A replica that goes down while Primary and writing leaves its activity log open, and drbdmeta answers the metadata probe with "please apply-al first". The satellite read that as "no metadata" and ran create-md --force, which destroys the replica's generation identifiers and dirty bitmap. If it held the only up-to-date copy, that copy came back as something to sync into. It treated a crash the same as a foreign superblock because it had no per-volume record to tell them apart.

The record is the set of GIs this replica's volume was seen to carry. The observer writes every GI it reads into a per-resource history file in the satellite's state directory. That file outlives the status field, which is dropped whenever the volume leaves a data-bearing disk state, and survives a restart; the GI in the status counts too. It is fsynced before it replaces the old one, deleting the resource drops it, a volume that leaves the definition drops its entries, and a failed write is logged.

  • A dirty log on a volume with no record is initialised as before: a clone, a snapshot receive, a volume added to a live resource, a replica created again.
  • One with a record is repaired with drbdadm apply-al. Then some UUID in its metadata, the current one, any peer slot's bitmap UUID or a history UUID, has to be one it was seen with, compared without the Primary bit. A Primary that lost a peer keeps its old current UUID only in that peer's bitmap slot, which get-gi never shows, and after a resync the GI sits in the history block. So the check reads dump-md, in both the v09 and the v08 layout. If none matches, the superblock is not this replica's and it gets metadata of its own after all.
  • A failed apply-al, a failed metadata read, or a dump whose current UUID the parser cannot read (missing, without the 0x prefix, not hex, or zero) is an error rather than a re-initialisation, on both metadata paths.
  • External metadata takes the same check: dump-md finds the meta disk from the .res. Its record holds only the status GI for now, since the observer reads GIs with a get-gi that assumes internal metadata.

Both metadata paths (ensureMetadata and ensurePerVolumeMetadata) take the same repair. A volume with no record falls back to the old behaviour, so this only ever narrows when metadata is destroyed. A failed repair surfaces in the satellite log and as a requeue; there is no Event for it yet. The check holds the whole dump-md output, bitmap included, in memory once per repair.

Fixes #184

Testing

  • New tests drive both paths: a GI known from the status or from the history file, found only in a peer's bitmap slot, only in the history block or with the Primary bit flipped, is repaired with no create-md; metadata that does not name it is initialised, internal or external; a failing apply-al or metadata read is an error with no create-md; the history survives a restart, keeps the newest 32 GIs per volume and goes with the resource; the observer records GIs only for data-bearing volumes, and the one the manager runs feeds the reconciler. The parser fixtures follow the layout print_dump_gi in drbd-utils prints. Reverting the block parsing, the Primary-bit comparison, the history lookup, the fail-closed read, the external-metadata check, the cap, the delete cleanup, the repeat cache or the observer wiring reddens the matching test.
  • go test ./...: green apart from the known pkg/rest shutdown flake.
  • golangci-lint 2.11.4 (the CI pin) over the whole tree: clean.
  • Not run against real DRBD. The e2e the issue asks for (crash a writing Primary, bring the satellite back) needs a stand, and I had none for this round.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • The system now tracks observed volume generations and keeps a history of recent generations to help recognize existing data during recovery.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved recovery of unclean volume metadata: matching generations can be repaired and retained, while unfamiliar generations are initialized safely.
    • Recovery now stops with an error if repair or validation fails, rather than proceeding with uncertain metadata.
    • Generation history is cleaned up when resources or volumes are removed and avoids storing repeated observations.

Walkthrough

The change records observed generation identifiers (GIs) for satellite volumes, persists their history, and parses DRBD metadata UUIDs. When metadata is unclean, both reconciliation paths apply the activity log and compare metadata UUIDs with observed and recorded GIs before deciding whether to retain or initialize metadata.

