The piece you left open when you closed #569: "a clear warning in the UI when the app is open to the LAN with no token and no paired device."

Nothing about who is let in changes. decideAccess still answers open for every client that can reach the address; this only says so out loud. Pairing a device or setting a token stays the owner's decision, which is the whole reason the default is yours to keep.

What shows, and where

A line over the panes, in the same stack as the update, telemetry and machine-action notices — role="status", so it is announced when it appears, with a button into Settings → Phone & devices. It is not dismissible: this is the server's state, not an event, so it leaves when the state does and a dismissed warning would not come back if the state returned.

Why the health endpoint, and why authenticated only

lanExposed({ hostname, tokenConfigured, gated }) (server/access.ts) is the condition, and it is a separate exported predicate because it is a security claim that deserves a direct test. /api/health carries the result as lan_exposure: { host }.

It is never sent to a request that did not get in. "This host runs herdr-web-ui with no token" is reconnaissance for whoever is asking, not help. The state is in fact only reachable by an authenticated client in almost every configuration (with a token set, tokenConfigured is true and the field is absent anyway), but a Funnel or serve-proxied refusal on a tokenless server is reachable without a cookie, so the guard is explicit rather than incidental.

A loopback bind with the same empty configuration is not warned about: it is unreachable from the network however it is addressed. hostname is the bind address, not the request's Host.

Verification — and what I could not run

bun run typecheck clean
bun test ./server/access.test.ts 15 pass / 0 fail (the predicate: 6 cases)
bun test ./src/lib/i18n.test.ts pass (all three dictionaries)

The endpoint contract test is the gap. It is in server/api.contract.test.ts as AGENTS.md asks, asserting lan_exposure present for a 0.0.0.0 bind with no token and no devices, absent for a loopback bind, and absent with a token set — but /api/health answers only after ping(), and I have no live herdr session here, so I could not run it. CI's integration lane is the first place it executes. Please treat that test as unproven until it goes green there; if it needs a different home to be runnable, tell me.

Also in the diff

  • SettingsDialog's section prop gained "devices", so a button can point at that page the way the Updates button already points into About. Two lines in the same file that already had the mechanism.
  • No new translation keys beyond the one sentence; the ko/ja/zh strings are mine and want a native eye — this repo has real speakers and I do not.
  • The demo transport needs no change: the field is optional, so the demo simply shows no notice.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a prominent notice when the server is reachable over the network without an access token or paired device. It identifies the exposed address and links to device settings.
    • Clarified that the notice is informational and does not change who can access the server.
    • Added translations for the notice in Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, and Turkish.
📝 Summary

Walkthrough

The server reports LAN exposure in eligible health responses. The app displays a translated warning with the bound host and a link to Devices settings. A browser regression script checks the warning for network and loopback binds.

Changes

LAN Exposure Notice

Layer / File(s) Summary
Determine and report LAN exposure
shared/protocol.ts, server/access.ts, server/index.ts, server/access.test.ts, server/api.contract.test.ts
The health response includes the bound host when access is full, the bind is not loopback, no token is configured, and access is not gated. Tests cover exposure conditions and health responses.
Display notice and open device settings
src/lib/api.ts, src/components/LanExposureNotice.*, src/App.tsx, src/lib/i18n.*, CHANGELOG.md
The app displays a translated warning when health data contains LAN exposure. Its button opens Devices settings. The changelog describes the warning and states it does not change access decisions.
Verify notice in browser CI
scripts/lan-exposure-notice-regression.ts, scripts/ci-browser.sh, scripts/ci-browser.test.ts, tsconfig.tools.json
The browser regression checks the notice on 0.0.0.0 and its absence on 127.0.0.1. Browser CI runs the script, and the tools TypeScript configuration includes it.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to a2c45

The server can omit the exposure warning for certain bind names or while herdr is unavailable. Access behavior is unchanged; the PR is mergeable with these bounded warning gaps acknowledged or fixed.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 0e2e6

Access permissions remain unchanged, and the new exposure information is restricted to clients already allowed in. The main concern is that a failed health check removes the warning even when the server’s access configuration has not changed.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · observed: The new access-configuration warning depends on successful terminal-service health reporting. A ping error causes the server to return an error instead of the exposure observation; the browser then clears health and removes the warning without any corresponding access-configuration change. This is a security-signal availability concern, not an authorization bypass. A subsequent successful poll restores the notice.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The added disclosure is the configured bind address for a server whose eligible caller already has full access. Refused callers and bridge-scope health requests receive no exposure field. The feature grants no additional terminal, device-management, or cross-machine authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The reviewed path does not show a new authentication bypass: public health reachability does not itself enable the field. The supported concern is loss of the new warning on health failure. The inspected evidence does not establish an attacker-controlled trigger for that failure.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The explicit full-access check protects the exposure observation even though health is publicly reachable for gate discovery. Attacker-supplied Host and proxy headers remain inputs to the existing identity policy, but they do not become the reported bind address.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The client’s health-clearing failure behavior predates this PR, but attaching the new security warning to that state introduces the warning-availability dependency. Bridge health independently maintains the access gate, and successful full-health polling restores the warning, limiting the concern to security communication.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Consider reporting access-configuration exposure independently of terminal-service liveness, while retaining the same disclosure guard. Alternatively, represent failed observations as unknown or explicitly stale rather than silently removing a previously established warning.

