the sibling rule on a cold parse and through transcriptPage's warm settled/live reads. src/lib/compose.test.ts covers sameMessage.
  • Contract (server/submit.contract.test.ts): the chat's own restored copy gets Esc, Esc, then agent.prompt. A copy edited in the terminal is still refused, and no key is sent. api.contract.test.ts checks the new restored: null field.
  • Browser: scripts/restored-draft-demo-regression.ts is added to ci-browser.sh. It checks the fill without focus, the hidden trailing turn, an untouched fill clearing, and an edited fill or the user's own words staying. It fails on main (no fill) and passes here.
  • Gates on this branch: typecheck passes. test:integration gave 362 pass and 0 fail. test:ui and ci-browser.sh passed all 23 scripts. test:unit passes except voice transcribe > streams deltas…, which fails the same way on main in the full lane and passes when run alone.
  • Live run, Claude Code (Haiku) in an owned herdr workspace driven by a headless browser, before and after the fix:
    • Before: the resend was refused with input_draft.
    • After, three rounds of stop → edit → resend: the composer refills about 2 s after Stop, the resend goes through, the terminal box ends empty, and the native session id stays the same. Nothing is left working.
    • Also checked: a stop after the reply has started restores nothing and the next send works; a terminal edit of the restored text keeps the refusal and the draft; switching to another pane and back keeps the restored text; a reload starts clean.

Before: the resend is refused

before

After Stop: the message is back in the composer, and no sent turn is drawn for it

after cancel

After the edited resend: one turn, same conversation

after resend

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

…oser

Stopping a chat message right after sending, before Claude Code answers,
makes Claude Code take the turn back and put the text in its own input
box. The chat kept showing the message as sent with an empty composer,
and the next send was refused with input_draft because the box was not
empty, while the terminal could simply edit and resend.

- server: noteSubmitted keeps the chat's last message per pane;
claudeRestoredDraft recognises exactly that text typed back in Claude's
box. freeClaudeBox (both send paths) empties that copy with two Esc
presses while the agent is not working, re-reads the box and sends; any
other draft, bash mode, clipped box or unverified colors still refuse.
- GET /api/pane/prompt answers `restored` from the same ANSI read; the
composer takes it back without focus, clears only an untouched fill, and
the chat does not render that trailing turn.
- transcript: Claude writes the re-send as a sibling of the cancelled
prompt (same parentUuid, no assistant between); parseClaudeTranscript
drops the cancelled one, and turnStarts does not open a turn at the
re-send so the incremental page reads both together.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • When a Claude Code send is cancelled, its message is returned to the composer for editing and resending without starting a new conversation.
    • The matching cancelled message is hidden from the transcript to avoid showing it twice.
    • Restored text won’t overwrite an existing draft or your edits. Sending again clears Claude Code’s matching restored copy before submitting; unrelated or edited input is preserved.

Walkthrough

The change returns a verified cancelled Claude Code message to the composer and allows it to be resent without starting a new conversation. It removes the matching unanswered turn from the transcript and preserves existing drafts and user edits.

Changes

Claude Send Recovery

Layer / File(s) Summary
Restored-draft signal
server/prompt.ts, shared/protocol.ts, src/lib/api.ts, server/prompt.test.ts, server/api.contract.test.ts
The server tracks each pane’s last submitted text and returns restored only when the Claude input matches it. The client reads the optional field, and tests cover its recognition and response contracts.
Safe Claude resubmission
server/index.ts, server/submit.contract.test.ts, server/AGENTS.md
When Claude is idle and its input matches the last submitted message, both submit paths clear it with two Escape presses before sending. Other non-empty drafts remain rejected.
Same-parent transcript reconciliation
server/conversation.ts, server/conversation.test.ts
Claude transcript parsing and live paging omit an unanswered prompt when a later prompt has the same parent. Tests cover answered prompts, different parents, string and structured content, and live transcript updates.
Composer and transcript restoration
src/components/ChatView.tsx, src/components/Composer.tsx, src/components/PaneTerminal.tsx, src/lib/compose.ts, src/lib/compose.test.ts, scripts/restored-draft-demo-regression.ts, scripts/ci-browser.sh, scripts/ci-browser.test.ts, CHANGELOG.md
The UI fills an empty composer without focusing it, clears only an untouched restored fill, and hides the matching final user turn. The browser regression checks these behaviors and the changelog describes the change.