Changes: Observed GI and metadata recovery

Layer / File(s) Summary
GI contract and persistent history
pkg/satellite/intent/types.go, pkg/dispatcher/dispatcher.go, pkg/dispatcher/observed_gi_test.go, pkg/satellite/gi_history.go, pkg/satellite/reconciler.go, pkg/satellite/createmd_test.go
Desired volumes carry the GI reported for the matching status volume. The reconciler records per-volume GI history, retains up to 32 generations, and removes history for deleted resources or volumes.
Observer GI capture
pkg/satellite/controllers/observer.go, pkg/satellite/controllers/manager.go, pkg/satellite/controllers/observer_record_gi_test.go
The observer records existing or backfilled GIs for data-bearing volumes. Manager construction wires the recorder callback to the reconciler.
DRBD metadata UUID parsing
pkg/drbd/dumpmd.go, pkg/drbd/dumpmd_test.go, pkg/storage/exec.go
The DRBD wrapper parses UUIDs from v08 and v09 metadata dumps. Generation comparison ignores the lowest bit. FakeExec supports ordered responses for repeated commands.
Unclean metadata recovery
pkg/satellite/reconciler.go, pkg/satellite/createmd_test.go
Both metadata paths repair unclean metadata and compare its UUIDs with observed or recorded GIs. Matching metadata is retained; absent or foreign matches lead to initialization. Repair and parsing errors are returned.

Explanation

The changed files support [#184]. pkg/drbd/dumpmd.go and its tests add dump parsing and the generation comparison. pkg/satellite/gi_history.go and reconciler.go add the per-volume GI record and the repair path. pkg/satellite/controllers/observer.go, manager.go, pkg/dispatcher/dispatcher.go and pkg/satellite/intent/types.go carry the observed GI to the reconciler. pkg/storage/exec.go adds ordered fake responses that the tests use. The tests cover the new recording, repair, cleanup, persistence and fail-closed paths. The diff was not readable through the tool for this review. This result relies on the file summaries and the paths named above. No unrelated change is shown.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Requirement group [#184]: a replica with a known GI is repaired with apply-al, and a dump with no readable current UUID is an error. Most of this is implemented at the reviewed head. pkg/drbd/dumpmd.go now sets the recognised-current flag for v09 only when current-uuid yields a readable, nonzero UUID. The previous FAIL for that case is resolved. The GI history, peer-bitmap and history-UUID checks, the Primary-bit comparison and the fail-closed read paths are present.

Unmet part: the v08 path does not apply the same rule. In ParseMetadataUUIDs, the uuid key sets current = current || key == dumpKeyV08 before any UUID is read. The first entry of the v08 uuid block is the current UUID. A block whose first entry is zero, lacks the 0x prefix, or is not hex still sets the flag when other entries are readable. Example: uuid { followed by 0x0000000000000000; 0x6E3A5D0B2C1F4A96; ...} parses without error, and the reconciler then accepts the superblock if a history or bitmap UUID matches. The issue and the PR description require a dump whose current UUID is missing, unprefixed, non-hex or zero to fail closed in both the v09 and v08 layouts. TestParseMetadataUUIDsRefusesWhatItCannotRead covers the zero and unprefixed current UUID only for v09 current-uuid. No v08 case covers it.

Unverified part: the issue acceptance requires the clone, ship and restore e2e scenarios to stay green. The PR states these were not run against real DRBD. This does not change the result above, but the acceptance criterion is not established.

Resolution

In pkg/drbd/dumpmd.go, the v08 uuid block must set current only when its first entry is a readable, nonzero hex UUID. Otherwise return ErrUnreadableMetadataDump. Add v08 regression tests where the first entry is zero, and where it lacks the 0x prefix, with other UUIDs readable. Confirm that repairUncleanMetadata returns an error and does not run create-md for these dumps on both metadata paths. Run the [#184] clone, ship and restore e2e scenarios, or report them as unresolved.

NOT LGTM — when dump-md succeeds but prints nothing the parser recognises, a replica with a known GI still gets create-md --force, and the per-volume failure path has no test.

Andrei Kvapil (@kvaps) The approach is right, and the ordering holds. After a reboot the kernel holds nothing, so the per-volume path renders the .res before it probes, and apply-al finds the volume. I read the whole diff against main at d1c3ae5, checked the parser against print_dump_gi in current drbd-utils, ran the touched packages and mutated the decision branches.

