Change

Follow-up to #677. An immediate chat Send to Claude Code is refused with input_draft while the terminal's input box is not empty, which is right. But the chat cannot show what the box holds. On a phone, Send then just seems not to work: the composer keeps the text, and the note says to clear something that is not visible from the chat. In the case that prompted this, the box held one stray ㅔ (the p key on a Korean keyboard). The only way out was to switch to the terminal, find it and delete it there. Typing the message in the terminal's input line instead joined the two, which is what #609 and #677 guard against.

The refusal stays. What changes:

  • Server (server/prompt.ts, server/index.ts): an immediate send refused with input_draft now names the draft in submit-result.draft when the bridge can clear it. claudeClearableDraft accepts only typed text on the box's single ❯ row, read with verified colors, with the same reads as claudeInputDraft. A submit with clear_draft clears the box with CLAUDE_CLEAR_INPUT_KEYS (ctrl+k, ctrl+u), but only while the box still holds exactly that text. It then polls the box (bounded, 1.5 s) until it reads empty, and only after that calls agent.prompt. A different draft, or a box that does not empty, is refused again with input_draft and nothing is typed.

  • Not offered:

    • bash mode: it needs a Backspace of its own, and an empty ! box reads like a suggestion;
    • a draft on more than one row;
    • [Pasted text #n] / [Image #n] placeholders;
    • a box read without verified colors.

    These keep today's note. Queued and terminal-line sends never clear: clear_draft there is invalid_delivery.

  • Keys: ctrl+k and ctrl+u only edit text, the same pair the question reader already uses on 2.1.295. Ctrl+C or Escape would interrupt a running turn, and Ctrl+C on an empty box arms Claude's exit. Afterwards Claude shows "Ctrl+Y to paste deleted text", so the cleared text can be restored in the terminal.

  • Client: the composer note names the draft and adds a Clear it and send button (DraftRefusal in lib/compose.ts), with ko/ja/zh entries. The browser-held queue and quick replies keep the plain note.

  • Protocol (shared/protocol.ts): optional clear_draft on submit and optional draft on submit-result, both covered in server/submit.contract.test.ts. An older bridge never sends draft, so the button does not appear there. The demo's transport answers submits as before and never refuses one, so it needs no change.

  • CHANGELOG (Unreleased → Fixed) and server/AGENTS.md are updated.

Refused After Clear it and send

(This branch's build, phone viewport 390×844, real Claude Code 2.1.295 in a throwaway herdr session.)

Validation

  • Real Claude Code 2.1.295, in a throwaway herdr session (not my working one):

    • ctrl+k, ctrl+u cleared a one-row draft, with the cursor at the end and in the middle, and Ctrl+Y restored it.
    • A long line that wraps lost only its last screen row, which is why a draft on more than one row is not offered.
    • In bash mode the keys left an empty ! box.
  • This branch's build on that session, in headless Chrome at 390×844:

    • With ㅔ in Claude's box, Send showed the note naming the draft, plus the button, and the composer kept the text.
    • One tap cleared the box, and Claude received the message without the ㅔ. No page errors.
  • server/submit.contract.test.ts (isolated herdr): 38 pass, 4 of them new. They check that the server:

    • clears the draft and then sends, in that order;
    • refuses, naming the new draft, when the box holds something else;
    • types nothing when the box does not empty;
    • rejects clear_draft on a queued, terminal-line or empty request.

    The existing refusal tests now also assert draft: named for a typed draft, absent for bash mode.

  • Unit tests: new claudeClearableDraft cases in server/prompt.test.ts and submitRefusal cases in src/lib/compose.test.ts.

  • On this branch (based on main at 6005735), Bun 1.4.2: generate:types --check, typecheck and build OK, and test:unit 2289 pass, 7 skip, 0 fail.

  • On my fork (fix(chat): name the draft in Claude's terminal input box and offer to clear it before Send jiunshinn/herdr-web-ui#16), the same change passed Fast checks, Integration and browser, and Native Windows install.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

… clear it before Send

An immediate chat Send to Claude Code is refused with input_draft while the
terminal's input box is not empty (devswha#677), but the chat could not show what
the box held. On a phone, Send just seemed not to work until the stray text
was found and deleted in the terminal.

The refusal now names a one-row draft (claudeClearableDraft: typed text on
the box's only ❯ row, read with verified colors), and the composer's note
shows it with a "Clear it and send" button. That send carries clear_draft:
the server clears the box with ctrl+k, ctrl+u only while it still holds
exactly that draft, waits for it to read empty, then sends. Bash mode, a
wrapped or multi-row draft, a placeholder and a box read without colors are
not offered, and a queued or terminal-line send never clears.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Immediate Claude Code sends now identify when the terminal input already contains a draft. You can choose Clear it and send to clear that exact draft and send your message; the draft remains available to restore with Ctrl+Y.
    • Messages are not sent if the draft has changed or the input has not cleared. Queued messages do not clear terminal drafts.

Walkthrough

Claude terminal sends now report the identifiable one-line input draft when blocked. An immediate retry can clear that exact draft, wait for the input to become empty, and then send. The composer displays a clear-and-send action. Queued and typed submissions cannot request draft clearing.