Render check — completed, with measurements

Rendering the notice itself now rather than leaving it to review. I mounted the real LanExposureNotice with the shipped CSS chain — styles.css tokens, the .update-notice base from UpdateControls.css, and the .is-exposed alarm colors — inside SettingsProvider, then drove it in headless Chromium at three widths and read the geometry and colors back off the live DOM:

Width Notice box "Phone & devices" button Layout
375 px (phone) 375×89 129×40, same line, right sentence left, button right
320 px (smallest common phone) 320×113 129×40, drops to its own line wraps cleanly, nothing clips
1280 px (desktop) 1280×51 129×40, right single row

That's the same flex: 1 1 12rem text / space-between layout the update and telemetry notices already use: the sentence takes the room, the button keeps to the end of the line, and it wraps below on a narrow phone. No overflow or clipping at any width, and the button stays visible and tappable throughout.

Colors: background rgba(255, 123, 112, 0.12) (--danger-tint) and text #ffd9d4 (--danger-text) over .update-notice's default --bg-elevated / --text-strong. The alarm tint is clearly distinct from the neutral notice, so this won't be mistaken for an update or telemetry line.

Coverage: lanExposed is exercised directly in server/access.test.ts (the "names the one state a warning belongs to" and "quiet whenever one of the three is not" cases). The full /api/health body — including that lan_exposure attaches only after ping() and never to a caller that didn't get in — is the integration lane's job, since ping() needs a live herdr to answer; that's the lane api.contract.test.ts runs in by design.

Correction: my previous comment was wrong. I reported "there is no Chromium in this environment" — that was true only of PATH and /opt/google/chrome, which is where I looked. Playwright's own browser cache was already populated (~/.cache/ms-playwright), and playwright-core resolves it with no CHROME_PATH at all. I should have looked there before telling you a limitation that was mine to clear.

The notice is now verified in real Chromium against the built client and the real serveStatic:

exposed (1100px): visible · text "Anyone who can reach 0.0.0.0 on your network can type
into every pane: no access token is set and no device is paired yet.
                  Phone & devices" · background rgba(255, 123, 112, 0.12) (--danger-tint)
exposed (390px) : visible · same text and tint, wraps to four lines, button holds right
not exposed : not rendered
no page errors

The last line is the control: with lan_exposure absent from /api/health the notice does not appear, so it is not rendering unconditionally. What I was unsure about specifically — the phone wrapping and the tint resolving from the token rather than a literal — is now answered, and the wrapping is fine.

Two things this does not cover, unchanged:

  • /api/health is canned in that harness because the real one answers only after ping(). So the client rendering is proved; the server's emission of lan_exposure is still only covered by the contract test in api.contract.test.ts, which CI's integration lane runs first.
  • Screenshots exist (lan-notice-desktop.png, lan-notice-phone.png) but GitHub comments take no attachments. Say the word and I will commit them, or commit the check itself as a browser script — your call, given you would rather p0-verify.ts stayed out of the tree.

Second correction: the server side is verified too. I installed herdr (0.9.3) and ran the endpoint contract test against a live session. It passes:

HERDR_TEST_MODE=integration bun test ./server/api.contract.test.ts
99 pass / 0 fail / 732 expect() calls        (18.7s)

That includes the test this PR added — lan_exposure is { host: "0.0.0.0" } for a 0.0.0.0 bind with no token and no devices, absent for a loopback bind, absent once a token is set — asserted through the real /api/health, whose ping() now answers against a live herdr rather than being canned.

So both halves of this PR are now checked rather than argued: the server emits the field (contract test, live herdr) and the client renders it (Chromium, with the absent-field control).

The only thing left genuinely open is whether you want the browser check itself in the tree. I deleted it as a throwaway because you said you would rather p0-verify.ts stayed out, but unlike that one it needs no stub server or build juggling — it drives the built client through the real serveStatic with /api/health canned, and it fails if the notice ever renders when the server is not exposed. I would put it in scripts/ and wire it into the browser lane if you want the regression held; say no and it stays deleted.

Taking you up on the offer: the browser check is now in the tree rather than deleted, and it meets the condition you set for p0-verify.ts — it runs in the lane, and it is typechecked.

scripts/lan-exposure-notice-regression.ts wired into scripts/ci-browser.sh, added to tsconfig.tools.json

It is also a better check than the throwaway I described earlier, because it stubs nothing at all:

exposed   : {"visible":true, "text":"Anyone who can reach 0.0.0.0 on your network can type into every pane: no access token is set and no device is paired yet. Phone & devices", "tint":"rgba(255, 123, 112, 0.12)"}
PASS the open-to-the-network notice appears and names the address
loopback  : {"visible":false, "text":null, "tint":null}
PASS a loopback bind with no token and nothing paired shows no notice

Real createServer, a real herdr behind it (scripts/test-herdr.ts), the real built client, the real serveStatic. /api/health is the server's own answer, not a canned one — so this also holds the server half in the browser lane, which the contract test only does in the integration lane.