Blockers:

  1. A dump the parser cannot read re-initialises a known replica. ParseMetadataUUIDs has no failure mode. Empty output, a renamed keyword or a scanner that stopped on a long line all return an empty list (scanner.Err() is not checked). repairUncleanMetadata then reads the empty list as a foreign superblock and goes to create-md. I tried it with a scratch test on ensurePerVolumeMetadata: known GI, apply-al succeeds, and the second dump-md returns either "" or a dump with current-gi in place of current-uuid. Both runs returned nil and ran create-md. HasMD in the same package refuses to call metadata absent on wording it does not know, and this check should do the same. An empty parse, a parse with no current-uuid statement, or a scan error should be an error, with a test.

  2. Only one of the two metadata paths has the fail-closed test. TestEnsureMetadataFailsClosedWhenTheRepairFails calls ensureMetadata only. I made ensurePerVolumeMetadata turn a repair error into hasMD=false, which sends it to create-md, and the package stayed green. A rebooted node takes exactly this path (MetadataCreated set, nothing attached), and the PR body says both paths are tested for a failing apply-al or metadata read. Running the test through runMetadataPath over both paths fixes it.

  3. Commits 2 and 3 describe fixes to commit 1, not changes to main. Squash here uses the commit messages, so all three bodies end up on main, and a merge commit keeps them too. "The parser read neither, so a GI that a resync had moved into the history was never found and the replica was initialised after all" describes a parser main never had. "Remove the temporary file when the rename fails, state the window the delete lock leaves open, and give the dump fixtures the bitmap header drbdmeta prints for v09" walks through the diff. Folding both into the first commit fixes it.

Every other branch I mutated goes red: the unclean branch on both paths, the apply-al and dump-md failures on ensureMetadata, a mismatch kept as a match, the Primary-bit compare, the history block, the status GI, the dispatcher and observer wiring, the delete cleanup and the cap.

Non-blocking:

  1. The three new test files have no SPDX header, which AGENTS.md asks for. These are pkg/drbd/dumpmd_test.go, pkg/dispatcher/observed_gi_test.go and pkg/satellite/controllers/observer_record_gi_test.go. Every other test file in those packages has one.
  2. The history outlives a removed volume. It is keyed by volume number and dropped only with the whole resource, so a volume removed and added again under the same number inherits the old GIs. A lower disk that still carries the old volume's unclean superblock would then be kept, not initialised. Dropping a volume's entries when it leaves the desired set would close this.
  3. The record never fills for external metadata. The observer reads the GI with get-gi, which hard-codes internal (pkg/drbd/drbdadm.go:869), and events2 does not carry current-uuid. Today this doesn't matter, because the meta volume is never carved and TestApplyProvisionsBothDataAndMeta is skipped. Once the carve lands, "External metadata takes the same check" in the body and in the repairUncleanMetadata comment stops being true.
  4. A failed write of the record is silent. RecordObservedGI drops the error with no log line, so an unwritable state dir turns the protection off and nobody sees it.
  5. Two texts go stale. The body still says "Stacked on #190", and #190 has merged. In #205, the troubleshooting section "Metadata re-created after an unclean shutdown" describes the behaviour this PR removes.
  6. The red integration job is not from this diff. TestGroupG/SnapCreateListDelete is already red on main. TestGroupKWFHappyPath is a snapshot-create timeout that also failed on an unrelated branch on 2026-10-24.

This branch is also reached with an empty onDisk, when dump-md succeeded but printed nothing ParseMetadataUUIDs recognises. That case should be an error, not a go-ahead for create-md (blocker 1).

This covers ensureMetadata only. If ensurePerVolumeMetadata turns a repair error into hasMD=false, the package stays green. Running the test through runMetadataPath over both paths pins it (blocker 2).

Thanks, head 73760d8, squashed to one commit whose message describes the change against main.

  1. ParseMetadataUUIDs returns an error for a dump that names no current UUID, a v09 current-uuid or a v08 uuid block, and for a scanner error. Empty output, your renamed keyword and an over-long line are tested in pkg/drbd, and the repair answers all of them as an error with no create-md.
  2. TestEnsureMetadataFailsClosedWhenTheRepairFails runs both paths through runMetadataPath, with the two unreadable-dump cases added. Turning the per-volume repair error into hasMD=false turns four subtests red.
  3. Done, one commit.