In a scrolled Claude pane, the chat may fill the composer with text the live terminal does not hold, and hide the last message, until the user scrolls back. Sending remains protected. The changelog entry also needs its PR link before merge.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 64f13

Cancellation recovery now clears terminal input and changes how returned messages are shown. Existing checks limit the scope, but concurrent changes can outlive the initial validation, and older terminal views can be mistaken for current recovery state.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new destructive recovery sequence validates the restored draft and working state once, then sends two unconditional Esc operations across timed waits. Caller authority and pending target identity are checked outside this helper, not before each Esc. Server serialization does not coordinate independent terminal input. Consequently, an edit, target change, or authority loss after validation can leave recovery acting on state it no longer owns; the final reread can detect remaining content but cannot undo an earlier clearing operation. The base rejected this nonempty-draft state rather than mutating it.
  • Low · reliability · inferred: The new prompt response derives restored state from a visible ANSI read and passes that same read as both text and colors, without establishing that it represents the live screen. A historical typed box matching the recorded submission can therefore be classified as restored. This classification fills the composer and can hide the trailing user turn, promoting a historical observation into current recovery state. The send path's stronger live-screen verification prevents this response alone from authorizing Esc clearing, but does not protect the recovery display.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified transition concern affects terminal input in a targeted Claude pane within an existing writable caller's access scope. It does not establish new unauthenticated reachability or greater downstream agent privileges. The new restored response is pane-scoped under the existing server access gate; its confidentiality exposure relative to all other pane-reading endpoints was not fully compared.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A writable caller can initiate recovery on a matching terminal draft. If authority, target identity, or independently entered terminal content changes after the initial validation, the helper still issues its remaining Esc operation before outer checks resume. This is a newly introduced terminal-mutation window; successful exploitation and downstream command execution were not demonstrated.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Pending delivery retains attachment and lease authorization, terminal and agent-session identity comparison, live-screen menu and masked-input checks, and a second context check before Enter. These controls contain later delivery but do not guard each earlier recovery Esc operation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Submission bookkeeping advances after successful agent submission or Enter completion. Pending uncertainty after paste becomes submit_changed. Recovery Esc effects occur before the pending wrote flag, so the existing post-paste uncertainty classification does not account for those earlier mutations.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Bind recovery to the terminal and agent-session identity plus a current draft version or equivalent provider-side condition. Revalidate caller authority before each destructive operation, and account for partial clearing in recovery outcomes.
  • proposed — Use the same verified live-screen provenance for the restored API response as for submission recovery; treat a historical or unverifiable viewport as unknown rather than current restored state.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

The restored read uses colors that were never verified to show the live screen.

claudeRestoredDraft receives the ANSI visible read twice: once as its live argument, after the escape codes are stripped, and once as colors. That read is the viewport, not the detection read of the live screen. claudeInputDraft relies on its caller to verify that the colors match the live screen, and freeClaudeBox does this through viewportShowsLive. This route skips that check.

Failing scenario:

  1. A Claude pane is scrolled up in herdr.
  2. The viewport shows an older input box that holds the last chat message as typed text.
  3. The route returns that text as restored.
  4. The composer fills with text that the live box does not hold, and the chat hides the last user turn.

The server send path refuses this case safely. The UI state is still wrong until the user scrolls the pane back.

Fix: read detection text as live, and pass the ANSI read as colors only when viewportShowsLive holds. Alternatively, reuse the claudeBoxReads logic.

Thank you for this fix, @Haeminway1, and for the careful write-up and browser regression.

It has been carried into #760 together with two other chat-send fixes (#737, #666), with your commit kept as yours and rebased onto current main (only CHANGELOG.md and the browser-lane count in scripts/ci-browser.test.ts conflicted). On top of it, #760 addresses the two review points raised here: the restored answer of GET /api/pane/prompt is now read from the live screen's box, with the viewport's colors used only when viewportShowsLive verifies them, so a pane scrolled to an older box no longer fills the composer; and the two Esc presses ask the sender's right before each press and pass it to herdr as a guard. Your tests and scripts/restored-draft-demo-regression.ts are kept as they are, apart from one assertion that now also expects that guard argument.