Claude Terminal Draft Flow

Layer / File(s) Summary
Draft detection and server clearing
shared/protocol.ts, server/prompt.ts, server/prompt.test.ts, server/index.ts, server/submit.contract.test.ts, server/AGENTS.md
The protocol adds fields for a named draft and a clear request. The server identifies clearable one-row Claude drafts, clears only a matching draft on an immediate send, and waits for the input to read empty before sending. Tests cover draft detection, mismatches, timeouts, and invalid delivery modes.
Draft result and retry transport
src/lib/ws.ts, src/lib/compose.ts, src/lib/compose.test.ts, src/components/PaneTerminal.tsx
WebSocket submit results preserve draft details, and submit requests can carry a clear request. Pane submission forwards that request for immediate delivery and converts draft refusals into structured results.
Composer retry action and copy
src/components/Composer.tsx, src/components/Composer.css, src/lib/i18n.*.ts, CHANGELOG.md
The composer displays a draft refusal and a “Clear it and send” action. The action retries with the named draft and is disabled during specified unavailable states. Styling, translations, and the changelog describe the update.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 1f66e

Clear it and send can delete terminal text without delivering the message in a few edge cases. This can happen when the draft changed only by whitespace, when the send times out after clearing, or when connected to an older bridge, which can also send the stray draft together with the message. The cleared text can be restored with Ctrl+Y, but these cases should be tightened before merge.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 1f66e

The new confirmation flow limits which drafts can be cleared, but its comparison does not preserve exact input identity, and clearing is separate from checking the live input and current permission. Changed content could therefore be cleared without matching what the user approved. The exposure is bounded to accessible terminal panes; no new unauthenticated access is established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · observed: The new clear authorization uses normalized display text rather than exact input identity. Leading-space changes and nonbreaking-space substitutions can retain the same clear_draft token, allowing changed input to be cleared despite the exact-match contract. Normalization existed in draft classification, but this PR newly uses normalized text to authorize destructive mutation.
  • Medium · security · inferred: Live-state and permission checks are not atomic with the new destructive key write. Terminal input and direct API writers can change the box after matching; revocation or observe-mode changes can occur while the unguarded key RPC connects. Clearing can consequently affect newer input or complete after authority is withdrawn. Serialization protects ordinary queued WebSocket input, and later checks can stop prompt delivery, but neither reverses an already performed clear.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Each clear targets one supplied pane ID. A caller with broad interact access can address reachable panes, but arbitrary pane-key mutation already existed under the same access gates in the base. The supported new risks concern draft integrity and in-flight authority, not a demonstrated new tenant boundary or privilege escalation.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The retained normalization finding concerns a newly introduced destructive use: different input strings can yield the same returned draft token, which the retry compares before sending clear keys. Previously, those nonempty drafts caused refusal rather than clearing.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Connection access and same-origin checks precede WebSocket upgrade; submission checks observe mode and rechecks revocation/read-only state after screen reads. These controls constrain entry, but the clear RPC does not revalidate authority at its actual write boundary.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The transition is not transactional: clearing precedes prompt delivery, and subsequent refusal or transport failure has no automatic restoration in this path. Empty-input polling contains some delivery failures but cannot restore input deleted through a stale match.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Separate readable draft display from lossless state identity, bind clearing to current sender authority at the write boundary, and use an input-owner compare-and-clear operation where supported. If competing writers cannot be protected, preserve refusal rather than promising exact-match automatic clearing.

Owner

Maintainer follow-up on this PR (pushed to the branch):

  • Review threads: the CHANGELOG entry links the PR; clearing starts only with the submit budget reserved, and any failure after the first clearing key is reported as submit_partial with the chat text kept; the draft is matched on the raw row, so trailing whitespace is part of it; a bridge without submit answers unsupported to a clear request.
  • Adversarial review fixes: clearing is refused when a masked prompt, approval, model list or blocked state owns input (the pane state is read before the screen the check uses), and when the pane is no longer the Claude terminal/session the draft was named in, with no shell fallback; the demo transport validates and refuses clear_draft.
  • Accepted limit, documented in server/AGENTS.md: the final draft comparison and the clearing keys are not atomic (herdr has no compare-and-clear), so text another client types in the moments after an explicit "Clear it and send" click can be cleared too.

Thanks @jiunshinn!

## Problem
From 0.4.7 testing of #728: the refusal note ("Not sent: Claude Code's
input box in the terminal already holds “heelo”." + **Clear it and
send**) rendered as small red text below the composer card, looking
detached from the box and sitting at the very bottom edge on a phone.

## Change
- `Composer`: the note (plain or with its action) renders before
`.composer-surface` instead of after it, with a `TriangleAlert` icon;
one element for both variants.
- `Composer.css`: `.composer-note` is a band — danger tint, hairline
border, `--radius-lg`, `--fs-sm`, the box's width (`min(100%,
var(--chat-w))` as before) — with the action pushed to the end and
wrapping under the text on a narrow row.

The "untranslated" part of the report was the PC browser's app language:
with Korean selected the note renders in Korean (verified in the demo);
the strings shipped in 0.4.7.

## Tests
- `composer-fit-demo-regression`: the "Update this PC" note now also
asserts it sits above the message box and is as wide as it.
- `bun run check fast`, `composer-fit-demo-regression`, `ui-regression`
pass.
- Screenshots (demo, input_draft refusal faked on the socket) at 1100px
and 390px checked.