Non-blocking: the three test files carry the header; a volume that leaves the definition drops its record (TestRemovedVolumeLosesItsGIRecord); a failed record write logs a warning; the comment and the body now say the record does not fill for external metadata yet. The #205 troubleshooting section describes main, so it changes with the release that ships this.

Andrei Kvapil (@kvaps) NOT LGTM: a metadata dump whose current UUID the parser cannot read still sends a replica with a known GI to create-md --force.

I re-read the whole diff against main at e5d4914 and tested it merged with main at 7bb6606. Two of the three blockers are closed. The per-volume path has its fail-closed test now: when I turn its repair error into hasMD=false, the four per-volume subtests and TestUnreadableGIRecordFailsClosed go red. The branch is one commit, and its message describes the change against main. Empty output, a renamed keyword and an over-long line are errors now, and removing either the !current check or the scanner.Err() check turns the parser and repair tests red.

Blocker:

  1. The first blocker is only partly fixed. current is set as soon as a line starts with current-uuid (or uuid for v08), whether or not a UUID was read from that line. appendUUIDStatements drops a value without the 0x prefix, a non-hex value and a zero UUID. Such a dump returns an empty list and no error, and repairUncleanMetadata treats it as a foreign superblock. I checked it with a scratch test on both paths: known GI, apply-al succeeds, and the second dump-md prints current-uuid 6E3A5D0B2C1F4A96; or current-uuid 0x0000000000000000;. All four runs returned nil and ran create-md. The PR body says a dump that names no current UUID the parser recognises is an error, and this one is not. Counting the current statement only when it yields a hex UUID, and treating an empty result as unreadable, would close it. A test with either dump would pin it.

Non-blocking:

  1. Dropping a removed volume's record is not pinned where it runs. TestRemovedVolumeLosesItsGIRecord calls keepGIHistoryOf directly, and when I deleted the call from applyOne, pkg/satellite stayed green.
  2. A sibling PR breaks a test here without a textual conflict. #224 makes get-gi pass - instead of <resource>/<volume>, while TestObserverRecordsTheGIOfDataBearingVolumes expects the old command line. On main plus both PRs the test fails with recorded map[1:1111111111111110], so whichever PR merges second has to update the fixture.
  3. The API group rename still carries the old version of this branch. #221 merged d1c3ae5 and now conflicts with the current head in five files.
  4. The non-blocking points from the last round are addressed: the SPDX headers, the record of a removed volume, the warning on a failed write, and the external-metadata wording in the comment and the body. The "Stacked on #190" line is gone too.
  5. The red integration job is not from this diff. TestGroupG/SnapCreateListDelete times out waiting for a Snapshot CRD to appear, which this PR does not touch, and the same test failed on the fix/luks-inherit-layer-stack branch (run 40550448711). Every other job is green, all E2E lanes included.

…-initialising it

A replica that goes down while Primary and writing leaves its activity
log open, and drbdmeta answers the metadata probe with "please apply-al
first". The satellite read that as "no metadata" and ran create-md
--force, which destroys the replica's generation identifiers and dirty
bitmap; if it held the only up-to-date copy, that copy came back as
something to sync into. It treated a crash the same as a foreign
superblock, because it had no per-volume record to tell them apart.

The record is the set of GIs this replica's volume was seen to carry.
The observer writes every GI it reads into a per-resource history file
in the satellite's state directory, which outlives the status field
(that one is dropped whenever the volume leaves a data-bearing state)
and a restart; the GI in the status counts too. The file is fsynced
before it replaces the old one, goes with the resource, and drops a
volume that leaves the definition; a failed write is logged, and a
record that cannot be read is an error rather than an empty record.