The second assertion is the point. A notice that rendered unconditionally would pass an "it appears" test while training the owner to ignore a line that is only true sometimes. The loopback case is the same empty configuration on a loopback bind — unreachable from the network however it is addressed — and it must show nothing.

Two things to be aware of:

  • It needs dist/, the way ui-regression.ts does, so it is a browser-lane script rather than a test:ui one (that one builds; the lane does not, and adding a build there would slow every script behind it).
  • It adds roughly seven seconds to the lane: one server, one browser, two page loads.

If seven seconds is not worth it, say so and I will take it back out — the notice has been verified by hand either way, and this is about holding it rather than proving it once.

Read the Resolution table against merged upstream and the live PR state:
S6 (devswha#697), V8 (devswha#693) and A1's label gap (devswha#695) are merged, each cited to its
merge commit; RC2 is sent as devswha#732; RC3 stays unsent and now names the durable
archive ref (f79e65e) instead of an unpushed working copy. S1 is unchanged:
devswha#698 is still open.
The one piece of S1 the maintainer left open when declining default-deny:
a line over the panes, when the server is bound past this PC with no
access token and nothing paired, saying so and offering Settings ->
Phone & devices. Nothing about who is let in changes - lanExposed only
reports the state decideAccess already decided.

/api/health carries it as lan_exposure, to a request that got in and to
nobody else: 'this host runs herdr-web-ui with no token' is reconnaissance
for an anonymous caller, not help.
The check that would have caught the notice rendering unconditionally: a
server bound past this PC with no token and nothing paired must show it,
and the same empty configuration on a loopback bind must not.

No stubbing: the real server, a real herdr behind it (scripts/test-herdr.ts),
the real built client, the real serveStatic. Wired into the browser lane
and added to tsconfig.tools.json, so unlike p0-verify.ts it is neither
unrun nor unchecked.

devswha and others added 5 commits October 12, 2026 10:20
Conflicts resolved onto main's current shape:
- App.tsx / SettingsDialog.tsx: main added Settings deep links (linkPage); the
notice's "Phone & devices" button now opens the Devices page through
setSettingsLinkPage("devices"), so SettingsDialog keeps main's section prop.
- server/index.ts: LOOPBACK_HOSTNAMES dropped for access.ts's LOOPBACK_BIND_HOSTNAMES,
  main's isPaneDirection kept.
- api.contract.test.ts: main's protocol imports plus LanExposure.
- ci-browser.sh, tsconfig.tools.json: main's lists plus the notice regression.
- CHANGELOG: entry under the new [Unreleased], credited to @pt-act.
- i18n.tr.ts (added on main): the notice sentence in Turkish.
… notice end to end

Review follow-ups on devswha#698 (Codex astra medium, 2026-10-12):

- `isLoopbackBind` replaces the three-string list: `127.0.0.2`, `[::1]`,
`LOCALHOST`, `::ffff:127.0.0.1` and `*.localhost` are loopback too, so
neither the UI notice nor the startup warning cries wolf there. The startup
warning in server/index.ts shares the predicate. Tests cover both sides,
  including `::`, `[::]`, a LAN and a tailnet address.
- The health contract test now proves the authenticated-only guard with a
request that is refused (Funnel) on the exposed, tokenless server, and that
pairing one device takes the field away. Each case runs on its own state dir.
- The browser regression waits for the health answer and the live session
  before looking, so the loopback case cannot pass on a page that never asked;
the background is compared with the resolved `--danger-tint` instead of
"not null"; the notice's button is clicked and must open Settings on
  Phone & devices.
- Browser lane count 41 after devswha#606 landed on main.
- ko/ja/zh/tr strings use each dictionary's fixed terms (패널/페어링/접속 토큰,
  ペイン/デバイス, 窗格/访问 Token, erişim anahtarı).
- Trailing newlines on the new files.

Maintainer review done; follow-ups pushed to this branch as a2c4553 (main merged in as d4f4e72, CHANGELOG only):

  • isLoopbackBind replaces the three-string list, so 127.0.0.2, [::1], LOCALHOST, ::ffff:127.0.0.1 and *.localhost count as loopback for both the notice and the startup warning. Tests cover both sides.
  • The contract test now proves the authenticated-only guard with a refused (Funnel) request on the exposed, tokenless server, and that pairing one device takes the field away.
  • The browser regression waits for the health answer and the live session before looking, compares the background with the resolved --danger-tint, and clicks the button to check it lands on Phone & devices.
  • Browser lane count 41 (feat(machines): discover saved herdr PCs with connection approval #606 added a script on main meanwhile).
  • ko/ja/zh/tr wording aligned with each dictionary's fixed terms (패널/페어링/접속 토큰 and so on).

Verified locally: typecheck, build, unit tests, the live contract test and the new browser script all pass. Merging once the fork CI run finishes. Thanks for the careful PR and the honest verification notes.

CodeRabbit on a2c4553: isLoopbackBind applied the 127. prefix test to any
name, so HOST=127.devbox.example would have silenced the warning. The address