The changelog credits you with a link to this PR. This PR is left open for the maintainer to decide on.

…e a stopped send (#760)

## Change

Three chat-send fixes for Claude panes reported against v0.4.6.

- **Send now steers a working Claude turn (#737).**
`dispatchPendingText` committed every pending message with Enter, and
Claude Code queues what Enter commits during a turn. When Send now
steers a working Claude pane (`!automatic && beforeEnter.working`), the
committing key is now `ctrl+enter`, which Claude Code takes as "send
now". herdr encodes that key as the pane asked: `ESC[27;5;13~` under
modifyOtherKeys (what Claude Code asks for), `ESC[13;5u` under the kitty
protocol, and a plain CR for a program that asked for neither (measured
on herdr 0.9.3). Automatic next-turn delivery, an idle agent and every
other agent keep Enter.
- **The pending paste and its key carry the write-time guard (#666).**
Both RPCs now pass the lease-aware guard (`authorizePending` as a
predicate) that #624 gave the other input paths, so a sender that
detaches, switches roles, disconnects or is revoked while herdr's
connect is awaited writes nothing. A guard that refuses the paste leaves
the message unsent (held, with the lease's own error code). One that
refuses the key after the paste leaves it `uncertain`
(`submit_changed`), as before.
- **A send stopped before Claude answers goes back to the composer.**
This carries #741 by @Haeminway1 (commit authored by them), rebased on
main with conflicts resolved. See that PR for the full description. On
top of it, two fixes from its review:
- `GET /api/pane/prompt` took the viewport's ANSI read as both the box
and its colors, so a pane scrolled to an older box holding the chat's
last message answered it as `restored`, filling the composer and hiding
the turn (CodeRabbit). The route now checks the read it already makes,
then reads the live screen's box and takes the viewport's colors only
where `viewportShowsLive` verifies them, as the send paths do.
- The two Esc presses that empty Claude's restored copy now ask the
sender's right before each press and pass it to herdr as a guard
(CodeRabbit security review).

Fixes #666
Carries #741

## Verification

Integration and contract tests ran on an isolated herdr session
(`HERDR_TEST_SESSION=herdr-web-ui-test-l2`).

- Reproduced first. `server/pending-input.contract.test.ts` gained three
tests: a Claude steer commits with Ctrl+Enter while automatic delivery
and Codex keep Enter; and the paste's and the key's herdr connects are
held (a wrapped `paneSendText`/`paneSendKeys`) while the sender switches
observe→interact. All three failed on main (Claude got `\r`; the lapsed
lease still pasted and still committed) and pass with the fix.
- `restored` route: a new test in the same file scrolls a pane to an
older box holding the chat's message. It answers `restored: null`, and
the live box at the bottom answers the message. With #741's original
route it fails (`Received: "run the tests"`).
- `bun run typecheck`: pass.
- `bun run test:unit`: 2460 pass, 0 fail.
- `bun test ./server/pending-input.contract.test.ts
./server/submit.contract.test.ts ./server/api.contract.test.ts`: all
pass. `pending-input` is 41/41 and `submit` 36/36 after updating #741's
Esc assertion for the guard argument.
- `bun run build`, then `scripts/restored-draft-demo-regression.ts`
(#741's, added to `ci-browser.sh`), `composer-fit-demo-regression.ts`
and `held-rows-demo-regression.ts`: all PASS.
- `CHECK_MAX_RUNS=8 bun run check full` on 6b385d4 (before the merge of
main): workflow syntax, generated types, typecheck, build, unit tests,
integration (exit 0) and all 26 browser-lane scripts (exit 0).
- After merging `origin/main` (5792d71, #755; only `CHANGELOG.md`
conflicted): `bun run typecheck` pass, `bun run test:unit` 2467 pass / 0
fail, the three contract files 185 pass / 0 fail, and `restored-draft`,
`composer-fit` and #755's `default-view` browser scripts PASS.

Not verified live against a real Claude Code: the key choice follows the
issue's own live reproduction (Claude Code 2.1.294), and the bytes herdr
sends were measured above.