A dirty log on a volume with no record is initialised as before: a
clone, a receive, a volume added to a live resource. One with a record
is repaired with apply-al, and some UUID then in its metadata, current,
a peer slot's bitmap UUID or history, has to be one it was seen with,
compared without the Primary bit; otherwise the superblock is not this
replica's and it gets metadata of its own. A Primary that lost a peer
keeps its old current UUID only in that peer's bitmap slot, and a
resync moves it into the history block, neither of which get-gi shows,
so the check reads dump-md in the v09 and v08 layouts. A failed
apply-al, a failed metadata read, or a dump whose current UUID cannot
be read is an error rather than a re-initialisation, on both metadata
paths.

Thanks, head 469d9a7, still one commit.

The current statement counts only when it gives a UUID, and a dump that yields no UUID at all is unreadable too. Your two dumps, current-uuid 6E3A5D0B2C1F4A96; and current-uuid 0x0000000000000000;, are subtests on both metadata paths and in the parser test, and a dump with an unreadable current UUID next to a readable bitmap UUID pins the rule itself: counting the current statement without its UUID turns that one red.

Non-blocking 1: TestApplyDropsTheGIRecordOfARemovedVolume runs the drop through Apply, and deleting the call from applyOne turns it red. I'll update TestObserverRecordsTheGIOfDataBearingVolumes on whichever of this and #224 lands second.

Minor follow-up Record the first GI before a new replica takes writes.

3738-3742: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Record the first GI before a new replica takes writes.

A replica that is activated for the first time can take writes before the observer records its first GI. The observer records a GI only when the volume has a non-empty CurrentUUID. It runs this on DRBD events and on a 5-second tick. If the replica crashes in that window, its dirty activity log has no recorded GI and no observed GI. repairUncleanMetadata then returns false, nil before apply-al. The caller runs create-md --force, which resets the GI and dirty bitmap of the replica that holds those writes.

A first-activation marker cannot serve as the record. firstActivation and .md-created are per resource. A volume added to a live resource can start with a foreign superblock while the marker exists. The record must name a generation that exists before the first write.

Stop GI reads taken before deletion from recreating the history file.

forgetGIHistory removes the history file and its cache entries, but RecordObservedGI does not check whether the resource instance still exists. On the DRBD version this code targets, current-uuid is absent from events2 device frames. The non-empty UUID therefore comes from adm.CurrentGI, which backfillCurrentGI calls outside the reconciler lock. If that read, or the resync snapshot that triggers it, is still pending when DeleteResource reaches forgetGIHistory, the read can return a UUID. RecordObservedGI can then recreate the history file for the deleted resource. The stale record remains for the repair path, which reads the recorded GIs. That breaks the forgetGIHistory contract that a replica created under the same name starts with no record.

Reject GI observations that were taken for an earlier resource instance before they write history.

This is the window the forgetGIHistory comment describes: an observation already queued for the old replica. After DeleteResource the device is down and there is no GI left to read, so the window is one in-flight event. Closing it needs an instance identity across the unlocked read, which is more than this PR should carry. Leaving it as documented.

Andrei Kvapil (@kvaps) Understood. You are keeping the documented in-flight observation window outside this PR’s scope. The race remains an accepted limitation, not a completed fix.

Would you like me to open a follow-up issue for resource-instance validation across the GI read?

Do not re-initialise an external-metadata replica that has no recorded GI after an unclean shutdown.

On an external-metadata volume, the GI history file does not fill. If the Resource status also carries no GI for that volume, repairUncleanMetadata finds an empty known set and returns false, nil. The caller then runs create-md on the volume. That can overwrite the generation identifiers and dirty bitmap of a replica that holds data, possibly the only up-to-date copy.

The PR description says the repair covers external metadata. For a volume without a recorded GI, the external path still re-initialises. This path predates the change, and this change does not extend it.

A correction needs a per-volume GI record for external metadata. The current sources do not provide one. Returning an error for every volume without a record would also block initialisation of new lower disks, such as clones, receives, recycled extents, and volumes added to a live resource. Do not apply that change.

Update repairUncleanMetadata and its caller so an external-metadata volume with
no recorded GI is not passed to create-md when it may contain existing replica
data. Establish a per-volume GI record or another reliable way to distinguish
existing replicas from new lower disks; preserve initialization for new disks,
and do not block every volume without a GI record.

Right, and as you say this predates the change, and refusing every volume without a record would block new lower disks. It needs a per-volume record for external metadata first. Out of scope here.

Andrei Kvapil (@kvaps) Agreed. This is a pre-existing limitation, not a regression introduced by this PR. A follow-up needs a per-volume GI record for external metadata while preserving initialization of new lower disks. No change is needed here for this finding.

Re-seeding can overwrite an established volume when a sibling volume is created.

ensureMetadata runs seedInitialGI whenever firstActivation is true or a volume in the same resource was freshly created. seedInitialGI loops over every volume of the resource, not only the new ones. A volume whose activity log was repaired keeps its metadata, but it can still receive a retained SeedFromGI value. The seed then rewrites its current UUID and peer bitmap slots. The same overwrite applies to other established volumes in the resource.

Excluding repaired volumes alone would not close this path. Seeding also serves adopted metadata under firstActivation, so the rule for existing metadata needs a design decision first.

Review the `ensureMetadata` and `seedInitialGI` flow so retained `SeedFromGI`
data cannot overwrite UUIDs or peer bitmap slots on established volumes,
including repaired volumes and other volumes in the resource. First establish
the intended seeding policy for existing metadata, preserving adopted-metadata
behavior under `firstActivation` where required, then constrain seeding to the
cases that policy permits.

Same, it predates this PR and needs a decision on how seeding treats existing metadata. Out of scope here.

Andrei Kvapil (@kvaps) Understood. The seeding policy for existing metadata needs a separate design decision. I won’t request that change in this PR.

Would you like me to open a follow-up issue for ensureMetadata and seedInitialGI?

A v08 dump counted as naming a current UUID as soon as it had a uuid
block, so one whose first UUID was zero or unreadable still parsed on
the strength of its bitmap and history UUIDs. The block must now lead
with a readable UUID, as v09's current-uuid statement must.

The generation record skipped lines it could not parse and ignored the
scanner's error, so a damaged file could read as no record for a volume
and let the repair re-initialise it. Both are errors now, which every
reader already treats as "do not touch".

Andrei Kvapil (@kvaps) LGTM: a dump whose current UUID can't be read is an error now, on both metadata paths and in both layouts.

I re-read the whole diff against main at cae780f and ran the touched packages merged with main at ffd7b90. Tests and vet are green.

The blocker from my last review is fixed. The current statement counts only when it gives a UUID, and the v08 block has to lead with one. Both of my dumps are subtests on both paths and in the parser test. If I count current-uuid without its UUID, or accept any v08 lead, TestParseMetadataUUIDsRefusesWhatItCannotRead goes red. If I turn the read error after apply-al into hasMD=false, TestEnsureMetadataFailsClosedWhenTheRepairFails goes red.

The earlier non-blocking points hold too. Deleting the keepGIHistoryOf call from applyOne turns TestApplyDropsTheGIRecordOfARemovedVolume red, and skipping a bad record line again turns TestUnreadableGIRecordFailsClosed red. #224 still breaks TestObserverRecordsTheGIOfDataBearingVolumes on main plus both PRs, which you already plan to fix in whichever lands second. #221 still conflicts with this head in seven files.

Non-blocking:

  1. Two doc comments got merged in pkg/satellite/gi_history.go:160. The godoc of errDamagedGIRecord now opens with "readGIHistory reads the file", and readGIHistory has none.
  2. The paragraph in pkg/drbd/dumpmd.go:78 on what the parser refuses breaks mid-sentence ("is not one / this parser can read") and needs a reflow.
  3. A record line is checked for a volume number and a non-empty token, but the token is never checked as hex, so 0 zzz reads as a record. A record made only of such lines matches nothing, so the volume goes through apply-al and then to create-md. It's a much smaller hole than the old skip, but it's still a line this code did not write that is not an error.

The red Integration tests job is TestGroupG/SnapCreateListDelete again, waiting for a Snapshot CRD that this PR doesn't touch. It failed the same way on the fix/luks-inherit-layer-stack branch (run 40550448711) and is green on main at ffd7b90. Every other job is green, E2E lanes included.
